What is Love? Chapter 4
*BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP* Jakob quickly slapped his alarm clock, and like usual, it fell onto the floor, ending with an elongated *BEEEEEEeeeeeep.....*. He yawned, stretching and sitting up in his bed, one of his ears flopped over cutely. He looked around, to get an image of where he was since apparently he had forgotten, and realized he was only in his perfectly organized room. Jake got up, walking with his hands out as if he were blind in the dark to turn the light switch on, and then as he found it and was plunged into light and had to close his eyes waiting for them to adjust. He walked over to his window, and opened the curtains. Jakob's backyard (what his window displayed) led to a woodsy area. He lived on a very, very suburban street, yet where they were placed, was basically the edge of the suburbs, and that woods surrounded a good half of it. Jake often believed it should have been called a forest, but his mom always said it was a woods, he only shrugged to himself. He could see that the sun had not yet fully risen, but the light looked beautiful through the trees and the sky was a soft lavender with a few of the brightest stars still visible.
Jakob rubbed his eyes and looked at himself in his bathroom mirror, lazily grabbing his toothbrush and squirting some paste onto it. He leaned in closer towards to the mirror, making sure he got every pointy tooth and made it shine. After that, he groggily put on everything he could to make himself even more perfect; lotions, creams, anything that made him look better (or that he thought did at least) he used. It was a habit of his for a while, and it took a large portion out of his morning each day. After finishing up, he yawned and smiled to himself in the mirror, and walked into the hallway and on his way to the kitchen to greet his mom.
"Hey Mom, good morning!" He smiled at her.
"Oh, hey deary, sleep well?" She smiled back at him warmly, moving her gaze from her pan on the stove cooking..was it pancakes? Jake couldn't tell.
They went through their usual morning dialogue, and after eating breakfast Jake was off to school as usual. He walked to school, as he did home when school was over. It was always boring for him, at least on the walk there because he could never see any of his friends like he got to after school. Today though, with the sun shining brightly now through the trees, it made him feel a little better inside, but once again the thought of the stomach aches when he was around Andy came up again, and then Chris; Jakob was unsure of what he thought about his newly found yet close friend. What that fox at the theater said the day before really bothered Jake, but he was really warming up to Chris.
Maybe... maybe....maybe I am -he swallowed- gay... It can't be that bad anyway... they say we should embrace who we are, but would everyone still think of me the same way if I was? This time he sighed, confused about himself and what was going to happen, his ears perked as he looked to see a red truck pass by, the light shining off of it from the sun made it hard to look at. For some odd reason, it made him think of Kate's redish-brown fur. Her gentle smile always made Jake feel warm inside, yet they seemed to argue more than not. I wish we could just get a long sometimes... like Chris and me, we haven't really gotten into any dramatic arguments like, at all, wonder why... The black wolf giggled to himself thinking of how he crept up on Chris at the entrance to the movie theater and spooked him, the way Chris jumped was hilarious Jake thought.
He hoisted his backpack up higher as it was starting to sag, as he neared his school. Jakob took in the detail for once on what the school looked like. It was made of rusty colored bricks, with two entrances that had big doors. It also had many windows, which Jake knew covered all sides of the building. It also had it's name carved into the bricks at the top- "Harvan Docks High School" And under that "1945" was engraved. Jakob tilted his head for a second at that, it was a little hard to believe his school had been around for so long.
He entered, pushing the door open with one paw as he held his backpack strap with his left. Walking to his locker, a few girls smiled to him, maybe with a little wave here and there, and a shy "Hi", but nothing big. He just looked the other way pretending not to see them as he finally reached his own locker, next to the science room's door on the left side. He used right hand, quickly turning to his digits and opening his locker like he had style. Putting his backpack on one of the rungs, he grabbed his supplies and walked right into his first class that he had with Kate, which was easy, since it was just next to his locker; biology.
He took a seat by Kate closer to the back, she smiled when she saw him.
"Oh, hey Jake. How's your morning?"
"It was fine," he dropped his books onto his desk and plopped into his seat with a sigh. "And you, Katie?" He smiled back, each one of his teeth shining from how well brushed they were.
"It was crazy. I woke up at like," she looked up at the ceiling to think, "3 AM because my brother started crying like, really loud at night, and it drove me crazy. And you know what the problem was?" She thundered.
