Ch. 4 Spiritomb Farm

When morning came, the sun shining into the hollow to wake its inhabitants for a new day, the human found himself pressed between the two Pokémon as they continued to doze next to one another.

As for Electrike, he and Grookey were up with the sun and playing around. Poochyena, however, was snoring away and it made the two stop. "I thought he'd be up with us," said Grookey. Electrike smirked. "This is a job for an electric type," he said, "Watch this." He opened his mouth and a spark of electricity shot out and shocked Poochyena on the rear making him jump.

The Bite Pokémon yelped as he jumped awake, looking around blearily. When he saw Electrike and Grookey looking at him -- the former laughing just as boisterously as Raikou, the latter giggling quietly -- he rolled his eyes and huffed. "Har har, very funny, guys..." Then he smirked as well. "You know what's even funnier, though...?"

"What?" Electrike cocked his head.

"This!" With a playful howl, Poochyena leapt up and pounced on Electrike, the pair rolling around on the floor laughing and play-fighting with one another.

Justin chuckled to himself. "Yep, I think he'll fit in just fine," he thought, "Now, what do we do about breakfast?"

Raikou, who had stirred at the commotion, let out a chuckle. "We've got an entire stash of berries, should be enough for all six of us to polish off together."

"Great," said Justin and then turned to Electrike and then looked back at Raikou nodding his head.

Raikou looked to Electrike as well; the younger Pokémon was completely absorbed in playing around with his new friends. The Thunder Pokémon chuckled, then shifted and stood up to pad a little bit deeper into the hollow.

Suicune, meanwhile, stirred at his brother's absence. He yawned and blinked his eyes open, looking around and then nuzzling Justin. "Mm... Good morning..."

"Morning, love," said Justin kissing Suicune's lips, "Sleep well?"

"I always do with you by my side." Suicune smiled, gently nuzzling Justin. "And, well... I must admit that I'm really glad we were able to find Raikou. I feel that I owe it to you for that."

"Well, how about we start by joining the others for breakfast?" asked Justin smiling.

"That sounds wonderful to me." Suicune nodded and started getting up; just in time, too, as Raikou return with a large, woven mat of grass piled high with berries of all kinds.

"Alright, tykes, enough with the horseplay!" He grinned, looking to Poochyena, Electrike, and Grookey. "Come and get some morning grub so you can start the day right!"

"'Kay, dad!" Electrike hopped up and padded over, quickly followed by Poochyena, who began salivating at the sight of the meal laid out.

"Um..." Grookey shifted from foot to foot, peeking shyly up at Raikou. "Are there any, um, Mago berries in there...?"

Raikou smiled, nodded, and pushed a few berries on the pile aside to show a good collection of the pinkish, crescent-shaped berries piled up. "But of course, kiddo! Have at 'em!"

"Mmm... Got any human friendly berries or fruits?" asked Justin, "I've never seen these before."

"Oh yeah, no worries about that." Raikou nodded. "There's actually an entire tangle of bushes just a bit away from here, with any kind of berry you could want."

"Yeah!" Electrike nodded. "Dad says he think it used to be a berry farm that got abandoned or something."

"Abandoned?" asked Justin, "Why was it abandoned?"

Raikou shrugged. "It was that way by the time I made my home here. There wasn't any kind of human habitation, so I don't know if whoever was in charge of it just thought it wasn't worth the trouble, or if something happened to them, or what."

"Hmmm..." thought Justin, "Well, since we're in no hurry to get to anywhere, why don't we check it out?"

Another shrug from Raikou. "Alright. I have been curious about the place for a while, to be honest. Would be something interesting to do before we end up leaving."

"Wait, we're leaving?" Electrike looked up from his meal to his father. "Are we gonna go traveling with Justin and Suicune, like you used to, dad?"

Raikou nodded with a grin. "That's right, kiddo."

"And there's one other thing," said Justin kneeling down as he held up a Pokéball, "You can be part of the team and be part of our family and help your powers develop more and hone in on your skills or you can remain free to travel wherever you like. Either way, the choice is yours and I don't want to separate anyone from anybody against their will," said Justin as he looked to Raikou who smiled at the human understanding that he might need help explaining to Electrike.

