Travis was surprised how much had changed between him and Serenity after their night of passion. Shi had grown so much closer to him in the days following, much more than he had thought possible. Shi had released the chains that had weighed him down. Now, he was able to be in a relationship with limited problems. Of course, there was the occasional insecurity that popped up. Travis was lucky enough to keep those hidden for the most part. Shi knew that he was hiding a lot more but didn't push him on the issue. Shi knew that their relationship would have to be taken slowly. He was very fragile in the mental department. Shi would have to work around that if shi wants to progress.
One good thing that occurred was that their work ethic increased significantly. They did not let their status as mates overtake their professionalism and sense of duty. Travis found that reassuring knowing that Serenity could treat him like a regular worker while simultaneously being his lover. It was a little strange since he was very adamant about not dating co-workers. He had read and seen too many instances where workplace romance ended up creating a toxic work environment. Serenity had made great efforts to not let that happen. To Travis, this was a testament to how special Chakats were.
As the week progressed, Travis learned more and more about the SI systems on Orion. They had been conducting functional checks of their entire system with great effect. They had already determined that they would be ready for a telemetry check next week once they were done with the telemetry characterization. Serenity had requisitioned one of the telemetry rooms to support that checkout. They were roughly on schedule, but Travis was always cautious about voicing those kinds of words aloud. He was very superstitious of Murphy coming to ruin their plans. He'd like to avoid that as best as he could, thank you very much.
It wasn't always work-focused between him and Serenity. They always had lunch together. During that time, they would talk and deepen their relationship as best they could. They also went out to do other fun date activities, like movies and exploring the local shopping areas. He even got to spend some time with the others of the family on Secondday. That was a particularly interesting experience for him. Serenity had asked if he wanted to hang out with hir before shi had to pick up hir sister from practice. He had agreed to join hir, which led them to a Junior League Chakker field. He didn't know what to expect from this trip but considered it an adventure for himself.
When they approached the stands with the other parents and siblings, they got a glimpse of a scrimmage match in progress. That was the first time he had seen it played. Travis noticed that the game was intense even as a simple game for practice. He attributed that to his competitive nature. Practice ended after the coach called the game over. The teams went to take quick showers before leaving for the day. When Diamond came out with hir gear in hir bag, shi quickly spotted hir sister and new Companion. Shi bounded over and gave each a hug. Getting a giant hug from the athletic teen was not on the list of things Travis was expecting on this trip. He took it in stride and returned the embrace with equal measure. Besides, he was hir brother-in-law, so to speak. Hugs were a must for the family.

Serenity usually got Diamond a treat after practice since this was their sisterly bonding time. When he learned that, he tried to make a quick escape not to interfere. Out of the two, Diamond was the more adamant that he stayed with them. Shi wanted to spend time with hir new family member. That touched his heart in ways he would treasure for the rest of his life. He ended up talking to both about what Diamond was hoping for out of life, and hir vision of the future. The teen was super adamant about trying to become a professional Chakker player. Recruiters for the Stellar League were making the rounds, and shi was hoping that by the time shi turned eighteen, shi would be picked up by one of the big teams.
Travis then mentioned to them that he had never seen a Chakker match in person. He'd only seen highlight reels or recordings. That brought a horrified gasp from Diamond. Shi considered that a travesty that he had never seen a game of the great sport of Chakker live. That got them about making a family outing to watch the next local game. Diamond recalled that in two weeks, the Amistad Aphodites were playing the New Auckland Witches for a shot at the Stellar Cup. That would be their best chance, but they would have to hurry to purchase tickets. Serenity said that they would mention it when they got home.
Braveheart and Marathon were all for it and Serenity's household agreed with the idea. They would get the tickets tonight and make the trip the next family adventure. Kairen seemed the most excited about it. Travis assumed that Kairen might be as fanatic as Diamond is, but not as big of playing hirself. The Dancing Lights Clan was set to see the game on Sixthday evening of Week Twenty-three. Travis knew that it would be an experience that would bring him closer to his new family. The thought that these people considered themselves his family always seemed to bring a slight tear to his eye. He loved these people, and he didn't think that would ever change.
That wasn't the only thing that was going on. Remembrance Day was coming up at the end of this week. Dancing Lights Clan were prepping another barbeque and were inviting as many of their friends that could make it. Travis was asked if he had anyone he wanted to bring which brought his thoughts to Baiyoshay. He agreed that he did have one in mind but didn't know how to invite hym. He explained that situation, to which Braveheart said to be patient and maybe Travis would have the opportunity to give the invite. Travis was hopeful that would happen, as he liked talking to Baiyoshay. Even if some of their conversations ended with Travis getting some sense knocked into him.
All in all, Travis was happy. He had a family that loved and cared for him. He was considered a stranger to most of them, yet they welcomed him in with open arms. It was jarring to know how much they cared when he was sure he didn't deserve it. He never voiced that idea, though. Serenity had gone through great efforts to raise his self-confidence and esteem. He wouldn't tear all that good work apart by being a Negative Nancy. His pessimism and cynicism were being dismantled bit by bit. There was still a lot left, but Travis was determined to tackle himself and get his head on right. He'd do it for his family if it meant he could stay with them for the rest of his days.
