Roadhouse Vignette Gaiden: That One Time in San Destro
Sam, the Bull in his search for meaning finds out more than he bargained for, and perhaps, exactly what he wanted.
In what felt like another lifetime, Sam recalled the feeling, The drinking, the fighting, the racing and over and over and over and over. The nights wheeling into one another, miles on top of miles miles, odometer ticking up day after day, hours in the sunshine just trying to see how fast he could make that big number flip over, stupid grin on his face at the mechanical manifestation of his own thanatos. Seeing heartbreaking vista after heartbreaking vista, stopping for gas, and looping back on the long road to get ready for work.
The first time he felt like things started to make sense was on two wheels, the second was when he started hanging around with a club. But two points of contact don't make a stable structure. And that lack of stability bothered him, gnawed at him in ways he couldn't put his finger on. He Smoked, drank, cussed, raced, fought and yet... He had started to simply resign himself to the nature of existence, Until one summer night in San Destro. Tucked away on a winding shitty part of the coastline, there was a bonfire out there, Cooler of beer, drugs, a couple folks with instruments, and grub. All the usual, but more than that, there were new faces, and one in particular among them, A Coyote.
He Rode, that much was evident. the cuff of his left pantleg torn and frayed from the open primary, oil stains on his jeans and flannel shirt, and a stubby screwdriver tied to his beltloop with a length of cord, opposite the chain and wallet. His sunglasses dangling from his shirt, were splattered wit bug-guts and Sam saw his gloves were cracked and worn as he took them off and tucked them into his back pocket. He traded them for a bandana which he tied around his forehead, helping to keep his stiff and greasy hair out of his amber eyes. Before he waved to Sam, and tossed him a beer.
Sam caught it, nodding back with a gruff "thanks".
There was something about the way he moved that struck Sam first. a play in his gait, a subtle sideways motion, the posture of his off-hand as he jabbed a finger into one of the local's chest. And playfully snarked at them. The way he looked Next to his chopper, the firelight making it's pearlescent paint shimmer and shine with oranges and yellows over its surface, and the way he reclined on the queen seat while making a lascivious joke.
Sam looked down to realize that beer he'd been tossed wasn't cold any longer, pop tab untouched. Reaching down to correct this, suddenly he heard a car door slam. and a Shout.
Sam's eyes couldn't find the car, his eyes went to the clif-face, but no tell-tale blues-and-reds played on the surface. That introduced an unknown, and he didn't much care for that.
Sam watched as the The amber eyed one, looked up, and watched as someone wandered into view from a path in the cliff-face, and then the swearing started in earnest.
The interloper started in, "What are you doing? Out here carousing, making a littering this beach yukking it up with these burnouts? do you have even the slightest inkling how angry it makes me to see you like this?"
The Amber eyed one countered: "Nobody invited you, take your shitty Jewelry elsewhere. I have done nothing wrong, I'm sorry that I don't want to answer phones for the rest of my goddamn life. Besides All this kinda shit's fine-" "He waved his arms wide, indicating the party, screwdriver jerked out of his pocket from the force of the gesture. "-when it's you and you money-grubbing poker buddies but the minute I start to work with my hands I'm the disappointment. Fuck outta here!"
The interloper fired back, "You working with your hands is a disappointment but it's the -least- among them. This ends to-night. You've got work in the morning...." He snapped his fingers and Sam saw two figures move in from around the corner on the switchback, big tough looking cats. Slowly moving into position.
The Amber eyed one waved his hand dismissively "You are my -brother- the fuck you think you can order me around for?"
The interlocutor's ears laid back, his snout curled, canines flashing in the firelight as his demeanor began to crack. "I am the head of this family now, and every fucking day you are out here wasting your life is a day our dear mother's heart breaks. She fucking prays for you every goddamn night. I work late, I hold down the fort, Yes I drink on the weekends, and play poker..."
"and chase skirts and feel up waitresses...." The amber eyed one scoffed, crossing his arms.
"I AM A FUCKING ADULT AND I FLIRT. IS THAT A CRIME? BUT I EARN IT. I WORK WITH MY FUCKING HEAD AND MY GODDAMNED EYES AND I EARN IT LATE NIGHTS EVERY NIGHT. WHILE YOU'RE OUT HERE, FUCKING AROUND DOING NOTHING BUT YOU'RE THE ONE SHE CRIES FOR, HER DAUGHTER."
The amber eyed one leapt, ears pinned back, teeth bared, as he lunged, a left-right zig-zag, that the Interloper, admirably managed to half follow even in his nice storebought slacks and loafers, but his sibling had something in mind as he positioned himself, his screwdriver, dragging along behind him through the sand as he juked back and forth, untill with a deft turning motion and a flick of his hips, he called the screwdriver up into his hand, with the cord following behind arcing upward and around drawing a line across the Interloper's neck. The Interloper had only a moment to react, but like his sibling, he was fast, and managed to shove his thumb up along side his neck interrupting the ersatz garrote.