He moved in close to sit on his haunches beside Electrike. "See, kiddo, a lot of times humans called trainers catch Pokémon in order to train them for battle. Some of them just care about that, others keep Pokémon as their partners and companions."

"Yeah, like Justin!" Poochyena chimed in, munching on a mouthful of berries.

"He's really, really nice." Grookey smiled shyly while nibbling on a berry of his own. "And traveling together with him and Suicune is really fun."

"Either way, we're gonna be traveling with them. It's just a matter of whether you wanna try out battling with him as your trainer."

Electrike furrowed his brow, thinking long and hard about it. "I... I want to get stronger, so Pokémon like that Golem yesterday won't be able to bully me. And so I can help people who're being bullied like Justin and Suicune helped me."

"So... Do you want to join?" asked Justin as he set the ball on the ground to allow Electrike to make the decision himself and allow it to catch him.

Electrike nodded, smiled, and set his paw on top of the ball. "Yeah, I wanna join you!"

"Aw yeah, this is gonna be awesome!" Poochyena barked in celebration, tail wagging. Grookey's smile widened as he gave Electrike a nod.

Electrike pushed the button as he was sucked into the ball. It twitched and rolled until it turned green. "Alright!" cheered Justin, "Electrike has joined the family! Come on out!" He summoned Electrike and knelt down with open arms. "Welcome to the family," he said smiling.

Electrike barked with joy, leaping up into Justin's arms and licking his face. "Does this mean we're all family now?" He looked from Justin and Suicune to Raikou.

Suicune chuckled. "Well, Raikou and I are already brothers, so... I suppose it does indeed."

"A family..." Poochyena looked a little pensive at that, but his tail continued to wag furiously behind him. Grookey nodded again.

Justin hugged Electrike once more and then held an extra arm out for Grookey and Poochyena to join in... Which they did knocking the young man over and making him giggle as they hugged and licked him all over.

Raikou and Suicune watched, a warm smile on the latter's face while the former laughed heartily at the sight. From time to time they would glance at one another, their own familial bond being rekindled at long last after so much time spent apart.

Justin finally sat up to breathe and then after breakfast, they followed Raikou to the farm he mentioned.

Indeed, it was hard to see the exact border, but soon the plain gave way to a large, overgrown tangle of berry bushes. Raikou led the way forward, Electrike staying at his father's heel.

“There's something that might've been a farmhouse over that way, but it's overgrown right now." The Thunder Pokémon nodded towards a thicker part of the overgrowth. "And honestly, there hasn't been any need for me or the tyke to head that way before, but if you'd like to check it out..."

"Well, it wouldn't hurt to see," said Justin but just as he walked closer, a fog started to roll in and a cold wind blew, "Uh... Suicune? Was... Was that you blowing?"

Suicune moved in next to Justin, looking around. "No, it wasn't me. I think I can feel... something."

"Uh, guys...?" Poochyena was staring into the thicket, his hackles raised. "I think I saw something moving over there..."

But then there was a loud groan followed by a cackle as a large, purple head with green eyes and bright green lights surrounding it appeared. "What... Is that?" stammered Justin feeling scared making Grookey cry out in terror and hide back in his Pokéball.

"YOU... TRESPASS... ON... CURSED... GROUND...!" Many voices all speaking at once sounded out, shrieking and wailing and growling at the group as Raikou and Suicune moved to shield the others. "LEAVE...!"

"Stay behind me, kids..." Raikou glared at the apparition. "Didn't think there was a Spiritomb around these parts...!"

"A-and what're you gonna do if we don't, ugly?" Poochyena growled at the Spiritomb, even as his legs trembled and his tail tucked downward.

"CURSED...! YOU... WILL... BE... CURSED...!"

Justin grabbed Poochyena in his arms and picked up Electrike. "Quick! Let's get out of here!" cried Justin as he made a dash down the road.

Suicune, in turn, rushed up behind Justin and grabbed the human in his jaws, flipping him up into the air to catch the human on his back. The Spiritomb rushed after him and Raikou as the pair made their escape with the others, evil laughter in many different voices following at their heels.

Justin landed on Suicune's back and held on while looking back to see Spiritomb was gaining.

However, as soon as the pair of legendary Pokémon passed the border of the berry thicket and into the open field, the Spiritomb ceased chasing them. It lingered at the edge for a while, glaring at the group with malicious eyes, and then dissipated into a green fog which in turn faded away.

