Thought I would try my paw at a "don't judge a book by it's cover story." Plus, I thought it would be cool to do something with an Aye-aye lemur. Enjoy! :)

"Ah-ha! Perfect!" said Lorrie, a young Gray Fox vixen, finishing a sketch she was doing for her art class homework. She was sitting in the tallest tree in the city park, and in early fall, it was starting to get easier to see things without peaking through the branches. Her homework was to draw a scene of conflict, and that's what she did: she sketched a little fender bender that happened. Some otter had crashed his SUV into a leopard's Prius. Lorrie couldn't hear them from so far away, but her dad was deaf, so he showed her how to read lips. And from what she could read, it was a real clash of the left and right.

Just as she put her sketchpad back into her backpack, a familiar voice called out "Hey Lorrie! Get down, we're going to be late for school!" She looked down, it was her best friend, a pudgy raccoon named Jack. "Come on! Come down!"

Lorrie grabbed Jack's backpack and started to dangle it. "Why don't you come up here?" she teased. She has been doing this as a joke since they first met in second grade.

"Oh come on." moaned Jack. "You know I'm bad at climbing!"

"Some raccoon you are then." mocked Lorrie with a grin. Jake sighed and slowly began to scale the trunk of the oak his friend was in. It was hard for him, because he wasn't very good at climbing. He wasn't much of a jock, so it took him a whole minute to get up when it only took Lorrie a few seconds. When he got to the top, he was already breathing heavily. He had a hoodie and some shorts on, but he was panting like he had a parka on in the desert.

"Good for you." said Lorrie, handing the backpack to her friend.

"Thanks." wheezed Jack. "Can we go now?"

Lorrie nodded. She jumped down out of the tree with a perfect landing. She then helped Jack get down. School was only a few blocks away, so they didn't rush. It was their second day of Grade 11, so they knew what classes to go to if they were late. They both shared an art and english class, but Lorrie took gym and wood shop, well Jack had science and drama first semester.

They got there about fifteen minutes before homeroom, so they sat on the bench under a tree in the yard. They talked about their summer vacation; Lorrie was gone most of the summer on vacation with her parents to Ireland, visiting family. In fact, she was wearing the "Kiss me, I'm Irish" shirt she got to school. Jack, meanwhile, went to a theme park a couple of miles outside the city, and went to the beach a few times, but mostly just stayed inside playing Fallout. He was in the middle of trying to explain the plot of New Vegas to Lorrie when the ten minute bell rang.

...

First class they had was art. Jack and Lorrie were the best in the class last year, and it looked like it was going to be a repeat this year. After the bell signalling of the class, the art teacher, a ferret named mr. McNutt called the class's attention. "Everyone, before we begin," he told the class, "we have a new student with us today. Her name is Teri Lane, she moved here from Arizona, and I want you all to be nice to her."

The door opened and Teri walked in. All the student's eyes widened with shock. Teri had thick, silver-black fur, large yellow eyes, a bushy tail and long, skinny fingers. One guy called out in the back "What the hell are you?!" Teri, who at this point looked like she was trying to avoid eye contact with people looked up and said quietly "An Aye-aye. It's a lemur."

"It's a freak of nature, is what it is." the guy whispered to the his friend next to him. They laughed a bit until Lorrie shot them a glare.

...

Later, at lunch, Lorrie and Jack were eating their lunch on the bench. They were talking about their second period classes, when a drop of water fell on Lorrie's brow. She looked up at the clear blue sky. "What are you looking at?" asked Jack. "I thought I felt some rain fall on me." answered Lorrie. She suddenly heard some sniffling comeing from the tree. She climbed the tree and saw Teri there, crying her eyes out.

"Are you alright?" she asked Teri. "Go away." was Teri's response. Lorrie moved next to Teri and patted her on the sholder. "Come on," she urged "it helps to have someone to talk to. Teri folded like a deck of cards "Well, everyone has been so mean to me! Just as I was leaving last class, this one girl push me down to the floor. And-and..." Teri then burst into tears, crying in Lorrie's arms. Lorrie patted her on the back and asked "This girl, was she a kangaroo, bit taller then me, blue fur, wearing jean shorts?"

Teri sniffled "Yes."

"Oh, that's Lynne Stewart. She's a bitch. Don't worry, she might be mean now, but one of these days, someone is going to push her off something really tall." Teri asked "Really?"

"Well, everyone around here as their money on something."

Jack, who had been eavesdropping and eating some of Lorrie's lunch, shouted "I'm betting that she'll be taken to an alien planet, made queen, and then her subjects behead her."

Teri began to dry her tears. Lorrie told her "I've been bullied by her too. I used to cry about it, but now I know how to stand up to her."

