SE-12 The Kings Summit By Darrel James Vanwinkle (Writing as Ratseye) 08/15/2003-11/18/2003

The early August summer breezes made it much warmer than usual in the National Scenic Riverways, and the City of Rocky Falls was in the grip of a heat advisory alert. Jago Fox and Jonie Dreamsea were entertaining Damon Horse and Reed Huxley in a friendly Game of Life. In another part of the mansion, Gotaki Riverclaw and Circe watched onwards as Dominic Bastian Vanlyone spoke to Jansen Tanner, while Shane Wayne and Jo Tanner also awaited within the room.

Jansen glanced around at all the others, then to Dominic again. "What happens to me now?"

Dominic replied, "Now you go back. You will forget all about your journey to this place and you will do your job as I know you will be able to succeed at. Without your efforts then, I cannot exist now. Do you understand?"

Jansen took a breath, then sighed. "Yes, you are right. It's a shame that I can't stay, but I shouldn't be here. I belong in the past. Thank you for saving me. How soon will I forget about this journey?"

Circe now spoke. "Athena has informed me that upon your return to your own time, all of this will be like a dream, and in time, you'll not remember many details about it."

Dominic nodded his head. "It is for the best, Jansen. Although the possibilities of having a twin brother... It's time for you to go now." Dominic concentrated on creating the time gate. The air in the back of the room began to shimmer.

Jansen managed a smile for Jo and Shane. "Jo... I'm sorry I wasn't more honest about my work... Shane... thank you... take care of Dominic for me..." He turned to Dominic and whispered something, then said aloud, "I wish I could team up with you again some day..." He turned and walked into the time gate... and was gone. (To see what happens with him, read his novel, The Chess Master. Otherwise, keep reading for his return appearance.)

Jo stood up. "Dominic, you've been dead twice, are literally a white stag in spirit, and are so far gone from being my brother... I really enjoyed working side-by-side with Jansen. I too wish I could work with him again. Anyway, I have horses to take care of. Call me if you need me again." Jo headed out of the room.

Shane got up now and walked over to Dominic. "You're a good friend, Dominic. I got to work with both Jansen and Dominic. Two for the price of one. Who could offer more? Richard will be needing me, so until next time... chin up and walk the divided path. You are living for two, after all." Shane then left the room.

Dominic sighed. "Why do I feel like I've killed myself?"

Gotaki walked over and hugged Dominic. "Jansen lives through your efforts, King Lion. But for now, you live and your stomach craves a meal."

Dominic smiled at Gotaki. "I am always King Lion to you, am I?"

Gotaki grinned. "Physically, I see a man, but spiritually, I see a lion. Your aura does not lie. Come now, we feed the stalking lion."

Dominic glanced to Circe. "What will become of Hogan Slade?"

Circe smiled and replied, "He made the mistake of trying to shoot me on my island. He will remain as a chipmunk for the rest of his days. With no chance of parole."

Dominic couldn't help but to smile. "Eternal imprisonment on your island."

Circe hummed. "What concerns me more is the fact that you took the fatal bullet meant for Jansen. I think that surprised everyone."

Gotaki grinned. "I think Hogan was even more shocked when Dominic shape changed into his great white lion form."

Dominic irked, not liking to be reminded of that. "Unfortunately, I don't remember what happened between my being shot and awakening later on the boat."

Circe sighed, "According to Athena, you were slain, Dominic."

Dominic blinked his eyes. "Slain? Then who resurrected me?"

Circe replied, "The Egyptian sun god Ra revived you. An explanation on why he intervened has not been provided yet."

Gotaki grinned again. "Again the legend of King Lion ascends time and space."

Dominic's stomach chose this moment to growl, and Dominic blushed accordingly. "I believe we should seek a meal now. That inner lion has spoken again."

In the kitchen, Artemis and Blackstone Springfield prepared dinner for the household crew. The table was soon served, and Blackstone gave Dominic a goodbye kiss before vanishing in a flash of hell-like light and brimstone smoke. Dominic almost wished Blackstone wouldn't do that, but it was more of a signature affect for the female demonic caterer from San Francisco, California.

Reed smiled at Dominic as they ate. "Ya know, mate... it's almost like family 'round 'ere."

Dominic smiled. "Thank you, Reed. The only bit of normalcy I can get is having all of you around me. Especially for a meal like dinner."

Devyn, the Fifth Circle hellhound beast, chose this moment to enter the dining area and plop down next to Dominic. "I missed you, Master Dominic." Dominic felt the beast nuzzling his leg.

Damon chuckled. "I was wondering when Devyn would come out of the master bedroom."

Reed smiled at Dominic again. "Now... it's just like family."

Jago smirked. "A regular Kodak moment."

The white stag suddenly appeared in the dining room next to Dominic. "No pictures please. -=Now=- it is just like family." The white stag nuzzled Dominic's chest.

Dominic was mildly surprised. "Gee, I'm honored that you came merely to be counted as a family member, my white cervine friend."

The white stag raised his gaze to Dominic's face. "I wish I could say that my visit was merely that... but it isn't. I am here on business."

Dominic hugged his cervine friend. "It's okay. Rare is the moment when I get to spend even a little time with you. I would hope you would stay for an hour or so, minimum... anyway... what business brings you to me this evening?"

The white stag replies, "A request from an old friend of yours, Dominic. You are being asked by King Bighorn to attend a gathering of furry kings... though not as King Lion, as Gotaki calls you, but as a protector of the very gathering. There are those who would seek harm upon these kings. Will you accept King Bighorn's request?"

Dominic continued to scritch the white stag and Devyn. "I just barely returned from handling Chronos' mission, my friend, but it is true that I cannot turn down a request from my friend, King Bighorn in the Furry Realms. He did knight me, and I still owe him for that honor."

The white stag exclaims, "Dominic... I know you died again... and while I consider you to be more than a brother and friend, I know that the lion within you cannot rest as he is now... so effective immediately... I, the white stag, hereby release you from our contract... though... I still regard you as being my closest friend and companion... my home will always be open to you, Dominic. You need your freedom to continue to protect this world and worlds beyond without being enslaved under a contract that you and I have held for over four years now."

Dominic is startled by this announcement. "You're releasing me? Am I no longer your agent?"

The white stag nuzzles Dominic again. "You are to me as Reed and others are to me. A very good friend that I have grown very fond of. You have done everything that I have ever asked. Now I give you release from our contract. You can choose to aid me when I ask rather than be forced to do so. I fear that if you die a third time... I will lose you forever..."

Artemis spoke up now. "If he dies a third time? What kind of talk is that? Were you given a vision concerning Dominic's life?"

The white stag nodded his head a little. "In the vision, he who serves as my agent would die in the next few days. So I have released Dominic from that obligation so death does not visit him as a result of the vision I was given."

Dominic's eyes go wide. "So you're arranging for my life to be spared from this death thing. I do appreciate that, but... if your vision specifically showed me dying, then it will be me regardless if I am your agent or not."

The white stag replied, "I know... but I want you to be free when it comes."

Dominic kissed his cervine friend on the muzzle. "Thank you. After dinner, there will be preparations to be made... but I will not attend to King Bighorn until the morning. I haven't had a chance to rest since getting back from Chronos' Cavern of Time."

The white stag lick-slurped Dominic's mouth in return. "I will tell him you have accepted his offer and will arrive in the morning." The white stag then stepped back and was gone from the room.

Dominic glanced around to everyone. "Rules are as per usual. Whoever wants to accompany me this time may do so. Just make sure you're all ready by morning." He got up and tagged Devyn. "TAG! You're it!" Dominic RAN out of the dining room at top speed!

Devyn grinned. "I -=LOVE=- the chase! Besides, I know where he's going..." Devyn padded off at a near gallop after Dominic.

Jonie giggled, as Jago exclaimed, "I may have to get me a companion..."

Damon grinned at Jago. "I know where hundreds more are."

The next morning, Dominic awoke with Devyn sleeping right beside him in bed. Dominic smiled, and tried to get out of bed without waking Devyn, but... a heavy hellhound paw was instantly upon him.

Devyn grinned. "Where you going, master Dominic?"

Dominic turned to Devyn and kissed the hellhound's nose. "I have to get ready to go serve King Bighorn. Want to come with me this time?"

Devyn grinned. "May I?"

Dominic nodded his head. "Of course. Every good knight needs a good hunting hound, well, hellhound."

Devyn removed his paw. "Okay. Take your shower."

Dominic smiled and headed into the bathroom, closing the door.

Devyn likewise got up and headed out into the upstairs hallway. As he was padding down the corridor, Devyn noticed that Jago's door was slightly ajar.

Devyn poked his nose into the bedroom. Jago was inside, nude, and doing push-ups at the foot of the bed. Devyn padded inside and pressed his hot wet nose to Jago's inner thigh. "Boo."