"Well now." Raikou looked from Justin to his brother. "I can't say that's ever happened before."

"Well, perhaps," said Justin when he looked to the far side, "Hey! There's a small village over there. Maybe they can tell us more about what's going on."

Suicune nodded. "I suppose it couldn't hurt, especially if that Spiritomb insists on guarding that 'cursed ground'..."

"Barely a new day and already have this kind of excitement. Now I wish you'd stopped by long ago, brother." Raikou chuckled as he moved to follow Justin and Suicune. The group made their way towards the village, Raikou and Suicune padding along side-by-side as Justin stayed on the latter's back.

"Maybe you should stay hidden, Raikou," said Justin, "The last thing we need is a bunch of trainers trying to catch you." Electrike however was dismayed. "Must you go?" he asked giving a whimper.

"Hey, I'll still be around, kiddo." Raikou grinned and moved in to nuzzle Electrike reassuringly. Just gonna... go undercover for a bit while you guys gather information."

"Really?" Electrike sniffled, and Raikou nodded.

"Yeah! This is a super important mission, son. I can't be there, so I'm counting on you, Justin, and the others. Alright?"

Electrike considered that for a moment, then nodded with a determined look on his face. "Alright! I'll make you proud, dad!"

"I'm sure you will, kiddo." Railou nodded, then looked to Suicune and Justin to tip them a wink.

"Come on," said Justin as they arrived at the small town and noticed the streets were empty. "Geez," said the young man, "There's not a living thing in sight." They kept walking until they found a small Pokémon Center where they found Nurse Joy and a Chansey behind the front desk. "Hello," said Justin, "We just came in out of town and we passed by a berry farm earlier and-"

"You were at the haunted farm?" gasped Nurse Joy and looked around before whispering, "Quick! Come into the cafeteria and we can talk."

Suicune glanced to Justin, but the pair did indeed follow Nurse Joy into the cafeteria while Chansey took over watching the front.

Once they were settled in, Nurse Joy looked to Justin. "If you were there, then you probably saw what's haunting it, right? That terrible Spiritomb..."

"Yeah, when did it first show up anyway?" asked Justin. "About 6 months ago," said Nurse Joy, "You see, it used to be another branch of the Pokémon Center as well as a storehouse for the whole village. But when the village founders began construction, they accidentally unleashed a horrible Ghost Pokémon that wreaked havoc and drove the people away. Finally, there was a young trainer who drove it away back to where it came and had the stone base buried away where it would never be disturbed again. That is until the harvest season came around 6 months ago and its ghost came back scaring everyone out of the farm... And we were all forced to live here and become dependent on trading goods alone. But with all the money almost out, I'm afraid the whole village might starve and there are so many sick Pokémon that won't be able to recover without functional medical equipment."

"So that's why the whole area looks deserted," said Justin and looked to Suicune, "Sounds like we have a mystery on our hands."

Suicune nodded. "I suppose if a trainer managed to seal away that Spiritomb once, then another can do so again." He gave Justin a knowing half-smile. "And I suppose leaving these people to their predicament would be out of the question, yes?"

"Many have tried to catch the Spiritomb but it's much more powerful this time. None of their attacks work," said Nurse Joy.

Suicune's brow furrowed. "Justin, could you ask her a bit more about that harvest season when the Spiritomb returned?"

"Could you tell us more about what happened during the harvest?" asked Justin. "Well, there was word that some Pokémon hunters were in the area. Officer Jenny was making sure the village was on high alert, and that's when the Spiritomb showed up," she said. Justin hummed in thought. "Hmmm... I want to have another look at that farm," he said with his brows furrowing.

"That may be a good idea, yes." Suicune nodded in agreement.

"Be careful." Nurse Joy bit her lip, a concerned look on her face. "Some of those trainers that tried to catch that Spiritomb, they... they and their Pokémon were very badly hurt."

"Thanks for the warning," said Justin, "And don't worry. We'll find some way to help you and the villagers." With that, they left with a very reluctant Grookey who was called out of his ball. "You can open your eyes now, Grookey," said Justin.

Grookey whimpered, peeking through his fingers and looking around. When he saw that they were nowhere near the farm or its spectral inhabitant, he let out a sigh of relief. "G-good, we're far away from that... that... n-n-nightmare..."