"And he's four, right? Your brother's four?" Jakob raised an eyebrow, his ears attentively pointed at Katie.
"Yeah, and you know why he was crying?" She looked at him seriously. "It was because of a freaking dream he had thinking there were monsters in his closet. Isn't that like, ridiculous , Jake?" She slumped in her seat, sighing, and for once Jakob saw that she was wearing a necklace that had a butterfly on it.
"Wow, that sounds really lame," now he pointed at it. "Hey, where'd you get that, Kate?"
"What, this?" She held it out in her hand, looking at it. "My Grandma... she gave it to me before she died. Pretty, isn't it?" Kate looked back at Jakob, her smile rather sad, her grandma must have been important to her, Jake thought.
"Yeah, it really is. Sorry to bring that up..." He drifted off and looked at his biology book, tapping his pencil and holding it between his fingers.
"Oh, no Jakob, it's fine." Her usual smile came back, relieving Jake. "Anyway, class is about to start, better shut our yaps," they both shared a soft giggle and focused on their teacher, Mr. Bolgawitz, a tabby cat.
"Good morning class," he stated, his glasses fell crooked and he had to adjust them, his words followed by a lame "goood moooorning".
"Okay, everyone, turn to page 387 in your book. Did everyone do their homework?" He asked as if he was teaching middle school or something, but some liked him for that. Jakob was taking in some features, since he was rather bored anyway. He realized that the cat was skinny, slim, like a stick with little muscle. He was wearing a white button-up with a black tie on, making his fur stand out with its black on light brown stripes. He then had black dress pants, along with that shirt tucked into his pants, but , only on one side. Jakob shuffled, realizing he first of all shouldn't be looking at a teach so closely, second should be looking at girls, and third should be focusing on class.
He tried to focus for most of the class later on, but ended up doodling in his notebook. Kate startled him by saying his name, and he dropped his pencil, it rolling the opposite way. He looked at her before caring to get it, but he was a little mad. "What?!"
"I just needed a pencil... my tip broke and if I get up to sharpen it Mr. Bolgawitz will yell at me, do you have one?" She tilted her head to the side slightly, a pleading frown on her lips.
"Ugh, let me get it," he turned around and his eyes went big. Oh man... It's under Andy's desk...Fuck. He looked at the others around him, but the desk was literally between Andy's foot paws. He'd have to ask to get it, and at that thought he was instantly in a cold sweat.
"Uh..um....," his voice was at the tone of a whisper, "Andy?" Jakob swallowed. Amazingly, Andy still heard him, and turned his head, his eyes not happy.
"What?" His voice was tough and stern.
"I kinda dropped my pencil..." he pointed to it, "right there. Could you get it for me?" He looked back at Andy, with that same pleading frown Kate had used.
Andy looked down for it, found it and picked it up, studying it. "This yours?" He looked at Jakob with an eyebrow raised.
"Y-yeah... can I have it?" Jake was prepared for the worst, and he was already slightly leaning back, afraid Andy would blow up on him or something.
"Sure." He handed it back to Jake, who took it after staring at it for a couple of seconds, and then Andy just turned back, looking at Mr. Bolgawitz.
Jake blinked, shrugged to himself, and turned around, handing his pencil to Kate. "There, give it back! I need it too ya know." He smiled and returned also to trying to listen to the teacher, but couldn't help why Andy was actually nice to him for once, it made him slightly happier, even though it was just a pencil, for some reason it made him... hopeful? For what though, he really didn't have any idea.
After boredom returned, he glanced down and quickly turned to Kate to ask for his pencil back so he could continue to doodle, but when he glanced something had caught his eye so he returned to it. His eyebrow raised and his jaw dropped a little, as he realized he must have been subconsciously not even caring about what he had put on the paper. On it were...HEARTS?! Jake nearly cried out, but that wasn't even the worst part, there were letters. "J+A...4 EVER"...What..the...fuck! He glanced around to see if anyone saw what he saw, and then looked back at it to make sure he wasn't dreaming. he closed the notebook, and turned to Kate, asking her for his pencil back urgently, her accepting curiously and handing it back to him. He flipped to the page, and erased it all as hard as he could, shaking his head softly. No way..No way...No way...No-freaking-way did -I- draw that..NO way...