The amber eyed one cranked down on the hold, cinching the line tight. Snarling with bloodcurdling anger. "I AM NOBODY'S DAUGHTER!" Before savagely biting at the Interloper's head, drawing blood with fangs, and kicking the back of his quarry's leg, sending them both to the ground. Before a flash filled the corner of his eye, as he became aware of the flanking Cats' presence, seeing metal glittering in their hands before, the opposite side of his face got hot, way hot, and his amber eyes went wide as a thrown piece of burning firewood flew past him, right into the cat's face, and then, a shower of sparks as He watched Sam, snorting and charging both of the goons as one yowled and tried to put out the burning shirt from the thrown firewood, only for sam to tackle the both of them, and throw them up against the rock wall. Only for one to kick the large bull right in the gut and send him staggering back.
As this happened, the Amber eyed one watched for a moment, grip surreptitiously loosening, and then catching a headbutt right in the snout! Sensing the momentary distraction, The Interloper kicked his way out of the chokehold. rolling free to his right, and and throwing a fistful of sand to cover his escape, heading back up the the pathway, vaulting over the staggering bull, and heading back up the pathway, clutching his head and bleeding.
He screamed from the top of the rock path, "YOU STUPID BITCH, [REDACTED]!" He shouted, as his goons followed him up the trail.
"I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU FOR WHAT YOU'RE DOING TO THIS FAMILY, YOU SELFISH DILETTANTE!"
Sam stood back up, watching as one cat quickly rolled the other back and forth putting them out, one drawing his talon across his throat as he looked at sam, withdrawing to follow their employer. A promise made in motion; Sam replied in kind by snorting and tapped his horntip, then pointed right back at the offending feline, Before the two staggered up the path out of sight, and moments later, the sound of squealing tires.
"Thanks for your help, big guy." The amber eyed one said, looking up at Sam. "Sorry you had to hear all that...."
"Don't worry about it...I didn't hear much anyway i uh...i guess I was kinda...lost in thought right up until you pulled that little stunt with the screwdriver..." The big bull said looking around, awkwardly finding the beer he'd dropped when he started running, "Looks like the uh, others took the cooler with'em..uh..here..." He offered the Can to the Coyote,
"Hah! fuckin' figures. I'd a done the same honestly!"
The Coyote took the beer and laughed, opening it, and letting the resulting spray cover his hand, before putting it to his mouth and taking a few mouthfulls passed the can back to Sam.
"Here, half of this is yours, big guy...but on the condition you...don't tell anyone the name he said."
"What should I use instead?" The bull asked. Taking the beer and looking down at the rim for a second, feeling an uncharacteristic blush crossing his face. Eyes darting back to the Canid, who gently scratched his scruffy beard.
"I'd like it if you'd call me, Julius." He said.
"I'd like to call you..." said Sam, pressing the can to his lips and drinking, the cheap pilsner going down easy, finishing his swallow he surreptitiously licked his lips and tasted the tiniest hint of the coyote on them, and felt his pulse quicken again. "...Julius."
"Thanks Big guy, and how about you?"
"Name's Sam..."
"Sam huh? Good name, straight and to the point~ Rock solid but...doesn't give much away. It fits you, Big guy, it fits ya." He said, chuckling and trying to regain some of his earlier conviviality. He walked over to his chopper and fumbled in the tiny pouch on the front of the forks above his bedroll, as he pulled out a joint.
Sam stared the whole time, his hand clenching the beer can a little tightly as Julius bent over, and came back up, twisting the joint in one hand, and his moustache in the other. with raised eyebrows and a wry grin.
"Fire came to my rescue earlier in the evening, would you be so kind as to help it do so again, Sam?"
"If i'm being honest Julius, before you get into that thing I...uh..I'm...not super...good at this i just...."
"Yeah Sam?"
"The way you moved...back there I.."
Julius raised an eyebrow, "Spit it out there, Great Plains."
At the momentary jab, sam blinked and stood up ramrod strait, and leaned in. heart pounding as he reacted to the challenge in Julius' voice.
"I've got a question that needs answering and I want that answer before it all tastes like weed smoke and i can lie to myself."
"Sam? what are you on about..."
"I've never been with another dude. and...I wanna know..."
Julius grabbed the bull's cheeks and pressed their lips together, tongues jabbing into one anothers mouths, the coyote's paw drifting down to rub at the bull's groin who snorted and blushed and continued the kiss, his long beard brushing up against the coyote's Goatee.
Sam broke the kiss first, and snorted again, stamping a hoof in the sand.
"God....goddammit." He said. "God fucking dammit."
"Woah woah woah, what's the matter Sam I thought you said..."
"Its..its okay... no I...just...goddammit."
"what?"
"It's...better than I expected...." The big bull said.
"It had fuckin' better be, you sat there ogling all this magnificence all damn night." The coyote wiggled his eyebrows as his hands swept up and down his lithe form.
Sam smiled despite himself, and reached into his vest pocket and produced his lighter, and bent down on one knee flicked open the flip top lid of his zippo, and lit the joint held in Julius' teeth.
The smoke curled in the air around them, as Julius puffed, and then passed as sam walked around to lean against Julius' bike alongside him, and felt the coyote's hand slide into his rear pocket, and squeezed him, as he took a long drag on the joint, and there, even before the weed hit him, he realized he felt like he was home for the first time.