"Could you help me?" Teri asked.

"Depends," answered Lorrie, "what class do you have next?" "Gym." answered Teri. "Good, me too. Now, do you want to have lunch with us?" said Lorrie. Teri nodded her head.

...

Later, in the girl's changeroom, Teri and Lorrie were getting ready for gym, changing into their gym uniforms. Lynne Stewart walked by and yelled at Teri "I better tell the teacher your going to be late. It might take a while to change out of that halloween costume!"

Lorrie patted Teri on the back. "Don't worry, I'll take care of this." She ran right up to Lynne and jump kicked her in the butt. "OW!" Lynne cried out, "That hurt, you crazy bitch!" As Lorrie walked back to finish getting changed, she told Lynne said over her shoulder "Sorry, I thought a girl who took it in the ass from every member of the football team could take a little tapping."

Later into the class, they were playing basket ball. Teri and Lorrie were on one team and Lynne was on the other. Halfway through the game, Lorrie heard Lynne tell some of her friends (never doubt the power of canine ears) that she was going to trip Teri. Lorrie ran behind Lynne as she ran toward Teri and clamped her teeth down onto her tail!

"Oww! For fuckin' bitch!" screamed Lynne, which grabbed the attention of the class. Soon, the two girls were in an all out fist fight. The gym teacher, a lioness named Miss. Patterson, broke them apart. "Stop it! OK, who started it?"

Lynne pointed the finger of blam "She bit me on the tail!"

Lorrie snapped back "Well she was going to trip Teri. She's been bullying her all day!" They almost started to fight agian when Miss. Patterson told them "OK, get changed and go to the principal's office. Teri, you go too."

Teri trembled "I-I-I didn't do anything." "I know," the teacher explained, "I just need you to go there to give your side of the story, since they were fighting over you."

...

At the principal's office, Lorrie and Teri were sitting on the couch next to the door. In the office, Lynne was giving her side of the story. "Sorry I got you in trouble." apologized Teri. "It's OK," responded Lorrie, "I got myself into trouble. I was just defending you."

"Yeah, thanks." said Teri, "The only other person who's ever defened me like that is my older brother Zeke."

Lorrie's intrest peaked "Brother? Is he single? Cute? Answer the second question first."

They both shared a giggle as Principal Green (a bloodhound) walked out with Lynne. "OK," he began, "After hearing what the three of you said, I have figured out that both Lorrie and Lynne are at falt. Lorrie, because you started a fight, this means a week of after-school detention." "Yes!" said Lynne, under her breath.

"But," Green continued, "Lynne, since you were also in the fight and bullied Teri here, this means two weeks detention."

" WHAT?!?!?!?" shouted Lynne.

"Well, bullying is agianst the law and we have zero tolerance policy on bullying." explaned Principal Green.

Lynne pulled out a cellphone, and shouted "That's bullshit! My daddy's a lawyer, and I'm going to sue you!"

Green told her "Good. My daughter is a reporter, and I think she will love to find this scoop: Lawyer loses job after sueing school for enforcing law. Family tossed on street." Lynne put her cell back in her pocket. "Also," added Green, "You have to say sorry to Teri."

Lynne growled a bit before flatly telling Teri "I'm sorry." It didn't feel as good as a real apology, but since Lynne was forced to say it, it was almost as good.

"OK," said Green, "I'll see you girls at the end of the day."

...

Later, after school, Lynne stomped out in a huff, giving Lorrie a deadly glare. Outside the school, she saw Teri was waiting. "Teri!" she shouted, "your still here!"

"Yeah," explained Teri. "I called my folks to tell them I'm going to be walking home with a friend."

Lorrie looked left and right, then asked "Where's Jack?"

"Oh, he went to get something. He's been acting weird around me all day. Oh, look, here he comes." Lorrie could see Jack running as fast as his legs could carry him. He stopped in front of the girls, about to faint. He catched his breath and told Teri "I ran to the store and spent all the money I save for slushies on something more important. Here." He handed Teri some flowers and a heart-shaped box of chocolates. Jack looked into Teri's eyes and told her "I love you." Teri answered in kind by hugging him.

"This was worth detention." said Lorrie. And it was.

No Laughing Matter

It was a good day for Jeannette; she was at the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal. This was just what she needed. Her boyfriend, Tom, had left her for some dumb bimbo with implants. Granted, Jeannette wasn't a rocket scientist, but at least she knew...

It was a dark summer night. A Tuesday, I think. My mother was out getting some things in the city. She said she wouldn't be long, but parents, as much as they say that, somehow always end up taking longer. Not that I minded; it was a chance to have so...