He was panicking, and it got Kate's attention, and she asked worriedly, "Are...are you okay Jakob? You're erasing that so hard it looks like you've gotten to the sheet underneath...something wrong?" The cat's left ear fell sideways and her tail slid under her seat.
"Uh...w-what? No, nothing's wrong at all! I'm just trying to erase something and it...uh...it's not coming off very easily. Heh, yeah, that's it," he gave a nervous smile.
"Oh... okay... need help?" She giggled. "I've never seen anyone have so much trouble with that."
Now he was starting to feel lighter, her smile always made him forget everything else around him just from its simple happiness. "Haha.. no thanks Kate, I'm fine, I guess I was just bored or something..." Jake shrugged.
"Kay..." She kept that smile, but then jumped up a little and her ears perked up, as well as Jakob's when their teacher's voice rose to something of a well-kept yell.
"What are you two chatting about back there?" It was Mr. Bolgawitz, and he wasn't happy. "Do you want to be moved to one of the front seats?" He raised an eyebrow, tapping a pencil in his right paw on his left.
"Nothing, Mr. Bolgawitz. I was just asking him for some help on some genetics stuff." She smiled, and Jake was amazed at how truthful her lie seemed to be.
"Ah, okay, but be quieter, you're disrupting the students around you." He returned to talking about whatever it was that he was talking about, and Jake, looking back at his notebook remembered and his head flooded with thoughts once more. J+A? Why would I ever right that? And Andy is the only person I even know who's first letter of their name is A so that's clearly him... and I'm Jakob...oh, God, what am I going to do about this? I'm so confused about just... everything. Jakob held his face in his paws, uncertain about so many things and how in the world it was even possible for him to be so out of it to write that, and not since when did he make hearts? This wasn't even a big deal, so what, he made some hearts with initials in them, but to him, it meant a lot, and he knew it deep inside himself.

Jakob walked pass the tech ed. room, more specifically the woods room, where class was just ending and he could hear some saws being turned off, along with wood clanking on things, and a smell of timber lingered around the area. Just then, Chris walked out, and Jakob instantly ran up to him and hugged him out of no where.
"Chris!" Chris blinked out of surprised, and Jake, quickly realizing what he was doing, let go, laughing to himself as his cheeks burned a soft pink and he itched the back of his neck nervously. "Oh...sorry Chris... I just..y'know...saw you and was all like "Oh my gosh! It's you!" and I kinda...got carried away I guess....sorry!" He covered his face with his paws, extremely embarrassed and hoping no one saw.
"Oh, it's fine Jake," he smiled kindly, his arms crossed holding some books tightly to his chest. His fur under his ears was matted a little, which Jake suspected was from him sweating with the "safety glasses" on. He also had a wood sliver here and there on his hoodie, which was tightly fitted to his body, showing off his slimness.
"Well anyway, how was class?" Jake was still blushing, but he started to walk now with Chris, on their way to lunch.
"Oh, it was fine, I just get a little nervous around the saws... and the noise is so loud it bothers the hell out of me, but I still love that class, and Mr. Karkson is really nice." He grinned, still tightly keeping his books to his chest. "And how was yours, Jakob?"
"The same really. Phy. Ed. was never really one of my favorite classes, but hey, if I'm going to do good in football I have to be fit, right? Even though I have huge muscles," he flexed, "I still can always get bigger." Jake smirked sarcastically.
"True, can I feel 'em? Pleeeease?" His eyes grew bright and it was clear how badly he wanted to, Jakob easily gave into that smile of his, and those emerald eyes of his, there was something there.
"Hah, I guess so Chris, but just 'cause you're special," he winked and pulled up the short sleeve to his white t-shirt, still flexing as Chris let his fingers feel the tough bicep, leaving him with a satisfied expression.
"Wow, you got something going on there definitely Jake, I'm impressed," he giggled, returning his hand to its original position.
"Thanks Chris, even though I already knew that anyway." He laughed at his sarcastic comment for a moment. "Hah." He couldn't help his tail wagging softly.
They talked more as they walked, as if they had been friends for a while, Kate eventually joined them, and it was so nice to Jakob, to be with his two best friends... it was so simple, and the connection between the three was as tight as a steel rope. Maybe... maybe this is almost like what love feels like... Jakob thought to himself silently, walking into the lunchroom with Kate and Chris at his sides.

