Sam landed next to Sapphire and nuzzled her.

“How was the trip?" She asked

“My brother and his mate know, and she's pregnant, so today is like the best day ever." Sam smiled. “And to put a cherry on top, I got to see Ben's stupid face when he found out about us."

“You saw him?" Sapphire looked worriedly at him. “And talked to him."

“I think he hung around my building all night, to tell me to back off, but too little to late." Sam smirked.

“I'm sorry about him." Sapphire frowned.

“Don't be, who wouldn't want your beauty? But it's mine now, and I plan to defend it." Sam nuzzled her again.

They walked to the door and jumped back when Michael opened it.

“It's about time you got here, I was watching Sapphire pace back and forth, blushing, for two hours now." He spoke to them. “I can tell your not engaged, but mated, it's blatantly obvious."

They blushed, and nodded, then stepped into the house. They entered the living room and settled down on some couches, Sapphire curled up next to Sam and nuzzled against him. Max was sitting on another couch with a pink dragoness curling up to him in a similar way.

“June! When did you get here?" Sapphire greeted her.

“This morning, I wanted to check in on everything." June replied. “Congrats on the mate."

Max smiled and looked up from a book he was reading. “Finally"

June shot him a dirty look, then turned back to them. “You know what that means, girls night!"

“That will have to be much later." Michael walked into the room. “Both of your aunts are coming, and their mates, and their kids."

Sapphire sighed. “I was hoping we could wait a minute."

“Nope, your aunts already hate me for following your parent's wishes, and they would be so mad if they found out I held this information. Remember when I just didn't tell them you started courting, they tried to send a spy to sit and watch us. Then they promised you to Ben…"

“They what?" Sam exclaimed.

“Sorry, tried to promise her." Michael added.

“You didn't tell me that." He turned to Sapphire.

“I didn't want you to lose your hopes." She replied, nuzzling him.

“Don't worry, I… showed them how not to interfere with her dating life." Michael replied.

“Ben waited at his building overnight, and Sam told him this morning when he returned to pack his things." Sapphire told her father.

“Then be glad he didn't return until morning." Michael replied. “I'll deal with it."

They talked for a while, before there was a bang of the front door opening and a loud chatter of a group of dragons walking through. Sapphire's aunts were twins, and usually did everything together. One of their mates poked his head through the door to the living room and smiled at Michael. He mouthed that he was sorry for something before he turned and noticed Sapphire curled against Sam. His eyes sparked knowingly, and he grabbed somebody else. Another head, the other twin's mate, poked his head through as well and saw them. They shared a look, then smiled and nodded at the young couple, before returning to the hall.

“Where is my darling niece? I want to see if she's been keeping up with her scales." One of her aunts walked into the room and froze at the sight.

“Hi aunty." Sapphire smiled.

“Amy, come see this." She called to her sister.

“What is it Mel, did you find her?" Mel walked into the room and froze.

“And who is this?" Amy turned to Michael, who vanished, then to Max, who also vanished with June.

“Hi, I'm Sam." He greeted them.

They turned and looked at Sapphire.

“He's my mate." She smiled shyly

They gasped, and May nearly fell over.

“How have we never met this young male?" Mel asked.

“You have, but you never paid any attention to him, we were courting for almost three years." Sapphire rolled her eyes.

“And he's suddenly your mate?" Amy cut in.

“As of last night, yes." She blushed.

“Michael never told us you were having your ceremony." Mel replied

“That's because there wasn't one, we did it kind of spontaneous." Sapphire replied, smiling. “The old-fashioned way, so to speak."

Sam blushed and chuckled a little.

“We can still have one, yeah, lets have one anyway, your family would want you to have one." Amy spoke.

They started talking rapidly, pestering the couple with questions. Slowly, Sapphire's confidence vanished and turned to embarrassment, she hid her face behind Sam's neck and curled up tightly against him. Then that embarrassment started to turn to irritation, and Sam just had to step in.

“To me it just sounds like this ceremony is more for you than for us." He spoke “I don't want one, she doesn't want one, so there is no need for one."

“You're already going against an old tradition." Amy snarled “You wish to break it further?"

Michael walked into the room and laughed. “Tradition, not really."

Sam turned to Sapphire. “Do you want one?"

She blushed as all eyes turned to her, hiding under his wing against the embarrassment of the whole situation. She shook her head, and pulled the membrane over her as she set her head down.

“Then it's settled, no ceremony, you can throw a party though." Sam told them.

Mel snorted “What? How would you know what's best for…"

“His mate? You saw her, no ceremony, and they don't have to show up to the party, it's for you anyway." Michael cut in.

