After grabbing a few things he deemed essential; knife, wallet, money, keys, gum. Hell with it he knew he was really just trying to put off facing whatever the hell was going on outside. Standing inside his apartment, he braced himself for whatever might be waiting for him on the other side of his door. Gingerly he reached out and twisted the knob and flung the door open to find... nothing.
"huh" Chad exhaled, slightly relieved as he stepped into the foyer and towards the door to the apartments exterior. Opening the door he now noticed that nothing looked amiss. The sun was shining, birds were chirping, nothing, accept for that, there was NOTHING. No cars driving, no people out enjoying the day. He returned to his apartment and grabbed an aluminum bat from his closet before he re-exited the complex.
Walking the sidewalks of his neighborhood he found no one. "what the fuck is going on here" he mumbled. Turning left on one of the main roads he thought he saw a couple furs running around a corner of a building into an alleyway. He quickened his pace and jogged to the mouth of the alley to find, once again, nothing. Only now, there was no sound, the birds had stopped chirping.
Halfway to his parents house he decided that either this was a bad dream, or a real nightmare. Just as he passed the last house on the block something rustled in its bushes. This startling him sent him jumping into the street and raising the bat in a defensive position, but nothing came at him. Cautiously he stepped toward the bush when a red bird burst from its branches flying straight at him. Toppling backwards the bird flew over him to arc high into the air and flip around and come back. 'what the fuck is going on?!' his mind screamed as he scrambled backwards to where the bat lay.
His hand grasped the bat just as the bird entered his swing radius and he whipped his arm forward, smashing the bird out of the air with a hollow *ptink*. After settling his heart rate he stood up and brushed himself off. Kneeling down to examine the crushed remains of the bird he noticed that this bird had six eyes and teeth.
"Jesus Christ, what the hell is happening?" he said backpedaling from the bird. Spinning on his heel he jogged the rest of the way to his parents house, luckily without any other incident.
Upon arrival everything appeared normal. He thudded heavily up the porch steps to the door where he paused. The door was partially ajar. Raising his bat like a club in one hand he opened the storm door with a loud squeak. 'fuck'. he thrust open the interior door and stepped inside bat at the ready, to find, surprise surprise more nothing.
"Mom? Dad?" he called out as he proceeded through the first floor. Chairs were overturned in the kitchen, the televisions screen was smashed in in the living room, and the banister running up the stairwell was ripped from its mounts and lying on the stairs.
"DAD, MOM, ANYONE HERE?!" he shouted as he ascended the staircase, not wanting to be ambushed by his own family. Reaching the top he found more nothing. Out of the corner of his eye he noticed a piece of paper lying on his parents bedspread and proceeded to pick it up and read it.
'For whoever reads this we have gone with the military. They came through the town last night and rounded up anyone they could roust and evacuated the city. We are being taken to the airport where the military has set up camps on the runways for citizens. Chad if you find this try to meet us there, your mother called you but could not get a hold of you. Be safe, we aren't sure what the hell is going on but whatever they are they're not of this world, but they are killable. I should know I just did. I love you son.
Love,
Dad.'
Chad was now sitting on the edge of his parents bed crying, both from happiness that his parents were safe and deep depression that he was not. After regaining his composure he stood and found he was no longer alone in the house as something crashed downstairs. Quickly he closed the door and slid the chain lock into its bracket. Quietly he snuck across the room to the closet and hoped his father hadn't taken what was hidden there. Inside he found a long slender leather zipped case which contained a 12 gauge shotgun, and under that there was an ammo safe which he promptly emptied and loaded the gun. Now loaded to bear he walked to the door and slid the chain free of its housing and swung the door open.
Downstairs more noise could be heard, scraping of metal and rummaging of paper and debris. Chad silently snuck down the stairs and poked his head around the corner to peer into the computer room, where a couple foxes were raiding the house, probably looking for valuables. 'damn scavengers' he thought as he stepped into the room and racked the pump on the shotgun to get their attention. Both foxes, a brother and a sister, ears twitched towards him and they turned to face him, the one on the left taking a step back and tripping over the drawer he was rooting through.
"Listen, I'm not gonna hurt you" Chad said reassuringly. "I just wanna know, what the FUCK is going on?"
"Look man, keep your voice down, you don't want them to hear you do you?" said the fox closest to him.
"what the fuck are you talking about?" Chad said genuinely confused.
"Look we can't stay here. Sis, their gonna find us, we need to get moving." the second fox said picking himself off the ground.
"wait, who? What are you guys talking about?" asked Chad as they backed towards the door. The two spun and broke into a run and out the door. He extended his arm to motion for them to wait but they were already down the stairs and halfway out into the street by the time he realized he was alone again. With the silence closing in on him he took time to collect his thoughts. 'Twenty five shells for the shotgun, hopefully I don't need them' he mentally noted as he stepped towards the door.
Once back outside he needed to rethink his situation, where was he going to go from here. Just then he realized he never called anyone back. Sliding his phone out of his pocket as he slung the shotgun over his shoulder he sat on the railroad ties that lined the edges of the driveway. Thumbing James' phone number into his phone he brought it up to his ear. Ringing, once, twice, three, four. Just as he was about to give up...
"hello?" whispered James.
"James!" Chad exclaimed. "Oh thank god! What the hells going on?"
"Look I cant talk right now, get to my house if you can, I have a plan." James quickly said then hung up.
"Fuck!" Chad sighed as he stood up, sliding his phone back into his pocket.