Remembrance Day always falls on the Sixthday of the Twenty-first Week on Chakona. It was a somber time recalling those who had given their lives in service to Chakona and the Stellar Federation. For Travis and others who had served, the day was spent retelling old stories of comrades lost. He had served for nearly eight years as a mercenary. He had made and lost so many friends in that time. Even those he knew were still alive couldn't talk to him due to operational security and distance. They would still be out on the fringe of space, beyond any hope for reliable communication. He wished those old friends well and that they would meet once again.
Travis had been invited to spend the day with the Dancing Lights Clan at Serenity's request. He had been asked to come sometime before lunch to enjoy a meal together as a family before the neighborhood barbeque later that night. He complied with their request and tried to think of something he could do to pass the time. He decided to play his bass as a warmup for later. Besides, there was nothing else he could do. It also was a great relaxing tool that helps him prepare for the day. He was pretty sure that they were going to ask him more about his life as a mercenary. He would answer as best he could without divulging anything covered by security clearances.
A knock interrupted his playing. That was strange. He wasn't expecting anyone or anything today. Considering that his kit was fully replaced and in his closet, he didn't think his previous employment would send anything else to him. He had to investigate. Looking through the peephole of his door, he saw someone he wasn't expecting at all. He never told them where he lived. Then again, it seemed that they also lived nearby since twice he had seen them in the local area. He quickly opened the door to greet his guest.
“Baiyo! What are you doing here?"
“I came to see you. I wanted to check in with you and see if you heeded my words."
“Well, you'll be happy to know that I accepted hir proposal. Please, come on in! I can tell you more inside." Travis exclaimed as he motioned the Skunktaur in. Travis led them to the living room where Travis offered his couch. Baiyoshay took the offer and patted the spot next to hym. Travis took the spot and asked the question that was burning in his mind. “How did you find out where I was living?"
Baiyo chuckled, “I have my ways. Let's just say, we have a mutual friend that cares about you and wants to see you live well. And before I forget, they say hi and well done. Keep up the good work." Travis was even more puzzled at this reveal. He was pretty sure he didn't have many friends other than Serenity that knew he lived here. Especially those that knew Baiyoshay. This supposed friend must have followed him home and told Baiyo. That was bad as this person would have to be able to avoid his perception. That could be the death of him. Then again, it seems they have been watching him and want him to be happy. He'd let it slide for now, but he was going to start being hyper-vigilant.
“Well, I'm humbled that you and this mysterious stranger care so much for my well-being. I did also appreciate our talks. Even if they end up with me getting busted in the chops." Baiyo chuckled along with the humor. They were acting like old friends even though they met twice. Like Serenity, there was something about hym that pulled him. In this case, it was Baiyoshay's solid advice and personality that drew him in.
“Know that I did it for a reason. You needed the push to achieve peace. I was merely the catalyst." That dislodged a new thought that Travis had been wanting to ask since their last meeting. It was weird that this person was interested in his life. Granted, there were some people who took a special interest in helping others, even strangers. This was different, though. It seemed that there was more to it than just being nice. A lot more.
“Speaking of, why are you and our supposed mutual friend so interested in me? We have barely talked. I mean, I'm not going to complain. My life has changed so much for the better since I've followed your advice."
Baiyo nodded sagely, saying, “I can tell. You have less stress than last I saw you. Life is changing your way. To answer your question, we are interested because you are special and deserving of our attention. You are important to both of us for different reasons." Travis felt a little blushy from those words but recovered quickly. He was getting used to receiving affection from others. Serenity had been working on him constantly to some effect. “But just checking in on you isn't the only reason why I came by."
“Oh? Then what's the other reason?"
“I came to warn you. Trials and tribulations are coming for you, and they will bring you to the brink." Hy reached out a hand to Travis and gripped his shoulder. Travis started into Baiyo's milky eyes in wonder and fear. He could feel the weight behind the words. This wasn't the normal pep talk someone gives to be wary of Murphy. This was more of a prophecy. It was like Baiyo could see the future, which isn't unheard of for certain Skunktaurs. “I don't want to see you destroy yourself."
“What do you mean? Can you really predict what the future holds for me?" Baiyo shook hys head. Hys face took a very earnest look of pain and sadness that looked out of place. Baiyo seemed like a generally well put together person. Seeing hym change so rapidly worried Travis.
“I can't personally, but our mutual friend sort of can. They fear for the future if certain things don't happen as they should. Already, disaster has been averted once. But there are events that must happen, and you must be prepared." Well, if that wasn't ominous, then Travis was a monkey's uncle. Things were getting too strange for him. He had half the mind to throw Baiyoshay out for this demanded idea, but something in his mind kept those words from escaping. It was like a mental block had been placed that was not his own doing.
“Baiyo, what's going on, man? You're not telling me something."
