At long last, after a month apart, Adam reunites with Lowell back at the Maverick Hotel. How will they celebrate? AKA: There is more than chaos and the smell of distant explosions in the air.
NOTE: To avoid shitposting and political ranting in the comments, let's all just agree that you're reading this because a) you're looking for some entertainment b) you want to read a dystopian furry story or c) the most likely of reasons, you want to read something that'll make you feel romantic and/or horny. Otherwise, enjoy yourself.
We fled down the garage like literal criminals. Floor by floor. Heartbeat between heartbeats, tensing as Val swerved the minivan down to the second floor.
As planned, the vixen paused the vehicle for a short moment (whiplash hurt, but fuck it!), giving me and Blu enough time to place our dark hoodies over our heads. My feline ears poked at the fabric for a microsecond before they finally plopped through the two holes in the top, while Blu's ears had a little trouble at first. However, we had little to worry about, placing our facemasks on and gripping our backpacks before sprinting out the sliding doors.
"Good luck, Val!" Blu's deep voice sounded muffled through the mask that covered his muzzle, but we heard plainly. "C'mon, Adam! C'mon!"
As the Doberman pulled me to the central stairwell, Val's reply only came from the sound of screeching tires and the faint sound of distant police sirens. It all echoed down the concrete staircase that circled for another floor, all of it now empty of other furs. Good.
"Vox, this is Blu! Objective complete, I repeat, we completed our objective!"
"Excellent work, Blu!" came the swift fox's crackling voice, sounding equally as frantic. "Airport is bein' evacuated. You and Adam better be gettin' to your next objective. Good luck, boys!"
"Yessir!" we barked in unison. Seconds later and Blu used his brute strength to smash the flip phone against the cinderblock wall, hastily tossing the broken device into a nearby storm drain once we exited into the streets.
The few civilian furs outside this evening fled away from the explosions, while some tried capturing the event on their smart phones, thankfully ignoring us as we snaked from the parking garage down the boulevard. It didn't take a genius to realize what would likely happen to the photos once they were uploaded online, but whatever.
I half-expected an intense escape laced in desperate adrenaline, all amidst a hail of gunfire. Luckily for me and Blu, the 'mass vandalism' occurring on Moses International's runways--our thermite explosions' bright orange glowed like small stars, reflecting from the glass windows of surrounding buildings down onto the sidewalks and cars, their passengers flabbergasted at what was happening--distracted almost all nearby authorities for the time being.
As planned, Val in the minivan would rendezvous alongside Vox and the others to pull police, government agents and potential Archangels in the area on a wild goose chase. And, from the distant gunshots and blaring police sirens a block away, the wild goose chase had already begun.
" --coded curfew is in effect!" screeched the emergency speakers from powerlines and a couple of nearby streetlights. My ringing ears folded inward at their high volume. " All civilian personnel are to return to their homes immediately. Repeat: a red-coded curfew is now in effect. All civilian person--"
I tried offering the Peoria cell a prayer to God, to give them safe passage back home and live another day. However, there came little time to even speak His name. Between raw epinephrine and his fast pace, Blu and I jogged down the sidewalk and under a dirty highway. Honking and gasps echoed from above, nearly drowning out my thoughts. Even with the city in chaos over the explosions, it didn't mean we wouldn't be found quickly. For all we knew, a plainclothes Archangel was likely tailing us, waiting for the perfect time to strike during all of the chaos. Or, perhaps to follow us to more of our kind.
Speaking of our kind though...
The downtown buildings and semi-industrial wasteland slowly transitioned into inner city neighborhoods, empty of civilians as the state-controlled speakers continued bellowing out orders. Blu's jogs became even more frantic then, as did mine despite my wobbling, numbing legs. I willed myself to ignore the pain. To ignore the long-term effects of my past muscle atrophy. To keep moving. One foot after the other.
The thermite explosion had long since died out, but not the fear and the consequences.