Jago immediately hollared and jumped over the whole bed! He slowly peeked over the edge of the bed, eyes wide, and his heart in his throat.

Devyn sat there, head tilted to one side and tongue hanging out. "Morning Jago."

Jago slowly returned to his morning exercises, resuming his push ups. "Devyn. I about aged 40 years. I thought you stayed near Dominic."

Devyn grinned. "I have full run of the mansion, Jago. I will be coming along on the trip this time. Dominic said I could."

Jago nodded his head briefly. "Would you be terribly upset if I got myself a companion like you for my room?"

Devyn made a face, then chuckled. "Like me? You think you could take that kind of stress early on?"

Jago sighed. "Well, I've noticed how happy Dominic is when he gets to spend time with you. So I figured I'd think about getting a companion of my own."

Devyn grinned. "You better talk to Damon in extreme detail about that before you fully decide about getting a hellhound companion like me. I like you and would hate to see you or one of my brothers be hurt by a poor companionship."

Jago hummed. "So there is a lot of work involved with having a companion?"

Devyn thought on that for a moment. "You'd have to let the pack sniff you and play with you first. Dominic went through it three times." He sniffed the air. "Damon is preparing breakfast."

Jago hummed. "I'm just a video game designer. I probably wouldn't make the grade for a good companion."

Devyn hmphed and slapped Jago's rear, hard, with one paw!

Jago hit the floor with a thump! "Ow!"

Devyn exclaimed, "With that attitude, Jago, getting a hellhound companion is a pointless task. Maybe hellmice are more your speed. When you get more serious about hellhound companions, come talk to me and Damon. Until then, get your clothes on. You're tempting me." He grinned.

Jago sighed and got up into a sitting position. He muttered, "...sorry..."

Devyn winced and turned to look at Jago again. "Why do you want a companion anyway?"

Jago replied, "It just feels like something is missing in my life."

Devyn licked Jago's face. "Chin up, Jago. Just remember: Dominic has earned everything he has. Me included. He earned me. Now get your clothes on. Unless you want to be sore for other reasons."

Devyn was up and padding out of the room before Jago could ask what Devyn meant.

Jago chuckled and proceeded to get dressed. He found that his rear hurt still from where he had been paw-slapped by Devyn. "Man, that's sore." He pulled on his hiking shoes, then headed on downstairs to see what everyone else was up to.

Damon was, of course, preparing breakfast in the kitchen. Devyn was not in sight. Jonie had evidently not come down yet, either. It was odd that even Reed Huxley had not poked his cute and handsome self in this morning.

Jago approached Damon slowly. "Morning."

Damon didn't turn around, but said, "Devyn told me what happened this morning. Want to talk about it?" He flipped some pancakes in the pan.

Jago sighed and sat down near Damon. "Remember how I said I might get a companion? Well, I've been considering it. But... Devyn made it sound like that in order to prove myself, I'd most likely fail in trying to earn a companion. He didn't say that exactly, but that's how it came across... I don't know... Should I just forget about it or what?"

Damon glanced to Jago and grinned. "If you forget about it, you'll berate yourself for the rest of your life. Jago... You're one of Dominic's strongest companions. That's right. I said that you're a companion. So am I. So is everyone who's ever teamed up with him. We're all companions. But we're -=his=- companions. Now... you're talking about gaining your -=own=- companions. In order to do that, you need a mission or adventure of your own. And during this adventure, you'll earn your own companions. Maybe recently made friends, maybe new ones... and yes, maybe even a sexy hellhound like Devyn. But you won't know until you try. If you give up now, you'll never earn one." Damon shuffled the food, and flipped and poured more pancakes.

Jago lifted his head and managed a smile. "Do you think so, Damon?"

Damon grinned. "I know so. I didn't earn my military title back in Agassia by refusing missions and tasks. I had to try. I preferred being in the thick of things. I loved every challenge. I wish you could've been there, Jago. I think you would've LOVED it. I know I did. And every mission I had would surely give you new ideas for video games. Yes, those were the days, to be certain." He hugged Jago and gave him a nuzzle.

Jago smiled and hugged back. "You make it sound so wonderful. Maybe I should have been there. When is the next time you and I can do something like that?"

Damon chuckled. "Let's get the current mission out of the way first before we think about any new endeavors. I like you, Jago."

Crash!

"Joseph!! Ah warned ya ta be careful!"

"Ah'll clean it up, Unca Reed."

Reed growled, "Ya've done enough! Go to yer room! Now!!"

Joseph sniffled, sobbing, as he is slowly no longer heard.

Damon glanced at Jago. "Reed is having nephew problems. His brother sent him a kid who is going through his first lycanthropy changes. As you've heard, the kid is a little clumsy."

Jago blinked his eyes. "I've never heard Reed so angry before. I'm going to assume that Reed is in a very bad mood currently."

Damon sighed. "The boy really can't help his clumsiness. Plus, he's scared. He doesn't have any friends in the United States. And Reed keeps igniting every time Joseph breaks something. Not like Reed ever broke anything..."

Reed suddenly growled, "Ah 'eard that!"

Damon growled back. "You were -meant- to hear it!"

Jago kept quiet. The last thing he needed was getting between an angry werekangaroo and a heated demon horse.

Dominic and Jonie came into the kitchen at this moment and Dominic went straight to the refrigerator, and pulled out a bottle of V8 Juice. Dominic then headed off into his den to fetch his armor and weapons.

Jonie smiled and grabbed a plate and filled it with pancakes and eggs. She put that on the dining table, then fetched a glass of milk. She sat at the dining table and began eating.

Suddenly, the mansion's doorbell chimed. Jago thought it best to get that himself. Anything to get away from the heated friends. Jago got to the door and opened it.

Standing there was Faroth Planes Walker. Faroth, now seventeen years old, was lean with a muscular build. He had spiked bright orange hair and bright sky blue eyes. His tanned skin had not changed from his last appearance in this household. He wore a tight, tank-top blue shirt and blue-jean shorts, revealing his defined calves. He also wore hiking boots. He tilted his head when he saw Jago. "Who are you? Is this the Vanlyone mansion still?"

Jago smiled. "I am Jago Fox, co-owner of Morphis Software, and yes, this is Dominic's mansion."

Faroth sighed in relief "I am Faroth Walker, Black Rook of Chess. Dominic arranged for me to attend the Special Forces Academy in Athens. I just got back and wanted to stop in and say hello. Is Dominic here?"

Jago grinned. "Come on in. He's in the den putting his knightly armor on. He has another adventure beginning, but I'll let him tell it."

Jago led Faroth through the mansion, past the kitchen, and finally into the den.

Dominic had his armor on and was putting the finishing touches on his sword, belt and magical rings. He smiled to both Jago and Faroth when they entered. "Morning Jago. Hello Faroth. Have a seat while I finish getting ready."

Faroth smiled and sat in Dominic's usual chair. "You look very shiny in that get up. What's the occasion? Jago said you had a new adventure."

Dominic smirked. "I have to attend a kings summit in the furry realms, as their head of security. And I may take others along with me, as usual."

Faroth grinned. "May I come along? I am a Black Rook currently, and some in the field practicing would be a huge help for me. Please?"

Dominic replied, "I just said that anyone can come along. Was the academy hard for you?"

Faroth smirked. "If you hadn't prepaid all my expenses to go there, I wouldn't have went. Yeah, it was hard. The instructor was fair, I guess, but they all made it seem more grueling than it had to be. And the finishing exams in the field were the toughest, but I'm not one to give up so easily. I and four others were the only ones to graduate this year. If I hadn't made some new friends over there, I'd be very mad at you, but all in all, I had some fun. -And- I am legally registered to own and use firearms. That's always a plus. Not that I hope to use them."

Jago and Dominic chuckled together.

Devyn chose this moment to pad into the den, followed closely by Damon wearing his demon General uniform. Gotaki emerged from her dark corner wearing the finest shadow warrior outfit anyone has seen her wear since knowing her.

Gotaki bowed and smiled. "I am prepared, King Lion. When do we go?"

Dominic smiled and bowed in return. "I am honored that you are dressed so exotically, Gotaki Riverclaw. I was giving everyone a chance to arrive who would be going. By the way, Gotaki, this is Faroth Walker, an old friend of Shane's. He will be coming with us this time."

Gotaki glanced to Faroth and bowed. "A friend of Shane's is welcome in my presence. Be not surprised if you do not see me very often once we are there. My sole concern is to King Lion." She indicated Dominic with an obvious nod of her head.

Dominic smiled. "Everyone. Follow me." Dominic began leading everyone through the stone portal to Bighorn Castle in the Wind River Wilderness.

