Beware your balcony

Story by Roy Starr on SoFurry

Roy sighed, his blue scales glittering in the sun as he soared over the town, sharp eyes scanning the sidewalks below. He hoped to find at least one person not paying attention, but the sidewalks had turned deserted as soon as he took to the skies.

"I suppose too many people saw me carry off that duo. I knew I should've just stayed on their roof." He muttered, banking softly to the left to fly over a residential area, the wind carrying his words away from even his own ears. He glided over the houses for a few minutes, enjoying the easy flight even as he watched potential meals scurry back inside.

"I'll need to find new hunting grounds if this keeps up." Roy sighs disappointedly, starting to angle his flight towards home, before pausing his turn. An apartment building with a... blue roof? A grin appeared on his face as a plan came together. His bright scales might finally be good for some camouflage he mused, as he soared downward.

"He's going to snag you if you go outside!" Rosa heard Valerie call from the kitchen. The mouse ignored her, and stepped out onto her balcony. Taking a deep breath of the morning air, she looked up at the clear sky. A dragon snatching people away. What a ridiculous rumor mill! She turned around to face Valerie, leaning on the railing casually as the much smaller mouse watched nervously from outside.

"You see? Nothing going on out here!" She said, gesturing widely with her hands. "Certainly no sky predators. We've been safe out here before, and I'm still safe now."

Valerie slowly stepped forward. "I suppose so. I'd just rather not take the risk you know? You only get one mistake."

Rosa laughed at her caution. "There are so few predators in this part of town, you have to make up ones that come from the sky! Come on now, you know that's ridiculous."

She barely had time to scream as wet darkness enveloped her from above.

Valerie screamed as a blur of blue and yellow darted down from the roof, slid over her head and shoulders, and dragged her back up, her legs kicking wildly as they vanished. Tripping over backwards in shock, all she could do was watch the now empty balcony in horror, and listen to the occasional wet sounding slurp come from outside. There was a final -glrch-, and then the only noise was the whistle of the wind.

Valerie realized that the final sound had been a swallow, but was too late in getting back to her feet. She watched in terror as a dragon swung off the roof, landing on her balcony with a thud she felt through the floor. Frozen, she watched in disbelief as his towering form crouched to fit through the balcony door, his shirtless gut showing the faint outline of a fighting Rosa.

"You know, for what it's worth, you were right." His voice rumbled as he reached toward her. She turned to scramble away, but lost her footing on the slick tile, falling on her face with a thud. A pressure on her ankle, and she was being lifted, just enough distance from the ceiling for him to bring her to be face to face with him. She kicked her other leg out, her heart sinking as she realized she was maybe half his size.

As he inspected her, she realized she should scream, maybe someone was in the hallway! As she took a deep breath, his other hand clasped her around the muzzle, holding her jaws shut with ease. Valerie's eyes widened, and she tried to beat against his hand with hers.

"Enough of that." The dragon spoke, his voice so close it overwhelmed her senses, freezing her in terror. "Now, let's have a little challenge." He licked his lips looking her up and down. "It's been awhile since I've had two at once. If both of you can fight hard enough, you may just convince me to cough you up!" Valerie's eyes flicked to the lump in his stomach, and how the bulge that was Rosa had already slowed it's fight.

"Go ahead and let your friend know that when you get down, will you?" Valerie's eyes shot back up, only to see a cavernous, red maw. The hand holding her muzzle released, but she had no time to plead or scream, because her head was engulfed an instant later. With one powerful swallow, her shoulders slipped into his mouth, and she sobbed as her downward descent began.

Roy gulped her hips, leaving only her legs and tail left uneaten. He wondered if the second mouse was too afraid to fight, she seemed much more docile than the first. Didn't matter now, as with another gulp, her small legs slid inside his maw as well. All that was left was to slurp her tail, and with one more loud swallow, his bulged throat could relax as his meal slid down, adding a noticeable paunch to his stomach now.

He yawned, stretching slightly, before he headed back to the balcony to make the journey home, disappointed that his occupants were just as relaxed as he was. But as he crossed onto the balcony, his gut came to life, the twin shapes of the mice giving it their all. He stopped, the commotion working something up his throat, letting out a loud belch that echoed off the opposing complex. Licking the last of their flavor off his lips, he jumped off the balcony with a grin, powerful wings carrying him into the sky.

He had been lying about coughing them up, of course. Even if the duo part had been true, they were small enough it would have taken four or five of them to come close to upsetting him. As he rose into the clouds, his gut continued to writhe, as it would for the next few hours.

They didn't stand a chance.
