The lantern flickered as it sat upon the wall, giving its rays of light to those within room where Fang sat upon the bed along with Silver tending to his injuries. Silver took a washcloth from the basin next to him, cleaning the blood off Fang's features as he examined his head. "Hmm seems not too bad yet need to treat the cut. Oh will you look at this?"
"Ouch! Take it easy there will ya. What you trying to do stab me?" Exclaimed Fang as he felt something being pulled from above his left ear. Looking at Silver's paw he saw a sliver of pine from the chair with his blood on it. The sliver was thick as his claws, the length only an inch long.
"Oh you big baby did that hurt? I'm sorry." Chuckled Silver as he put the sliver away next to the basin before placing some ointment he received from the healer earlier that day upon his wound. "As thick as that was I'm surprised it didn't go any deeper or make the cut go any wider. You got luck is all I can say, though any closer to your ear there and it would've become a piercing instead." Soon as he finished with Fang's head, he went nodded his head for him to remove his tunic.
Removing his tunic Fang tossed it aside in the basket he made eight years ago as Silver continued on inspecting his injuries. "Apology accepted. Now what's the damage?"
Applying some pressure upon the ribs he watched Fang to see if he winched or snarled to give away any presence of a fracture. Seeing no result he looked over the pelt feeling over the ribs. "Well your lucky those ribs didn't break in the first place the way he swung at you. As for your head it seems fine you just have a huge lump on your precious head of yours along with a major headache I wager."
"But I will be fit for the ceremony tomorrow right?" asked Fang.
Rising from the bed, Silver grab the bloodied sliver and tossed it into the basin before taking it with to the window dumping its contents outside. "You'll be fine just make sure you don't hurt yourself in the ordeal or walk into any more trouble."
Fang laughed. "What you afraid I'm going to get worse than this?"
Silver looked at the night sky, staring at the moon only another night away from its full cycle as he replied. "It's no laughing matter Fang. Some wolves make it through the ordeal, others who went in to partake of the trial never came out alive. Some were ripped into shreds when we open the door as they lay upon the stone floor cold as the winter's touch upon these lands."
"I understand your concern father, yet I must partake otherwise I won't be worthy to be considered as a man."
Smiling as he turned about from the window Silver looked at his adoptive son. "You've prove that already on every occasion since I raised you. You are a man, not by your appearance but within you as well. There should be no other reason to doubt that, and taking this trail..."
Fang rose from his bed as he approached Silver. "I'm doing this myself. I wish to see something within that church that will give me the answers I seek."
Silver looked over at Fang. The pup he found washed up on the banks of a river ten years ago during the war stood before him fully grown at last. His heart swelled with pride but at the same time with sorrow for he knew shortly Fang would leave to follow his dreams of becoming a warrior for the king himself as his own son did before him. "I understand, yet I don't want to lose another son despite how many great deeds he has accomplished before one best him with the arts of a blade. I know you're going to leave Slyvangard after the ordeal."
Hearing the silent sob within his father's voice, Fang knew it was time to break it to him of his heart's desire. "I wish to go join the valor warriors. Not only will I learn the arts of war or skills with the blade but I'll be on adventures as I explore more of our world. And then as time comes perhaps find my equal to have the honor of bearing my children in our name as was this town is dedicated to your deceased son in that war he fought to protect you and everyone else here in Slyvangard."
"You honor my name as such, but it will mean nothing if I lose another son. What if you find your parents still live? Will you disgrace them of accepting my name if you learn the truth down at that church Fang? Forgive my anger but I refuse to lose another son, even if I adopted you. I'm a father Fang, understand my reasoning behind all of this."
Placing his paws upon Silver shoulders, Fang continued on as he tried to lower his father's anger from the breaking point. "I can never replace your first and only son you lost ten years ago. That was never my goal. He and I may share the same resemblance yet our pelts are of difference. We share the same goal, why do you wish to deny this from me aside of the fear of losing me? If my parents still live, then great joy will be upon the both of us but that will not sever the bond you created between the two of us since you raised me. I call you father for that reason alone for you raised me since the day you found me. And I won't disgrace their name by taking on yours, I see it only fit since you raised me as I am today and I wish to repay the favor of accepting your name as I pass the trials."
"Fang..." Silver started but was cut off as Fang continued on.
"I understand your reasoning, behind all of this. You lost your son in that war, twenty leagues from where we are in the Forest of Guard. I know now that you found me on the same day you found out he and his troops were under attack. You went to aid him, despite the fate might have befall upon you. Yet you came across me and made a decision. Do not blame yourself any longer of the loss of your first son. As you told me, his squadron was surrounded on all sides leaving them cut off from any escape. Just take in consideration he died to save this village, and the father that resided within. He and his men may have been outnumbered yet they won the battle at the cost of their lives. Do you wish to continue living of regret knowing the facts laid before you? You were proud of him living, why not now?"
