Prologue
"Shh!! Quiet they will hear us!!" A voice mutters out of the darkness. Matt blinks groggily as his eyes slowly adjust to the dim light. He looks around taking in everything that he sees; however Matt doesn't see the speaker, who just told him to be quiet. While looking around at the very strange room, he guesses that he is in some sort of small storage compartment. The walls are metal, with wires and pipes running up and down the walls and ceiling. He hears a rumbling around him echoing from the metal around him, almost like an engine. A ship, I must be on a ship. Why am I on a ship? How the hell did I get here? I don't remember anything. He thinks to himself as he continues to take in his surroundings. He remembers nothing of before waking up in the small, cramped metal room.
"Hello?" Matt whispers into the gloom of the room, as he tries to see who spoke to him.
"Shh!! Not so loud, you will get us caught and most certainly killed." The speaker, a young man in his early, to mid twenties steps into view. He is wearing loose black slacks, a gray shirt and the tatters of a lab coat. A scientist? Where am I? Right as Matt opens his mouth to ask a question the scientist walks quickly over to him and clamps a hand over his mouth and draws him back against the wall. The scientist puts a finger to his lips and waits. Both men hear footsteps outside of the room, the door now visible because of the outlined light from the hall. The footsteps stop and both Matt and the scientist hold their breath. The footsteps fade away and they begin to breathe again. The scientist takes his hand away from Matt's mouth and moves away from Matt. He opens his mouth about to ask him what the hell is going on but he shushes him for the third time.
"Not here, not yet I promise I will explain once we land." So we are flying. I'm on a plane? What the fuck is going on. Matt remains seated where he is as he begins to feel the plane or whatever they are on begin to descend. As both men wait, Matt takes a good look at the scientist. He appears to be about six foot two, and maybe a hundred and eighty pounds. His clothes are in rough shape, like he has been running for a while. He has a hard face, as if he has seen a lot of bad things happen, things that have driven the emotion from his face. He has short cropped blonde hair and strangely, slightly pointed ears. His eyes are also a very strange amber coloring. Despite the odd coloring, his eyes look gaunt and have deep circles underneath as if he hasn't slept in ages. Blushing, Matt looks away as the man notices him staring. The next few minutes feels like hours as the silences is everlasting. Finally Matt feels the plane stop and the scientist motions for him to stand up. He beckons Matt forward and opens the door just a crack and peeks his head into the hall way. He opens the door slowly, places a finger to his lips and enters the hallway. He moves quickly and Matt almost has to run to keep up. Matt continues to look around as the plane looks almost military in nature, the passageways continue to twist and turn through maze like corridors, with the place being much too large to be a plane. The scientist fellow appears to know where he is going, so Matt continues to follow him, knowing he could easily get lost in a place like this.
After nearly a half an hour of running, Matt finally skids to a stop almost running into the scientist, as he stares out a window of sorts. Then, he starts running again giving Matt almost no time to look out the window. The scientist appears either both frightened and angry as he runs down the hallway. He must not have seen anything good when he looked out the window. He grabs Matt's arm and turns down a narrow passageway and then starts climbing down a ladder. Matt quickly follows him, wanting answers and thinking that he must know what is going on. Matt follows climbing down several stories on the ladder. Definitely not a plane, this place is way too big. Where the hell am I and why do I not remember anything? Matt thinks to himself as he then reaches the end of the ladder and hop off turning around to see the scientist off running again. Matt lets out a deep sigh and runs after. Soon both men reach a door which the scientist opens with the push of a button and takes off again. Down at the end of the hallway there is another door that opens once you got close. This door led to a huge hangar of sorts filled with planes. Planes and other things that Matt had only ever seen in science fiction movies. This place is really weird and creepy. I must be dreaming.
The scientist runs over the nearest ship and gets in; Matt reluctantly follows as he is still in awe of what he is seeing. Matt follows him up into the cockpit of the ship and straps himself in. The scientist turns the engine on with the push of a few buttons and the ship whirrs to life. The small ship begins to fly up and out of the hangar bay just as alarm sirens began ringing.
"Shit!" the scientist mutters as he deftly flies the ship towards the exit of the hangar and out into open air. Suddenly the ship is rocketed by explosions as it is being fired upon. Matt turns to look back and sees this massive ship that looks like something from a Star Wars movie. Yep I am definitely dreaming. I'm flying in a space ship away from one that is firing laser beams at us. This is some dream. The small ship picks up speed as it maneuvers over the alien looking landscape below. Both men feel more explosions around and Matt begins to panic, yet the silent pilot remains calm. A huge explosion shakes the ship and Matt immediately thinks that the ship must have been hit, yet it is not falling and he doesn't see any smoke. He turn and look behind you as a huge fire ball from the depths of the massive ship they just left lights up the evening sky. The massive cruiser falls to the ground as more explosions rock the small ship in its escape flight.
"Now that we are away from there, will you please tell me what the fuck is going on!!" Matt shouts at the scientist not bothering to try and hide the panic from his voice.