We arrived on the sidewalk to an intersection lined up in a traffic jam. A couple of uniformed officers, guarded by a wolfish Covenant Guardsman armed with a shotgun, guided the lineup of vehicles around the wreckage of two cars that apparently collided earlier. Both automobiles were completely totaled into twisted metallic sculptures. At first, as Blu pulled me along the incoming crosswalk, all I could focus on were two furs--a middle-aged Great Dane and a bandaged ocelot, being tended to by ambulance first responders.
I couldn't help but blanch at the sight. Did we...cause this?
My eyes traveled from the crash site to the opposite corner of the street. Behind a gathered crowd of several furs, I could spot two familiar individuals watching the unfolded scene; a light-furred fennec in casual clothes, and a grey-furred timber wolf in his signature black hoodie jacket, staring directly at me.
His smile was practically infectious, once we locked eyes on each other.
"Blu," I stopped in my tracks, silently nudging the taller canine's shoulder. "Across the street. It's Lowell. And Hector."
"Is he the wolf?" he asked, to which I nodded fervently. The Doberman remained calm and quietly muttered down to me, "Good. They see us too. Let's follow. Remember, look like you're also trying to get back home for the curfew."
My tail flicked against the sidewalk, trying to calm down. "Got it."
As nonchalantly as we could, Blu and I hurried along the sidewalk while making little to no eye contact with either Hector or Lowell, who wisely did the same. Luckily for us, it seemed the officers and armed guard were primarily more focused on responding to the crash and telling civilians to go home, per curfew orders. No Archangels were in sight so far.
Across the jammed road, packed with cars still waiting for guidance at the intersection, I saw Lowell motion his head towards a nearby alleyway. It stopped just before an empty parking lot for a small general store (now closed early). Without a beat, the timber wolf and his fennec comrade immediately slipped inside the dark crevice. Blu and I quickly followed suit while making sure not to draw attention to ourselves.
Especially to the cars filled with impatient, confused and cautious drivers and passengers. If any of the furs inside noticed us, they didn't seem to care, mostly keeping an eye on the vehicle ahead of theirs as we crept across the road into the alley.
We were just civilians like them trying to get back home.
It was musty, smelled of abandoned cigarette butts and I could barely see, yet Blu's reassuring paw held mine as he led me forward. My foot nearly tripped on a half-crushed beer can that skidded across the rough asphalt.
"Please keep quiet," Blu mumbled in the darkness.
"Sorry," I answered in an inaudible hush. The only source of light came from the flickering bulb of a tall streetlight behind us. Yet, despite Blu's insistence, I could not resist quietly calling out, "L-Lowell?"
Blu mumbled something inaudible under his breath, then whispered into the darkness a phrase, "The government of the people, by the people, for the people...?"
Honk! Honk!
I jumped half a foot in the air, but Blu held my paw firmly.
"...it shall not perish from the earth," replied that smooth, coy voice I remembered. "Shhh."
A warm paw grabbed mine and presumably onto Blu's. Silently as we allowed ourselves, they led us left towards a section of the wall. I heard feet scuffling against the asphalt, then some kind of latch unlock before I was suddenly pulled into a cramped hole. It smelled moldy and nearly made me gag, but I dared not to speak out and signal to potential enemies of our presence.
The paw brought mine to grasp a railing, which I then realized was the top of a cold metal ladder. Without much thought, I climbed down until my sneakers touched solid, uneven terrain on the floor. We had to be in some sort of underground tunnel. Unfortunately for me, my feline eyes could do little but blink in the complete darkness.
I almost let go of the ladder when my fingers suddenly brushed against the bottom of someone's firm jeans as they descended behind me.
"Sorry!" I yanked it away, then grunted softly as my back impacted against a jagged wall. "Sh-Shit, that sm--"
Two strong paws swiftly pulled me forward, wrapping around me and crushing me.
"Adam, you fucking dumbass..." the wolf snarled, his hot breath tickled my left ear as he pulled me close to his chest. "Thought you were dead when I lost you! Thank fucking Hell that these commie idiots pulled you outta there before the REAL Archangels shot you or snagged you! Seriously, do you have any idea what I was going through until I found out you were rescued by those Peoria commies??"