Silver sighed as he pushed Fang away from him before going back to the window. Closing his eyes as the tears came forth, he saw the image of his first son within his memories. A proud canine that loved his father, and those he wished to protect. The spitting image of Fang, only his pelt was jet black and golden flecked eyes just like his mothers. A wife that just abandoned their family. Unknown reasons and no goodbyes. A family that was torn apart despite Silver holding it together for the years before him for his son. "Proud of him? Sure I was proud of him. Who wouldn't be in the first place when your only begotten son earned the rank of a General, served for the King of Translavkania, and many other great deeds that he done? Never the less to lose another, even if not in my blood but one willing to accept my name is the same as losing another son. I don't want to lose you, as I lost my son ten years ago." Silver finished as fresh tears started trickling down his face once more as he slammed his right paw against the window sill.
Brushing the tears aside and taking a deep breath Silver turned facing Fang as he continued. "Besides you should listen to your heart for it lets you know the truth as well it's your own council. And I won't stop you from going seeing how it's what you wanted after all them stories I told you of my son as you were growing up."
The two stood before another as silenced followed. Finally making a decision Fang came forward taking a spot near the window, left of Silver's position as he addressed his father. "Why not come with me then? I understand the fact of leaving you would dam your life. I knew of this when I made the decision to leave Slyvangard after the ordeal which is why I ask you to come with me. I don't believe I can fathom my father being left behind to be in shambles as if he's lost another son twice in a row even one is breathing before him."
Shaking at the remark Silver tried controlling his temper. "You always blunt you know that? And who will look over the saloon while were gone?"
Leaning against the wall Fang give it some thought before replying. "I have two choices for you, Star or Hawk."
"Hawk as in the stable wolf? You got to be kidding me." Exclaimed Silver.
"And why not? May I be brave enough to ask?" Asked Fang.
"Well she's ancient for one, and..."
Fang cut him off with a wave of his right paw. "You know as good as I do that she's fit for the job than Star. Besides it was she who taught me how to break up those fights in the saloon remember? Not to mention she was your bouncer before I volunteered myself for that position."
Silver sighed. "Aye I remember all right."
"So do we agree that Hawk will be in charge of our saloon and that you'll come with me on my journey to become a valor warrior?" Fang said as he held out his right paw in midair for the bargain to be sealed.
Grasping Fangs' paw over his own Silver agreed to the terms. Glad of himself that Silver will be coming along on his journey and sharing the adventures together Fang smiled as he went back over to his bed leaving Silver at the window alone.
"What you smiling for?" questioned Silver.
"Oh that we'll be going on a journey together after I pass the Chamber of Trials of course." Chuckled Fang as he laid upon his bed before closing his eyelids as Silver came over next to him.
Walking over to his son's bed he pointed his right index claw at Fang making his point clear unto him. "You better Fang, or I swear that when my time has come I'll hunt your soul to the ends of the Translavkania. I've lost one son, and with your reasoning I accept the decision I made and will do my best as a parent not to regret of the choice I made. I may have lost one, but fate was kind enough to bestow another upon me. I don't want to lose another am I clear?"
Opening his right eye he noticed how serious his father was, even by the index claw sticking out at him in midair before his nostrils. "I'll make it ok. Besides I'm sure it will be a challenge that I'll never forget."
"Oh I'm sure you won't Fang. Just make sure you come out of there alive ok?"
Fang saw the worried mixed with concerned face of his father. Rising upon his flanks he open his arms in a gesture towards Silver. "You going to leave me here without a goodnight hug pa?"
Walking over Silver faced his beloved son. "You using the excuse of 'It comfort's me' again? I thought you stopped this by now, yet here you are at the age of eighteen and you want a goodnights hug eh?"
Tilting his cranium at the remark Fang told the truth as he smiled. "I stopped using that excuse at the age of ten father. I continue this behavior for the fact I love you as a father and to show that is by giving you a hug in return for all you have done for me."
Chuckling at the remark Silver embraced his son. "Smart ass, will you ever learn? No don't answer that I already know the answer. Raising you has been my pleasure son." Releasing the embrace he watched Fang lay back down upon his bed as he walked over to the door about to leave, yet he paused before he turned around bidding Fang goodnight before he departed. 'I know you will for your determined to make it. The question is though, will the Chamber of Trials let you live is what concerns me.' "Night Fang."
"Night Father." Fang yawned as he watched his father close the door behind him. Stretching for the last time Fang laid in his bed as he pulled the covers over himself, and dreamed the greatest dreams he could hope for of being a valor warrior. Not knowing that Vangru and his forces was only three days away from the village of Slyvangard along with the tenth regiment that received an urgent message from the King of Translavkania to search him out.