"Not yet, once I make sure that we are safe." The scientist grimly replies. The rest of the time was spent in utter silence as Matt stares out the window. He takes in much of this alien landscape. The ground is barren, no life at all, and dust clouds drift slowly across the ground driven by the wind from your ship. As he looks out the window, buildings start to appear along the ground. Ruins of a city it seems. Then the ship reaches the river. Matt knows this place; in fact everyone knows this place. As Matt looks around, he sees the ruins of his favorite city. The bridges are still standing, but with gaping holes in the middle and many have begun to fall down. The entire city is covered in ash, as the buildings have crumbled and fallen down. Matt looks at the unmistakable skyline and notice that one building standing tall and proud, and appears almost undamaged. The Empire State Building rises from the ruins of New York City. As he takes all of this in, Matt feels tears beginning to fall down his face. His home is gone, Central Park is a giant crater and New York City is almost completely destroyed. Seeing the ruins of the city causes Matt to remember some things of before waking up on the ship. Happy times, sad times, pictures, glimpses of faces, street signs and much more flash through his mind. I used to live here! Why can't I remember everything else? What is going on? He wonders what on earth had happened to cause such damage. Matt also begins to question whether or not this is a dream, cause if it is, it's one fucked up dream. It all feels so real. Matt sits there in silence as they fly over the ruins and away from Manhattan Island. He then feels the ship beginning to descend and see a small cluster of buildings with a hangar in the middle. Unlike everything else these buildings appear to have electricity as the complex begins to light up in the setting sun.
The hangar bay doors open as the scientist swiftly flies the ship in. Matt unbuckles himself and begins to get up out of the chair. The scientist switches off the engine and reaches up into a compartment that Matt did not see before. He pulls down two masks with what looks like small air canisters attached. Matt looks at the scientist questioningly and the scientist responds by putting his mask on, and Matt complies and put his on as well. He walks to the back of the ship and opens the door and exits, Matt follows. As he looks around at the strange hangar around him, Matt hears the clicking of guns and notice that both he and the scientist are surrounded by soldiers with their guns pointed directly at them.
"It's all right; he's the one we have been looking for. Lower your weapons." He says to the soldiers. As Matt looks around at the soldiers, he notices that some of the soldiers have amber eyes like the scientist but none have the pointed ears. He is led out of the hangar and across the courtyard to a group of buildings that have the American flag painted on the side. Good at least that hasn't changed. Matt thinks to himself as he follows the men into a control building of sorts. He is led into a dark room and is made to sit down at the one end of the table. The lights flicker on and he blinks in surprise. Strategic maps cover the walls, and a holographic map of the eastern United States floats above the table. Matt is impressed with the level of detail in the map, and yet he thought that the military didn't have this kind of technology. Then again there were no giant spaceships on Earth the last time he checked. At the far end, he sees another man seated, a man that just exudes this aura of power and control and Matt instantly knows that he is in charge here.
"Welcome, we have been expecting you Matt." The man says in a very deep voice. Matt shudders at the fact that this man knows his name. "I am General Cladus and this man who brought you here is James, you don't need to know his last name. I know you have a lot of questions and in time they will be answered." The man turns to the scientist, James, and talks to him quietly, yet Matt can still hear him. "It has progressed further. This is not good, my own has just started, I found out this morning. It seems that no person is safe and no one is definitively immune from its effects. Eventually, the full stage will be reached and we will have to quarantine ourselves." He says to the scientist, James who then replies "I know, my ears grew this morning while I was waiting for him to wake up, I am the furthest along it seems, some of the soldiers have yet to start. Eventually they will. It only appears to affect males, as far as we know. The enemy too has been infected, while I was on the ship, some of them fully changed." Matt listens intently trying to figure out what is going on.
"I found him unconscious on their ship after I had planted the bombs and hid him in a supply closet until we had begun land. He has no memory of his previous life." What are they talking about? My previous life? What is going on here? Matt begins to pinch his arms, trying to wake himself up but to no avail, he really wasn't dreaming. The two men had finished talking and were now looking at Matt across the table.
"Can you please tell me what is going on now?" He finds himself asking. The general gives a large sigh and looks at James. "We might as well tell him, we brought him back to help us."
James turns towards Matt and begins to explain. "This all is going to be very weird and hard for you to understand. The current year is 2036, you died in 2011, and we brought you back to help us with our current problem. We will start with what has happened since your death. Much has changed. In 2012 the democratic world as you knew it ended. On December 21st, 2012 a coup d'état shook the world. This coup was worldwide and was being planned for almost a decade before, placing important people in Governments around the world. One man swiftly rose up and toppled the governments of the world and proclaimed himself ruler. Sounds strange, but it was true. The man named himself Caius Gracchus Nero Augustus after the Roman Emperors whom he wished to emulate. He was a tyrant; people lived in constant fear of his authoritarian government and its secret police that was everywhere. He controlled all the money and the weapons in the world. Nothing happened for the next few years, as dissent grew, but so did the fear of Caius's power.
