Jack woke up in his mate’s bedroom, the sun was starting to peek through the windows, but the room was completely quiet. Aurora was still asleep against him, holding on to him like there was no tomorrow. He looked around the room, and felt slightly embarrassed, as if he was supposed to be sneaky or something. The king obviously knew he was there, but it didn’t seem to make a difference. He noticed a wardrobe in the corner of the room, and it was filled with dresses. This was definetly a royal’s room, and the bed he was lying on seemed very expensive. Aurora woke up eventually, yawning and stretching. She smiled when she looked up at him and nuzzled him.
“Morning.” She told him.
Jack nuzzled her back. “Hi.”
“Good sleep?”
“Not really.”
“Are you still mad at me?”
“A little.” He replied. “But I saw your face when I was chained on that stage.”
She sighed against his neck. “I really just wanted to stay with you at your home, I wanted nothing to do with being a princess.”
“I believe you.”
There was a knock on the door.
“What is it?” Aurora called.
“The king is requesting your presence, and that of your mate.” A voice called back.
“Alright.” Aurora looked at Jack. “You don’t have to get ready or anything, I’m not either.”
Jack nodded, and they both got up.
“So, about your power.”
Jack looked at her. “What about it?”
“It’s okay, I’m not afraid and I don’t think anything less of you. You’re the same dragon either way.”
Jack smiled.
“Also, I think the black is kinda hot.”
Jack blushed, and looked away as she smirked. He rubbed his head against her neck, making her purr.
“Stop that, we have to go see my father.” Aurora replied.
Jack chuckled, and they walked out of the bedroom and made their way to the king.
“Worked for the princess.” Jack mumbled, looking around the palace.
“Yeah, sorry. I didn’t want to lie after a while.” Aurora replied, shooting him an apologetic look.
They made their way into the throne room, and stepped in front of the king.
“Hello Aurora.” The king spoke. “And Jack.”
Jack blushed, and nodded to him.
“So, you just had to run off and find a mate yourself.” The king sighed.
Aurora looked over at Jack, who felt like he wanted to turn invisible.
“What do we do with you two now?”
“You can let us go home.” Aurora replied
“Home? This is your home.”
“My home is where my mate lives, and he lives with his family.” Aurora smiled at Jack.
The king looked hurt, but Jack felt a proud feeling in his heart. The king threw his paws up in the air and sat back on the throne.
“Whatever, you’re free to go wherever you please.”
Aurora smiled, and dragged Jack out of the room. They immediately took flight and made their way back to their home. Jack landed and made his way inside, Aurora held behind him, obviously scared of what Aurora might do. Jack covered her with his wing, and led her into the living room. Amy and Sam were sitting on the couch, and they sprang up when Jack walked in. They both hugged him hard, and when they pulled away, Amy lunged at Aurora.
“Let me at her.” She grunted.
Jack stepped in between them.
“Guys, it’s okay.”
“She nearly killed you!”
“It’s fine, she tried her hardest to stop the king.”
“Not hard enough.”
“She’s the reason he let me go.”
“But if it weren’t for her, you wouldn’t have been in danger in the first place.” Amy growled.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t expect that anyone would find me until it was much too late.” Aurora replied.
“Much too late?” Jack turned to her.
Aurora blushed. “I kind of expected for us to already have kids by the time they found me.”
Jack also blushed, and stammered a bit, but Amy shook her head.
“I warned you!” She tried to lunge again, but was stopped by Jack.
“Amy! Calm down!” Jack told her. “I’m fine, nothing bad happened, and everything is okay.”
“You lied to all of us, your own mate!” Amy shouted at Aurora.
“I was going to tell him, but I just didn’t know how.” Aurora replied.
“Stop! All of this is pointless.” Jack replied. “Aurora is and always will be my mate. I never once regretted it.”
He looked over at Aurora, who looked both hurt and happy at the same time.
“You will forgive her, because there’s no other option.” Jack added.
Amy shook her head, and walked out of the room. Sam walked up and looked Jack up and down.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine mom” He answered.
“You made quite an impression out there, even if you didn’t do anything.”
“How?” Jack turned to her.
“All your friends, your team, and your dad’s old friends were stirring up a riot when they found out about the whole situation.”
Jack smiled. “I’ll have to thank them tomorrow.”
“The general has returned your whole team to reserve duty.” Sam told him. “And mine too.”