“I know, love. I'm sorry, but I can't tell you anymore. Just know that I don't want any harm to come to you and Serenity. I am doing everything in my power to ensure that the best possible outcome happens." There was a moment of silence as Travis digested hys words. He then realized something. He never did mention Serenity's name to hym. How did hy know?
“How do you know hir name?"
“Travis, please." The sincerity in hys words stopped any further arguing. “I know you want answers. I can't give them to you just yet. Several more things must happen before I can share what I know. This is for your protection, as well as the protection of your new family. Just trust me. I know what I'm doing." Travis had a snappy comeback that he had used several times on self-assured people who didn't know their ass from their elbow. The difference this time was that Travis had something pushing in his head to trust in Baiyo's words. This wasn't one of those people who thought they knew everything but didn't. This person knew exactly what they were talking about, and that's what scared him the most. If Baiyo was right, then things were coming. He'd have to rely on hys advice if he wanted to survive whatever was coming.
“Alright, Baiyo. Something is telling me to trust you, and it's definitely not me. It's a little disconcerting."
“I know. You fear losing control of your life and having everything you hold dear be taken from you. Just know that you have people on your side, Travis. I am one of them, and so is Serenity. We both care about you. Nothing will change that." Baiyo pulled Travis in and enveloped him in a hug. It was firm and held so much with it. Travis returned the embrace as different feelings rushed through him. He caught glimpses and flashes of something standing behind Baiyo, but it wouldn't register clearly. As soon as he tried to focus on it, it would disappear. He put it out of his mind as his brain playing tricks on him.
“If you really mean that, Baiyo, then I'll trust you." Baiyo nuzzled his hair. Travis could feel hym take a shuddering breath and slowly release it out. Hy seemed to relax and ease so much tension from that acceptance.
“Thank you, love. You don't know how much that means to me." They separated from the hug, Baiyo seeming far happier than when hy first arrived. Hy gave a smile that didn't quite reach the eyes, but it was a step up from the near look of horror from earlier. Travis decided to drop the entire discussion for now. He would bring it up again if the chance presented itself. It will remain business as usual till then. Baiyo gathered hymself and asked, “So, you finally told Serenity your feelings. How'd that go?"
Travis answered, “Better than I ever thought possible. I'm still surprised that shi actually wants me. It's been a bit of a roller coaster if I'm being honest."
“Relationships always have their ups and downs. I'm really proud of you, love. I'm so glad you faced your fears and overcame them." Travis grinned slightly at hys praise. He leaned back against the couch and popped a leg up.
“You know, if you had told me when I first stepped foot on Gateway that I would end up in a relationship with a Chakat, I'd have laughed you off. I never expected that I would find such a good Companion."
“That's the thing with life: you never can expect what may come. I can show you the best path, but you are the one that must walk it. I just hope you trust me enough to do so." Travis went silent and thought about that. Did he trust Baiyoshay? They had even less time together than he and Serenity. Then again, making friends was always harder in the beginning. He decided that since Baiyo has been trying to be straight and honest with him, he'd extend the olive branch of peace.
“I'm going to, Baiyo. I'll trust you since you haven't steered me wrong yet."
“I hope I never do. You are a good man, Travis. A very good man that's been hurt too many times. At least now you can find love and family." That last word brought back something that he had nearly forgotten. Since hy was here, might as well ask. The worse hy could say was no.
“Speaking of family, mine is having a barbeque for Remembrance Day. Would you like to join us?"
Baiyo grinned and said, “Sure. I'd love to. What time?"
“Well, I was planning on leaving in the next few minutes or so to have lunch with them. I'm pretty sure they won't mind me inviting you over." Travis went to his PADD and quickly typed out a message to Braveheart and Serenity. Almost immediately, Braveheart answered back with a positive response to his request. They were looking forward to meeting new people. The more the merrier was their motto. Baiyoshay seemed to be a little hesitant about going, but Travis assured hym that they were good people. Baiyoshay confirmed that he knew that. Hy was more worried about the reaction to hym being blind. Hy was not a fan of having people go out of their way just to accommodate hym. Travis said that they wouldn't. All Baiyo had to do was explain his situation and everything should be fine. Baiyoshay reluctantly agreed to that logic.
They soon left Travis' apartment for Azure Beach. The bus to the train station was the easy part. Getting from East Hill to Azure beach was a little harder. Holiday travelers were going all over the place for Remembrance Day and the three-day weekend. During the train ride, Travis was forced to squish next to Baiyo to save room for other passengers. Baiyo didn't seem to mind as hy placed an arm around Travis to steady him. They enjoyed the closeness till their stop came. They were mere minutes away from reaching their destination. Travis couldn't keep the grin off his face the entire time.
Serenity and hir entire family were busy preparing for the barbeque when a knock sounded at the door. Lapis ran for the door claiming shi'll get it. When the door was opened, shi squealed in happiness. A gruff noise indicated that Lapis did hir usual glomping that shi was famous for. The laughter that pealed out from the front room brought a smile to Serenity's face. Shi heard hir Companion complain that Lapis was attacking him with licks. Lapis' response seemed to be a giggle and more licks.