They shook their head and walked out of the room, chatting under their breaths. A few younger dragons walked into the room.

“Hey Sapphire, who's this?" A teenage dragoness asked.

She peaked out from under her mate's wing and smiled.

“Hi Jen, this is Sam, my mate." She told them

They gasped and smiled, then talked with Sam for a minute.

“Three years of courting and you managed to keep it a secret from everybody but me and Max." Michael chuckled and shook his head. “What were you doing?"

“She felt a little embarrassed about me." Sam replied.

She poked him with her nose. “Not true I…"

“See, it is true." Sam cut in at her pause.

She snorted, and rolled her eyes.

“That's for asking me why I waited." He whispered to her.

“When did you guys get mated." The same dragoness asked

“Last night." Sapphire answered.

“Then why are they so mad." She replied.

“Because we didn't have a ceremony, and still won't." She told Jen.

Jen smiled and shook her head. Then the young dragons talked with Sam for a while. Eventually the sun fell and Sapphire yawned loudly.

“Come, lets go to bed, but I need you to lead me, because I don't know where it is, and this is the longest I have ever spent in this house." Sam spoked

They both blushed, realizing that they were about to spend the first night in a bed together.

“I really used to like getting out of the house and staying there, but now, I don't feel that anymore, and only one thing has changed." Sapphire replied, smiling over at her mate.

His heart soared when he realized that she was talking about him. She led her to her room and they stepped inside. Sam looked around at the beautifully decorated room, there was some twinkling lights hanging with the curtains. He admired the medals on the walls.

“You've seen my apartment like, a billion times, how is this the first I've seen this?" He asked.

She shrugged “I felt kind of embarrassed."

He kept looking around the room, the bed was flattened and she had some shelves filled with small knickknacks. He smiled at her and she blushed heavily, then he came up and nuzzled her.

“You don't have to be embarrassed about anything, not with me anyway." He whispered.

He felt her huff, and tears formed in her eyes, she laid down on the bed and tapped it with her tailblade. Sam curled around her awkwardly and slowly curled his tail around hers. She gasped at the sensation, and enjoyed the feeling of a warm body curled around her for the first time since she was a hatchling. She sighed, content, and Sam set his head next to hers.

“I love you." He spoke.

“I love you too." Sapphire kissed his cheek.

Sam fell asleep the happiest he has ever felt, all the losses and pain in his life was gone, never to return. He is going to be an uncle, and he has a mate.

A loud bell woke up the couple. Sam jumped up and startled Sapphire, they rushed out into the living room. Michael and Max were quickly putting on armor.

“Hey, I'm going to go check this out, you guys stay here." Michael told them.

“What about me, the city needs me." Sam cut in.

“I know you're a guard, but I swear to all things existing, if you leave this house, I will petrify you both for a thousand years." Michael snarled.

The two dragons walked out of the house. Sapphire sat on the couch and watched her mate pace back and forth. A few hours passed before Michael walked back into the room, he was covered in a strange, dark red, substance. Sam recoiled when he realized it was blood.

“We have a problem." He spoke.

“What is it?" Sapphire asked.

“It's some sort of magical virus, when bitten, a victim abruptly dies and reanimates into a zombie, which then attacks and tries to bite all it can." Michael explained.

June paled. “Here? Now?"

“Yeah, sadly this infection had already taken over the whole labs department." Michael explained.

Sam looked over at him, stunned. “Wait, was it that strange green crystal?"

“Sadly, yes, one of the lab techs mishandled the crystal and was the first to turn." He answered.

Sam looked like he was going to throw up.

“Doesn't matter, we need to go now." Michael turned “Pack your things, it's time to go."

They proceeded to pack as much as they could, then returned to Michael. He had opened a portal and was magically emptying the house through it.

“Wait, what about Cal? I have to go get him." Sam spoke.

Michael sighed. “Alright, armor up and give the rest of your things to Sapphire."

“I'm coming too." She cut in.

“No, I can only protect him, he can't be bitten, but Max and I can." He told her. “The building they used to live in is being surrounded, and I need Sam to convince Cal and Flora to come with us."

Sapphire nodded, and kissed Sam.

“If you die, I will kill you." She mumbled to him, then stepped through the portal. Sam quickly put on his armor as the house finished completely emptied.

“Her family is already through." Michael explained. “I am evacuating everybody as we speak."

They took off and flew towards Sam's old building, as Michael had said it was surrounded with zombies. Michael summoned a sword and crashed into a group of them, slicing all of them into pieces.

“You two go up to the roof, and get them out." He ordered.