“I’ve no doubt been relieved of my duty at work as well.” Aurora noted.
“Fired?”
“Basically, yeah, but they wouldn’t say that.”
Jack sat down on the couch, and sighed. Aurora sat next to him and laid her head on his shoulder.
“So, I have a question.” Sam told them.
“Shoot.” Jack replied.
“Are you going to be Queen? If so, is he going to be the King?”
Aurora sighed. “I think so, but I sure hope not, I ran away to have a peaceful life, not just find a mate. I ran away so that I could raise any children I might have away from how I was raised.”
Sam nodded. “So, what would that mean for the rest of us?”
“You would become royals, and would likely stay at the palace.” Aurora replied. “Unless you choose not to.”
Sam rubbed here forehead. “So, lose my son and barely see him, or move our entire family and change our entire way of living.”
“Truthfully, I never wanted to be found, so I didn’t think too much on what would happen if I did.” Aurora told her.
Jack closed his eyes, just wishing that this was all a bad dream and that he would wake up in his bed with Aurora as if this never even happened.
“Remember when you told me that Jack’s great-grandmother told you stories about how his family were royals?” Aurora asked.
“Yeah, but that’s just an old tale.”
“Could it be true? It would greatly help if your family was a fallen line.”
“Help what?”
“The Emerald Kingdom was promised me if I didn’t choose a royal mate in a certain period of time. But if you are royals, they can’t argue that my father broke his promise.”
Sam nodded. “We could check the records; the Thorns have been here since the city was built.”
“I think I’ll stay here, wait for May and Jennifer to return.” Jack replied, feeling himself grow tired.
“Alright.” Aurora pecked him on the cheek. “See you later.”
She left with Sam, and Jack quickly fell asleep.
“Jack? Jack!”
Jack opened his eyes and noticed his little sisters looking up at him excitedly.
“Your okay, mom didn’t know what happened.” May hugged him.
“Yeah, the king pardoned me.” Jack told them.
“But why, I’m happy, but why?” Jennifer asked.
“He saw how Aurora looked while I was about to be executed, and changed his mind so that she could be happy.”
Both of his sisters darkened at the mention of his mate.
“I can’t believe her, hiding something like that.”
“She couldn’t tell us; she couldn’t tell anybody” Jack told her. “Listen to me, Aurora is my mate, and anything that hurts her hurts me. Mateship is a permanent thing, and I wouldn’t want it any different. I love her no matter what she is, and I want you two to forgive her.”
They both frowned, then eventually nodded.
“Fine, but she better tell me everything about being a princess.” May replied.
“She probably will anyway.” Jack smiled.
“Did you go to the palace?” Jennifer asked.
“I did, I stayed there for a night.” Jack told them.
“How was it?”
“It was… Strangely empty. Clean, and covered with expensive stuff, but empty.”
“What was the king like?” May asked.
“He seems to care about his daughter, we didn’t talk much though.”
Aurora walked through the door with Sam, and they both were carrying a stack of papers.
“Hey.” Aurora replied.
“What’s all that?” May asked.
“A set of records about your family.” Sam told them. “Turns out they have been here since before the city was built. The Thorns brought records from their old home luckily.”
“You are all royals.” Aurora smiled. “An old fallen line from the origins of this kingdom.”
“Really?” Jennifer gasped.
“Your family might be older than mine.” Aurora replied.
She nuzzled against Jack, who smiled at her.
“How are you feeling?” Aurora asked.
“I’m good, feeling kind of odd, but otherwise I’m fine.”
“I sent a letter to my father, telling him everything, hopefully he can reach out to the king of the Emerald Kingdom and calm him down.”
Amy eventually came down for dinner, she still shot dark looks at Aurora every once in a while, but she remained silent. After they finished their meal, everybody went into their rooms for the night. Jack fell into his familiar bed with a happy sigh, and Aurora joined him.
“You know I’m still mad at you, right?”
Aurora looked up. “Why?”
“Because you could have told me, I could have protected you.”
“I just wanted all of that to go away, and it did, for a while.”
Aurora buried her face in his neck, and he started to feel something wet.
“Are you crying?” Jack asked.
“I thought I was going to lose you.” She replied.
“It’s okay.” He soothed.
“I don’t know what I would have done if you died.” Aurora sobbed. “I don’t think I would have survived without you.”