"Well, that's what I wanted to tell you all," said Justin, "We're all going back there. There's something not quite right about that place and we're going to solve this mystery and save this town."

"O-oh..." Another whimper from the grass monkey.

Electrike gave him a reassuring grin. "Hey, don't worry. If we all stay together, we can handle that mean old ghost. Right, Poocheyena?"

"Yeah!" Poochyena barked and nodded. "You two just leave him to me, I'll bite that jerk right in his noncorporeal-"

“But," Suicune said, looking to the three younger Pokémon in turn. "...we'll need to be careful. If there is something more dangerous going on, then we'll need to be sure that we can handle it."

"And I'm starting to think that wasn't a real Spiritomb," said Justin as they started on their way back, "Sure, I've heard of powerful Pokémon, but even legendary types have their limits... Uh, no offense, Suicune."

Suicune shrugged. "Though some of us are stronger than others, we do indeed have our limits. No offense taken, love."

"H-he looked pretty r-r-real to me..." Grookey gulped.

"Either way, another look is very much warranted." Suicune nodded. "We'll meet up with Raikou and head over. The area is large, and we may need to split up; if that is necessary, then we'll need to stay in groups of at least two."

"In that case, Raikou can lead one group while Suicune and I look in another," said Justin, "Grookey, you're with Electrike and Raikou. Poochyena, you're with me and Suicune."

"Sounds good to me!" Electrike barked, his tail wagging. "Don't worry, Grookey, me and dad'll keep that mean old ghost away from you."

"Great, I get stuck with the lovestarleys." Poochyena made a show of looking ill.

"Excuse me?" asked Justin crossing his arms, "I'll throw in a whole basket of Oran berries."

Poochyena's ears perked up at that. "...So, when're we leaving?"

Justin smirked as he winked at Suicune.

Soon, they all returned to farm. It was late at night and all was quiet. "Maybe we should check out the farm house," said Justin to Suicune as they cautiously snuck their way up to the building. When they got closer, they could see lights on in the house. "A light on inside an abandoned building?" thought Justin humming in thought silently.

"Here, get on my back." Suicune nudged Justin's side with his snout. "I'm lighter on my paws, so we should be able to get close without whoever's in there hearing."

"Yeah, you two have fun with that." Poochyena huffed. "I'll check things out!" Before either Justin or Suicune could stop the little pup, he'd darted forward and wriggled through a gap in the siding of the house.

But what he found inside was not what he hoped to see. Standing in front of him was a man dressed in torn, filthy clothing and a pitchfork in hand. He looked like a farmer but his skin looked sunken and dried up. His eyes were glowing red and his teeth were razor sharp and foaming. He let out a demonic roar as he tried to pin Poochyena down with his pitchfork, which at once lit up with electricity!

"AHHH, HELP ME! I'M TOO YOUNG TO FRY!" Poochyena yelped as he scrabbled away from the farmer.

The farmer missed but then picked up his tool and was about to fire again when Justin burst in and picked up his friend. "Run for it!" yelled the young man.

The pair indeed ran for it, Suicune grabbing Justin and darting away as the farmer swung again.

The demon farmer yelled out to them in the same voice as the Spiritomb as before, “Now you are cursed! And you will never leave here ever again!"

"All this talk of curses over a berry field...?" Suicune huffed as he brought Justin and Poochyena to safety, the trio a good distance away from the farmhouse out in the overgrown field.

But then, the Spiritomb from before appeared before them and he looked bigger and meaner than before. "Any ideas?" asked Poochyena. "Just one," said Justin nervously, "RUN!"

"FOOLS! YOU WILL BE CURSED!" The spiritomb gave chase as the trio continued to run, darting through the overgrown paths between the berry bushes. Just as Suicune thought they'd lost it and turned a corner, he scrabbled to a halt; the farmer was blocking the way, electrified pitchfork held up high.

"Quick! Into the barn!" yelled Justin as they all made a mad dash to the building shutting the door behind them. That's when they heard a rattling sound and a clank. "Oh no!" gasped the boy as he tried to open the door, "We're locked in!"

Suicune looked around, trying to find anywhere that he could break out, or perhaps Justin and Poochyena could squeeze out of.

