Chapter Two

"Subject one is far more powerful than we thought. Even more powerful than subject two. Where are they?"

"Subject one escaped the custody of the Boston Police, and evaded our men. The doctor was injured and several

men, four cars, and a chopper were destroyed. We lost track of him in the metropolis. Subject two is still missing."

"Dammit" Said the figure, slamming a fist on the desk. "Anything to report on the recovery effort? Any useful data or research?"

"No." The figure in the doorway said, gulping. "But...."

"But what?!" The figure at the desk hissed.

"We searched everywhere. We didn't find the bodies of subjects three through five."

"WHAT?!" The figure stood up, marching toward the man in the doorway. The figure thrust a paw out and grabbed the man by the throat. "FIND. THEM. NOW. AND KILL THEM! We'll start over...."

"Yes sir!" The man gasped.

I drove the stolen car out of Boston, glad I chose a long term parking lot to steal from, as it might take days for the owner to realize their car was gone. The car needed gas, and my' stomach grumbled. I didn't know how long it had been since I last ate, but with the adrenaline gone, my body had a chance to protest.

I pulled into a massive rest stop and up to a gas pump, remembering the gas tank opened on the left side. I got out, opening a wallet i had lifted from a man's pocket. Thankfully, it had plenty of cash, I didn't want to use cards as they were traceable. I pulled out the wallet, and remembering something, used my powers to break the security cameras. I filled up the car, pleased to only spend thirty five of the hundred and twenty dollars i had. After that, i parked, and entered the rest stop, picking a fast food joint for my meal.

About ten minutes later, I sat down with a trey that held two burgers, a large pack of fries, and a massive soda. As I scarfed my food down, I watched the people exit and enter the rest stop. Truckers, families, college students, travelers of all kinds came and went. About ten minutes into my meal, a large, bright red BMW sedan pulled up. The front doors and the back right door opened. A human female, about my age, exited the drivers side. She had short blonde hair, bright blue eyes, and a trim but athletic physique. She wore simple clothes: a pair of faded blue jeans that hugged her legs and hips, a blue tank top, and a pair of navy blue, high top Converse. The Fox that got out of the passenger side had jet black fur. I couldn't tell if it was natural or dyed. She wore similar clothing, but with a slight goth edge. The male fox that got out of the back might have been her twin. He had jet black fur too, but was very muscular for such a lithe frame.

The three entered the building and headed for the coffee shop. The 'twins' were arguing. The male complaining about having to sit in the back. The human just tried not to laugh. They stood in line for a few minutes before purchasing their preferred drinks, and heading to the fast food joint. As I ate, something about them nagged at me. Why were these teenagers traveling by themselves? And how the hell did they get a brand new eighty thousand dollar BMW?

I was snapped out of my thoughts when the three teens sat down at my table, very calmly. I was surprised and slightly alarmed, but some reason I didn't flee or fight. I stared at them and they stared at me.

"Are you just going to stare at us say something you dumb ass?" The black fox said.

"Excuse me? I think its YOU who has some explaining to do." I said, annoyed at this girl.

"James, don't play dumb, we all were supposed to meet here." The male fox said.

"How do you know my name?

"Well, sorta kinda maybe GREW UP TOGETHER." The male fox said, drawing eyes toward the group.

"Quiet!" Hissed the human girl. "James, what is wrong with you? You told us to meet here at this time. We split up after escaping, and once we gathered ourselves, we got here."

"Ummm...okaayyyyyy." I said, glaring at the male fox, before turning to the blonde. "Just who the hell are you?"

"I'm Jenny." The girl said, looking slightly hurt, but also worried. "The twins are Samuel and Samantha."

"Apparently the people who abandoned us thought it was cute to give us matching names." The female fox said dryly.

"Yeah. Probably would have made us wear the same crap too." The boy scowled.

"Focus please." The blonde girl spoke, glaring at the two and looking annoyed for the first time. "James, we're your friends. We grew up together in the facility. We broke out only a week ago. We all split up to make it harder for the Contresse to follow us. Then we hooked up, and came here as planned." she said, her face softening.