Sam nodded and they landed on the roof, they got into the elevator and pushed the button to go to the fifth floor.

“So, you and my sister." He spoke, breaking the silence.

“For a moment I was so happy I thought I would explode."

“I'm glad to hear that, your feelings are true and I'm glad she found a true love." Max nodded.

Sam smiled. “I love her with all of my heart, and I always will."

Max returned the depressed smile. “Lets save your brother and his mate."

The doors opened and they stepped through, the halls were abandoned, and all of the doors were ajar except one. Sam knocked on the door.

“Cal, it's me."

The door opened and Cal peeked through it.

“Oh thank god, I was getting worried they got you." He sighed.

“We need to go, now." Sam told him. “Before they get in the building, is Flora okay."

Cal nodded. “Stressed, but okay."

“It was that green crystal we found, someone mishandled it and it caused all this." Sam told him.

“I shattered it, so it won't be a problem anymore." Max cut in.

Cal and Flora walked out of their apartment, they had already packed and were ready to go. They walked into the elevator and it started to rise again.

“You need to stay as far as possible from them, a virus like this can be very dangerous to pregnant females." Max spoke.

Flora looked shocked. “Did he tell you?"

“Michael knew, but he didn't need to tell me, I can tell, my ethereal powers tell me a lot of things." Max replied.

“So, I am pregnant?" Flora asked.

“Yes" Max answered.

Flora and Cal shared a smile, and the doors dinged open again. They walked out and took off, Michael joined them but stayed distant. He snapped his claws and the blood and bits of rotten meat vanished, then he caught up to them. Sam flew over the city, and watched it burn, dragons were flying into crowds and helping wolves evacuate.

“Wolves can't be infected, but they will still be killed by the zombies." Michael told them.

Sam felt tears in his eyes as he watched hordes of zombies flood the streets. They landed back at the house and Michael reopened the portal.

“The city is to be abandoned, maybe the whole dimension." Michael explained.

They nodded and sighed, before stepping through the portal. The walked onto a strange metal platform, in fact, they were surrounded by metal, they must be in a large building. Sapphire was waiting for them, and smiled at Sam when she saw him. A dragon wearing strange armor walked up to them and scanned them with a strange device. She nodded and walked away.

“Were clean." Michael explained. “And also in space."

Sam, Cal and Flora recoiled, but Sapphire seemed calm about it. She ran up and nuzzled Sam, purring and rubbing aggressively.

“This must be Sapphire." Flora smiled weakly “Nice to meet you."

Cal noticed her expression, and looked over at her. “Are you okay?"

“I'm fine, I just need some rest." She yawned. “Is it safe here?"

“We have strict protocols here; the virus will not reach here. You will be given a large home to live in together." Michael explained “Sapphire, her family, and you three."

“What about you?" Sam asked. “Where will you guys be staying?"

“We have our own rooms; they are near yours." Michael explained

They walked over to a strange platform, Michael hit a few buttons and they were teleported to a new location. He then led down a hall filled with homes, and used a key to open one of the doors, the group walked into a living room, Sapphire's aunts and their families were there.

“Thank god, I was worried Michael had forgot about you." Mel spoke.

Michael shot her a dirty look. “She was waiting for her mate to get his brother."

The kids looked scared, they were relived that Sapphire was there, but the experience was still fresh in their minds. Flora shuddered and walked into a random bedroom, and Cal followed. Sam suddenly felt bone tired, and Sapphire noticed he looked the part. She nuzzled him and pushed him into another room, he stumbled a bit before obliging and walking into their new bedroom. He nearly fell over and she helped him take off his armor. When she was done, she laid down on the bed and he fell onto it after her. They woke up many hours later, the room had no windows so they could not tell what time it was. Sapphire yawned and licked Sam's cheek, then nuzzled him as affectionately as she could. He smiled and they kissed for a while, before Sapphire got up. Sam groaned and tried to call her back to him, but she chuckled and stretched.

“Stay here, I'm going to go check on everybody." She told him.

He nodded and groaned, curling up again and falling back asleep. Sapphire looked around and noticed that the living room was empty, she walked out of the house and over to Michael's. He opened the door and smiled at her.

“Hi sweetie, what's up." He looked tired.

“I was going to ask you that." Sapphire replied.

“The city has been abandoned, and all the towns near it, but the hordes are breaking through walls and spreading rapidly." He sighed. “We are going to a hidden city soon, we need to evacuate it before one of those hordes reaches it."

Sapphire nodded and sighed, then walked back home. She quickly returned to the room and back to the bed. Sam moved backwards, calling her to join him. She laid down on the bed and he curled tightly around her.