Jack wrapped his wings and arms around her, and held her tightly. She sobbed for a while, before eventually falling asleep. Jack watched her for a while, feeling her calming heartbeat and breathing, before falling asleep.
Amy stood next to her brother’s room. She had heard Aurora crying, and couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. She didn’t choose that life, but she did have it forced on her since she hatched. Amy couldn’t blame her for wanting to fall in love, but she could blame her for what happened to Jack. Eventually she heard Jack’s snoring, and walked out onto the balcony, she took flight and made her way to one of the neighboring districts. She landed in the middle of a square full of moon dragons, and ducked into one of the stores. She ran out the back of the store, and made her way to a specific house at the end of a street. She knocked on the door, and smiled when an ebony-white dragon answered.
“Hi.” He greeted her.
“Hi, Mark.” Amy blushed.
“I made fish.”
“Sounds good.”
She stepped into the house and they both sat down at the kitchen table.
“How was your day?” Mark asked. “I heard there was some problems.”
“It turns out Jack’s mate is the princess.”
Mark spit out his drink. “What?”
“Yeah, and they nearly executed Jack, but the king decided to pardon him for his daughter.”
“Is he okay?”
“He got home this morning, with Aurora.”
“So, Aurora’s the princess?”
“Apparently, and she almost got him killed.”
Mark sat back, stunned. “So, your brother, is mated to the princess?”
“Yeah, I’m weirded out about it too.”
“What about the Emerald Kingdom.”
“Aurora really loves my brother, and refuses to choose another if he were to die, so the Emerald Kingdom is stuck.”
“You’re still mad at her, aren’t you?”
“Very, I told her not to hurt him, and she almost got him killed!”
“But everything’s all right.”
“Yeah, but that doesn’t change the fact that she lied to him, to all of us. I don’t blame her, but our family can’t handle something like that.”
“Do you think anything would have changed?”
Amy looked up at Mark, and smiled. “You always find the logic in any situation.”
Mark smiled back. “You know you love it.”
Amy blushed again, and dug into her food. After they finished, Amy sat back and smiled at Mark.
“Thanks, that was delicious.”
Mark nodded. “Thanks.”
They got up and walked over to the couch. Amy leaned against them and they sat there in peace for a while, before Amy leaned against Mark’s shoulder. Mark froze and blushed, before relaxing.
“Mark, what do you think about a real relationship.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, would you like to be in a real relationship? Like, boyfriend-girlfriend.”
“But, what would your mother think?”
“Does it matter?”
“Well, no, but I worry about you.”
“It’s fine.” Amy replied.
She leaned over and kissed Mark on the cheek. He blushed and beamed at her.
“Isn’t it tradition for the male to initiate that?”
“What about us is traditional?”
“Right.” Mark nodded.
“So, meet again next week.”
“I’d like that.”
Amy smiled and nuzzled against him, then left the house. She snuck back into her house, then collapsed on her bed with a happy sigh. She looked out the window and suddenly remembered that there was a meteor shower tonight. There were many sun and moon dragons out at the observatory, she could see them partying in the distance. She felt her eyes close, and vaguely wished she was asleep in Mark’s arms.
“Jack!”
Jack woke to light shaking from Aurora.
“What? What is it?”
“There’s a meteor shower tonight, want to watch it?”
Jack smiled, and they both got up. They both made their way to the roof, and settled down just as the first stars started to fall.
“Ooh.” Aurora spoke. “I wasn’t allowed to see the last one.”
He hugged her close and they watched the light show together.
[Royal line detected: Ultimate guardian in route to verify.]
One of the meteors was not what it seemed. A dark orange sun dragon was watching the shower above him when one of the meteors crashed nearby. He flew over to investigate it, and landed just outside of the crash site. He was wondering if it was metallic, because he could earn a pretty penny from it, but was interrupted when a black dragon walked out of the crater, shaking his wings and stretching.
“Who are you?” The orange dragon asked.
“I am the Ultimate Guardian, now I have a question for you.”
“Okay?”
“Do you know where Jack Thorn is?”
“I don’t know where he lives, but I have heard of him. I think he’s in one of the guard districts.”
The black dragon nodded, and walked away. The orange dragon turned and watched him leave, wondering what that was about. He turned and noticed that there was no meteor in the crater, he figured the strange dragon must have taken it. He shrugged and returned to his original position and watched the rest of the meteor shower.