Long had it been since Dominic had walked the corridors of Castle Bighorn. The last time he had been here, the kingdom had been at war with evil monsters. The Token of Earth was his acquired prize, though he wore the Token Bracers as a momento from that time. Then, Dominic noticed King Bighorn having breakfast at his royal dining table. Seated with him was his wife, the queen, as well as a very familiar male ottermorph who was currently in his late twenties. Dominic smiled upon laying eyes on his otter compatriot.

"Rab Streambattle! It's been months. How are you?"

Rab grinned up at Dominic and hugged him tightly. "Dominic! I am very pleased to see you again. Brand and Garla told me that they had helped you merely days ago. And now, I get to see you again." Rab nuzzled Dominic's face.

Dominic smiled again and nuzzled back. "Any chance I get to work beside my favorite adventurer is always a journey well made."

King Bighorn grinned. "Sir Dominic. It is good that you accepted my offer. It pleases me that you could come. I must admit, I was worried that you would bow out."

Dominic bowed to King Bighorn, then again to Queen Bighorn, and adding a kiss to the queen's paw. "How could I turn down a request from the liege who knighted me? It is my honor to attend to your needs, regardless of how tired I may be."

Rab, in the meantime, was greeting the others of whom he knew from before, and introducing himself to Devyn and Faroth, whom Rab did not know.

Dominic asked, "Where is the king's summit to be held? Surely not -here- in your small castle. Pardon me for saying, but there isn't room for that many people here and not present a tempting target for some evil knave."

Queen Bighorn chose to answer this query. "The summit is to be held at the Sunset View Palace in the Kingdom of Lutraon. Rab's original liege, we are told. That is why Rab is with us now. He is going to be helping you to escort us to Lutraon's Palace."

Rab cringed slightly at the mention of his former liege. Damon took notice of this reaction, yet said nothing. Now was not the time to pursue the subject.

King Bighorn added, "And you are correct in assuming that this many kings and queens together might provoke a crafty knave to attempt harm upon any one of us. This is why I had your white cervine friend seek you out. I can rest assured that you, Sir Dominic, will not allow anything bad to befall any of those in attendance at the summit."

Dominic blushed slightly at the praise. "I will do my best, King Bighorn, although... to allot sole responsibility on me is presumptuous, to assume that I will be able to keep all safe." To himself he mentally added, (Especially when I am the one in bodily danger from death...)

After breakfast ended, the king and queen proceeded off to gather their things for the trip. Damon brought Rab's reaction to Dominic's attention, and the two pulled Rab into a side parlor to speak about what the otter's problem might be.

Rab fidgeted as he paced in the parlor. "It is really not a big deal, Dominic. It's just that... King Lutraon was not exactly pleased that I chose the role of adventurer instead of joining his elite knightly troops. Being in an army has never been my way. Had I done as he asked then... you'd likely be dead now, Dominic... if we hadn't been there some years ago to find you in the wilderness, and escort you to the Wizard's Spire... you'd have been trapped as a horse to this day... a permanent guest of the equipixie..."

Dominic hummed, remembering that episode quite well. He did indeed owe Rab much for saving him. Rab had opted to let it pass then, yet now, the honor of owing Rab still held dear to his heart. The otter had a definable point. Adventuring was the otter's way.

Dominic patted Rab's shoulder. "Forgive me for prying into your past, Rab. Your way is your way. If you had been anything else, a lot of good then would not be done now. Your liege should be pleased with your successes, not disappointed. But let me guess: you've never been home since becoming an adventurer. Right?"

Rab glanced up at Dominic. "Yeah. And going home now... is more scary than any monster we've ever faced in the field. I have to admit, I am afraid."

Damon grinned. "Then let that fear feul your motivation for succeeding, not force you to cower and act as a child who has done wrong. I have seen you in the field, Rab, and it is nothing to be ashamed of. A finer leader could not have been trained. By a king nor an instructor. That which you've become should makes you stride tall, not cringe behind another's back. When your liege lays eyes on you, he should see an otter of importance, not a timid squire to be shaped."

Rab hummed. "Yes, you're right. I've really done nothing wrong. And every life I've touched in my adventures has benefitted from the aid I have given them." He smiled and did seem to appear taller in spirit. "The good I've done has certainly outweighed the misdeeds of my youth or any disagreement that I may have had back home with my fath... um, my liege..."

Both Damon and Dominic arched their eyes at the slip of the otter's tongue.

Rab blushed hard when he realized how keen his companions always were at discovering thing. "Please... don't repeat what you know to anyone else... especially not to Huckleberry or I'll never hear the end of it. Please... not a word more about this..."

Dominic looked at Damon, as Rab headed out of the parlor.

Damon tilted his head, and pondered aloud. "The otter was a prince? I could possibly see that. I had not expected it, but I can definitely see it. Leaders are hard to come by, after all."

Elsewhere in the walled castletown of Klondike, Jago and Faroth were out for a short walk before the actual trip was to begin. The two glanced over the open markets and the silversmith's wares for awhile before finally entering the Tavern of the Flocking Panther.

The Inn and Tavern of the Flocking Panther was found to be a humble establishment with a floor of marble and ten foot high roof beams to admit the frames of larger patrons. A marble bar was situated to one side, a young goat lad tended to the requests from patrons and saw to the washing of the tavern's mugs. Many round tables were scattered about the common room, some were occupied by local furs discussing battles, playing games, or simply enjoying the homemade cuisine. Set in the northeast corner of the tavern was a huge fireplace made of polished red marble. It was evident that during some nights, a warm fire could be burning here, providing warmth to the tavern. A small cord of wood was stacked beside the fireplace. An open doorway nearest to the bar led to the tavern's gaming hall. To the other side of the bar, a counter was stationed with another young goat lad, running the inn portion of the tavern. A stairway on the other side of the counter climbed upwards to the noticeable balcony as well as the inn rooms. The sun casted shadows of varying angles across the walls, giving it an air of calming pleasure, yet provided a feeling or mystery, as well. The tavern was filled with the scents of food and ale as the barkeep, an adult male panther, and several female young goats who could be seen from time to time through the kitchen doorway, prepared for the evening crowd who would certainly arrive later on, in addition to making sure his regulars were well taken care of.

The barkeep smiled over at Jago and Faroth when they entered, saying, "Make yourself comfortable, friends, and enjoy some homemade ale."

Sitting at a table alone, a tall, slender red fox guardsman waved for Jago and Faroth to join him. When they got closer, he said, "Greetings. I am Sir Alec, Klondike Town's sheriff. Please sit and join me for a meal and some ale. I like to get to know all newcomers to Klondike."

Jago sat with a smile, "Thank you, Sir Alec."

Faroth remained standing and said, "Pardon me while I inspect our surroundings. Sir Dominic would be disappointed if we both let our guard down." Faroth walked away, checking out the rest of the establishment.

Jago was mildly annoyed by Faroth's attitude, but dismissed it in favor of checking out his host. Sir Alec was apparently, on average, about five foot seven inches tall, and perhaps weighed about 135 pounds, though he might've weighed more given the fact that he was having what appeared to be a very large breakfast. Alec's eyes were hazel-grey in color, while his coat was the typical red fur for his species. His chin, chest and the bottom side of his tail were an off-white. Alec's paws and footpads were covered in black fur. He currently wore a tan long-sleeved cloth tunic, and over that, a black lizard-scale vest and black lizard-scale belt. He also wore brown pants to his knees, and had padded, black lizard-scale knee-high boots on his footpads. On his belt, a knightly sword was scabbarded, while on the other side, a simple dagger made it's home. The belt itself was fastened together by a golden buckle, the crest of Bighorn emblazoned on it's front. Alec smiled as he likewise checked out his human guest.

Jago was nowhere near as impressively dressed as Alec was. Jago Fox was currently about six foot three inches tall, weighing about 235 pounds. Jago had short brown hair, brown eyes, and slightly tanned skin, from all the outings he had accomplished with Dominic. Jago wore a white t-shirt under a navy blue company jacket with the Morphis Software logo sewn into it's back, and a smaller logo on the left chest. The jacket had both a zipper as well as silver-colored cufflinks. He wore blue jeans with a brown leather belt, and had white socks under his blue, black and white tennis shoes. Jago knew he had his small pocket knife in his right pocket, as well as a plastic comb. But otherwise, Jago had no weapons nor armor to make him special or noticeable to any casual observor.

Alec hummed. "Your uniform and crest of arms are unknown to me. Yet, you hold yourself quite well within our fair kingdom. May I ask your name?"

Jago smiled. "I am Jago Fox, owner of Morphis Software on Earth. I am one of Sir Dominic's traveling companions. And while my jacket is a form of uniform, the crest, as you call it, is merely the advertising picture of my owned business. We focus on studying transformation, in all of it's forms."

Alec smiled back, sipping his ale. "You travel without weapons?"