"But why can't I remember anything? I don't even remember who I am, why I am here, or anything! I wake up at a park bench, get to the hospital, and before I know it I'm punting cops and suits right and left!" I said, urgently but quiet, so not to attract any attention.

"They found you? How?" Jenny said.

"The Boston police did a facial recognition, thinking to identify me. They thought i was a mugging victim or something. They got a flag, and called the people who posted it. Minutes later I'm getting shot at. I stole a car, and drove here. Not sure why, but i thought it was a place i needed to be, and besides, i was starving."

"Oh boy. So they know we're in the area. We need to get out of here. leave the stolen car here. We'll take ours. They'll find your car sooner or later, and we need to be far away from it. I know just where to go." Jenny said.

"Where? And anyway, how did you get that car? I lost my identity, but I know what that kind of car costs." I said.

"We kinda sorta robbed an armored car. Probably don't realize it. We just popped open the back and levitated it into our car while Samantha made the guards focus on driving and the one in the back on a mysterious stain on his lapel." Jenny said.

"So you guys have powers too?" I asked.

"Oh my god. Are we going to have to give you a whole history less-ouch!" The fox said, rubbing his arm. I smelled singed fur.

"Can it." Jenny growled. "We need hi help, so we'll help him." Samantha just chuckled at her annoyed brother, but quieted down when Jenny glared at her. "Yes, we do have powers. I can control fire, and create it from smaller flames. Thus, I carry a lighter. makes it easier than trying to get it out of other places. Samantha controls the mind in a way. She can muddle it, distract it, or make someone focus on something so much, they forget about the world around them. Samuel, well, he controls electricity, and with that, electronics. His favorite thing is his EMP abilities. If he has enough adrenaline, he can EMP an entire base. Once he got off his restraints that blocked his powers, he ruined the whole base. We got out because they couldn't track us, and the guards couldn't report us or get backup. Of course, their reactor went critical and the base was leveled, along with all the evil Contresse bastards."

"Who are the Contresse?" I asked.

"Short story, our enemies." The female fox said, "long story-"

"Here we go..." Samuel said, earning three glares.

"long story," Samantha repeated, "They are a secretive organization bent on future world domination. Been around hundreds of years. Original, I know. But they are very dangerous. They are everywhere, with massive resources, and agents and sources and spies everywhere. In police, governments, from top to bottom. We don't know much, but we do know where on of their other strongholds are, and we plan on hitting it, and getting intel, see how far they reach, and how to take them down."

"Yes. But first we need more help. We also know of one more lab, where even more subjects are. Adults, are at this one too. We free them, we rally, and we fight back. Cut off the head, then show it to the world, expose them all. Every single one." Jenny said with conviction.

"Great idea, but of what you say is true. Not only they will come after us, but we'll be branded as terrorists by every country and colony Earth has. We don't need to hurt innocent police and soldiers, and the Contresse sound like they can manipulate pretty much everyone. Why send their men at us when they can fling cops, soldiers, and agents at us, the very same who would appose them in their public rise to power? Kill two birds with one stone." I said.

"True. So we operate quietly. Stay below LEO radar. Use guerilla war against the Contresse. Try not involve innocents. Use only defensive measures, disable, not kill. Then, when we gather enough evidence, expose the Contresse." Samuel said, no longer looking surly.

Just then, a highway patrol car rolled up, and two cops got out. They walked inside and stood in line for coffee.

"Lets go, before they spot the stolen car." We stood up, taking any food we had left, along with our drinks, and quickly got into the car. Jenny drove, next to her was Samantha, Samuel and I in the back.

"Nice car. So you bought this with stolen cash?" I asked.

"Yep. And lots of supplies and such." Jenny said.

"The cops won't track the stolen cash?"

"We bought it from a sketchy shop. The tacker is disabled, plates and VIN number changed, and the dealer had no records. If they do, it'll be a dead end. Samantha made him remember us as two rich old ladies, not young women." Jenny said, eyes on the road as she sped down the right left lane.

"Smart. Where are we headed?"

"So many questions." Jenny sorta smirked, and looked at me through the rear view mirror. I caught site of her said expression before she looked away, covering up her hurt expression. "We're headed to a safe house, to meet up with a contact of mine before we free the other subjects."

Samuel stared at me, giving me a look as if i should know what was going on with Jenny.