I couldn't help but deadpan, even if Lowell could see my expression in the dark. However, that didn't prevent me from returning the hug in near-equal strength, curling my tail against his leg as mine fidgeted at feeling his curl around it like a comforting python.
"Missed you too, Lowell..." I murmured into his shoulder, sincerely pouring all of my relief into his hug. "I really missed you."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," Hector hissed behind us once he descended down the ladder. "Low, you and your boyfriend need to keep it down. We're not outta the woods yet, as you put it earlier..."
"Missed you too, Hector," I waved half-mockingly, and half-earnestly. "How's life been for you?"
"Alright, but like I said, keep your voices down," the Mexican American fennec huffed, even after Lowell and I let go of each other. "Lowell, celebrate this little reunion later."
"Fuck you too, Hector," my wolf chuckled, then pulled a paw from my elbow. "Can you see this?"
Hector growled slightly. "I can, because my eyes are like yours, tu idiota..."
The wolf's smugness did not even waver, "I know you can see, but..." he pulled his other paw away from me and turned around. "Can you also see this?"
"Ugh, eres tremendamente maricon..."
Wait, did he really just refer to me as Lowell's 'boyfriend'? I blushed at the memory of Lowell's reassuring lips, praying to God that neither of the bickering canines noticed my bashful attempts at appearing smaller.
"Um, hello?" Blu's voice emerged from the bottom of the ladder as he joined us in the narrow tunnel. "Listen, as happy as I am to meet the Chicago cell face-to-face, I have to agree with the fennec here. Hector, right?"
"Hector Fernandez-Garcia, and you're Bluford Bowden, correct?"
"Yep," Blu replied in the same low tone, "but you can call me 'Blu' for short."
"Fine then." The subdued noise of shuffling nearby indicated that Hector walked further down the uneven, crooked tunnel ahead of us, "Let's get going before Johanna worries if the maldito Devoto got us. She's been looking forward to having you back, Grimwald."
"Good idea, but first...there's something I need to get offa my chest first. Peorian commie?"
"Hmm? What did you ju--"
A loud groan and intense grunt came from both Lowell and whom I presumed to be Blu.
"Idiota! What did you do?"
"What the fuck was that for?"
"Can someone tell me what happened?" I spoke up in the darkness, alarmed that Lowell went a little too far. "Tell me you didn't, Low..."
"I just gave him some payback for what he did to you, sweetheart," he chuckled darkly, then stepped forward to the faded outline of Blu standing back up. "No hard feelings?"
A gunshot above us startled us into silence. It died just as it started echoing through the layers of concrete, cobblestone and pipes dividing us from the surface.
"None," Blu said in an even tone, one I recognized from inside my 'Archangel cell' and he pretended to be the enemy, "Let's go."
I exhaled in relief as Lowell squeezed onto my left paw, then silently followed behind him and Blu as Hector led us down the path.
With a low voice and hint of a wolfish whisper, Lowell explained to me how, several years prior to the Canadian Occupation, the Defiant dug out tunnels that sometimes stretched by six miles. They'd use this to smuggle things in and out of the Maverick when they couldn't simply be carried through the lobby (or in a suitcase). Most even connected them with some of the storm drains throughout Chicago, the underworld maze did not directly connect to just the Maverick Hotel's back kitchen. It connected to surrounding venues such as two other nearby hotels, one motel, a restaurant's basement, a storm drain outside an abandoned aquatic center and even two spots in Schiller Park.
In order to lessen the risks of discovery, the Defiant did not use any flashlights or equipment as evidence of their being there. At least one fur with superior night vision would navigate the tunnels while going inside and outside the tunnels.
"We couldn't use this last time we left the hotel because Johanna insists this only be used for emergencies, like getting contraband inside or fleeing a raid or...getting a comrade back home safely," Lowell answered one of my questions, the hint of a grin piercing the darkness as my eyes adjusted slightly to the pitch blackness. "Speaking of which, I need you to look out for Abigail."
