Trishy the Goblin hums to herself through the night and into the early morning. Her travels take her from her cave just outside the city limits. The little goblin girl bounces in her step, her boots shining with the street lights.

And such lights there are in the city. Even as the sun starts to poke up and the number of cars increases, the city is awash with bright colors that make her squeal.

As Trishy makes her way, so many smells waft up around her. This must be the bakeries and the cafes she heard about. Oh, what would it be like to order a tall coffee? She will have to find out!

As she delightfully moves her way to cross a street, the taller humans that make their way have their heads stuck in their phones and don’t notice her.

Oh, to have a working phone! Wouldn’t that be fun as well! She could use them to talk to her friends.

Out of her dirty pocket, she pulls out the cracked and uncharged device—one of many things in her cave that reminds her of the wonderful world outside.

Ah, in the big city, she can also have friends!

Would Trishy find one here today? Would she magically bump into one? Oh that would be oh-so-wonderful.

But she too is enamored with her small brick and bumps right into someone’s leg.

Trishy squeaks and turns up to apologize, only for a hot cup to fall, spilling over her hair. The goblin leaps and yelps and shakes her head, splashing droplets of the brown energy liquid all over the place, even on the expensive skirt of the woman standing before her.

“Gah, what the fuck!?” whines the passerby, stumbling back. The elven woman with her black hair in a bun and her hands in gloves gasps and shudders, stepping back even further. “Ughh, get away from me, you disgusting beast!”

Blinking and looking back up to the woman, Trishy, with tears in the corners of her eyes, frowns. “Buh-beast. No, I’m Trishy?”

The woman pulls a handkerchief from her jacket pocket and presses it to her face. “You’re a disgusting smelly goblin! I thought we kicked out all of your kind a century ago! Go, go, shoo! Get away from me, you ugly little thing, you.”

“I’m… I’m ugly?” Trishy asks, looking down at her hands.

“But of course you are,” says the elf. She opens her arms wide, spinning around. “Look at how tall I am, how statuesque my body.” She brushes her fingers over her mouth, “how soft my lips are, and how smooth my skin. By the gods, so many in the world wish they were as beautiful as any old elf, let alone me! I, the great Anastasia point and laugh at your ridiculousness. I gag at your ugly, rat-like features and those ridiculously huge, floppy ears like yours. You are nothing compared to my sculpted visage and my most wondrous pointed and stiff ears.”

The goblin gal listens to the boasting monologue, her ears drooping lower and lower, her shoulders slumping more and more the longer and longer that Anastasia speaks. “I… I just wanted to make some friends and see the city.”

Pinching her nose, Anastasia hisses. “Nothing as ugly as you deserves to be here among the beautiful and the civilized. I’ll call the authorities on you now.” She says this, pulling out her phone but pauses and swipes at Trishy, grabbing her old cracked phone and yanking it free. “And I’ll take this stolen phone back from you! No matter how trashy it is, no one deserves to have their things taken by a goblin.”

Trishy’s body shakes after all those insults, her eyes glowing as she stares down. She grits her teeth, which seem more pointed, and her ears perk up. “That’s enough,” she growls.

“Oh, what’s this?” Anastasia says, stepping back. “Are you finally showing off your true colors?”

“No,” retorts the goblin, holding her hands before the elf. “You’re going to show your true colors!

Her busted phone buzzes to life, showing a progress bar and a deviously smiling goblin on its screen, stylized in a minimalism. Sparks shoot out for mit, hitting the elf with a weak electric shock!

Anastasia shrieks and lets go of the phone, but it does not drop to the ground. Instead, it sticks to her hand. She waves it desperately, grabbing it with her other hand, trying to rip it off, but to no avail.

“W… what are you doing, you wretched monster?” The elf gasps, gripping tightly to her wrist. “Remove this cursed thing from me at once.

“What’s the matter?” asks Trishy, stepping forward, her voice a vindictive growl. “You can’t handle a little magic? I thought you elves were superior to goblins in every way!”

“You bitch,” the elf says. “It’s a magical duel you want? Very well. I’ll reach into my pocket and… and…” she swipes for her hip, but she misses. Confused, she brings her arm up to look over it, only to scream when she sees how it has grown green, shortened, gotten stubbier.

“W… what are you doing to me?”

“Making your body reflect your heart,” says Trishy. “After all, it’s goblins who are ugly and elves that are perfect. Let’s see about that!” she says. As she speaks, Trishy steps forward, her ears perking up and staying high on her head. It looks much more comical than the short arm that Anastashia grows, but the elf’s eyes, not turning red and yellow, stare fearfully at the goblin.

“No… please, don’t… please have mercy.”

“We shall see, after a serving of comeuppance.”

Anastasia stumbles out of the main street and rushes to a nearby alleyway, knocking into a trashcan and falling over it, crashing to the cobbled street.
