The Pokémon Master, a title any Pokémon trainer wanted to have, a title that showed that years of training and dedication to one's end goal; could happen. Trainers picking six Pokémon to bring with them, to fight the best of the best, for the chance to come up to the Champion of their Region to win, or to lose. In my region there were different ways one could become part of the Pokémon Championship. The easiest and hardest way at the same time was to test one Pokémon, as well as the Trainer to see if they knew enough of Pokémon to begin with. For their Pokémon it was how strong they were, and the trainer had to answer a twenty page test and MUST pass with a one hundred percent. It was rare but it could happen and they would be part when the Championship would start.
The next was anyone from years before who had collected the gym badges and lost, if they wish to come back to redo it, they must pay a fine to be entered into the Championship once more, this was mostly the easiest for one if they already had the badges, but they couldn't do it again the next year; basically it was a retry moment for them.
The last way was as many would call, the classic way; badges. Go around the region collecting eight gym badges and that was considered your ticket to get into the championship. But everyone had to start at the same gym and go the same number way, because with the badges, only 20 trainers would make it through, so once a gym leader ran out of badges, anyone else, that was it, they lost their chance to join until the next year.
All in all, at least forty-eight trainers would be allowed to join in the championship, where they would fight their way until only one of them remained, then, that one trainer for the next four days would fight the Elite Four, if they lost once, that was it, all known trainers would not be able to fight the champion, this would give known gym Leaders a chance to try and if they failed too, then the Four would fight...in the end it would be a one on one battle.
Yes this was the dream of many, me, not so much, it was the dream of my mother, who wanted to drill it into me since I was a child...and I guess it never drilled deep enough.
My family on my mother side were very well known in the Pokémon Region, my aunt, Alice; a well known Pokémon professor always working on ways for humans and Pokémon to bond and become closer and closer. A builder in her youth she even worked on as she traveled to build a Pokémon translator, it worked somewhat; though the voice was more robotic then anything, however tech had to start somewhere. She soon gave up the life of battle when she found studying Pokémon was much more entertaining to her, and her secondly job was taking care of abused Pokémon, building bridges and even helping humans terrified of Pokémon with their fears. Because of this many Pokémon who were once untrusting of humans, left with those very humans who were scared of them.
My uncle, Chris, many would call me lucky; he was the current Champion, unbeaten since he took the chair of champion at the age of sixteen. Unlike most trainers, my grandparents wanted to wait until all their children were at least sixteen and promised to save a lot of money and Pokéballs if they agreed, if they wanted to leave early they would pay for everything; they waited. Because he was Champion growing up I would go to Champion Castle, see the arena where they would do battle and the large stage where many could see it live, or over the cameras for the region to see. Spending the time in the champion home, which was indeed almost like a huge castle in a way. It wasn't his home, and when he would lose if he ever did one day, he would have to move out for the next champion. And then; my mother.
My mother was crazy with being the best of the best, working hard and basically pushing her team, even threatening them to just get rid of them, to which she did a lot of the time, if they were weak in her eyes, just abandoned them somewhere. Growing up, it wasn't common for her to leave with a Pokémon one day and come back without it, selling it to someone else, or just up and leaving it in the wild, when she went on her first adventure, she lost and came in second, right behind my uncle who became the champion, and the thing was, she was always offered a spot as a Four member never a Gym Leader because they were scared no one would be able to beat her. Whenever one of the Four offered her the spot, she always turned it down, it was almost like she considered it a insult in a way to be offered that spot even though she more so earned the title; after a while the Championship Legion just stopped calling her.
So year after year, she went, gym battle after gym battle, collecting badges over and over again. Beating everyone when they came to her; pushed the Four back showing she was not weak...but when it came to her older brother, it was like she was a noob compared to him. She only had one style, and he knew how to counter it, and sure others knew what she was like but it was like they couldn't counter like Chris could; his team were light and hit heavy, while mother's were just heavy and slow. And to put insult to the wound she always lost to the same first Pokémon, that he claimed was his 'weakest' member.
After another lost, she just went to the bar to drown herself, to which she met my father. My father was a kind man, not a Pokémon trainer but a sort of daycare Pokémon but he was a very shy and timid man. My mother got drunk as they talked, one thing led to another and they went to a nearby motel...and that was the day I was conceived. My mother didn't even like him at all, and only told him because her family told her that he should have the right to know! Heck she just wanted to once I was born just go back to again doing the Pokémon Championship, showing that her love wasn't even for her yet to be born child.
My father was extremely happy to know he was having a child, more so then my own mother, he learned quickly through her months how uninterested she was of the life they had made, in a drunken night. It got to the point where he even went to court with papers showing proof how uncaring she was, but she made it easier; she just signed the papers saying that once she was done birthing me and doing the minimal time with me to make sure I was healthy; she would give up all rights as the mother.
I didn't' know much of my father, I was told as I grew up I looked much like him, I got much from him and barely anything of my mother, the reason I didn't know much of him, he died. A local gang wanted to try and steal some Pokémon and thought he was hiding the best somewhere, when he refused or said he didn't know, he was shot and killed, this was all before I was even born.
Because of this, she was in a sense, stuck with me. My father side of the family couldn't take care of me because they were half way across the world and barely could afford which what they had, much less a baby. Luckily my grandparents on my mother side, who also lived right across from my Aunt agreed to take care of me, HOWEVER, she couldn't go anywhere until I was of age to be a Pokémon trainer legally. Basically thinking because I was my mother son, I would want to go out early...and this cause the little ding of her head to go off, so when I was old enough to walk and talk...she trained me in Pokémon battling; and I hated it.
