Brainy boost
#13 of Transformation
Kyle is a teenager in his last year of High school, his grades are awful, he could even lost the year, but he doesn't care. One day, while working at his part time job at a factory, he gets exposed to a substance that was conceived to enhance brain capabilities, which results in him gaining an amazing improvement at school, as well as getting addicted to being smart. Week by week, with each dose he ingests, he becomes smarter, as well as changing into something less human and more reptilian.
Kyle stared at the red encircled F that was written at the right corner of his Math's exam. At this rate, he certainly would not graduate from High School, but it did not mind, continuing his studies was not on his plans. Once the year ended he would go to find a job, he will be 18 years old by then, then, after settling down, he would look for a place to live, far from his stupid father, and then he could consider himself free.
There was a time, perhaps when he was at Primary School, that he thought about doing his best and go to University, or perhaps it was just his mother's dream, Kyle could not remember well. After she died, everything twisted. His father was always out or if at home, drunk. Kyle had to become more practical and independent in order to stay alive, it was then that grades dropped considerably. As years went on it was harder to him to passed every grade. He found out that bullying those weaker than him was a good idea to at least get free from homework, essays and some minor tests, but this last year was not as good as the others.
"At this rate you'll have to repeat the year" the teacher said with the stern voice of him, Kyle just nodded, words did not stay in his mind too much time.
"I see you don't mind" the professor continued "A pity. I've been told that a relative of yours wanted a better future for you".
Kyle threw a deadly glare to the professor, it pissed him off that people talked about his mother. He stood from his seat, picked up the few things he brought and got out from the classroom. There were some more classes he had to attend that day, but he had decided to skipped them. He spent the rest of the day out in the city until it was time to go to his part time job.
Kyle worked at a local fabric from 3:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the warehouse. As he was well built he was one of several employees who moved the boxes from one place to another. Sometimes he even carried them to other departments of the fabric, as it also possessed a research department.
That day he had to carry one of such products, this time to a section that was, to some extent, recently built, which meant he barely knew it. One of the things he noticed was that wall had some pipes that went from one section, where some chemical was being produced, to another where the new labs were placed. On the contrary to the rest of the installations, this area was completely immaculate. During all his trip to the labs, Kyle did not see a single spot or dirt, plus temperature was as cool as a spring morning.
Kyle pushed the luggage through those empty and immaculate corridors full of cameras and no human soul, only his own shadow was his companion. Left, right, left, keep straight ahead... Even though this was his first time and his mediocre performance at school, Kyle had a good memory to remember indications, plus an excellent sense of direction. He was so focused on arriving at the destination that he did not noticed one of the pipes was broken. The gas it expelled was colorless as well as odorless, which did not help either. So he spent one minute of his travel breathing the gas that was escaping.
He went home after finishing his shift. He did not feel sick during the entire weekend, nor he thought anything bad happened to him, for no major changes occurred on his body. However, inside his brain, things were different: the number of synapsis expanded exponentially, new neurons were born, entire regions activated and connected to others.
These changes, however were not noticed until Kyle return to school on Monday. His first class was Math, the one he hated most. Kyle sat at the end of the classroom as usual, so he could have complete freedom to do whatever he wanted instead of paying attention to the class. He grabbed his phone and played some games in it, while the teacher explained something about integrals.
"So, what could we do with integrals, what is their purpose?" the professor asked, the question remained hanging in the air for a while.
"We could know the area under a curve, for example..." Kyle did not continue because he covered his own mouth. Everyone in the room was as surprised as he was, especially the teacher.
"That's correct" the professor said after having recovered to some extent from the astonishment. "Well, who dares to solve this equation?" He wrote an equation on the board and waited for a student to raise their hand. Once again, it was Kyle.
Kyle moved to the board, looked at the equation written on it, asked for a chalk and started to solve the problem. In less than a minute he was done. The teacher inspected it and nodded to confirm Kyle was right. The student then went back to his seat.
Similar situations occurred during the rest of the day: every teacher he had was as amazed as the Math's one. When he got back home, he opened his notebooks and solved every homework he had. For some reason his brain was eager of knowledge and challenges. After doing the school work he went to internet, not to waist his time in what he usually did (games, social media, spicy sites) but to look for puzzles and riddles.