Travis started sputtering out, “Oi, stahp tat! No more licky-licky! Ack! Help! Aggressive kitteh is licking meh!" Laughter sounded out from around the house. Serenity looked to the family room where most of the rest of the Clan were sitting. Diamond had fallen to the floor in laughter while pointing at what Serenity assumed was Travis getting loved on. Sequoia stood up from hir position and pawed over to help the trapped Human. Serenity moved to the family room from hir place in the kitchen.
When shi rounded the wall that divided the kitchen from the main hall, shi saw Travis holding the squirming kitten as shi continued to cling to him. Standing next to him was a Skunktaur that Serenity didn't recognize. Shi noticed that the fur coloration and pattern were not normal for a Skunktaur, given that the two patterns most commonly seen were either striped or spotted. The one thing that instantly caught hir attention was the fact that hys eyes were clouded over. Shi couldn't see a walking cane in hys possession, but hy didn't seem to need it.
When Travis finally got Lapis to stop licking him, he finally was able to start introductions. “Baiyo, this is the Dancing Lights Clan. They have kind of taken it upon themselves to be my new family of sorts. Guys, this is Baiyoshay of House Bluepaw. Hy's someone very dear to me. Hy gave me advice on how to approach my feelings, and to finally give Serenity my answer. Without hys support, I wouldn't have been part of this family." Introductions were given around, each member coming up to give the traditional hug. After that was taken care of, Travis took a seat on the couch with Lapis still clinging to him. Everyone else either went to the kitchen to help with lunch or sat around in the family room.
Lunch was served about twenty minutes after Baiyoshay and Travis arrived. The conversation had flowed easily amongst them, the Clan easily accepting Baiyoshay. It was during those conversations that Travis' assumptions about Baiyo's talent were confirmed. Baiyo did indeed use hys talent to see. It was akin to having a three-dimensional map that only hy could use. To demonstrate the basic range hy had, hy claimed hy could feel the PTV's going up and down the street. Hy could also see their neighbors next door were also having lunch on their back porch. That proved why hy didn't need a walking cane and showed that hy could never be snuck upon. Lapis tried a few times to disprove that notion but ended up getting grabbed long before shi could pounce. Baiyo didn't mind that, as it gave hym an excuse to exercise hys abilities beyond work.
That led to an entire discussion on what everyone did for a living. Baiyo said that hys abilities gave hym a major advantage as a Crime Scene Investigator. Combined with hys slight astral projection and empathic abilities, hy could recreate the history of objects. Hy could see exactly what that object had gone through, where it had roughly been, and who handled it. It was a type of clairvoyance called psychometry that Baiyo had developed since hy could remember. The energy levels required for an object were dependent on how long and deep hy tried to use this ability. This skill could be used on people, but that was much harder than objects. Too much interference from the soul of a person, hy claimed. Hy had solved several cases using this ability for the Amistad Crime Scene Investigation Bureau and Amistad Police Department.
During a quiet period, Travis was cuddled up next to Serenity while Diamond squished him to hir older sister. It was an interesting position, seeing as Diamond's whole body was obscuring most of Travis. Hir head was resting on the forelegs of the older 'Kat while the rest of hir was pressed against Travis. Travis was loving how nice it was to be in his position. Lapis had decided to wander over to Baiyoshay and was trying to capture hys large, fluffy tail. Because of hys talent, hy could keep hys tail relatively safe from the cub's grasp. But, in the spirit of play, hy allowed hir to grab onto hym every so often. Travis watched the by-play with a happy little smile. This was the life he wanted. The family atmosphere was what he had wished for as a boy.
Sequoia, Kairen, and Amethyst were sitting near Baiyoshay, seemingly talking about their favorite movies or some such thing. Braveheart and Marathon were canoodling together in the corner, being all lovey and cute. The two of them whispering and laughing together was so sweet, Travis swore he'd get a cavity. Those two had been together for over thirty years and were still acting like randy teenagers at times. To Travis, that was everything love should be. Even lifemates should still be dating each other well after decades together.
Serenity felt his joy at hir parents' antics and used an arm to pull him in tighter against hir side. Diamond snuggled further in the space he had left behind. The twin purrs were lulling him into a relaxed state. His mind felt calm and peaceful. Serenity could tell this was a healing moment for hir Companion. The pain and self-hatred shi had felt before were nowhere to be found now. The tranquility of this moment was picture perfect. There were things, though, that was different. Travis would get a whiff of something sweet and tangy every so often. It was coming from Serenity, but he couldn't quite get what it was. The pleasant smell had the double effect of enticing and soothing him. A primal yearning was building within him. He wanted to ignore it and shook his head slightly to get his mind back on track.
Diamond noticed the discomfort and got a mischievous thought flowing in hir mind. Shi leaned further onto Travis, resting hir head near his ear. He felt hir warm breath, and for a moment was thinking things were going to get out of hand. His first instinct was to push hir away. His body didn't respond to any commands he sent. It froze on him like someone had pulled the plug to his nervous system. The sweet words from Diamond floated into his ear like a soft breeze.