"Hey, look at this!" called Justin waving over to them, "Look what I found." He pulled out what appeared to be a fruit crate. "So? It's just a wooden box," said Poochyena. "With a metal cage inside?" asked Justin as he opened the side to reveal a cage disguised as a crate of berries.

Suicune's brow furrowed. "That's... concerning." He took another look around, humming in thought. "Well, you did say you wanted to look around for clues. If there's something like that here, there may be more hints to what's actually going on somewhere around here."

"And I think I'm beginning to make sense of what's going on here," said Justin as he heard a shriek from outside, "That sounded like Grookey!"

Outside, Grookey was indeed running in terror from the spritomb, Electrike hot on his heels. Raikou was doing his best to stay between the pair and the cackling pursuer, sending the occasional attack spiritomb's way. "Why isn't anything working...?!" He snarled in frustration as yet another Thunder attack passed right through the swirling mass.

Suddenly, the Spiritomb lunged at Electrike and swallowed him before cackling evilly.

Inside the barn, Justin heard a shuffle and clank. He looked behind him. "I think that came from the back wall," he whispered to Suicune and Poochyena.

"Be cautious." Suicune nodded to the other two, and then led the way over towards where Justin' had heard the noise. Suddenly, Poochyena's ears perked up.

"Hey, do you hear that? That sounds like..." His brow furrowed. "...Electrike...?"

"There has to be a secret panel somewhere," said Justin and looked over a lantern, "Hand me that lantern." But as Poochyena grabbed the lantern, it tilted and then the wall spun around trapping Justin on the other side. "Put the lantern back!" called Justin.

Poochyena, who had yelped in surprise as the wall spun around, did as Justin asked; he gave the lantern another tug.

The wall spun around and Justin was flung back to their side and sent flying into Suicune. "Somebody get that guy's license," groaned Justin as he sat up and looked to his lover, "Are you okay?"

"I should be the one asking you that." Suicune licked Justin's cheek as he moved to help the human steady himself. "What was that?"

"I don't know, but you wouldn't believe what I found on the other side," said Justin as he walked over to the lantern and tilted it and then put it down before it went full swing. They walked inside to find several Pokémon inside crate cages. "I think our Spiritomb is nothing more than a fake," said Justin.

A few of the Pokémon in the cages cowered away from the sight of Justin, but began to grow curious when they noticed Suicune and Poochyena following in after him. The trio heard a bark from a cage near the back, and then Electrike's voice. "Justin! Poochy! Mr. Suicune! Over here!"

"Electrike?" gasped Justin as he ran over to a berry cart marked "Liechi Berry". "What happened to you?" asked Justin as he removed the crate lid.

As soon as he was freed, Electrike leapt into the human's arms. "Dad, Grookey, and I were running away from that Spiritomb guy, and he caught me. Swallowed me right up, but instead of his belly or whatever he has, I ended up in here."

"This case is definitely making sense now," said Justin, "I think it's time we try to trap that Demon Farmer first."

Suicune nodded. "Indeed. But first... We need to find a way out of here."

"I have an idea," said Justin as he had Poochyena use bite on all of the cages releasing the others.

One by one, the other Pokémon were freed. For a while, some of them looked close to panicking, but Suicune's presence seemed to calm and soothe them.

"Now, maybe we can dig a hole to get the other Pokémon out. Then they can open the door from the outside," said Justin.

"I think I saw somewhere near the wall over there where we can dig." Poochyena looked over to one corner of the barn. "If a bunch of us do it, we should be able to make a way out for enough of us to open the door, yeah."

"Alright guys, use dig!" said Justin as Poochyena barked to the others to start digging near the wall.

Together, the Pokémon who were capable of it began to dig, Poochyena joining in with them in earnest. They were eventually able to make a hole big enough for a few of the smaller Pokémon to wriggle out under the wall; the bite Pokémon among them, of course. They snuck around to the front of the barn, keeping an eye out for either the demon farmer or the spiritomb, and managed to get the door open.

They came out and Justin hugged Poochyena. "Way to go, buddy," he said rubbing his head when they all heard loud cackling.

The farmer had reappeared, electrified pitchfork raised high. When he saw that the other Pokémon had been freed, his cackling became a howl of fury.

Poochyena answered that howl with a snarl, jumping out of Justin's arms and moving to growl at the farmer. "You stay back!"