Jago sighed. "I really haven't learned to use any weapons. Been afraid to ask anyone to give me instruction. I am not as fine as Sir Dominic is... Therefore... I am content to let others fight..."

Alec patted Jago's shoulder. "You just haven't found the weapon of your calling yet. Even sages and magic-users make use of the quarterstaff during their travels. And all a quarterstaff is... is a large thick shaft of wood from the forest. But if you had someone to help you learn... would you try to learn a weapon?"

Jago hummed. This fox was certainly -trying- hard to get Jago interested in weapons. Plus, the fox -was- kind of handsome... pleasing to the eye. Jago only wondered what the catch was...

Alec ordered some food and ale for Jago, while waiting for Jago to respond to his question.

The barkeep had one of the cute goat boys bring the food to Jago's table, and also, bring the mug of ale, as well. The goat boy kissed Jago on the cheek and hugged him. Jago was a little surprised by this, but not as surprised as he was when he felt 'something' being pushed into his pants pocket. The goat boy bowed and backed away to resume his assigned job.

Jago looked to Alec and said, "Were the proper teacher available, I might pursue the learning, but not so much as to learn to become dangerous to others." Jago stood up. "I need to relieve myself. Where do I go do it at?"

After getting directions from Alec, Jago entered the outhouse, closing the door behind him. He pulled down his pants and sat down, then pulled the 'something' out of his pocket. It was a note, folded over, with a gold coin. Jago blinked his eyes at the coin then opened the note.

The note read:

"Kind sir.

There are not many a person could trust in our world and time, but I need your aid, for you seem to be heading to a great city of trade and commerce. My mother is ill and needs a certain medicine. I am not sure what it is called, but my mother told me of the ingrediants.

She said that it was one part powdered garlic, one part ground kelp, two parts ground cinnamon, one part corn syrup, two parts liquid caramel, three parts mule wing dust and stirred vigouressly counterclockwise with a glowing platinum ladle.

The coin I have given you isn't much and likely will not pay for the medicine, but it is all I have. It was given to me by a traveling lord who I was forced to sexually please one evening long ago. I give you this gold coin as payment for making the journey in my steed.

Time is short and no one else has appealed to me. I need your aid in succeeding in this endeavor. My mother means everything to me and if you require it, I will bow down and let you use me as the traveling lord used me. But I beg you to retrieve the medicine for my mother.

I cannot beg more. You are a busy person. Please make this journey for me. My mother's life will be in your paws and my services as a temporary slave will be yours, as well, in payment. I cannot trust no other. You are the one I have made the offer to.

When you return with the medicine, ask the barkeep to see Terlop. That is me.

Please do this for me.

Terlop Servantile Meadboy."

Jago re-read the note again as he finished his business. Then, he cleaned himself as best as possible and redressed. Jago picked up the note and coin once again. "I've been en quested, looks like... and I thought these things only happened in our video games. Poor kid."

Jago repocketed the note and coin and re-entered the tavern, sitting at Alec's table once again. By now, Faroth had returned and was sitting at the table, as well, chatting with Alec about law enforcement methods and criminal tricks. Jago simply sat and slowly finished his meal, while occasionally, and casually glancing around to see if he could see this "Terlop" working.

Jago finally got a glimpse of Terlop peeking out of the kitchen. He was wearing an apron and cleaning a drinking mug. His eyes seemed to beg for Jago to make the trip. For Terlop's mother. Jago quietly sighed and slowly nodded his head softly. Terlop seemed to smile a little, then he retreated into the kitchen. Jago hummed to himself, thinking, (Dominic is simply not going to believe this. I can scarcely believe it myself. I hope he understands that I have to do it.)

Finally, Faroth and Jago headed back to the castle to rejoin Dominic and the royal entourage. They arrived in time to be given positions with the party. Their steeds appeared to be some form of half horse and half dragon-like quadrupeds, large, well-trained and obediant to the rider's wishes. But there seemed to be some intelligence there, as well. But what ever spark of knowledge these steeds possessed, they never publicly voiced their thoughts.

Jago urged his steed closer to Dominic's steed and quietly told him about the mini-mission he was given from Terlop at the tavern.

Dominic hummed, then turned to Jago and said, "Well, if you kept the coin, then you have to do it. Just remember that your actions in this world represent the human race. You are just one ambassador of your people in this world. Therefore, I expect you to complete the task, to the best of your ability. If you need extra gold, I will help provide it. I am King Bighorn's knight, after all, so I do have monetary funds for this world."

Jago frowned, then said, "I don't like the idea of someone having to be a slave to pay for a needed service. The boy offered himself to me to -use- in exchange for payment. I can't do that..."

Dominic looked at Jago again. "You may not like it, but this isn't our world. Slavery is legal here, still. If someone cannot afford payment for a service and they are too young to work in a real job, like most medieval jobs of this world, then becoming a slave is their only logical course of action. True, they surrender their freedom, but if it helps the one they love then they will always believe that they have made the right choice. I've seen it time and time again. And I too have had thoughts similar to yours on the subject, but I also know that I am not a king in this world. I am a knight. And a knight serves the king. And whatever the king decides... is the law. And as his knight, you will not break these laws, even if you disagree with them. You don't have to keep quiet in your opinions of these laws, but it is better to voice your opinions to the king, instead of causing a rebellion behind his back."

Jago can't help but to smile at Dominic's words. "You sound like a crusader, Dominic. Just like Sir Oswald in our Daysome Knight video game that Jonie and I released last year." He sighed then looked to Dominic again. "You're right, of course. I may not like it, but I am now wrapped up in the workings of a portion of this world by accepting this task. Do you think I acted foolishly?"

Dominic grinned at Jago. "Damon told me you wanted companions. I think this is but one quest that will earn you friends outside the mansion's circle and possibly, companions who will be willing to work with you during future missions. But you won't know until you at least -try- to succeed in this mini-mission. Plus, you kept the gold coin. But in your heart that coin belongs to Terlop; not you. So, I know that in the end, you'll repay Terlop with a similar gold coin and many more, if you have anything to say about it. I think you acted rationally. And... I think you like Terlop." Dominic winked at Jago, then smiled.

Jago grinned back. "I do like Terlop. He's cute, kind of dashing," Jago blushed a little, "a good kisser and is trusting me to get the medicine for his mom."

The entourage continued slowly on into the late afternoon without incident. The scenery was pleasant, many a river folk were seen along the riverside road leading westwards. Jago was still thinking about his now official task. He was kind of lost on what to do. He didn't know this world like Dominic did. As he rode quietly, Rab Streambattle quietly urged his steed beside Jago's steed. Rab could tell that something was weighing heavily on the human's mind.

Rab quietly remarked, "If a yawning pit appeared before us right now, you'd ride right off into the middle of it. Whatcha thinking about, Jago?"

Jago smiled at Rab and repeated his accepted task to Rab. "...and I am not sure how I am going to do this. I don't know this world like Dominic does. I'm still new to this."

Rab hummed. "Well... as you may have guessed, I am not exactly thrilled about having to go to my home kingdom with the royal party of Klondike. Though... I can offer my services to you as a guide, under the guise that you hired me as an escort. Because of my honor, King Bighorn would allow me to go with you, once we had delivered the royal entourage into Lutraon. I am not wanting to greet King Lutraon at all, if it can be avoided. I have my reasons, as I have already told Dominic. Would you accept my aid in this quest of yours?" He smiled, and gave a classic puppy dog look, combined with Bambi eyes!

Jago cringed a little when he saw Rab doing that. "If you really want to help me, I'll accept your aid. But under one condition..."

Rab asked, "What's the condition?"

Jago turned to Rab. "You have to at least tell your mom that you're back and what you'll be doing while there."

Rab irked and blushed darkly. "...you would ask that..."

Jago looked at Rab out the corner of his eye. "I'm not stupid, Rab. Even I have guessed that your parents are the King and Queen of Lutraon. And if you refuse to see your father, then you owe an explanation to your mother, at least. Deal or not?"

Rab sighed. This Jago Fox was smarter than he thought. Acts like a fox too. "Okay... I'll greet my mother... I don't have to like it, but I'll do it... we have a deal..."

Jago was pleased when Rab pulled his steed away from his own steed. Jago closed his eyes and silently shook his head. (Rab was trying to find a quick way out of having to greet his parents. But I couldn't become party to that... Dominic is right; we are ambassadors to human kind in this world... but Rab is more Dominic's companion. Not mine... Rab is likely offering to help me because Dominic asked him to help me... to keep an eye on me...) Jago sighed and opened his eyes, reaching forth to gently pet and caress his steed's scaley neck. He gazed around at the surroundings as they traveled westwards. More and more urban sights were appearing along side the road. -Civilization; bleh,- as Brand Irondam would say. Jago smiled, remembering the scout.