"Some of the world's leaders that were left secretly met in New York City to plan a rebellion of sorts, they still had weapons and could hopefully stage a single attack worldwide to take him down. Little did they know that Caius had known of their plot and he had technology that the world had never seen at his disposal, that mother ship you were on was one of seven that he possesses. Caius had already taken into account that there would probably be a rebellion. He developed new weapons using his seemingly unlimited resources. Apparently he had discovered a new element close to the core of the earth had had unlimited energy potential and had fifteen times the destructive power of the most powerful bomb the United States possessed before the Fall.
"Caius knew when and where the rebellion would occur. The night before, he deployed each of his mother ships to the major cities of the world. New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Moscow, Beijing and Tokyo. When the people in the cities woke up they were greeted by the sight of those monstrous ships hovering in the sky, with Caius's symbol on the side. He projected a giant holographic image of himself in the sky and said, 'This is what happens when you try to rebel against the might that is Caius Gracchus Nero Augustus.' He then dropped the bombs on the cities. Each city was destroyed in a gigantic blue flash that was then played around the world by Caius's men as a demonstration. Over one hundred million people died that day. The explosions tore through the city destroying everything. Caius kept one major building standing in each city as a reminder of what he is capable of. The leaders of the rebellion were arrested and publicly assassinated. Unfortunately a side effect of the new elemental weaponry, was that in the reaction massive amounts of oxygen are converted to energy. Even Caius did not predict the amount of fallout that oxygen was being absorbed and the levels in the air dropped nearly three percent that day alone. Millions more would die in the next few weeks as they slowly suffocated due to the lower amount of oxygen in the air.
"About a third of the World's population is fully capable of surviving the lower amount of oxygen in the air. By 2025 that was all that was left in the world. Four billion people had died in under ten years. Oxygen levels had begun to rise as scientists found a way to artificially change carbon dioxide into oxygen and produce energy. Things were looking a little better, yet Caius remained in control. Then disaster struck in 2030. Several of Caius's mines that continued to mine the new element, had major melt downs and exploded, destroying much of Canada, Siberian Russia and Antarctica has ceased to exist, and the entire continent was destroyed in the explosion. All that is left is a small series of islands. The explosion released a tremendous amount of energy, melting the ice. The sea level rose over three feet, flooding most coastal cities and lowland areas. Caius had 10 mines alone on the continent. Only one needed to explode for a chain reaction to occur. The new element, is closer to the surface in the Polar Regions so he used them for his mines. With the reaction, oxygen levels decreased to a point where life nearly ceased to exist.
"We estimate that there are less than 100 million people left alive in the world today, and that number is constantly shrinking. The survivors are scattered all over the world. Many of the major cities lie crumbling as people moved away. Of course Caius survived the whole Catastrophe. He is almost 50 now, and his rule has been uncontested since the first rebellion. Then in 2034 a miracle happened, or so we thought. Scientists discovered that dogs could survive in the low oxygen and had been thriving outside in the harsh environment. They had miraculously evolved in 4 years. Research continued on canine DNA and a gene was procured that they found enabled the dogs to live in the low oxygen environment. Mass production of the gene ensued, they found that Humans could accept the gene without rejecting it. Testing began and it worked. Caius's scientists were the ones who made the discovery of the gene. They began planning ways to deliver it to the population. They settled on distributing it in the air, they mixed the gene with a particle that could be absorbed directly through the skin. Without finishing the testing to see if there were any adverse side effects, they released the gene into the air in late 2035 right around Christmas time. Every person was exposed to the new gene. They took the gene from male dogs, so it was most readily accepted by males. People could walk outside again and live in the outdoors. Everyone praised Caius as a hero, a god."
"But something was wrong with the gene, wasn't there?" Matt asks.
"Yes." James replied, "Something we hadn't expected. That Caius didn't expect either. The reason the gene wasn't rejected by the human DNA was that it immediately set about changing the DNA into something else. " James finished talking and clicked a button on a remote starting a slideshow. There were pictures of the original seven who first received the gene. The pictures were strange, they showed that the DNA has been changed and that changes happened to the Human bodies. Eyes turned amber, ears pointed, fur grew all over the body. The pictures showed the seven males, gradually change into what looked like half human, and half dog creatures. Each a different breed of dog. Something else had changed in their minds. The creatures felt the need to fuck everything in sight. Their sex drive was apparently enhanced. The change had taken several weeks to fully progress long, with the humans fully changed by February 2036 according to the dates on the pictures. The next slide that James clicked to was a video clip, which began to play. Matt watches in astonishment as one of the creatures escaped. It hid in the hallway and a guard found it. The creature overpowered it and began to strip its clothes off and fuck the male guard. As he watches Matt notices that the guard's image is getting a little fuzzy, it appears as if fur is covering the body and the guard too changes into dog creature finishing his transformation once the first creature climaxed. The pair finished and shared a loving kiss. The video ends. Matt looks back at the general and the scientist in astonishment. They could change others through exchange of bodily fluids, and it was much more rapid than just regular exposure.
"This is why we brought you back." The general said, "You were a scientist specializing in canines and DNA, you were the best in the world. We need your help." Suddenly everything fit together, Matt remembered everything. It all made sense, they needed his help to stop the changing and help restore the human population, and hopefully stop Caius as well. This group here seems to be the last of the resistance against him.
"I will help" Matt says.
