Rabbit Test: Chapter One

Rich finished breakfast and jumped up yelling," Mom? I'm going out to mess around now! See you when you get home from work, ok?"

His mother called back,"Alright dear. Remember the rules and be a good boy. I'll be bringing home pizza for dinner so don't be late."

Rich sighed and rolled his eyes as he called back,"I will! Have a good day at the store. Bye!" He went outside and got his bike out of the garage, jumped on and peddled away. Riding to the park, he looked around for his friends, who he usually hung out with during summer vacation. Not seeing any one, he did notice a small crowd of kids at the ball field, so decided to go see what was happening.

Getting nearer, he saw there was a fight going on and excitedly, he peddled faster. As he got near, he saw something completely unexpected. There were a group of boys that had surrounded a smaller being and it took him a second look before he recognized.

Rich knew about Recombs. One had to be pretty dense, not to know about them but he had seldom seen one in the fur before, or up close. They tended to stick around their own areas, just because of what was happening now. Humans tended to look down on them as animals and treated them badly, even tho they now had the same rights as humans.

Jumping off his rolling bicycle, Rich ran up and pushed thru the circle of yelling boys, to the inside. Two boys were beating up on a smaller male Lapine, or Rabbit derived Recomb. Rich grabbed one by the collar and threw him back, making the other one look up and back off for a moment.

The Rabbit looked up and saw the new bigger boy. Before he could do anything, Rich was pushing the other boys back and yelling,"What the hell do you think you are doing?" One of the boys yelled back,"Fur lover!" Rich got even madder and yelled back,"I am not! I have never even met one before! Look! Not only is he smaller than any of you, he is a Recomb! Recombs don't fight back! You want a fight? Pick on me then! . . . Well? Come on! Put 'em up or take off!"

The younger boys grumbled but decided that leaving would be a better choice because Rich could and was willing to fight back. With general complaints and insults to the Recomb to stay in his own area, the group of boys and spectators took off for other parts.

Seeing that he was not going to have to fight, Rich shook his head and muttered,"Idiots. There were enough of them that they could have taken me. Typical bullies, they don't want anything like a fair fight." Rich turned around to the Rabbit boy, who was laying still, blood dripping from his pink nose and mouth.

Rich stepped nearer and the Rabbit raised a hand protectively, trying to scoot away from what he thought was a bigger threat. Rich stopped and squatted down as he smiled and said,"It's alright. Don't be afraid, I won't hurt you. Here, I have a hanky so you can wipe up the blood. Are you ok? My name is Rich."

Blinking as he considered the words, the Lapine slowly reached out for the offered hanky and his eyes got suddenly big as he yelled out,"Chrissy! No!"

Rich was hit from behind, falling forward and down, under his attacker. He struggled to turn over as the Lapine boy stepped in and shouted,"Stop! Chrissy, he is a friend! He saved me!" Hauling up a slightly shorter version of himself, he pushed her back and bent down to help Rich to his feet as he said,"I'm sorry, friend Rich. That is my sister, Chrissy, who hit you and knocked you over. She must have thought you were going to hit me, like the other boys had done. Here, let me help."

He began to help dust off Rich as the boy looked over at the young girl Rabbit. Both were white furred under their clothes and a foot shorter than Rich was, if you didn't count the ears. Chrissy stepped closer and dropped her ears as she said,"I'm sorry I hit you, Rich. I saw how big you are and I thought you were going to hit my brother."

Rich handed his hanky over to the male and continued to dust the infield dirt off his clothes as he asked,"Where were you, when he was getting beat up? I didn't see you anywhere."

She looked embarrassed and her brother said,"She was hiding behind those trees, as I told her to. I'm sorry, my name is Ben, by the way. Those boys were picking on Chrissy, so when I came over and tried to get her away from them, they turned on me. She ran and hid, as I told her to. Thanks for chasing them off, Rich. I tried to reason with them but they wouldn't listen. They kept on calling me names and then started swinging at me."

Oh . . . I'm sorry they did that. A lot of people treat Recombs as if they don't belong among us. I don't understand why but they do. Your eye is swelling up and you are a mess. I only live a couple of blocks away, so why don't you come with me? I will get you some ice for that eye and you can clean up there. If your mother is anything like mine, she would go crazy if she saw you like this."

Ben looked at the bloody hanky, his shirt and then at Chrissy. He cocked his head a little and waved his right ear, to which she dropped the tops of hers and nodded. A very observant boy, Rich noticed and figured it was some form of non-verbal communication between the two. Ben looked up at Rich and cautiously said,"Uhm, a-are you sure? What about your parents? Won't they mind you bringing us to your home?"

Rich grinned and said,"They won't mind and besides, they are at work anyway. Come on, its that way. Just let me get my bike." Rich led the way, walking his bike as he talked with them. He learned that they moved into a house three blocks away from his home, a week before. They were part of a program to put Recombs into regular neighborhoods. It was to make their presence more open and get humans used to them. Rich told them,"My parents are very liberal, so I know that you are people, just like us. But sadly, they are in the minority. I think you are really brave to be among the first families to move out of the Recomb areas. You know you face a hard battle to convince the other humans to accept you, don't you? I've seen the news and know how many Recombs are injured or killed every year. It is terrible!"