My right ear cocked up at his warning, "Huh? Why's that?"
***
I learned exactly why when the first thing Abigail did after hugging me, was promptly smacking the back of my forehead once the three of us (minus Hector, who had already left to visit Johanna's room to debrief her on the mission's success) settled inside of the elderly rabbit's hotel room, serving as her de facto office.
"Sometimes, I wonder how we even have fighters to begin with!" she smothered us with questions, "Are you lot suicidal? Do you like to put yourselves in danger? I let you boys out of my sight for a week and not only were you missing Adam, but you found yourself halfway across the state."
"I'm sorry, ma'am," my head bowed in slight shame. In the month I'd been away from the Maverick, I hadn't even taken in account what the others were feeling. "I'm alive though, right?"
"That you are, Adam," she huffed while checking up on the bruise on my forehead, which I'd earned after ignoring Hector's warning to duck while in the tunnel. "Thank the Lord you were found. Poor Lowell dear was practically bawling when he arrived back here--"
"I was not!"
"Oh, you so were, deary..." she chuckled once she finished applying some balm to the bruise, then focused her attention to Blu sitting in the next empty chair. "Now, would you like me to call you by your full name, or do you prefer a nickname?"
The imposing Doberman returned her pleasant smile. "My friends call me 'Blu', ma'am."
"Oh please, you can call me Abigail. Everyone does," she hummed after clapping her paws together. "Now, while we're waiting for word back from Hector, why don't I get you all some water? You must be parched."
As she scurried off to her bathroom, presumably to get some plastic cups, the three of us began to relax and converse a bit. Lowell eagerly started to rile up towards a certain Doberman.
"I'd heard of you, ya know. You did a real number with the Houston cell a couple summers ago..." the wolf commented nonchalantly. "Great stuff."
"Thanks," Blu nodded. "I'd heard of your work too. Did you really escape an entire squad of Archangels in Detroit? One of my friends back in Peoria heard about it in the grapevine."
"Well..." Lowell scratched the back of his head, looking slightly embarrassed, "technically it was one Archangel leading half a squad of police officers. I'd set off a bomb on the Detroit Wall when they'd found me fleeing the scene. Luckily, I lost 'em in a church."
An awkward silence hung over all of us.
"What kind of a name is 'Bluford' anyway?" Lowell pressed, ears flicking up and down.
Blu mirrored it the same way, "Granddad's. What kind of a name is 'Lowell'?"
The wolf shook his muzzle, laughing, "Hehe, touché..."
Without a beat, they firmly shook paws. Like, Lowell hadn't even sucker-punched Blu in the gut an hour earlier.
"Thanks for getting him back," Lowell said, motioning to me without looking away from the slightly taller canine. "Though I'm not sorry for hitting you."
"Lowell," Abigail's annoyed voice seethed from across the room. "What have I told you about fighting?"
"I'm fine, trust me...It was nothing." Blu exhaled in slight impressment towards the wolf, "Nice punch there, but I personally would've gone for below the belt first."
Lowell smirked in confidence, "That can be arranged."
Before the Doberman had the chance to retort that remark, the door to the hotel room unlocked itself and Hector peeked through the doorway.
"Johanna, Blu wants to talk to you. Grimwald and Lowell?" the fennec acknowledged us, "She wants you both to go straight to bed. Says, and I quote, 'You earned yourselves a good night's rest. God knows President Nessen won't. You are to report to me at 8:00 tomorrow sharp'. She also said your stuff's been moved to Low's room, Grimwald. Hope that's okay."
"Fine by me," I couldn't help but trade smiles with Lowell.
The Maverick Hotel's Tuscan-colored hallways were more welcoming to me than I expected them to be. Long corridors upon long corridors of locked doors leading into rooms either unoccupied or waiting to be. None of it felt intimidating anymore. Not even the elevator seemed claustrophobic like the tunnels below us, but instead hospitable. Like a hug from a long-lost friend, cheering for your return.
