Strange Act of Kindness: Part 1
"All is fair in love and war"
-John Lyly's Euphues
My name is Ruwen Lynch. I'm just a doctor, got a PHD a few years ago and decided to set up a clinic. I was just closing down and walking towards my car at that time when I heard heavy footsteps getting uncomfortably close. I carefully glanced at my watch and saw a reflection of three suspicious men hot on my trail. I rushed towards my car front door when one of them decided to grab my shoulder (bad/totally-anticipatable move) and swung his fist, which I managed to dodge and countered by elbowing his ribcage and finishing the move with a taekwondo sidekick aimed at his center mass.
Just when I thought I was getting the hang of it, the other two thugs charged and slammed me towards the car. I let out a cry of pain as my vision blurred and my head burned with pain. The big thug on my left pinned me down as the other thug on my right tazed me and left my limp body on the tarmac beside my briefcase. The thug that I've encountered earlier surprisingly got back to his feet and hissed at my ears “Doc, this would be so much easier if-" I doubled over as he punched my gut, “you cooperate and give us the damn key." His voice is saturated with anger and slowly filled me with dread as I realized that tonight is going to be a long and painful night.
I managed to blink before I saw a guy that they called Leader arriving with a strange orange hot sniper rifle. It took a few more seconds for my vision to clear up and realised that they're extremely high profile HVTs (High Value Targets). I begin to recall this morning news about them robbing a whole bank -A whole 40 storey towering fortress- with energy weapons (level 4: Military Standards. Could cause serious burn wounds and could pierce multiple targets.) My heart sank with fears as I realise what's coming next. They won't leave loose ends... especially when the Leader starts to approach me with blue glow of an energy blade. Just when I was about to close my eye, a fist sized black metallic ball rolled in front of me and stopped in the middle of the three HVTs.
Then,...BANG!
The ball exploded with a metallic pang and blinded me with magnesium white flash. It's a flash-bang. I blinked a few times to recover my vision and saw the Leader and three of his men frantically setting up a defensive position behind a truck. Looks like The Big Thug got struck by a smart disc, the dics electrocuted him and...he is lying prone in front of me, motionless. OK...good riddance! But, who kicked his bucket? I dragged myself out of plain sight and hid under my car. My legs still feels numb from being tazed. “Stay low. You're just a civilian." I told myself. My ears had just stopped ringing when I hear a roar of a supercharged bike. The disc that had impaled itself on The Big Thug fired its mini thrusters, twirled in the air for a while before flying towards the darkness. A HVT yanked the charging lever of his energy shotgun while the Leader took a position on top of the truck with the plasma sniper. Obviously, they're gonna get ambushed. Hope that anyone brave or stupid enough to make the jump bring an army...or the whole fleet because we got eight fucking HVTs and they're all charged up.
I just realised that I've been holding my breath when suddenly a superbike leaped out of nowhere. Instead of a rider, it has a completely enclosed pod shaped compartment, sleek and extremely aerodynamic. It took out three HVTs in a single loud crash. Another two HVT managed to open fire at the bike before they got impaled by a smart disc. Unfortunately, a HVT and The Leader managed to shoot the bike and melt through its engine. Damnit! Whoever the rider was I'm pretty sure he had made a mistake. I stared in horror as they shoot the glass pod open.
...
BOOM!
The ground shook as shockwaves travelled through it.
There is a bomb inside that bike.
The Leader is left cursing on top of the truck as deathly silence washed over the parking lot –save for wailing alarms from vehicles nearby.
“Human Prisoner ID 20-40-56, named Ricardo Diaz. PUT YOUR GUNS DOWN! YOU'RE UNDER ARREST!" an 800 pound heavy class sentry unit blared as it stepped into view and scanned the truck. I bet Mr. Diaz head worth more than-. Oh wait, that's Diaz? 50,000 dead or alive! I wonder which is more surprising, either seeing the armed to the teeth sentry unit or Diaz stepping boldly out of the darkness. I sensed something bad is about to happen as I shoved my body forward and retrieved my briefcase.