It seemed like it was Friday just like that, in an instant, and now Jakob was faced with his tryouts for football. He was getting ready, Coach Anders told him that he didn't have to wear a whole football uniform or anything, he just has to have good shoes and clothes that were okay to get muddy. he put on an old sweater he brought, still a little too tight on him but he shrugged it off, and his jeans were okay to get muddy, Jake knew they'd look even better, he thought it'd make him look more... manly. He chuckled to himself in his head, wondering why he would think something like that as he changed his shoes to more athletic ones.
He began his walk to the field, where Anders had set up everything. The raccoon held a timewatch, and to the side Jake caught Chris sitting on the second lowest bleacher with a book in his lap and his black backpack at his side. He looked up from his homework (at least that's what Jakob figured it was) and waved, and Jakob could tell he was smiling that special again, he smiled and waved back, and made his way to the coach.
"Glad you could make it Jake, are you ready?" He smirked, holding his clipboard in his other hand.
"Yeah, I think so, just tell me what I gotta do and I'll do it, sir." He innocently smiled at the coach.
"Okay, first up, just run from here, to the other side of the field, and back to me. Up for it?"
"Sure thing, let's get started right away!" Jakob got ready, looked at the coach and waited for the signal, and then finally dashed out, running as fast as he could across the field, Chris looking in amazement Jake could see out of his side vision and it made him smile as he ran faster, already done with a fourth of the field.
After getting back the coach, panting, the coach sighed, in a more positive way though. "Not bad, junior. Okay, time for your next little test. You get a 3 minute break, don't waste it."
Jakob then did all of the tests the coach gave him, some easy, and others really difficult, but in the end it was all worth it since the coach, after looking over all of the stuff he had written on his clipboard, finally said to Jake that he was in. Jakob cried out in excitement, so happy to finally be part of the team.
Chris ran up to Jake, and this time he hugged Jakob really tightly, the impact kind of knocked the air out of Jake. "Whoa... hello there buddy..." He smiled, happy that his friend would be so happy for him.
"Great job out there Jakob! I couldn't believe you did everything so well!" He nuzzled Jake's cheek sweetly, making him blush from the kind little grey wolf.
"Thanks a bunch Chris, I'm so glad you came, thought I'd have to do this all alone. Thanks for that too." They let go of their embrace, and started on their way home.
"Wow, how did you run so fast?" He exaggerated his words by moving his hands and arms expressively. "And the way you tackled that dummy was..." he sighed, looking for the right word. "It was awesome... How do you do all of that stuff so well?" He smiled at Jake.
Jakob was really flattered, and was still blushing from when Chris nuzzled him so sweetly. "I don't know..." he looked at Chris for a second, and then back at the ground, once again itching the back of his neck with his paw as a nervous gesture. "Maybe I'm just naturally good at it...," he blushed even harsher, and looked at Chris again, and just barely whispered, "Maybe...it's because you were there.."
Chris clearly heard it, and looked down at the sidewalk as well, and then took Jakob's wrist in his paw. "Jake.." Jakob quickly turned, and then they were facing each other, his cheeks were hot and he broke out in a cold sweat.
"Um... yeah?" He raised an eyebrow and swallowed.
"I will go to every game and practice if that's what it takes Jake." Jakob couldn't stand how honest Chris' green eyes were, and their innocence was pure as can be. He also noticed how angelic Chris' face was, his soft cheeks...and his cute black nose all with his signature grey fur that shone like silver in the light of the afternoon sun. Chris' ear twitched cutely, making Jakob giggle for a moment.
"That would be awesome Chris, just.... great. I'd love to have you there with me, and maybe Kate'll tag along too when she feels like it." He smiled. "Let's just hope I don't look at you when I'm about to make a touchdown to smile and wave and end up being tackled to the ground or like... hit the field goal pole or something...if that's even possible... I'm not sure, but anyway, yeah, I'd love that if you came to everything." He subconsciously slid his hand up, so instead Chris was holding his hand instead of his wrist, Chris noticed and blushed. "Well, otherwise we better get going home... won't your parents be all weird wondering where you are?" Chris seemed to be elsewhere, and he touched his nose to Jake's. Jakob shivered, feeling a warm sensation build up through his body. And then it all hit him, he understood everything. All of the pieces fit together in the large puzzle that was his life, when his friend, Chris, kissed him so passionately, that he held his hand even tighter and did something even more riskier... he kissed back.