His speech eased the two Rabbits into feeling more comfortable with their new human friend. Walking up to the door of his house, he let them in and offered water or fruit juice. Pouring three glasses of apple juice, he gave them theirs and took a sip of his own. Rich then said,"Come on down stairs. My bedroom is down there and you can use the shower to clean up, if you want."

Showing them his room, he grabbed three large towels, set out his blow dryer and brush, then said,"I hope my shampoo is ok for you. This is all I have to dry your fur with. If you hand out your clothes, I'll put them in the washer for you too. I'll lend you my robe until they are dry."

Before he accepted, Ben said,"You are the first human I have met since moving here, that treats me as an equal. You came up and saw that I was in trouble and befriended me. I want to thank you, friend Rich. This is what we want to happen but you are the first to do it. I won't forget this."

Rich gave a chuckle to cover his embarrassment and said,"You're welcome, uhmm and thank you too. I guess I am different because I try and treat other people, the way I would want them to treat me. Most people seem to only think of themselves, so they see less, being focused inwards. I prefer to look around and learn things. Take your time Ben and I'll get better acquainted with Chrissy. Does she talk much?"

Ben laughed and said,"You are warned! At home, there is only one way to shut her up for a while."

Chrissy threw her brother a withering glare and stuck out her tongue. Rich guessed it said a lot between the siblings. Ben chuckled and said,"She isn't that bad really but she is a female and they always love to talk." He went into the bathroom and soon handed out his clothing, which Chrissy grabbed and said,"Maybe we can dye these pink, to match your . . . nose, brother."

Ben yelled out,"Hey! Don't let her do that, Rich!" Both Chrissy and Rich began laughing and were soon joined by Ben, who then shut the door. As Ben started the shower, Rich led Chrissy over to the laundry room.

Holding his hand out for the clothes, he said,"Let me have them Chrissy. I will spray the blood stains so they will wash out and not set in." After doing the shirt, he looked at the shorts and underwear, noting how they were made to fit the different body and with a hole to let out the tail. Chrissy watched quietly until Rich put them in the washer and turned it on.

As he finished and turned to face her with a smile, she stepped closer and said,"I would like to thank you more properly than my brother did, for helping us. Is it alright if I hug you, Rich?"

He blinked in surprise, then smiled and said,"Really? That would be very nice, I'm sure. Is there a certain way to do it, or is it a regular hug?"

She smiled up and replied,"Just a good hug will do." Her arms came up under his and around his back. She leaned in and laid her left cheek against his chest, then she tightened her arms. Rich put his arms around her smaller, slender body and he hugged her gently. Chrissy squeezed a moment and then relaxed as she said,"My, you are big! And strong too, I bet. Thank you friend Rich. Rich grinned and gave her another hug before patting her back softly and saying,"You are very welcome, Chrissy and I would like that too. Uhm, the clothes will take a little while to wash. Let's go back to my room and talk, ok?"

She smiled up and gave him one more hug before turning loose and stepping back. He led her back to his room and sat on the bed, where she jumped up and sat next to him. He asked her about her family and they began the exchange of information, learning about each other. From the bathroom, they heard the blow dryer running and after a while, it shut off. The bathroom door cracked open and Ben called out,"Do you have that robe, or are my clothes ready, friend Rich?"

The robe was passed in and soon, Ben came out. It hung from his smaller frame but covered him very well. Rich had him sit on his desk chair and went upstairs to get a bag of ice. Bringing it back, he gently placed it against the swollen eye and told Ben to hold it there. It would help with the swelling and the pain.

The three talked for a bit before Rich got up to put the clothes in the dryer. Coming back to the room, he could hear them talking softly but didn't think much about it as there was no reason they wouldn't talk normally. He joined them they continued talking until the dryer shut off. Rich got them out and folded them, then brought them back and handed them to Ben.

The Rabbit stood and let the robe drop off of his body, starting to dress in his clothes. Rich was very surprised and his mouth dropped open as Ben pulled on his underwear. As he did so, Chrissy scolded him,"Ben! Don't you remember the nudity taboo human's have? You should have gone into the bathroom to put your clothes on!"

Seemingly unphased, he continued dressing as he said back,"But we are both males. That modifies the rule. We will be seeing each other in gym class in the fall anyway, right Rich? Did it bother you, my friend?"

Rich cleared his throat and answered,"Uhm, well n-no, not bothered, just very surprised. Your sister is here and you were naked in front of her!"

Both Rabbits laughed, Chrissy rolling on the bed and Ben needing to sit down on the chair. Rich smiled uncertainly until Ben could explain,"I am sorry Rich. You see, only humans are ever naked because they lack fur. I can be nude if I don't have clothes on but never really naked. Recombs have fur and only wear clothes for protection or decoration. We also wear them around humans because it makes them more comfortable, not because we want to wear them. At home, we don't wear them, so Chrissy has seen me nude all her life. Same as I have seen her. Our fur covers up everything but these are our bodies and there is no shame in that, for us. I'll warn mom before you come over, so you won't have a heart attack. Because they don't have fur, humans feel vulnerable with out clothes. We understand. I don't think I would like not having fur but having bare skin all over. How do you stand it, Rich?"

