CYOA Legacy of the Guardragon: Chapter 2

Clearly I’m no artist, but I’ll keep trying to do some quick little drawings just to give a visual idea of what’s happening.

The two creatures running across the field shared little in common with each other beyond a bipedal stance. The lean muscled hominid jogged with a seemingly endless stamina, a spear in one hand and a look of quiet contentment in waiting for the exhaustion of his opponent to bring the chase to a close.

Ahead but only due to the patience of the hunter, a grey skinned elephantine man in a simple loin cloth gave everything he had to get away. Taller than the hominid by nearly two feet and built to a far sturdier design, his large flat feet stomped on the ground with a show of power that would have been frightening if he had the speed to back it up. Large ears flapped in the wind and the trunk between long white tusks curled up to his face in panic, it was clear there was little more than adrenaline keeping him going.

As the dragon look down on the scene, it would take little effort to punt the little hominid into the ocean and wait for the bubbles to stop coming from it’s mouth, but perhaps that is why some restraint was in order. It wouldn’t do to scare the elephant man, and what possible need could there be in showing off his power? That would surely be understood the moment he made his magnificent presence known.

Spilling air from his wings and swooping down to the running pair, he made sure to let his shadow pass across the form of the hominid. In a delightful series of expressions, the flat face looked skywards and displayed minor interest, confusion, horror and terror; all in the space of a few seconds. Dust bursting around his feet in a rapid course change that would have given a blowfly motion sickness, the hominid ran screaming across the field and refused to look back.

Chuckling heartily to himself, the dragon was satisfied for the moment in allowing the being to run and tell others of the new Lord of the Land. Of far more importance was his first loyal follower, still running across the fields at a rate that could only end in a heart attack. The dragon swooped down so close to the ground his belly grazed the tops of bushes as he went past, a few short seconds all it took to overtake and swing back around in front of the elephant man. The dragon spread the membranes of his wings wide to catch the air and brought himself to an acrobatic halt, one hindleg resting delicately on the ground to support his balancing weight. Posing with wings spread and forelegs wide to bask in the glory of the sunlight as it bathed him in a golden glow, before he lightly dropping back to all fours on the ground.

The elephant had stopped during this display, staring up with beady, tear filled eyes in what must surely have been an overwhelming sense of grateful honour at being in the dragon’s magnificent presence. Tilting his head down to better examine the biped, the dragon noted himself to be very nearly twice the height of the elephant man. Guessing this placed him somewhere in the realm of 15 feet tall based on this, it sent a pleasant stirring of delight through his chest to learn new things about himself.

“Greetings, little person!” The dragon call out, smiling toothily and rather pleased at how his smoothly deep voice enunciated so clearly. “Fear not, for I have saved you from your attacker! The Creators have sent me to protect you from the dangers of this world.”

The elephant stumbled backwards with his chest heaving as he took great gulps of breath, perhaps so overtaken with reverence to the dragon’s status that he felt the need to fall to his knees and thank the Creators for this gift. Grasping his heavy hands together and squeezing his eyes so tightly his face looked as if it were trying to swallow itself, the dragon saw a strange flicker of light spiral around the creature, so similar to what he had seen in the forest just a few hours ago. Yet, almost like a mote of dust in the eye, it seemed to shift and move as he tried to focus on it, never quite where he could focus on it in detail.

“Please, Great Gods above!” The elephant whimpers in a masculine voice, his hands clutched together as he prayed to anyone who was listening. “Spare me another day that I may serve you! I have so much more to do!”

“Gods?” The dragon pondered, nodding in understanding. Of course, these creatures were primitives and simplistic; The Creators could only be Gods to ones such as these. And he, a dragon, mightiest of all created beings, was by design a demi-god. Or a demi-God? Yes, definitely spelled with a capital ‘G’.

“Yes, a God.” The dragon said, purring in pleasure at the sound. “Rest easy for now, little creature. I have been sent upon this world by those you call Gods, to help maintain balance between your kind and others like you. You may call me Kyrsai. So, what’s your name?”

The dragon looks down and says:

I was going to to make this multi-choice, but how about just questions in general? Any questions Kyrsai will ask about the elephant’s life or culture, or actions he’ll take. Also, any information Kyrsai would give away himself; for example, if the story’s a bit confusing and you want Kyrsai’s understanding of what’s happening.

I’m not sure what will occur in the next chapter beyond a conversation, so I’ll leave the next options blank for now, but feel free to suggest a direction you’d like the story to go in if you want and I'll see what I can do.

Also, I originally wrote this chapter in first person and then changed it to third person. Would it be preferable to change this story to a first person perspective, or keep in third?