Sunset Cove proved to be a massive city surrounding the peninsula home of the Sunset View Palace. Rab's native home. It was pretty colorful and exciting to Jago, but to Rab, it was an enslaved return to an old family argument that he had been avoiding for ages. They were indeed on the west coast of the Furry Realms continent. Jago saw many citizens of otter, beaver, crustacean, sea gull, dolphin, and seawolf variety in many places as the entourage traveled through the main avenue towards the palace. Dominic and many of the others waved to the cheering citizens, yet Rab, Jago and Faroth tried to retain as low a profile as possible during this time. Rab's reasons were obvious. He hated being here. Faroth's reasons were that he was trying to keep his focus on any would-be assassins in the crowd. Jago was simply more focused on Terlop's request. Plus, Jago was near asleep on the dragonsteed.

Jago's steed could see that Jago was exhausted, so he sped up and trotted on ahead of the entourage to the palace. Once there, the dragonsteed entered the palace stables, and entered an available dragonsteed apartment. He carefully deposited Jago unto the thick soft hay in the apartment, then lay himself down near Jago, guarding him while he slept.

The rest of the entourage soon entered the palace, and, as was customary for knights to do, Dominic escorted King and Queen Bighorn deeply into the palace to greet King Lutraon more properly within his throne chambers. Introductions were made and the entourage was introduced by name. Dominic noticed that Rab had somehow ditched the entourage and was not here. He mentally smiled at that, and told the king of his friend Jago, who was likely sleeping off the journey under the protective watch of his dragonsteed. King Lutraon nodded his head, then cleared the floor for the next arriving kingdom's royal entourage.

Rab quietly made his way through the palace, using methods taught to him from Brand Irondam to avoid detection. He soon found his mother in one of the internal gardens. Rab gulped quietly, dreading having to do this. He didn't want to be here. But he promised Jago that he would.

Rab approached quietly, then stopped. "Ahem..."

Rab's mother slowly glanced up and her eyes opened widely.

Standing before her was her son, Rab Lutraon. Rab, a male otter, appeared to be in his late twenties, looked to be about five foot eight inches tall, and weighed about 150 pounds, although being slim in build. Unlike most otters, he had long glossy black hair, pulled back tight over his head, tied with a single braid running down to his mid shoulder. His fur color was a dark chocolate, with white fur covering his chest and stomach. He wore an evergreen tunic, "V"-necked, one which was donned by slipping it over the head. Around his waist, he wore a black komodo leather belt, about an inch thick, with an intricate weaving of metal serving as a buckle. Strapped to his back, in cross sheaths, were twin katanas, one black, the other white, with the ends of the hilts each fashioned to form one half of the Yin and the Yang. "Hello mother. I have returned."

Queen Lutraon stood up and hugged Rab gently, at first, then tightly... kissing his whiskers and cheeks, while petting and stroking over the one she thought would never return.

It wasn't until the next morning when Jago awakened. He felt embarrassed that he missed greeting King Lutraon with the others, but he had been so exhausted from the trip, that it surely could not have been avoided. He sat up with a sigh and turned his head to his left. There was a small table of food and drink sitting there. On the other side of the table sat Gotaki Riverclaw.

Gotaki smiled at Jago. Jago could see that she wasn't wearing her hood, for a change. He smiled back and sat at the table with her.

Gotaki poured Jago some watered mead into a brass mug. "Eat up, Jago. King Lion asked me to make sure you were well fed and safe."

Jago couldn't help studying the female ninja without her shadow garb.

Gotaki Riverclaw, a female wolfmorph furry, was unusual in appearance from other female wolves of her stature. She had a mane of long black fur-like hair, and had the most beautiful sapphire eyes. Her teeth were pearly-white, and quite sharp, while her claws were likewise sharp, able to pierce most soft materials at a whim. Her overall fur was black, though her chest and stomach were colored like that of a rusty-red fox. She dressed in the silvery-black priestly garb of Noktyrni, Lord of Shadows. Her multiple breasts showed through the silky fabric of her darkly colored blouse. If she had any weapons with her, none could be detected at all. She wore a black komodo belt around her waist, supporting her silken skirt. Her legs were covered by dark silken leggings, and her footpads were likewise encased in padded silk boots. She wore no gloves, currently, though such were never far away if she required them, as was the full facial hood she often wore during missions with King Lion (Dominic Vanlyone), who she served unswervingly.

Jago commented politely on Gotaki's appearance. Gotaki seemed to blush a little. She was blushing! Jago was starting to get worried. He'd never seen her blush before. Of course, no one had ever seen her without her ninja garb either. Such an appearance was supposedly reserved for her chosen mate to be, which he hoped, was not him.

Jago asked, "I thought no one was supposed to see you without your hood. No one save your chosen mate to be. Why are you unmasked now?"

Gotaki smiled to Jago. "Your aura suggests that you are a wolf, as I am a wolf. And while I am not interested in you as a mate, chosen or otherwise, you do strike me as a gentile brother, and perhaps wolf-in-spirit. Someone I can be open with. It is rare that anyone makes me feel so feminine, Jago Fox."

It was Jago's turn to blush, and he did so! Gotaki merely smiled and gingerly ate breakfast with Jago. He too ate breakfast. Jago was beginning to enjoy Gotaki's company. Not even Dominic got to see her without the hood. He felt very privileged. Gotaki -was- pleasing to be with.

The dragonsteed sat up just then and moved near to Jago, in a protective fashion. Jago was a little surprised by that. Gotaki just grinned. Jago petted the dragonsteed's neck and fed him some of the delicious breakfast that Gotaki had brought them.

After the little meal, Gotaki leaned over the table, pressed her muzzle to Jago's mouth quite firmly and kissed Jago deeply, while holding the back of his neck with one of her paws. Jago didn't have a choice in the matter, but he placed a hand on the back of her neck and kissed Gotaki deeply in return. Both felt very warm and exhilirated.

This kiss lasted several minutes.

Then, Gotaki withdrew and rose to her footpaws slowly. She smiled nicely to Jago, then stepped backwards into the shadows and was gone.

Jago panted, leaning on his dragonsteed, and was very amazed that Gotaki had done that. (Wow! What a woman! Why was she coming on to me like that? She did say she wasn't interested in me as a mate. That was a -=nice=- kiss! But... I need to focus on my quest. This dragonsteed sure seems to like me. I wonder why?) Jago stroked the dragonsteed's neck gently.

The dragonsteed stallion nuzzled Jago in return, then suddenly, nipped Jago's neck pretty hard.

Jago yelped painfully as something seemed to inject into his body. Jago stared at the dragonsteed hurtfully and stopped petting him. That hurt!

The dragonsteed stallion actually looked apologetic. Then, Jago heard the dragonsteed's mental voice in his head. (I humbly apologize for having to do this that way, Squire Jago Fox, but it was the only way to grant you the ability to properly communicate to all dragonsteeds. Normally, only knights of great trust are granted this gift, but I am fond of you and decided to engift you with this ability. I like you.)

Jago was pretty surprised by this. (Y-y-you l-l-like m-m-me?)

The dragonsteed stallion nodded his head. (Yes, I do. When I saw you taming the she-wolf, I made my decision to engift you. You're the only non-knight to have ever been given this gift, Squire Jago Fox. Though you actually deserve more. I have a name. It is Andre Thalingeir. My name means "royal historian of devotion". You may call me Andre. In times of desired need, you may also call me "love". I may slip up on occasion and call you "mate", but please overlook that. When the gift is normally given, it usually is also part of the mating ceremony for dragonsteeds, but I really wanted you to have this gift. After all... I will be going with you on your medicine quest. You may need me.)

Jago felt honored and slightly sheepish at the same time. (Gee, Andre... I don't know what to say... thank you... you're placing a lot of trust in me all of a sudden... I hope I don't let you down... and...) Jago resumes his petting on Andre's neck. (...I kind of like you too...)

Andre seemed to smile, as he raised up a little and hugged Jago with his front padded hoof-paws. (...Tostyn ingeir tostyn ru; Tostyn tanarg gaulir ru endor; Thal osk thalu ingeir endor...)

Jago felt some magic tingling all over his body. (What did you do, Andre?)

Andre lowered himself again, then licked and kissed Jago's mouth deeply. (I made our partnership permanent. From now on, I am your dragonsteed. I can serve no other.)

After the deep lick-kissing from Andre, Jago held his face in his hand for a moment. Then, Jago looked to Andre again. (That was a marriage ceremony, wasn't it?)

Andre nodded his head. (That is one way to look at it. But I can only serve you now. No one else. I gave my life and soul to you. Where you quest, I quest. We are endorians now.)

Jago huh'ed. (What is an endorian?)

Andre smiled and nuzzled Jago's face. (An endorian is a companion. I am your endorian, as you are mine. Among dragonsteeds, it is the same as a permanent friendship.)