“My sister started hir heat yesterday. That's what you're smelling." Serenity heard hir sister's whispering and gave hir a swat upside the head. Diamond merely laughed and poked Serenity right in the ribs. “Now, don't tell me you aren't thinking of running away with him for some fun. I know how you get, sis. You couldn't do anything about it yesterday, so I bet the first chance you get, you'll be riding either him or Sequoia." Serenity's ears went flat to hir skull, and hir tail curled around hir in embarrassment. While this may have been a rude thing to oust in public, the home was not as restrictive. Especially since Chakats were very free with regards to the body. Hir embarrassment was more from what Travis might think. He was only Human, after all.
“Oh?" Travis asked gently. “So that's what that is." He inhaled deeply and let the scent linger in his lungs. Being Human, he wasn't as affected by Serenity's heat as others would be. That didn't mean he wasn't affected at all. “I like it. Smells nice"
“Oh! Seems like you do." Travis went through another record scratch moment. He now realized that he had gone all excited, and Diamond could feel something pressing into hir side. He went a deep tomato red and started to stammer out an apology. Diamond laughed at his blubbering and gave him a lick-kiss on the nose. It was just enough to get him to shut up. “I'll leave you two alone for now. Enjoy yourself, sis!" Travis stared at the retreating teen in shock and awe. This was way beyond what he was expecting. Then again, he wasn't really trying to expect anything since he wasn't a Chakat. There were just some things that he would have to get used to, it seems.
Serenity grumbled, “I'm going to hit hir with a pillow later. Maybe even smother hir with it."
“Oh, no. You don't want to do that. You need to make it look like an accident." Shi looked behind at him to see him grinning at hir. He waggled his eyebrows in that universal sign of mischievousness. He leaned forward till he was level with hir ear and whispered, “Hold hir under the water till the bubbles stop." They both laughed at the joke, which included Travis getting swatted himself with a pillow. That ended up devolving into them jockeying for position as they tried to tickle torture the other.
During said competition, Serenity managed to use hir forelimbs to pin Travis to the couch. He, however, managed to grab the wrists of hir arms to prevent any more tickling. They were technically at a stalemate. They were nose to muzzle, staring at each other's eyes. Their lips met in a loving kiss. That was the end of their tickle fight. The coos and whistles from the others around them brought them back from their little world. The audience seemed pleased with their little performance.
Baiyo decided to tease the couple a little bit with, “A smashing performance by the couple. Let's see what the judges have to say about that." Hy turned his attention to Amethyst, Sequoia, and Kairen sitting nearby. They looked to each other, seemed to hold a conference, then each held up fingers to indicate a score. “A nine, another nine, and a ten! Amazing, a near-perfect score! Let's hear from Kairen about hir thoughts!"
Kairen cleared hir thought and said in a close rendition of a judge's voice, “I give that a solid ten. Great execution, just the right amount of cuteness, and several heaping dashes of lustful tension to finish it off. A great performance, I must say."
“Oh, put a sock in it, Kai!" Travis exclaimed. The pillow that Serenity had used on him smashed right into Kairen's muzzle. Laughter engulfed the house as Kairen made a show of considering hir score, then hold up a single hand. “I change my mind. You get a zero for throwing a pillow at the judge."
“Zero?!" Serenity said aghast. “Blasphemy! En garde!" Shi hopped off the couch and charged Kairen with a different pillow. Instead of running, Kairen accepted the charge and tried to keep hir at bay. What shi didn't expect was for Baiyo to get in on the fun. Hy hopped onto hir lower back and pinned hir down. Serenity only had to deal with Kairen's arms, which was easily accomplished. Serenity was grinning impishly with Kairen. They exchanged a deep kiss together, which Kairen seemed to enjoy.
“Oh, that was nice," Kairen moaned out. Shi was soon released by Baiyoshay and Serenity. Kairen got a hold of hirself before saying, “Alright. I'll make it a nine for the kiss." Chuckles came all around. Travis' was the least mirthful. He quickly clamped down on his emotions before the others could tell. He didn't know where that dark thought came from, but it had no business trying to ruin the day.
As the Clan got themselves under control, Braveheart stepped away from hir mate and said, “Alright everyone! Enough fooling around. It's almost time for our guests to arrive. Let's get the tables and chairs set up out back and the food ready. Move it, people!" They quickly moved around the house to pick up a few last-minute items and put them in place. Marathon had pulled a couple of tables out from a storage shed outback. Travis and Diamond had helped pull a few folding chairs out for the few bipeds that would be arriving shortly. Travis' had moved his bass to a closet along with his amp and PADD. He also hid a special bag of goodies that would come into play later.
It was almost ten minutes later when the first guest arrived. The guests were mostly Chakats and Skunktaurs, but there was the occasional alien or morph. There were a few family members, as Serenity did say some did live in Amistad. There was only one Human out of the bunch, an elderly gentleman by the name of Jeremiah Cooper. Jeremiah, or Jer-Bear as Braveheart called him, was their oldest friend. He had been one of the lawyers in the law firm Braveheart worked at when shi first started hir law career. They had become partners for a while before taking on different cases. He had retired a couple of years ago but remained in contact with Braveheart.