"What?" I mouthed at him. He shrugged and returned to the DVD playing on the screen in the back of Samantha's headrest.

I sighed. This was way more confusing an complicated then I could ever imagine.

A few hours later we stopped at a regular, average chain hotel, and reserved several rooms with cash, Samantha doing her mind tricks again.

I stepped into my room, and headed straight for the shower. After washing an drying, I got into bed unclothed, not wishing to sleep in my clothes since I had no others. About an hour later, I awoke with a start, my fur on end. A knock was at the door.

"Hello?" I asked.

"Its me, Jenny. Can I come in?"

"Sure." I said, using my powers to open the door, not wishing to leave the covers.

She walked in, wearing her pajamas, consisting of short, tight, pink shorts, and an equally tight, and revealing tank top of the same color. I gulped lightly, only just now realizing how attractive, and extremely hot she was. Her short blonde hair, her gorgeous face, her flawless white alabaster skin, her hourglass figure, skinny, toned, but curvy. I fought to think about other things.

"What do you need?" I asked.

"Just wanted to talk, and answer any questions you had, you know, help you feel better." She said, sitting on the edge of my bed.

"I'm okay. Just tired, nervous, and stuff." I said, trying not to stare at her breasts i was getting a view of at this angle.

"Yeah, your paws are trembling, and you look tense." She said, as she took my black paw in her flawless hand, and squeezed it. "I can't imagine what its like for you. Not knowing who you are, or who your friends are, who you cant trust and not."

She looked down, and put her hand on top of my left paw, grasping it comfortingly in both her hands. She looked back up at me, and a tear was in her eye. I looked at her, slightly shocked, but very worried.

"What? What is it?" I asked desperately.

"Its nothing. I'm just so worried, and scared. We all are. We've been controlled, prodded, poked, probed, zapped, whatever, and we only just got out. I feel like they're breathing down my neck. I can't sleep, I can't concentrate. I fear the dark."

"Why do you fear the dark?" I asked. "Its not like they're hiding in the closet." Apparently thet was the wrong thing to say. She stood up, tears down her face, looking angry.

"You don't get it! You may be suffering from memory loss, and that sucks, i can't imagine it. But you don't understand what I went through. My cell was always pitch black, and humid. They kept me away from any source of fire. Light bulbs, everything. They use luminescent liquid to light the labs I was studied, fearing I might break a bulb and harness that tiny spark. They controlled me with darkness. I was blindfolded, kept in pitch black, they crept around me, whispering, prodding me. Keeping me in horrid humidity so no spark went off. Kept heavily chemical treated clothes on me, static free. As if I controlled electricity, as I taking away bulbs and sparks would prevent me from using my powers. I don't control electricity, an I told them that. They just liked keeping me afraid. I can't sleep at night, I wake up hearing their whispers, their talking, the light hum of unseen machinery, not knowing what might grab me, poke me, inject me. You forgot what they did to you, you're not tormented in your dreams like I, Samuel, or Samantha are." She seethed. I looked at her dumbstruck.

"I'm sorry, I - I don't... I - I'm sorry." Was all i could manage. She stared, then flung herself at me, and landed on top of me, hugging me and weeping.

"I'm sorry! Its not your fault. You broke us out of there, you helped us out, and it cost you your memory, your identity, and here I am telling a sob story, screaming at you." She said, slightly nasally, as she was stuffed up from crying. My eyes watered a bit as I replied.

"Ssshhhh. Its okay. You don't need to blame yourself. You can vent. Maybe its better I don't remember, I can listen, an not go back into my own memories of that horrid sounding place. I can listen, and be here for you, and Samuel, and Samantha." I said.

"I'm just so tired." She said, no longer crying, just breathing tiredly, and lightly yawning. "I haven't slept, I can't sleep in the dark, and my dreams are horrible."

"Well, sleep with the light on, and if you need someone to talk to, i'm here." I said, still hugging her. "Jenny?" I looked down, her cheek rested on my furry chest, fast asleep. I shrugged, and keeping the light on, I laid back down with Jenny sleeping on my chest, her head rising and falling with my breathing. I soon too fell to the unwavering force of sleep, a deep, deep sleep.