The rest of the week was as that day: surprising every professor he had and miraculously becoming one of the best students of each class. During his free time, he spent it at the school library, reading whatever book he had at hand, absorbing every piece of information they possessed.
Friday arrived and Kyle went to his part time job at the fabric. It would had been a normal day, had it not be by the rumors he heard. It looked like last week, during his turn, a leak of an experimental compound was detected. People was scared at first, but it seemed nobody was affected by it.
"What was that substance?" Kyle asked one of his colleagues at the lock room.
"I'm not sure" he answered while he put his clothes inside the lock "I've heard it was some kind of stimulant for the brain".
It was that. Kyle thought. I was exposed to that thing and that's what caused me these changes.
That night he had to carry supplies to the same labs he went last night, so. After delivering them, he decided to explored the installations. He managed to found the pipe that got broken that night (the material was different in that section) so he followed it until he was at the place where the substance was being elaborated. It was almost midnight, soon the shift would occur, so there were not many people in the area. He took that chance to steel what it looked like some vials of the substance.
Back at home, he drank one and went to sleep. Dream did not take too long to come, while he was sleeping, changes inside the brain started once again, but more intense. Cellular division exploded, new neurons fought for space within the skull that was too small to contain the growing brain, articulations had to break in order to do so. The increase was minimal but it was evident if watched carefully.
His appetite for knowledge and intellectual challenges increased the next week. Kyle was avid, what teachers taught him at the classroom did not satisfy him. Homework was usually done in a ridiculously short period of time. He bought a Rubik cube and learned it to solve it immediately at a high speed. It wasn't until he was transferred to a special class made for students with abilities higher than average that he could have some peace. Exercises were more challenging, yet he managed to adapt quickly.
Kyle not only used his new acquired intelligence for fun, but also as an income. As he was practically one of the smartest in the school, he started to cover for doing people's homework. it did not take too much of his time, plus, his brain was always working, something he was beginning to enjoy. The harder the challenge, the better he felt.
Some of the bad habits he used to have, such as smoking, drinking or social media began to fade away. The first two of them ended up affecting his performance, about the last, he just felt that people he used to talk were mediocre and the information he got was tasteless and unimportant. However, he noticed his appetite for sweet food sharply increased, it was logical, the brain only worked with glucose and he was using it a lot, so the beast most be fed.
That Friday he went back to the tanks were the chemical was being elaborated and took another sample of it, but also looked for information: what it was and how it was made. Sadly, he did not find anything, maybe it was kept under several layers of cybernetic security, a hacker would be needed to complete that task, but Kyle knew none, yet this did not depress him. He was one of the smartest students of his school and with this dose he would be even smarter. It was highly probable that he could learn some programming during the weeks to come.
Skull melted so the brain grew larger, the amount of brain grooves increased as well. The encephalon was more alike to dolphins than humans. To resist the new weight, muscles of the neck, back and shoulders strengthened as well. Cranial circumference was so large that one could noticed at sight.
Kyle looked for books, blogs and video tutorials to learn as much programming as possible. School work, as well as his new business, did not represent a problem at that moment. He was now the smartest guy at school, probably in the country, if not the world itself. Exercises were solved in seconds, only having to wait for his hand, which was slower than his mind, to write the results.
It took him three weeks to feel confident enough to test if he could hack the security system of the labs. He knew it wouldn't be easy, even with all he had learned so far. Programming was tricky, plus his research about the fabric was less than enough for his taste.
That Friday he went to work with his laptop and, after his shift, instead of going back home, he remained at the fabric, hidden from everyone, but with access to the local net. He managed to enter to one of the servers and from there he began his attack. Hundreds of lines of code and information were written on his screen. Kyle looked carefully in every corner of the cyberspace of the fabric, he was searching for the traps and weak points of the firewall, once he found them, he began his attack. It was subtle, to leave as few traces as possible, one mistake and he would be done. Once he finally entered the "fortress" he started to search the information he was looking for. It took some minutes, much lesser than what it took to break the layers of security. Once he found it, he made a copy in his computer, and left everything as it was, then going back home.