The entire house was now alive with activity. People were conversing over drinks and food. Braveheart was working overtime to get the main course finished with the help of Diamond. As people were getting settled in for the barbeque, Travis stood off to the side of the backyard. The way this neighborhood was designed, there was no real back fence. Instead, a hedge was made to cordon off the Dancing Light Clan's backyard from their neighbors. There was enough room on the west side of the house for the storage shed, a covered back patio with a grill, and a nice fire pit that would be amazing to use during the fall and winter. There was a single tree in the backyard with several strings of lights wrapped around it. With the sun setting, Braveheart had turned on the patio and tree lights. The setting was exactly how a barbeque should look.
Travis had sequestered himself by the tree, observing the guests with a neutral expression. His surface-level thoughts were on how he was one of the few people here wearing any clothes. The other Human was the only other one who did, besides the odd biped. Most were either in the buff or in some light clothing. Deeper inside, he was thinking many different thoughts about where he stood in his relationship with Serenity. It was difficult to see exactly what was going through his mind, especially since he didn't want anyone else knowing what he was thinking. He had perfected his mask to allow no room for leakage. His mental control was to the level where he could effectively blend into a crowd. He'd be like a shadow, a blurry face, just another person in the crowd. He had done that plenty of times in his old job. It's probably saved his life a few times as well. It was a skill he had honed out of sheer necessity for his own safety and the safety of his comrades. He was the silent operator, watching from the shadows.
So deep was he in his thoughts, he never noticed someone approaching him. He felt a tap on his shoulder. The sudden interruption nearly made him jump out of his skin. He turned to see an apologetic Baiyoshay standing beside him. Travis put a hand to his heart and blew out a soft curse.
“Jeez, Baiyo," he started to complain. “Going to have to put a freaking bell on you if you can just sneak up on me like that."
Baiyo laughed and said, “Maybe." Hy leaned on the tree facing Travis, crossing hys forelegs. His smile slowly fell away as something caught hys attention. “Travis, what have I told you about using that brain of yours?"
“I know, I know. I use it too much. Heh, sorry, Baiyo. I get hyper-focused on subjects that are puzzling, or important."
“I know," Baiyo hummed sympathetically. “But that causes you to miss big things as they happen, love. Is there any way I can help?"
“Yeah, no. I think I need to figure this one out myself. Thanks for the offer, though."
“You know you can talk to me about anything, right? And not just me. Serenity, Amethyst, Kairen, Sequoia, even Braveheart and Marathon. We all care for you in one form or fashion. Any one of us would be willing to talk to you if you need help."
“I know, Baiyo. I'm sorry. It's a Human thing I need to work out by myself. There's no need to bother you with something inconsequential."
“Nothing that upsets or confuses you are a bother, or inconsequential, love. Your ideas, voice, and being are just as valid as anyone else's." Travis gave a shrug and returned to people watching. He knew this problem he had come from his Human side. Jealousy was not something Chakats were able to experience. By extension, most other species besides Humans were open to more unconventional forms of relationships. Growing up in a very bad area and being abused kind of stunted Travis' mental growth in that regard. He had recovered from that time, but there were still little bits and pieces of his childhood that showed up.
He sighed and turned back to Baiyo. He didn't want to say anything for fear of looking stupid or clingy. Besides, he was the outsider in the Clan. He had accepted the offer of Companionship because he was afraid he would miss out on love. What he didn't expect was to become part of those unorthodox relationships that Chakats were known for. He was freaking himself out for no good reason, yet his mind wouldn't stop playing all sorts of ideas through his head. He struggled right there to let go of his Human feelings and be more like the Chakats. In so doing, his mind rebelled against him. He just couldn't get his mind to operate the same way.
“Thanks for the support, Baiyo. Let me think about this for a few days. If I need your advice, I'll get in touch. Deal?"
“Deal. Let's go enjoy ourselves. Whatever Braveheart is cooking smells absolutely delightful." Travis couldn't agree more.
The food was served buffet-style, with people coming and going with full plates. Most people were interested in catching up with old friends or family members, while some of the youngsters were running around playing. Travis quietly moved near Diamond and Lapis and whispered something in their ear. They both nodded and followed him to the side of the house. There, they saw a bucket he had requisitioned filled with water. Also inside was a collection of water balloons, all filled and ready to go.
“Alright, you two. Ready to play a prank on the adults?" The glee both showed told Travis all he needed to know. “Okay, here's the plan." He started quietly telling them what they were to do. They both nodded and began Operation: Blunderbuss. All the youngsters were gathered up on the side of the house. The adults were none the wiser about the plan that was concocted. Except for Baiyo, since hy could see everything they were doing. Hy would play along with the fun. It wasn't every day hy got to see a prank in action.
Braveheart was talking to one of hir sisters, specifically one of the few officers of Starfleet in the extended family. They were discussing the recent birth of their cousin's Skunktaur son just last week. They were just getting to the point of discussing getting gifts for the mother when something landed right on Braveheart's head. Hir hair was usually put up in a braided crown to stay out of hir face and look professional at the office. Today, shi had let it down to relax and enjoy the weather. It was unfortunate that the water balloon had splashed water all over hir head. Now hir hair was sticking to hir back. Hir bangs were even dripping water into hir eyes. Shi cleared them and looked to where the projectile had come from. Travis stood by the house with all the kids. In each of their hands was a water balloon.