As the elevator closed, my ears perked up at the wolf's short chuckle.
"Was punching him necessary, Low?" I asked.
"No, not really..." he admitted without so much as losing a centimeter of that grin of his, "but it made me feel better, that's for sure."
My tail curled as the elevator let us off to his floor, and we began making it to his dwelling, "I already forgave him, you know."
"He kinda deserved it."
"I forgave him."
"Your point being? He fucking put you through mental hell, for Christ's sake..."
"Actually, I'm thankful for him interrogating me," I playfully shrugged, to which the wolf stared at me like I'd grown an extra pair of ears. I reduced my voice slightly once it reoccurred to me we were passing occupied rooms. "It made me remember who I'm fighting for. And why I'm fighting in the first place, for what they did to me back in Cicero...and, well...because you--"
We shut our muzzles when one of the doors a few rooms ahead of us slammed open. A lumbering bull stuffed in a business suit hauled his suitcase with one pair of white-knuckled fingers while gripping his cellphone to his ear. Snarling exasperation sculpted his snout into a snarl directed at whoever was on the other end of his call. He didn't even acknowledge us while barging to the elevator.
"No! No! I can't afford another night! I need the next flight back to New York before my accounts run dry! Please, get me your manager! Ask him when the next flight from Midway to Reagan is! Okay, I can wait..."
Lowell fidgeted with the room key until we rushed into his room, locking the door behind me as I finished my sentence from earlier, "Because you saved me."
The wolf and I locked eyes with one another, another smile etching itself onto our muzzles before they suddenly connected. Unlike before, he didn't surprise me with a simple peck on the lips or a deepening one like he had when he left to escort the Langes ("They're currently asleep for the night, but were told about your return, Grimwald.") from their house. Instead, Lowell held me against the door and licked his snarling, lustful tongue along my lower and upper lips, asking for permission to enter.
Gladly, I allowed him, and surrendered to his tastes. A hint of whiskey, a dash of pine and a long afternoon of musky sweat. His musk...his savoring lips and teeth and tongue...it overwhelmed my senses.
When we parted slowly, hit hot breathed tickled my cheeks, and I found myself hanging up against the door with my feet hovering several inches from the carpet.
"Eep!" I jumped back down, entire face growing hotter as I looked back up to Lowell, who smugly looked down at me without a single hint of regret. Neither did I, but I did maintain some of my normal bashfulness, which thankfully didn't last for too long. "Hehe...G-Good...Good kisser..."
That cocky grin of his literally curved across his entire muzzle, revealing the canine's fangs in the dimness of the room. "You ain't seen me at my best yet, Adam."
What in the name of whatever version of God I still believed in was I doing? Where did this bravery suddenly come from? Why wasn't I quivering in timid horniness as Lowell pecked my lips again and held my paw while leading me to the back bedroom?
"I'm gonna take a shower now, but if ya want," he huskily murmured to me, the wolf beginning to unbuckle his belt, "you can join me. Save water and all. And by the way, your boner looks good in those jeans, hehe."
My eyes widened and I glanced down to see that, indeed, I sported an erection that pressed painfully into the denim. "I...I..."
"C'mon now...where's the boldness, Adam?" Lowell confidently stepped out of his fallen jeans and kicked them away, leaning closer to my stiff (in more ways than one) body. He whispered, "Last month, I remember you doing down on my dick, in the dark, in a garage, on a property we weren't supposed to be on, committing an act we weren't supposed to be committing...Where's the bold kitty from before, eh?"
Gulping at how lost I could get in those auburn eyes of his, my fingers blindly reach down to pull down my own jeans, refusing to look away from Lowell's trailing gaze. When his eyes did fall on my tented boxers, transfixed temporarily, I impulsively pulled the wolf into a surprise kiss. In spite of my smaller stature and lack of muscles compared to him, I somehow managed to push us into the bathroom, closing the door behind me as we eagerly stripped.