James house was just a short run from here. He could probably make it in five minutes. 'wait what the fuck am I thinking, my dads trucks in the back yard...' he thought as he bounded back into the house. He snatched the keys out of the cupboard and went out the back door. Climbing into the truck he felt reasonably safer.
The engine turned over and he pulled out of the driveway and up the street. He then stopped at a stop sign and thought to himself, 'what the fuck am I stopping for?' and accelerated up the street. He took the corner left and sped up to eighty. At this rate he'd make it to James' in just under a minute. Sliding into the front yard he locked up the brakes and shut off the engine, jumping out of the truck before it even came to a rest. He took the front steps two by two and flung open the door just in time to here a gun blast upstairs.
"What the fuck!" Chad shouted as he dove behind the couch and brought his own gun to bear.
"We need to get out of here now!" James shouted pouncing down the stairs and turning to fire a few more rounds from his handgun up the stairwell.
"Fuck!" Chad cried as they both ran out to James' truck, climbed in, and sped off, with the trailer of his quads in tow.
"ok... what the hell... is going on?!" Chad said between gasps for air.
"some kind of viral outbreak. Turning furs, humans, any living organism that isn't immune into some kind of hellish monster." James said as the speedometer climbed towards 120.
"who or what did you just shoot upstairs?" Chad wondered.
"My Human, Beethoven." breathed James. "he came at me with his teeth bared, fire in his eyes, and he was sprouting a second pair of legs out of his back."
"Christ!"
"yeah I know."
"where are we going?"
"To find Kyle, and any other survivors..." James replied as he took a sharp right, almost flipping the trailer.
As the two pulled up in front of Kyle's house they noticed the front door ajar, a few windows of the house broken out, and tire tracks, unmistakably left by his jeep across the front lawn and into the street.
"I guess he's not here..." Chad said, thumbing towards the house. "Where else would he be?"
"I don't know, but he can handle himself, we need to come up with a plan." James said leaning back in his seat... "Christ today sucks..."
After a few minutes of careful deliberation the two drove off towards wal-mart. There they decided to regroup with any survivors and make a base of operations. On the way there they encountered no other furs, no anything for that matter. Just deserted streets, abandoned cars, and empty buildings. They pulled into the parking lot and stopped near the edge...
"you see that?" Chad said pointing to a silver fox crouched next to a car in the center of the parking lot.
"yeah" said James "whatcha suppose he's doin?"
"probably tryin to get into walmart?"
"maybe..."
Just then the fox stood and sprinted 30 feet to the next car and slid into cover behind it.
"Woah shit did you see that?" Chad whispered, seeing a car 100 feet to the furs right rock back and forth violently, as if it was hit by a bull.
Just as he pointed at it a massive beast climbed onto the roof of the rocking car.
"SHIT! James that guys gonna need our help, lets roll!" Chad yelled as he started to roll down his window.
James tromped on the accelerator and the truck leapt forward and over the median. Chad, now with the window all the way down, slid up onto the door and shouldered the shotgun. Just as the beast was almost upon the fox crouched behind the car, James and Chad drove past him and Chad blasted a round of buckshot into the beasts sternum. The beast, knocked back by the close range shot flipped backwards onto the car behind it.
James slamming on the breaks screamed "Get in the trailer!"
The fox, not one to question his saviors quickly dove into the trailer and the truck accelerated away from the beast, which was now regaining his footing.
"James, plow straight through the glass into walmart." Chad instructed.
"But..."
"Just do it!"
James slammed his foot down and the truck roared to life, now reaching 55 mph.
"HOLD ON TO SOMETHING BACK THERE!" Chad yelled out the sliding window in the back of the truck to the fur in the trailer. The fox grasped tightly to a tire of one of the quads just before the truck impacted the windows. Luckily the truck had enough momentum to carry it all through both layers of thick glass and steel crosspieces and into the register lanes of walmart.
All three of them bailed and sprinted for the returns desk, vaulting over and coming to a rest behind it.
"Hi, my names Chad" Chad said to the fox extending his arm.
"Bill. Thanks for saving my ass back there" Bill said shaking Chad's paw.
"don't mention it, you'da done the same for us if the situation was reversed." Chad smiled.
"Shh." interrupted James.
?
All three of their ears perked up and twisted about as the sound of crunching glass was heard, followed by a low guttural growl. Chad poked his head up to see where it was, and quickly stifled a gasp and ducked back down. It was right on the other side of the counter, luckily its back turned toward them. He flicked his paw towards James' gun, then at James, then himself, and then brought his paw to point over the counter and mimicked shooting... James nodded, then held up three fingers. Two. One.
In unison Chad and James stood and unloaded everything they had left in their magazines into the beast. After a moment it roared and fell flat on its face and lay motionless.
"Yeah!" James and Chad yelled exchanging high fives all around.
"Alright so this is probably gonna be our home for a while." Chad said to Bill and James. "We need to barricade the entrance, now that we have a giant hole in it."
They made their way to the back into the employees only section. After searching though no luck was had as they couldn't find a forklift.
"shit, we're gonna need to make our way over to Home depot. They have a forklift." James said.
They all gathered by the hole In the glass. The plan was simple, leapfrog their way across the storefronts to Home Depot, jack their F-lift, and get it back to walmart basically the same way.
They made there way across the store fronts without confrontation and stacked up on the sliding doors into Home Depot. James counted down silently again and they all rushed in guns sweeping back and forth. None of them were expecting to find anything like this.