“I hereby declare everyone is too dry! For those who don't want to get wet, better head indoors while you still got a chance! For those who are willing to chance it, why don't you all cool off! Open fire!" Travis chucked the one in his hand, which hit Serenity right in the chest. Serenity looked down at hir wet fur before grinning up at hir Companion. The next few minutes devolved into playful chaos at that point. The adult scrambled to get away from their kids and the watery projectiles they held. Some went inside to avoid getting wet at all, others decided to join in on the fun. It was soon discovered that several more buckets of water balloons had been placed in strategic locations by Travis as part of the fun. Soon, the adults were tossing back their own balloons into an all-out water war.
Once the balloons had run out, Lapis had grabbed the hose and dosed hir parents to soaking. They confiscated the hose from hir and returned the favor. Travis had been laughing at their predicament, which landed him getting sprayed as well. Pretty soon, everyone was happily tired from the game. However, someone had to be punished for starting this war. The scapegoat ended up being Travis since he brought the balloons and instigated the whole thing. He was soon captured by Serenity who held him to hir chest. While he wouldn't complain about the feeling of twin peaks pressing into his back, he was more worried about Braveheart holding the hose.
“So," Braveheart began haughtily. “You thought you could start a water balloon fight and win, did you?"
Travis shrugged. “It was worth the shot."
“You've been a bad influence on my daughters. I think some just punishment is in order." Shi changed the setting on the nozzle and gave it an experimental squeeze. The waterfall that poured out warned Travis of his watery fate.
“Oh, no! Please, no, shir! Anything but that! Have mercy!" he yelled playfully.
“Sorry, all out of mercy," shi said. The water soon flowed in a deluge on top of his head, soaking him through his clothes. He sat there as both he and Serenity were soaked by the hose. After a while, Braveheart finally let the water stop. “There. Now I hope you learned your lesson, boy. Start another water war, and we'll be sure to extract punishment."
“Oh, kinky. Should I be calling you master, then?"
“Oh, no," Kairen spoke up from behind Braveheart. “You'll call hir mistress." Travis' entire face lit up bright red in a blush. He felt Serenity start to purr behind him, which intensified the blush. Shi leaned forward and growled slightly in his ear.
Shi said, “I kind of like the sound of that. Maybe you should start calling me that in the bedroom." He groaned in pleasure and embarrassment as hir teeth soon found his neck. His blood soon left the brain and rocketed down south to his growing erection. This was way too damn hot! He needed space to breathe!
“Easy there, lover boy," Serenity said after shi released him from hir grasp. “I don't think you're ready to give everyone a show." He stood up in soggy clothes, shoes squelching with every step he took.
“Maybe someday, but today is not that day. I need to get to my change of clothes. I'm all wet and cold." That was punctuated by a light sneeze from him.
The sun had set, yet the barbeque was still going. Dessert had been served and the kids had been settled in one of the guest rooms to watch a movie about an hour ago. Diamond offered to chaperone the little horde and sat with them through the movie. Sequoia acted as a liaison between that group and the adults. Speaking of, most of the adults had gathered in the family room around the fire place. Travis had changed his clothes and was sitting next to the fire to keep warm. The other beings were all quietly conversing in low tones. After a few minutes, the conversations died down. A solemn time of quiet contemplation washed over the group.
Travis knew exactly what everyone was thinking about. Remembrance Day was to recall those who served and died in Federation service. Some of those members had been part of this group in some way. Serenity leaned hir head against his shoulder as silent tears fell from hir eyes. The feeling of slight melancholy overtook the group. Not a single eye amongst the adults was dry. The air had that tinge of sadness, but there was also a bit of joy tucked away. While the pain of loss was still felt, memories of the time those friends and family were still alive eased the pain. Travis was no different as he recalled all the good times he had with his old team. May their souls find peace in whatever afterlife there is.
Braveheart stood as host and raised the bottle of Chakonan beer shi had, saying, “Friends. Family. Loved ones. Today, we remember those who gave their lives in service to the Federation and Chakona." Shi looked around at each face, identifying and acknowledging each and every person in attendance. “They knew what they were signing up for. They knew the risks and took them anyway. They did so with courage and honor. We will never forget them. Their names will forever be etched on our hearts and souls." Shi wiped a dear from hir eyes as a memory seemed to pass through hir mind. Shi gathered hirself and raised hir bottle higher. Everyone else raised theirs in comradery. “A toast to those who sacrificed everything for freedom and valor. To the fallen!"
Everyone replied with, “To the fallen!" After taking the customary sip, light murmuring followed. Travis stared into the flames as he finished the last of his beer. A song whispered its way into his head. It was very old, from the time of sailing ships crossing the seven seas of Terra. It fit with the day, which hurt even more. He never did say goodbye to his comrades when he was medically discharged. In fact, he had purposely avoided them. His heart ached to apologize for being such a horrible friend. Maybe when he gets the chance, he'd find them and tell them himself. Until then, he just had to keep on keeping on.