His head was bigger the Saturday morning (he had taken another dose the previous night too). Kyle was looking more like an alien than a normal person, even his usually drunk father noticed it, yet he did not care. He opened his laptop and checked the documents he had stolen from the factory. Ingredients were not cheap, but he thought that digging in the right places would be enough to get them, he had also had to acquire the lab instruments needed for the task. The money he had saved from his work and what he had earned by doing the homework of people at school was not enough, but he wasn't very far from the goal.
That day he tried expanding his business to other regions: universities. By that time, he was already digging fields that only in universities were taught so he had an idea of what he could do. Of course, he would need some days to actually acquire and be 100% certain on each field. So he spent that Saturday just reading, processing and absorbing knowledge: mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology... his overdeveloped brain absorbed it like a sponge.
By Monday he was ready for opening his business at college. He, of course gave the first few clients a free try. Once his merits were confirmed, rumors did the rest. Day by day requests increased, live at college was agitated and many students would rather enjoy a party than spending an hour to do their duties. He did not attend school that week. Teachers did not complain much, by that time he had proved he had surpassed everyone, yet they sent him the lessons and homework. He also quit his job.
The amount of money he had earned by the end of the month was impressive so Kyle began his movements to acquire what it was needed to recreate the substance. He started by buying the tools, which took him another month, for some were hard to find as well as expensive, and sometimes he had to pay extra to avoid certain difficulties, then he bought the ingredients, which some of them proved to be quite hard as well.
Once he had installed his lab in the basement, he began to prepare the substance. Even though he followed the recipe it took two days of trying and failing to actually creating it, which amount was not sufficient either, yet it was close to the doses he had drunk before. So he drank his first success, as there was still some daylight, he decided to continue with the experiments.
The substance's effects began two hours later; this time Kyle did perceive them. He felt how his skull softened and inflated as the brain pushed away the walls that contained it. Perhaps he did not felt what was happening at a cellular scale within the encephala, but a complete revolution of tissues was occurring: synapsis number exploded, new links appeared every second, neurons quantities also burst. However, not only his head was affected by the substance, but the body too, yet, changes were not that evident as the head. Coxis enlarged a couple of centimeters, tendons appeared between the joints of that last segment of the vertebral cord. Rostrum protruded forward as well, but minimally. Some corneal deposits started to form over the parietal bones as well as under some points between the dermal and epithelial layers of the skin.
Brain activity was intense, Kyle had to looked for more challenging puzzles, equations and problem in order to calm down that energy that over flooded his system. He also investigated and pondered about more efficient methods to produce more of the compound, for he desired extra doses. He also had to look for way of gaining more money, doing homework and essays was not enough, furthermore, what was he going to do about school. At this rate he would certainly lose the year, some weeks ago it did not matter, but now with his new found capabilities, he definitely wanted to go to a university.
Kyle decided he should improve his programming and cybernetic capabilities. Doing that, he could enter bank accounts and steal money, hack government systems and sell top secret information. He could also create viruses for specific tasks and sell them. About his head, he found an extremely rare disease as an alibi.
Next week he went back to school. As it was predicted, every person looked at him with curiosity, yet no one dared to speak allowed about it. That week were the midterm exams, which ended up being extremely easy. Kyle answered them as fast as his hand could right leaving enough time to enjoy a nap until it was time to lend the exams. Special classes did not satisfy him, they were too simple by then, so he used that time to study programming or look for a university that could satisfy his needs.
Back at home, Kyle spent hours on his laptop to review what he had learnt from his personal studies. He had to master as many programming languages as possible to achieve his goals. Luckily, due to his enhanced abilities, what for a normal person would take months, he reduced that time into days. The superhuman had created so far dozens of programs, improved his own computer performance and even hacked some minor sites on the internet. By the end of that month, he had access to some important banks where he diverted minimal amounts of money every day to secret accounts he had created all over the world.
