A dragons return 2
An Old Beginning.
I woke up sweating, pulling the covers of me.
"Damn..." I said to myself.
I had been having the same nightmare for months now...
My childhood played itself over and over into my head. It had been seven years ago, and only now, have I just gotten to Isla Suno. The sailor, Sampson, died after being bitten by a poisonous spider the size of a dog. It didn't kill him, his dagger did. I sucked the poison out as best I could, but he committed suicide, imagining that the spider's baby spiderlings were crawling all over him, after stabbing himself seventeen times, and then once in the eye, he looked oddly add peace for a dead man after going through immense pain.
A few days afterwards and a burial for Sammy, I met a Magi called Velucia. A Magi is a person who practised small arts of trickery and manipulation for coins and got away without anyone knowing. She had tried to trick me out of Sammy's knife, because it had a ruby at the end (Which I found out had just been a red worthless stone.) I called her bluff and she said she liked me. For helping her with getting coins, she'd travel with me to Isla Suno. She taught me one of my greatest intimidation techniques. A few specks of ash drenched in some mysterious liquid into my eye, and I could make them glow and give off blue steam that listed for a few minutes. We were still travelling actually. We didn't sleep in the same room though, after a particularly bad night involving a suspicious yellow powder, she tried to make me have sex. When I told her, she paid full expense to keep our sleeping quarters separate.
On the road, I had acquired some armour of a group of bandits. Just a chest plate and a blue loin cloth that seemed to scare people more. I had also asked a friend of hers to make me a sword. What I got in return was a hand and a half sword. A sword that can be held in two hands lightly, with the same devastation power as a normal two hand sword, or it can be used in one hand and is heavier than a longsword, but with the same dangerous potential as a two hand. Soon, I became more than a manipulator trying to get a few coins out of people, to a bodyguard for Velucia. It took us seven years to get to the border. Seven! We backtracked by accident asking directions from a guy who took our coins gladly, and pointed us south, the opposite way. When we returned two years later, he gladly gave back the money and an extra couple of gold coins in return of not being run through with my sword.
We had finally gotten to the border, and parting ways was a sad affair. "Stay safe and wash behind your ears." Then after giving me some extra coins, she gave me a hug and was about to walk away when I asked her to give me my money pouch back. "Always be careful." She said, handing it back. I held out my other hand a raised my eye scales. She blushed, then handed me my other one.
"Thank you." I said.
After jiggling a pouch worth of seven years of coins she said "No, thank you."
She smiled and then skipped away.
After wiping the sweat away from my head, I had a breakfast of some salted pork, washing it down with some water. I then gathered my meagre possessions: My sword, armour, some coins, some dried meat and a strip of cloth, what was left of my clothes on the day I was swept away from my parents. I had given up hope of seeing my mother again. And then I left the inn.
Outside, the market place was just picking up. Buyers and sellers shouting prices and a chicken or two went about clucking. Dodging the weaving people, I followed a cobbled path to the main gate. I drew suspicious looks from the townspeople, mostly humans who didn't like outsiders, which was stupid because they were one of two of the only ways into Isla Suno without getting on a boat.
Ignoring them I made my way to the gate. A line of people were already formed, besides it being dawn, and the guards were letting people in one or two at a time.
After a brief inspection, I was asked my name and occupation. I my mind suddenly went blank. I didn't think it had mattered.
"I'm Macro" I began, and searched for a job name.
While I thought for an answer, a human in black plate body armour said "he's with us."
"Very well: Occupation, Mercenary, Species, Dragon, age?" He asked
"Twenty one" I replied.
"Ok, mercenaries travel together; please don't try to get in one at a time." He said carrying on to the next in line.
"Thanks." I told the man who saved me.
"You need an occupation, we need more members." He replied, I'm Karl, and then pointed at me, "The colour of your scales matches our paint."
Looking closer to his armour, I saw red strips going vertical on his armour.
"Odd coincidence right?" He said still smiling.
"Huh." Was my reply.
"You don't talk much do you?" He asked.
"Nope, people don't like me being non human. So they don't listen anyway." I replied
"Ah." "Come on let me introduce you to the other members."
He started to lead me to a building.
"We are called the Die krygers van Valour," he began, "Or van Valours for short" He continued. "We are those shunned by others, so we have little to lose and are even more ferocious in a fight. That's why we are hired to do the best paying work. Mainly guard duty." He said with a smile. "We accept all people, consider all to be equal."
"That's a good quality to have." I said as we entered the building.
"And its going to get him killed is what its going to do!" Came a feminine voice.
Looking around I saw a Vixen draped in a cloak and hood land behind us.
"Grrrrr, Watch it Lindsay." Growled Karl.
"Now, now Karl, let's not be hasty." She said with a grin.
"Who's this delicious lizard you've managed to steal?" She asked looking at me.
"He's called Macro." Karl replied still shooting venomous glances.
"I asked him did I not?" Replied the Vixen, shooting Karl an equally evil look.
"He's right." I said sizing up the girl. She looked lithe and able to take on anyone with speed and agility alone. Her fur was the same as a stereotypic fox, red with white highlights on her fore head, chin, hands tail and feet. Overall, she was quite pretty.
"Where are you from I wonder?" She asked.
"Isla Suno." Came my reply.
"Yes, yes but where?" She asked. Her eyes were boring into mine as if to discover my secrets.
"I'd rather not tell." I said, knowing that if I told them I was some Lord's son, I'd be ransomed.
"Hm," That's fine, I'm sure while we work together I'll find out all your secrets said the she-fox with a smirk. She turned with a bellowing cape and jumped back onto the balcony and went out of sight.
"She really scares me sometimes." Karl said,
"Oh really?" I said grinning.
"Oh really is right." He grumbled. We continued walking.
We came to a door with a weird symbol at the end; it was a shield, with a hand-and-a-half-sword running vertical through it. The swords hilt had a diamond at the end of it. Knocking three times, the door swung open. Stepping inside, I heard rasps as swords were drawn. Stood there facing me were three Van Valours various weapons facing me. Karl had taken a step back and faced me as well. A black well built man with no hair took a look at me and said "Well, well. Welcome to the Wolf's Den." And the three Van Valourslunged in attack...
Thank you for comments, this was done on word.
Oh, one more thing! Anyone who guesses the language of: Die krygers van Valour, and what it means, and send me their name and perfered description will be given a hero's title for the rest of the story.
Yours truly
Diamondwolf.