“ARRAGHHH[Static]" the robot screamed as Diaz lashed an energy whip that effectively melted the robot's weapons. The whip curled and tightened around the robot's armour as the energy crackled and began to melt the metal. Diaz took out a handgun and aimed at the sentry power core as it desperately tries to divert electrical power from its targeting system to its shields. Realising that the machine is in danger, I took out a flare gun from my briefcase and emptied it at Diaz as I moved from cover to cover. He screamed as his clothing caught fire and the blaze started to pop a few shotgun shells strapped across his chest. Lastly, I ended his misery by using the same method he used on me before (kicked him flat against the truck and stabbed him with his own stun rod). An eye for an eye they say. That feels good.
I quickly deactivated the energy whip and uncoiled it from the robot. “Hey, need a hand?" I said as I help it to stand up. He took some time scanning my face before saying “It's okay doctor....All threat neutralised. Awaiting for personnel to pick up HVTs. Airborne units closing in. Self-repair protocol activated...Standby...". A bright searchlight emitted from the sky as military helicopters began to descend towards the parking area while two APC pulled off from the trunk road and began pouring the place with heavily armoured personnel – some of them are even wearing bomb suits. I just sat on the hood of my car massaging my leg -it still feels a bit numb- while the robot just stand there clutching its damaged arm.
A high ranked military personnel (probably a Captain) walked towards us and gives the robot a salute –which it quickly returned- before retracting his visor. The Herculean T. Rex looks like in his 30s although I believe he must be 40. “I wanna personally say thank you to you two. I knew that merc will catch a whiff of em' first. So, Jay, what's up?"he said as he gave the Sentry unit a friendly nudge. “Don't worry your cover *clears throat* I mean armour plating is still intact."
“Err...you guys knows each others?" I interrupted.
“Hell yeah! This is Jay. The most badass heavy mech ever existed. Always gets the jobs done."
“Speaking about jobs, where are you guys 5 minutes ago?"
“Don't you watch the news? They've set up some bombs all over the city.
“Capt. Jackson," the robot speaks with an artificial voice, “Today's operation accidently involved this doctor and...a flare gun."
“Doc," he had a quizzical look. “I don't know how you do it. Isn't a flare gun a non lethal weapon? Anyway, the bounty is yours. See ya."
He rushed back into his chopper as I stared at my smart phone in disbelieve. Holy shit, 50k had flown into my bank account! “Wowie!!!" Then, I found myself cheering up and down like a madman beside the robot. A spark that flew from its armour snapped me back to reality.
“Good night, Mr Lynch. Have a happy weekend" it said with its plain monotone robotic tone and went towards his bike. Obviously, bike DO NOT survive 50.cal and I'm not letting HIM walk back home.
“Wait!" I stepped in front of him.
“Denied...It's okay doc. I could fix myself," he said as he picked me up and deposited me on my car.
“But your pilot is bleeding, having a phase of shock and I'm not gonna ever let you WALK all the way back home -especially in a heavy rain." I said as I showed him my smart phone displaying a weather alert.
“H-how do know all that?" he responded. “Are you a recon unit or something?"
“Listen, Mr Obvious. First, you screamed when the whip burned you. I think you probably forgot to turn off your mic inside that suit. Secondly, you're limping. You can never hide your pain from a doctor. Thirdly, I saw your air filter cartridge which is specifically used for breathing...not for cooling system. Lastly, Captain Jackson actually DID blow your cover because; he said the word 'mech' which stands for manned mechanical unit instead of an automated drone...," I sighed. “I'm not a spy. Come on, let me take you home and patch you up. I can't do it in the clinic because I had no one to assist me. Besides, you had saved my life."
“Fine...I'll go with you." He agreed and popped into the car. I smiled when he murmured and muttered under his breath about Jackson's mistake.
