Ruby’s got a look in his eyes. It’s one you’ve seen before. It’s one that presages a question, one that you’ve wanted to say yes to but never felt the time was right when it was asked before.
“Hey… I got an idea for something we can do… wanna hear it~?” the lynx’s question is dripping with flirtation, and he leans forward towards you, cross-legged on the bed, your legs still in his lap and getting massaged. He’s dressed down in a baggy hoodie and baggier sweatpants; you’re both basically in pyjamas. This feels a bit like a sleepover, honestly… not that you’re complaining. It’s exactly the vibe you want.
You look outside, at the pitter-pat of rain drumming against the window; it’s far less intense than it had been, down from a downpour to a drizzle. The sky’s still grey, threatening to start another torrent. Not that you’d planned to head out for a walk, or head home anytime soon.
You’re staying overnight, after all, and things are going to get a little spicy before too long.
So… why not start it early?
Your gaze flicks down towards his feet. Those big lynx paws are wiggling their toes. So enticing. You were gonna grab on to them at some point. Maybe that’s what he wants…
“What’ve you got in mind?” you ask, fixing him with a look like you’re trying to read his mind.
“You know how I’ve been bugging you about trying hypnosis? Since we’re both cosy right now, I think we’re in a really good place to try it.”
Yep, you figured that he’d ask.
You’re 100 percent positive hypnosis isn’t real. Still, the idea of it is pretty hot. Being mindless and unable to resist someone’s power, dominated by them, calling them Master… you could play pretend with that, that would probably be pretty fun. He doesn’t need to know that it doesn’t work. You wouldn’t want to break his heart.
“Sure,” you say, and the affirmative seems to energise Ruby’s entire body. His tail wriggles with excitement, and his grin grows even wider than before. He bounces a little.
“Awesome! Great! Hang on…”
The room’s temperature has changed. Up till now, it was chilled out, slow paced, cosy, with the hint and anticipation of something more - of disrobing, of hands exploring…
You’ve honestly had a similar question you’ve wanted a ‘yes’ for, but have been too afraid to ask. Maybe tonight will change that.
“C’mere, sit on the bed with me.”
You’re snapped out of your anticipatory trance - heh, not that that was an actual trance - and you look back at Ruby. He’s got his paws closed around something, but he’s not showing you it… probably a pocketwatch or something. That’s what a hypnotist’s supposed to use, right?
You sit cross-legged in front of him, your knees almost touching.
“You ready?”
“I guess so,” You say, still looking down at his clenched paws.
“Well, I think we can make you even more ready. See, hypnosis isn’t just about looking at some swirly eyes or at a swinging pendant. Well, it can be, but I think your first experience should be a really grounded one, simple. A standard trance, nothing too crazy.”
“You’re not gonna use any magic on me?”
“Nope! No mind control here. I’m just gonna give you the base-line experience. Hopefully we’ll get rid of some of those preconceptions you’ve got.”
“Pssh.”
“Now, let’s put those expectations out of your mind for a moment. Let’s start with some nice deep breaths. Like we’re about to start a meditation - which, trance kind of is, actually.”
“Okay.”
“Just breathe in…”
Ruby’s chest rises as he demonstrates, taking a deep, sharp breath. You do the same, feeling your shoulders raise and your stomach expand.
“And out….” he exhales the words, and you sag and exhale with him.
“In again… and we’ll hold it this time, just for a moment or two…”
You follow his instructions.
“And out.”
So it continues. Each time you breathe in, you find yourself holding your breath a little longer each time. It never gets uncomfortable, but every time as you breathe in, you find yourself waiting for, anticipating the point where you breathe out.
When it comes, you comply, and sigh out with him.
“Notice any changes?” Ruby says. “Have you sunk into the bed a little bit?”
“Hmm… feels like it,” you say. You definitely feel a little more relaxed. But sinking down? Maybe not…
“You might notice as you breathe in… hold…”
You wait with bated breath for the next word.
“And out, and you relax, you might, in fact, notice your body sinking into the comfortable softness beneath you.”
The more you think about it, the more you realise Ruby’s right. You are sinking into the bed.
“Yeah, I can tell by the smile on your face that you’ve noticed it too.”
You’re smiling?
Dang, you are.
Your lips curl even wider and you giggle self-consciously. You wonder what else Ruby’s noticed.
“That’s right, that’s ok. That’s a sign that everything’s working as it should. Do you wanna do something with your hands? My paws are right here…”
Ruby’s paws are brushing against your knees. And your hands have been a little fidgety. So why not?
You take hold of them. They’re quite toasty, and the pads are very soft, like bread dough. Rubbing them really takes the pressure off, and takes your attention away from your hands and back to your breathing.
“There,” Ruby purrs. “See how much better that feels? You’re getting more and more relaxed, more and more primed. In fact, you can close your eyes for me if you’d like. It looks like you want to close them, right?”
You close your eyes, and continue to breathe, no longer prompted, but holding your breath for a little longer than you normally would each time. Breathing deeper feels nice. It feels right. It feels like something’s happening to you, you’re not quite sure what, but it…
“You’re wondering what this feeling is. You’re noticing how there’s been a shift in your subconscious, and looking ahead to where it leads. Anticipating what will happen next, like you’re waiting for a traffic light to change, or you’re waiting for an opening to strike a boss in a videogame. Your entire stream of consciousness is focused on what comes next. Listening, waiting, and preparing.”
Ruby’s so right. What else could he be right about?