He dared to hack and steal delicate information from governments the next month. It did not mind if it was from his own country, an ally or an enemy, what it mattered was the amount of money he could earn once he sold that information. By that time, he had earned enough money to buy the ingredients to prepare more of the substance, which, by the way, he had improved the preparation method.
This time Kyle could make five vials instead of one. He decided to continue drinking it once a week, so changes were not very drastic. With this dose, however, changes on his body increased: his head did not grow much, instead, it was his height and body mass. His mouth and nose protruded furthermore, resembling a tiny muzzle. His coxis enlarged, creating a miniscule protuberance on his rear. The corneal deposits on his parietal bones and the dermis increased as well, which caused the appearing of a couple of bumps in that region. Nails, on the other hand, turned harder than usual, as well as growing and becoming a little conical.
People started to fear him again. They thought he was one of those who were into body modifications as his appearance was less human and more monstrous, but he did not mind. He continued with his life, had to do some changes in his wardrobe for most of his gear did not longer fit. He continued with his illicit activities and managed to save enough money to finally moving out from father's house. As he would live alone, he bought a little house far from everyone in order to continue his experiments without disturbance.
The second dose triggered further changes into his body. The bumps grew into little horns, the muzzle became larger, while teeth began to sharpen. Skin became dryer and a series of tiny spikes appeared over its surface. A ten centimeter tail grew where the coxis should be. Nails resembled more like claws than proper nails. It also triggered some changes in his behavior: he drank less water and went fewer times to pee. His appetite had increased with each dose, now foods mainly consisted on meat, fat and sugar. Kyle thought it would be due to the continued changes that he had brought about.
Other features began to manifest as well: his smelling and tasting improved, while he had gained to some extent the ability to see warm blood animals in the dark by perceiving their body temperature. It was like having a pair of infrared cameras in his eyes.
Intellectual abilities did not stop to improve as well. It was getting harder to look for interesting things to do. Kyle now relied on calculating new cyphers of ? or prime numbers. He was also exploring the new physical theories, arguing with the most prestigious minds of those fields about those discoveries as well as the new theories he formulated.
By the third those it was certain that he was becoming some kind of reptile. The horns grew larger, as well as his muzzle and tail, which he could now swag freely, and the spikes. Teeth sharpened, while nails turned completely into claws. His skin became darker, corneal scaled covered it with some patches of hair such as the head and the chest. His new found sense, as well as his smell and tasting sharpened.
Kyle considered expanding his activities by investigating new substances that could also mutate people into monsters like him. He could experiment with different abilities and sell the results to those who were willing to buy them. This substance improved brain capabilities, but he could create "potions" that enhanced physical traits or certain senses. He decided to improved his lab (thankfully his bank accounts were more than enough to do so) as well as looking for test subjects (from rats to humans).
He had turned into an anthropomorphic dragon by the forth dose. Horns upon his head measured almost 20cm long and 10cm of width in their base, his tail had grown down to his knees height, some of the spikes on the skin were as big as 5cm. A series of plates appeared over his torso, like those found in crocodiles.
Kyle had acquired a taste for raw meat, so one of the first results of his experiments was a growing enhancer. He had been feeding some rats with it, earning some individuals as big as a Chihuahua of which he used to eat, gulping them while alive. He had also done a simile of the substance he had being drinking, but which effects were lower than usual, so he had created an army of little minions that helped him with lab work as well as servants for the house.
His ideas of going to college were gone, he wouldn't learn much there any way, possibly people would learn more from him with all the discoveries he had achieved so far. He was actually "helping" some researchers with their investigations.
The brainy dragon dropped the empty vial after he had drunk it some seconds before. His long tail covered with scales and spikes swaged powerful in the hall. He touched his shielded belly, he was hungry; every time he changed he became hungry, so he took mental note of eating some Chihuahua-size rats after this... maybe something bigger. He looked at the giant screen before him, where several graphics and data were displayed. He tapped some observations with his deadly claws and then went to the cells where the creatures he had being made were locked. There he found a collection of monstrosities, some were calmed, others, irritated. Some looked like mammals, others, like chimaeras. Some seemed smart, others, not.
"I think I can open the shop" he exclaimed while reveling a smile full of sharp teeth.