Feeling and tasting Lowell's erection nearly paled to seeing it in all of its glory. Thick and uncut, a grey bush surrounding the base of the slightly curved shaft and leaking. His healed scars under the tuff of grey and white fur all over his muscular body did not detract from how handsome he was.
After a few minutes of trading peeks and staring, I finished undressing down to nothing. Granted, he had definitely seen myself unclothed--back in the days when I could barely even walk without his help--yet I somehow still felt...vulnerable around him. It made me feel nervous, but somehow still thrilling, especially when it showed between my legs.
The Maverick Hotel & Bar's suites each had a bathroom consisting of a decent toilet, wallpaper matching its color scheme, a mirror, a large sink with scented hand sanitizer and a sizable shower capable of holding more than one fur. The flooring inside was tiled, had more than one shower nozzle and came complimentary with anti-musk shampoo. For Lowell's room, complimentary of the hotel staff who provided it for free, my nose detected a hint of fruit.
Oh God, how I've missed running water, I mentally orgasmed at the rush of warm rainwater flowing along my arms, down my torso and along my legs. Then, a pair of strong arms wrapped around me from behind, Eep!
After stepping inside the shower stall to join me, Lowell's erection pressed against my ass, much to his vocal amusement. "Don't worry," his drenched tail flicked droplets of water at my toes, "Just someone you're already familiar with, oh and me, hehe..."
His hardened cock pulsed against my backside.
However, instead of letting this wolf have control over me, I turned my head to raspberry Lowell, "Very funny, but--ahhhh! Ooooh..."
Underneath the flow of descending water, I felt the wolf's talented paws, one of which held a bar of soap, begin to lather my chest up and down in the confined space. What made me moan though was when the soap teased one of my pert nipples, which sent shivers up my wet tail.
"Shhh, shhh, shhhh, shhhhhhh...we don't wanna be too loud, Adam," he chuckled deeply, his teeth teasing the back of my neck as he leaned against me. "Mmm, I can see that month away paid off...ya got some muscles now..."
I purred in approval at his wandering fingers, soapy and slick as they traced along the definitions. On my arms, my minimal bicep, through the fur on my shivering stomach and even along my thighs, mere inches from my throbbing manhood.
"Now I don't have to worry about breaking ya like a twig, if we get to that part in the future." When Lowell started to laugh under the showerhead, I pulled the nozzle down and sprayed the cocky wolf's snout. Soon, we were giggling like naughty schoolboys once I placed the nozzle back in its place.
We tried doing everything with what little time we did. Aside from the basics of soaping and washing our fur (and greatly helping each other clean those hard-to-reach places WHILE enjoying the other's vying touches), Lowell and I did not do much. We did trade lustful kisses under the torrential downpour of the shower nozzle and probed along the area underneath our tails, which then culminated in a magical moment of us facing each other, hotly making out and jacking off together.
His fingers pumped my erection like he'd done this before. I didn't question it for now, instead mimicking how the wolf patiently/erratically stroked our cocks together with a small layer of soap, teasing the pink heads with his pinkie and thumbs until we neared climax.
We stifled our loud moans with another kiss, but I doubted any of Lowell's neighbors could hear us over the shower's sprays, or through the insolation. Better to be as careful as ever though.
"Mmmm...that was..." I panted, feeling the effects of the past month drench us further, "...amazing...Amazing..."
"Heh," Lowell panted too, brushing my lips with his tongue, "You betcha..."
Still, it felt freeing. It felt freeing to marvel at Lowell through the steam after we cleaned up a second time. It felt freeing to dry each other while trading knowing grins with each other in the bathroom, then in the bedroom. It felt freeing to crawl into bed together and cuddle against Lowell's body as we lay under the sheets, tired after a long month apart and a long night spent causing what we hoped to be a massive wakeup call for our enemies.
To an extent, as I lay pressed against the semi-dry timber wolf under a layer of velvet blankets, my paw resting on his rising and falling stomach, foreheads resting against each other as we both drifted off to a relaxing sleep...I forget we still lived in the Devout States of America.