Jago blinked his eyes. His first companion. Well, Damon did say he would earn his own. But Jago didn't think it would be this soon. Jago was starting to wonder if he was going to end up with a weird cast of friends who came and went from his home at will. Naw... that only happened to Dominic. Jago wasn't like that. True he wasn't a Chess agent, but Jago had his own kind of charm and methods. Jago smiled and hugged Andre fondly. (Thank you for trusting me, Andre.)

Andre moved back suddenly and stood like a steed should. (Incoming.)

It wasn't a few seconds after the warning, when Rab Streambattle and a male rabbitmorph furry entered the stables. The male rabbitmorph stood about five foot ten inches tall and weighed 150 pounds. His eyes were sky blue, while his fur, though mainly white, was calico patched all over his body. He had some sort of brownish-green khol marks and paint swirls on his face, chest and arms. His ears were bound together behind his head, while he wore a headband with a feather around his forehead. He wore a simple ragged black komodoskin vest, and a similiar ragged black komodoskin native american loincloth. He had a quiver of arrows strapped over his back, and carried a natural yew longbow that glowed slightly.

Rab looked to Jago and patted the human's rump softly. "You're finally awake. I ought to slap you around for making me promise to go see my mother, but it actually turned out well. She was pleased that I had become a great hero and was aiding a noble friend in their most recent quest. She said that she would talk to my father. Thus, I am now free to accompany you. Oh yes! Jago, this is one of my old friends. His name is Hastseltsi the swift. Though I call him Swifty. Swifty, this is Jago Fox. He is the one I told you about. Jago, Swifty rarely speaks, but when he does, his words should be heeded beyond a shadow of a doubt."

Jago smiled and held his hand out. Swifty did not accept the hand. Jago lowered his hand again.

Rab rolled his eyes a little. "...and you'll have to earn that handshake. Swifty's people were killed by humans. Your imagination can piece together the rest."

Jago frowned. (Poor guy... he probably hates seeing humans in the furry realms. Why did Rab bring him along? Oh well, I have a medicine to find.)

Moments later, Jago stood in the center of Sunset Cove with Faroth, Rab, Swifty and Andre. Rab couldn't understand why the dragonsteed was following Jago, but he didn't question it. He'd seen weirder events around Dominic.

Jago told his friends, "Look, we're only going to need to locate the one part ground kelp, the three parts mule wing dust and the glowing platinum ladle. The rest Gotaki was kind enough to fetch from Dominic's pantry. Having reduced the list down to these items, Rab... Where do we go first?"

Rab hummed. "Well, to get kelp, we need to head to the sea shore. There is a place that dries kelp, and sells the powdered kelp, for a fee. Luckily, we only need one part ground kelp. Mule wing dust is a little more difficult to fetch. And dangerous too. Mule wing dust is the ground remains of the shedded wings of a mulish equipixy, and I don't need to remind you of how dangerous equipixies are. The glowing platinum ladle we cannot buy. Only the herbalist we take the ingrediants to is allowed to properly use it. Any questions?"

Jago shuddered at the mention of the equipixy. He had wondered what mule wing dust was, and now, he was sorry he even wondered. Rab was right; gathering three parts of that dust would be dangerous. But he couldn't back down from this task. He had accepted Terlop's job. Jago was surprised when Faroth spoke up.

"If Rab and Swifty can get the kelp, I think Jago and I can get this mule wing dust stuff, with minimal danger." Faroth nudged Jago and winked, whispering, "Trust me."

Rab was also surprised. "Are you sure you want to chance it by yourselves?"

Faroth gave Rab a look. "We can do it. Is there any particular way these mulish wings have to be ground up, Rab?"

Rab hummed, then replied, "As fine as Earth pepper, I'd say."

Faroth smiled. "Then Jago and I can do this. You two get the kelp, and Jago and I will get the dust. We'll meet back here at this spot in a few days. Agreed?"

Rab looked to Swifty, then back to Faroth. "Agreed. Just be careful. I'd hate to have to rescue you boys." Rab and Swifty headed off to get the kelp.

After Rab and Swifty left, Jago looked to Faroth and asked, "How are you planning on our doing this?"

Faroth lightly stroked his magic ring. "I have my ways. The only thing I can't provide is the mulish equipixy. How are we going to locate one?"

Jago thought about this query long and hard. Then, he sorta smiled. "I know who can locate one for us... that is... if he'll do it... he hates civilization."

About a day and a half later, Jago, Faroth and Andre were with Brand Irondam in the beaver's own riverside campsite. Brand was a medium-sized beaver-morph who wore only the studded leather armor that Rab Streambattle had given him long ago, and had a quiver of arrows strapped over his back. He carried his bow in one hand, most of the time. He was adorned with hand-crafted crude jewelry, and bore the facial markings of a Wind River tribesman. He wore little else, and at times, wore nothing, company permitting such. Although he knew and had worked with Dominic many times, Jago was not one he knew very well. And this Faroth person reminded him of a greasey, like a snake-oil peddler. Brand listened to Jago's request while keeping an eye on Faroth, casually.

Finally, Brand said, "If you were not Dominic's friends, I would say no. But because you are his friends, I will do it. I happen to know of the place where the equipixies shed their wings. When they do shed, it is the only time you can actually see them for what they are. Hopefully, we do not encounter any when we are there. Even though seen, they still retain a lot of their powers."

Jago shuddered again. "Brand, if I hadn't accepted this job, I'd not even want to see the place. But because I have, and Dominic told me that we have to uphold humanity's presence while here, I have to complete the mission. I appreciate your helping us, Brand. In return, you can name your fee. I likely would not have found the place without you."

Brand hummed, studying Jago carefully. "I will have a fee to be named at another time, Jago Fox. Until then, let us locate the place. Come, we go now."

Brand led them across the Wind River Wilderness on an almost precisely chosen path, or rather, through the thick of the high grasses. Eventually, they arrived on the edge of a huge depression. Within, there were hundreds of pairs of large faerie-like wings. Most looked exactly alike.

Jago sighed, "Brand? Which ones are mulish? They all look alike to me."

Brand smiled, "I will fetch them for you. We are in luck, for no Equipixy's are about. How were you planning on grinding the wings?"

Faroth grinned and rubbed his magic ring. "My partner will grind the wings, Brand." As Faroth said this, the ring glowed, and his djinni friend, Saleem "Salem" Jabirah, appeared. Salem was a giant in appearance, although dressed in the ancient garb of a nobleman of ancient Baghdad.

Salem smiled and bowed to Faroth. "Long time no see, Faroth. For what task do you summon me today?"

Jago blinked his eyes. Faroth had a djinni? "Um... I see..."

Faroth grinned. "Today you will be grinding a mulish equipixy's wings into a fine peppery powder. This is all for a medicinal cure that Jago Fox is collecting for a friend."

Salem smiled. "Barely a task, but it will be done."

Hours later, after Jago, Faroth, Salem and Andre had parted comany with Brand at the beaver's campsite, they were making their way back to Sunset Cove. Jago glanced over at Faroth and sighed. Salem noticed this immediately and brought it to Faroth's attention.

Faroth asked, "What's wrong, Jago?"

Jago sighed and replied, "Why didn't you mention Salem to me back in Klondike? We could've probably had magically cured Terlop's mother and not had to have made this whole trip."

Faroth sorta sat up straight in his saddle. "Jago... as I recall, this is your mission; not mine. Salem, a djinni and good friend of mine, could probably very much so cure Terlop's mom. But that's the easy way out. Where is the challenge of uttering forth an 'I wish...' when there are new friends and fantastic places beckoning to you within this Furry Realm. Had I instantly given you a quick way out, do you really think Swifty would be impressed by that? I've seen it in your eyes, Jago. You want to earn Swifty's trust. And taking the easy way out of a job will not impress him. Listen to me! I sound like Dominic now... All that training must've really taught me something. Jago, I have a djinni, but he wasn't given to me; I earned him. It was all part of my tasks in showing Dominic and the others that I was worth more than I was originally."

Jago nodded his head. Faroth -was- starting to sound just like Dominic. That was a scary thought. "Yeah, I do want to earn Swifty's trust. But I fear that he's already decided in his mind that no human is a good human. And I can't blame him. His family was killed by humans."

Faroth grinned and relaxed again. "That hot little rabbit likes you, Jago. I can read his eyes too." He fell silent as he rode his own dragonsteed.

Jago blushed! While it was true that he wanted to be Swifty's friend, he hadn't considered going that far... At least, not where Faroth's gutter like mind was suggesting. Why was everyone suddenly coming on to him? First, it was Gotaki, then Andre, and now, Swifty. It made no sense. But what did make sense was his wanting to deliver the medicine to Terlop, in time.