Embarrassed, Rich said,"I never really thought about it . . . This is the way I am and I was born that way, so I never really thought about it before. I grew up this way and it feels normal to me. I think all that fur would tickle and be hard to take care of all the time.

The Rabbits laughed and agreed it was a bit of work to wash and brush themselves but they were used to it too. Rich put a game up on his computer and they all played until it was afternoon. Ben's watch chimed and he said,"It's time to go home, Chrissy."

She kept maneuvering in the game and asked for another couple of minutes. Rich laughed and said,"Something else we share. A will to win and wanting another few minutes." Ben agreed as he watched her defeat a boss and move up to the next level.

She sat back and said smugly,"I knew that maneuver would work! He kept moving in a pattern that I saw how to beat."

Rich told her,"Good job! I took over a week to get past him. Maybe you could try the end some time and help me out? I have been stuck there for weeks and can't beat the last Demon!"

Chrissy grinned and said,"Deal! Call me when you have the time and I will be happy to help."

Rich led them upstairs and they saw the pool in his back yard. He told them they would be welcome to come swimming too and they looked excited, telling him they would, if their parents agreed they could. Ben then admitted that they didn't know how to swim really but they enjoyed wading around in the water. Rich was surprised and offered to teach them. That got him another hug from Chrissy and Ben too this time.

They were leaving to walk home when Rich's mother drove up. She asked about them and so Rich told her how he had found and rescued them at the park, then invited them home. He told her that he liked them and wanted them to be able to come and visit him, if their parents would let them. His mother questioned him over dinner, then talked with her husband when he came home from work. They called the Rabbit parents and introduced themselves. After talking about their children, Rich's parents invited them over for dinner a couple nights later, to meet them and talk.

A couple days later, the Lapine family showed up with Ben and Chrissy for dinner. The whole family were white furred and dressed nicely, which was a relief to Rich. The dinner went well and Rich's mother had served only dishes that Rabbit Recombs liked to eat and would enjoy. The parents told Rich and Ben and Chrissy to go down stairs and play, while they talked. Chrissy worked on the computer game she had been playing before, while Rick showed Ben his comic book collection. Ben was very happy to see them and looked thru it for ones he had not seen, while Rich watched Chrissy work against the boss that had stumped Rich for so long. Ben discovered a weakness for comics while Chrissy showed Rich how she had beaten the last boss in the game.

They were all sad when the parents came down to collect Ben and Chrissy to go home but they promised that they could come back and play, now that they had met Rich's parents. Ben and Chrissy's father, Don shook Rich's hand and thanked him for befriending Ben, as well as rescuing him at the park. Their mother Sue, hugged him and thanked him and his parents for it as well as for supper and the gracious reception.

After they left, Rich had to again explain to his father, how he had come upon them and kept them from being beaten up. His parents were proud of him and told him he had done well. They liked the Lapine family too and said it was perfectly alright if he wanted to invite them over to play. Rich felt very good about his parent's praise and he went to bed, sleeping soundly.

Next day, Ben called and asked if Rich was interested in teaching them how to swim? Rich was happy to hear from Ben so soon and wanted to further know the Rabbit pair. He agreed and said to come over at any time they wanted to. Ben agreed and said they would be over in about an hour, so Rich got ready.

He put on his suit and went out back to the pool. Rich turned up the heat for the pool and began cleaning it, wanting it to be nice for his new friends. He had just put away the tools when he heard the doorbell ring. Letting in Ben and Chrissy, he let them use his room and the bathroom to change into their swim suits.

Ben was quicker to change, coming out in a red pair of loose trunks. Chrissy followed soon after, wearing a one piece, form fitting suit that was deep blue with flowers. Ben's suit contained his tail but Chrissy's had a hole that let her's stick out provocatively. Rich couldn't help but stare at her a moment, before trying not to. The suit was a very pretty contrast with her white fur and a nice compliment to her blue eyes.

OK, lets get in and stay in the shallow end while I teach you how to float first."

Rich gave a grin and said,"I have had lots of practice. Who knows if you can't do better than me, after you have learned how and had practice? I wouldn't be surprised to find that Recombs couldn't do better than humans at lots of things. Like how your quick eye and reactions helped you to bet the game last night. You got it figured out much faster than I did."

Ben cleared his throat and drew Rich's attention, saying,"Shouldn't we move deeper, if we want to try floating?"

Rich looked up and blinked as tho changing mental tracks and smiled a little sheepishly, agreeing. As Rich began teaching them the basics of swimming, he was amused to see how much smaller they looked with wet fur. After a little while, he made them get out for a rest and his amusement was wiped away. Ben got out and the lump of his little tail could be seen thru the wet trunks. He took off the vest and began squeezing water out of his wet fur.

Rich's mouth dropped open again, surprised by the question. He sat up straighter and answered,"Uhmm, not right now but I have had girl friends. Why did you ask me that?"

Stunned, Rich gasped softly and then said,"You don't ask that kind of question! I can't tel a girl about that kind of stuff!"