He started to hum the song as he lightly rocked back and forth. Serenity felt the change and looked over to him. He felt hir eyes on him, which caused him to stop. A sheepish grin crossed his features as he noticed that shi wasn't the only one staring at him. Everyone was interested in what he had been doing.
“Sorry, got a song stuck in my head."
Marathon asked, “Do you want to share it?" Travis thought for a moment before standing up. This would be the perfect opportunity to enjoy his hobby with others. It was exactly the right time in his opinion.
“Give me a second, need to grab my bass." He quickly ran inside to the closet he had stashed it. A few seconds later, he came back out with everything he needed. He did a quick tune to make sure he was in the proper key. He cast his gaze around as he explained the song. “This is an old sea shanty from the days of wind-powered sailing ships. Now, some shanties were used to pass the time or to keep a cadence while working. This one, though, fits with the theme of the day. It's saying goodbye to your crew and friends. I think you'll enjoy it." He gave a few notes to get the tune before starting the song. The haunting melody was simple yet powerful.

“Kind friends and companions, come join me in rhyme.
Come lift up your voices in chorus with mine.
Come lift up your voices all grief to refrain,
For we may or might never all meet here again.
_ _
Here's a health to the company and one to my lass.
Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass.
Let us drink and be merry all grief to refrain,
For we may or might never all meet here again. "
There was a new energy that came forth from the audience. The floodgates had been opened as every empathetic being felt and projected the emotional roller coaster this song gave them. Serenity was amazed at how well he was singing with these turbulent emotions crashing into him. His voice was light and gentle to hir ears. Shi watched as he sang his heart out for them. Shi moved a little closer and rested a handpaw on his knee. He looked at hir and smiled softly as the next verse came from his lips.

“Here's a health to the dear lass that I love so well,
For hir style and hir beauty, sure none can excel.
There's a smile on hir countenance as shi sits by my knee.
There's no man in this wide world as happy as me.
_ _
Here's a health to the company and one to my lass.
Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass.
Let us drink and be merry all grief to refrain,
For we may or might never all meet here again. "
Everyone joined in on the chorus as one voice. It flowed over the house just as their emotions did. They had all stood as one as the chorus came and lifted their own glasses to the song. Even Serenity with hir beautiful voice joined in next to him. Hir handpaw gripped him in support as shi rocked in time with the tune. Tears freely flowed as they listened to the next verse from Travis.

“Our ship lies at anchor, she's ready to dock.
I wish her safe landing, without any shock.
If ever I should meet you by land, air, or sea,
I will always remember your kindness to me.
_ _
Here's a health to the company and one to my lass.
Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass.
Let us drink and be merry all grief to refrain,
For we may or might never all meet here again.

Here's a health to the company and one to my lass.
Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass.
Let us drink and be merry all grief to refrain,
For we may or might never all meet here again. "
As the song concluded, his audience erupted in cheers. He felt good. Tranquil, even. It was like a high had come over him as the feeling of elation rushed through his body. Serenity hugged him to hir and laughed with everyone. Congratulations were passed to him for the great song to end the night. It was in fact getting late, and the movie was just about to be over. They talked together for a few more minutes before the adults filed back into the house. The movie credits were scrolling, meaning that they had impeccable timing. Parents grabbed their youngsters and made their own way home. Goodnights and “see you later" were wished all around as the guests filed out.
The house was much quieter with everyone gone. Braveheart and Marathon went to go get Lapis ready for bed while the others started cleaning up. With as many hands as they had, they made short work of the messes left behind. Travis had packed his bass and now dry clothes from earlier. He was just about to head out when Amethyst stopped him.
“Where are you going?"
“Home. It's getting late."
“Why not stay the night again? I'm sure Serenity wouldn't object, and neither will my parents. What do you say?" He looked over to the others standing nearby. Braveheart came over with a nearly asleep Lapis in hir arms. Shi reached over with a free hand to grasp his own.
“It's your decision, but I think I speak for all of us that we would like for you to stay the night." Travis looked one last time to Serenity who merely nodded. Mind made up, he agreed to the offer. “Splendid! Baiyoshay, you're also invited to stay the night. Please, make yourself at home." Hy also agreed to the arrangement.
The Clan went to the linen closet in the hall to pull out enough sleeping mats for the night. They all settled in the family room and chose cuddle partners for the night. Travis decided to say screw it and stripped to his boxers. While he was still getting used to being in a Chakat household, he was still not fully comfortable with the casual nudity. In time he will gain enough confidence to forgo all clothes. In the meantime, he laid himself down on one of the mats to the outside of the group. He ended up being cuddled by Lapis again as shi decided his chest would make a good pillow. Baiyoshay took one side of him while Marathon took the other. Serenity became his pillow as all four furred beings kept him nice and toasty warm. Once all were settled for the evening, they drifted off to sleep. Today had been a very good day.