Jago's party arrived back in Sunset Cove and were greeted by Rab, Swifty and Gotaki in the city circle. Gotaki was once again wearing her ninja garb and facial hood. Jago smiled at that. He had seen her face once already.

Rab smiled and greeted Jago. "Good to have you back. Are we ready to have the herbalist mix the ingrediants?"

Jago nodded his head. "Who are we going to get to mix this stuff up?"

Gotaki chuckled. "Funny you should ask that, Jago Fox. An old friend of yours will be doing this for us." She mock-imitated a male accented voice, saying, "'ello mate! Ah see ye's brought me some ingredients to mix for ye. Now, be a good joey and sit back whiles Ah do me 'erbalist job." Gotaki grinned under her mask.

Jago was laughing at the good imitation. Good thing Reed couldn't hear her doing that.

Meanwhile, back inside Sunset View Palace...

Dominic gazed over the royal personages within the summit chamber. Among those gathered, Dominic saw the otters, King and Queen Lutraon, who presided over the river tradesmen; the rams, King and Queen Bighorn, who presided over the Wind River gold miners; the foxes, King and Queen Vulpa, who presided over the twilight huntsmen; the wolves, King and Queen Moonmesa, who presided over the northern nomads; the kangaroo, King and Queen Marumi, who presided over the opal herbalists; the stags, King and Queen Cervus, who presided over the druidic foresters; the rabbits, King and Queen Thumperpaw, who presided over the bardic trickers; the skunks, King and Queen Seganku, who presided over the academic scribers; the raccoons, King and Queen Cypros, who presided over the sophisticated acquirers; the dolphinoids, King and Queen Delphi, who presided over the coral artificers; the jaguars, King and Queen Gajra, who presided over the jade craftsmen; the boars, King and Queen Barswin, who presided over the gallant guardsmen; the bears, King and Queen Grizzly, who presided over the nectar confectionists; the panthers, King and Queen Pardu, who presided over the arcane researchers; the moose, King and Queen El Kelk, who presided over the tundra police; the beavers, King and Queen Beofora, who presided over the artistic architects; the panda, King and Queen Ambu, who presided over the spice merchants; the eagles, King and Queen Aquil, who presided over the aerial scouts; and under special attendance, the lions, Emperor and Empress Kimjihda, rulers over most animalkind on their native shores.

It was fortunate that King El Kelk and King Barswin had both donated their finest captains to assist Dominic in upholding the security of this summit gathering. Dominic grinned as he leaned towards Damon, and whispered, "Remind me later to get myself a zookeeper's license."

Damon chuckled quietly and whispered back, "I've been telling you that for years, old friend."

Devyn snerked, as he glanced up at the two of them from his spot on the floor between them.

Dominic hummed. "It's odd that there are no mice or rats attending this gathering. I wonder why that is?"

Boar Captain Ershwin replied, "They used to be allowed attendance rights, until the day they arrived to kill off another king. After that, they were no longer welcome."

Moose Captain Mosler nodded his antlered head. "An unanimous vote by the kings made it official, even though the vermin king denied any knowledge of the assassination attempt. That isn't to say that they don't still come around."

Ershwin exclaimed, "They send a messenger who arrives at about the half-way point of the summit, and a request, or rather, a begging, to allow the vermin king to attend is presented. The messenger is usually turned away, and it isn't long after that another attempt is made to kill one of the kings."

Mosler scratched his chin a little. "But this year is different. The emperor and empress are here. A very tempting prize for any would-be assassin."

Dominic hummed again. "Now I more fully understand why King Bighorn asked me to handle security."

Back at the Vanlyone mansion in Rocky Falls...

The front door's lock was opened by Leia Tanner's set of keys, as she led two people into the mansion itself. Leia looked around casually, then called out cautiously, "Damon? Devyn? Anybody? I'm calling out because I don't want to get pounced!"

Jonie emerged from the library and stopped short at the library door. "Leia? Um... But... Who is that?"

Leia smiled at Jonie. "Oh good! One of the normal residents. Where's Dominic? It's really important that we speak to him."

Jonie blinked her eyes. "But... um... Okay... Dominic and his friends went to the Furry Realms on a mission for King Bighorn... at least... he was supposed to have gone there..."

Leia nodded her head, then turned to her two "friends", and exclaimed, "Josh, why don't you use the phone in the kitchen to make your phone call." She pointed the way into the kitchen.

Josh Savage, who was a tall sturdily built male human, wore a gray flannel suit and black dress shoes. He thanked Leia and headed into the kitchen to use the phone.

The other individual, a male human who was about Dominic's height and weight, only more athletic-looking, was wearing hiking boots, blue jeans, a black t-shirt, and solid white jacket with a small golden chess bishop emblazoned over the right-hand zipper-pocket. He was also wearing wire-frame glasses, and had brown hair, hazel eyes, and fair to tanned skin. He looked at Jonie and said, "Your name is Jonie? Calm down and don't stutter. This is very important. Where exactly in the Furry Realms -is- Dominic? It's extremely important that we find him."

Jonie had to sit down. She was that much in shock. "Dominic is heading the security team at the kings summit. I don't know where the summit is being held, but someone is bound to show up sooner or later. Um... Are you...?"

The man nodded his head and flashed his badge to Jonie. Then, he put his badge away. "Great. How are we going to get to him in time now?"

Leia hummed. "I think I know a way. Jonie... did Dominic leave his Artemis medallion in his den?"

Jonie nodded her head. "Yeah, he didn't think he'd need it, this time." Jonie led the two into the office/den and to the case where several special items were stored. "There it is."

Leia smiled and picked up the Artemis medallion. "Here goes nothing..." She rubbed the medallion three times, then waited.

Almost instantly, with an accompanying flash of lightning and thunder, Artemis and Apollo appeared in the office/den. Artemis was surprised when she saw that it was Leia who summoned her. But she was even more surprised by the man standing with Leia.

Artemis exclaimed, "Jansen Tanner?! But... you can't be here! Dominic is supposed to be you and..." Then, Artemis stopped and took a good look at Jansen. "By Zeus, it -is- you!"

Jansen smiled. "Artemis, lovely goddess of the hunt... and Apollo, grand god of the sun..." He kissed Artemis' hand, and shook Apollo's hand. Then, Jansen continued... "Artemis, we called you because we need to find Dominic immediately. Jonie told us that Dominic is on a mission in the Furry Realms, but not where. That's why you were summoned."

Artemis blinked her eyes. "Athena recently said that Jansen was smarter than Dominic. I didn't understand what she meant then, but the light is starting to shine now. How'd you pull it off?"

Jansen smiled again. "Never tell a Tanner what will happen to them before it happens. Thanks to all the prewarnings I got from you and your friends, I was able to make some magical arrangements upon returning home. I controlled the time gate and arrived at the Saudi Arabian campsite of a genie hound friend of mine. He granted me a very special wish..."

Leia grinned.

Jansen continued. "...a wish to create Dominic Bastian Vanlyone as his own person in my time period. He was to be an exact twin of me in every way and form, memories included. As an extra bonus, I arranged for that special memory loss magic that was on me to be fully removed from me and affect Dominic fully. I then made a deal with my employer to let Dominic think he was Jansen Tanner and continue working as me, while I continued working for the organization away from headquarters. Also, whenever Dominic was near death, I received a special warning that allowed me to make special arrangements to have him brought back to life. This last time, I happened to be in Cairo Egypt at the temple of Ra when I got the warning. I made a deal with Ra, and had him reincarnate Dominic into that lion form he was fond of. Josh Savage caught up with me in Cairo and explained the mess that was going on back home here in Rocky Falls. So, the two of us traveled through one of Dominic's own stone gateways to the mansion where we went around to the front and greeted Leia before entering the mansion."

Josh emerged from the kitchen at that time and stood with Leia. Evidently, seeing two gods meant nothing to Josh. Leia nodded to Josh to be quiet and listen.

Artemis smiled. "I must admit, Jansen, you certainly have earned your reputation. Okay, I'll help you find Dominic before its too late. Our white cervine friend predicted that Dominic was going to die, yet again. I have to assume that is why you're here now."

Jansen grinned. "You mean the White Stag? You can say it out loud. As a Chess agent, simply knowing he exists is all the desire I need. Now, if you have any idea where Dominic is and what he's doing, you need to come clean and tell us."

Artemis hummed. "You've never been dead, have you?"

Jansen chuckled. "As Athena said, I'm the smarter one. I know how to stay alive."

At that moment in Reed Huxley's apothecary lab...

Reed smiled, as he put the finishing touches on the medical cure. "'ere ya go, mate. One 'erbal remedy made ta order. Just like ya asked." He handed the bottle of liquid to Jago.

Jago smiled. "Thanks, Reed. What do I owe you?"