"I don't think so, buster," said Justin, "Poochyena, use bite!"

Poochyena lunged forward, chomping down on the farmer's on. The farmer howled in pain, shaking the little Pokémon around, but Poochyena refused to let go.

"Come on!" called Justin as he ran forward and tackled the farmer knocking the pitchfork away. Then several grass types used vine whip to hold him down. Just then Poochyena started glowing.

"W-wha...?" Poochyena looked down at himself, feeling the surge of power. The satisfaction of helping his friend and partner. The want to continue helping and protecting Justin. He howled as he burst into light.

POOCHEYENA evolved into MIGHTYENA!

Justin gasped and knelt down for Mightyena to approach. "I can't believe you evolved so quickly," he said giving the Bite Pokémon a hug, "But I'm sure you're still the same, lovable Poochyena as before."

"Heh, you know it! Just bigger and better!" Mightyena's tail wagged as he pressed into the hug. "Now, what should we do with this guy?" He glared around the human at the farmer, who was still struggling against the vines which held him down.

It was then they heard another cackling sound and looked behind them to find Spiritomb looming over them.

Mightyena moved to stand in front of Justin, growling at the cackling spirit. But then, all of them were distracted by a roar from behind.

Raikou was dashing over, Electrike and grookey clinging to his back. "Now, Grookey!" The younger electric Pokémon boosted the grass monkey, allowing him to leap off as the Thunder Pokémon passed by. With a screech -- half-terror, half war cry -- Grookey shot towards the Spiritomb, reaching for where its keystone was.

Passing right through as Spiritomb seemed to waver.

Knocking into something, both him and another Pokémon tumbling to the ground as the Spiritomb vanished.

Then smoke cleared and Justin was shocked. "Is that a Mismagius?" he gasped.

"Ugh..." The Mismagius groaned and shook their head, sitting up. "Anyone get the number of that bus...?" As their eyes opened, they realized that they were surrounded; and still pinned under Grookey, who was clinging onto them tightly with eyes clenched shut in terror. "...Well, crap."

"Grookey, you did it!" said Justin as he picked up his little grass monkey and gave him a hug, "You beat the Spiritomb. I'm so proud of you."

"I-I did...?" He cracked an eye open, looking around. Raikou had moved over to pin the Mismagius down, while Suicune was keeping an eye on the farmer. "I... I guess I did...!" He gave Justin a trembling-lipped smile.

"Good job, Grookey! Knew you had it in ya!" Mightyena jumped up with a wide, wolfish grin.

"P-Poochy...?" The grass monkey stared in awe, while the Mightyena struck a pose. "That's Mighty to you, hehe!"

Justin smiled when he heard a siren and in came Officer Jenny along with a group of officers. "Nurse Joy told us there was some light flashing up here," she said, "Is everything alright?"

"Yes, Officer," said Justin as he moved over to the farmer, "And now, I think it's time we unmask this demon farmer." He yanked on the farmer's face and pulled off a mask to reveal a man with a scowling face. "Trevor the Trapper!" gasped Jenny," He's been on our wanted list for months!"

"Trevor used this location to keep most of his trapped Pokémon secret from prying eyes. But when he heard the town was building a farm here, he thought he could scare everyone off by bringing the legend of the Spiritomb to life using his Mismagius to create an illusion while trapping Pokémon at the same time," said Justin, "Then he would disguise cages as berry crates and ship them to any clients who filled his pockets with money. This journal lists his clients' names and locations."

"And I would've gotten away with it too, if it weren't for this meddling trainer!" snapped Trevor.

"Well, we have you to thank for getting this guy into custody." Officer Jenny nodded to Justin, then bent down to cuff the farmer. "I'll take it from here."

"Thanks, Officer Jenny," said Justin as Nurse Joy came up. "How can we ever thank you?" she said.

"Maybe some dinner?" Mightyena baked, panting. "I'm starving!"

Justin chuckled and asked, "Well, perhaps some food might be in order for everyone if it's not too much trouble." Nurse Joy smiled and nodded.

The other Pokémon cheered in joy, Suicune moving to gather them up and organize them with Electrike's help. And indeed, later on at the Pokémon center, both the rescues and Justin's team enjoyed plenty of food to help recover from their ordeal.