Reed placed a paw to his chin, then looked up into the rafters of the lab. "Ah will think of something when ya return from your quest." He glanced to Jago and grinned. "Now run along, like a good little joey, and stay outta trouble."

Gotaki smiled, gathering Jago and the others, then shadow-teleported them back to Klondike Town. Jago then headed off to the Inn and Tavern of the Flocking Panther to find Terlop, hoping that he hadn't taken too long. Terlop's mother needed this medicine.

Jago approached the barkeeper and asked for Terlop. The barkeeper escorted Jago into a back room where the young male goat, Terlop, was cleaning and polishing a knight's armor and shield. The barkeeper left Jago, and returned to the front.

Jago ahem'ed, "Terlop? I have the medicine for your mom. Tell me I am not too late."

Terlop turned to Jago and smiled shyly. "Thank you, sir. Let me finish up here and we will go cure mother." He resumed cleaning the armor. Jago patiently waited and watched Terlop work.

Soon, the knight, a tall male badger, arrived to get his armor. He examined the armor and started to complain about a missed spot. Jago snarled, and grabbed the badger's tongue, and wiped it over the indicated spot. Then, Jago grabbed the badger's cape and wiped the spot dry.

Jago growled, "I don't know why people who slither their way into titles of nobility seem to get off on belittling the lower class! But in the eyes of the gods, no class is better than the other! The boy did his best! Now get your crappy armor out of here before I show you what a Fox can really do!!!"

Both the badger and Terlop cringed fearfully as Jago ranted, then the badger nervously pulled out a silver coin and gave it to Terlop. The badger cautiously collected his armor and shield, and departed the room.

The badger further received a lecture from Gotaki as he was muttering and cussing in front of the tavern. The badger knight headed to his dragonsteed, mounted up and departed.

Jago calmed down and sighed. "Sorry Terlop. It just makes me mad to see servants get picked on by snooty people. Anyway... we need to go cure your mom. I got the medicine she needs."

Terlop nodded his head and led Jago back to his place. The home was in the run-down portion of Klondike Town. It was so run-down, that simply seeing it was mentally ticking Jago off.

A few hours later, Jago, Faroth, Salem and Andre rejoined Rab and Swifty in Sunset Cove at a small eatery called the Carrot Patch. Rab was footing the bill this time. Gotaki seemed to have vanished after dropping everyone off in the city. Jago played with his food as he rested from the finished mini-quest. Swifty had been watching Jago for the whole meal, and occasionally, whispering something to Rab. Faroth and Salem ate quite happily.

Rab patted Jago's arm. "You did well, Jago. We got the ingredients and Terlop got the medicine, as well as the gold coin he gave you. That was right sweet of you."

Jago glanced to Rab. "If we were so successful, then why do I feel like crap?"

Rab smiled. "Well, you did tell off that badger knight of Woodsberry. And Gotaki backed you up after you were done with him. You're a lucky guy, Jago."

Jago hummed. "I feel like I'm sort of incomplete, Rab."

Rab thought on that for a moment. As he thought, Swifty whispered something into his ear, then nodded at Jago. Rab shot a curious glance at Swifty, then turned to Jago again. "Jago? Swifty suggests that perhaps you might want to take on another mini-quest."

Jago blinked his eyes. "...And I suppose Swifty has one in mind?"

Rab nodded his muzzle. "As a matter of fact, he does have one in mind... if you're interested."

Jago hummed. "Okay, I have to know. What is the mini-quest?"

Rab smiled again. "This time, you accompany Swifty and me on a real adventure. Of course, you'll need proper gear and a weapon. Here's the mission: south of Sunset Cove, a good distance away, there is an old lighthouse tower that was built on the ruins of an ancient civilization. A local lord is offering a sizable reward for a party of adventurers to go in and retrieve three types of artifacts within the dusty hallways within the ruins themselves. The lord seeks an old sceptre, a triangular crystal, and an old tapestry emblazoned with the markings of ancient magics. The reward he's offered is 5000 gold coins, an item of magic, and a granted wish from his rod of wishes. Are you game for this adventure?"

Jago hummed. "I imagine there is danger involved or the reward wouldn't be so high. Were you going to go do this whether I agreed to go or not?"

Rab grinned. "Of course! I hate being in Sunset Cove, Jago. Just being here makes me feel non-important. I am only happy when adventuring. Want to come along?"

Jago smiled. "I'd be glad to come along... however, I have to inform Dominic of where I'll be in case he needs me for any reason. You wouldn't want me to just abandon him here in this boring old kings summit, would you?"

Rab smirked. "Dominic will likely be jealous, but I think he'd let you go. Especially if I am with you on this adventure. Which I will be... but I can't go by myself. I need to find a priest, a mage, a thief, and fighting minstrel. I've been told that the ruins are only accessible via chords played on a certain musical instrument."

Faroth grinned at this point. "You need a thief? I volunteer. I may not be as good as Huckleberry Slyfingers, but I am not a slacker either. Besides, I've been wanting to play around a bit without really stealing from anyone. So how about it? Can I be your thief?"

Jago was again surprised that Faroth was volunteering for a dangerous mission.

Rab grinned at Faroth. "You can come, but not your djinni friend. If he were along, you'd likely be tempted to have him solve problems for you, and that's not we're about. Secondly, I hope you can tolerate being under my leadership."

Faroth smiled. "You have a deal. Salem? I need some local thief's gear, armor, and weapons. After that, you can return to our island and await my call again."

Salem nodded his head. "A minor request, Faroth." He blinked his eyes and nodded his head, and Faroth was garbed and equipped as requested. "I will go now and await your call." He vanished.

As Rab began making inquiries about the party members that he would need, Jago headed back to the castle to speak with Dominic. Once he was inside, he located Devyn in one of the side halls.

Jago smiled. "Hiya Devyn. Is Dominic nearby?"

Devyn yawned as he glanced up at Jago. "Through this door. Castle type bathroom. Go right in."

Jago nodded his head, stooping to pet and scritch Devyn's head, then arose and entered the bathroom. Dominic was indeed within doing his business on one of the three available openings. Jago smirked and said, "Are you really doing something or is this in protest of the boredom?"

Dominic grinned at Jago. "I wish it was a protest, but everyone has to use the bathroom once in a while. What do you need, Jago?"

Jago leaned up against one wall. "Rab wants me to go on another mini-quest with him. This time to some old ruins to the south of here. I agreed to go but only after I came to tell you where we were going. I didn't want you to think we had just skipped out on you. Plus, I've been curious on how the security detail was coming along."

Dominic hummed. "I've learned that the Emperor and Empress may be the ones who are to be the assassin's targets this year. This is like the first kings summit that the imperial nobles have ever attended. It's by far, the greatest, most tempting prize ever attempted."

Jago hummed, as well. "And you don't know who the assassin(s) are yet?"

Dominic exclaimed. "I have a suspicion, but I don't think even that party would chance being framed for slaying the imperialists."

Jago nodded his head. "Well, I am sure you will uncover who they are in time. You tend to be able to succeed at these things. Anyway, I need to get back to Rab and the others. Faroth is also coming with us. He actually volunteered."

Dominic smiled. "Faroth is a good man. His motives and goals often are way out there, but he's capable of getting the job done. And as long as Rab is the leader of the party, I trust that you'll have no problems fitting into this little adventure."

Jago headed to the door. "Thanks Dominic. See you when we get back. And Dominic..." He turned to face Dominic again. "Try not to get killed while I am gone." Jago grinned and was out the door before Dominic could respond.

Dominic laughed audibly. "That Jago. But it's true... I've been highly concerned over the White Stag's vision of my dying. But I have cheated Death once too often. He is likely becoming impatient and may seek to force me to die. Or maybe I am just being paranoid."

Jago arrived back in the city where Swifty forcibly pulled him into an armory to be outfitted. Jago was a little surprised that Swifty chose to touch him, but let it go. This was business. Jago spent the next few hours undergoing the crafted and learned paws of a male skunk armorer... measuring, trimming, and crafting.

While this was going on, Rab continued gathering his would-be party. He had located a male dingaroo (dingo mixed with kangaroo) priest of Chenupial and a female cockatoo specialist mage whose field was transmutation. Rab's biggest problem was locating a fighting minstrel. Every musician he spoke to turned him down when asked if they'd accompany him on a journey frought with danger. Rab grumbled as he was slowly making his way back towards the city square.

Just then, Rab heard harp music playing faintly somewhere beyond an alleyway. Rab forged his way over to see who was playing. Rab stopped short when he saw the five foot tall slender male rat wearing the dark armor of a marksman. However, it was this same individual who was playing the harp. And he played it well. Rab hummed silently, not really wanting to ask a rat to come with them, but at this point, Rab had run out of options. He approached and pitched the offer.

The rat stopped playing his harp and slowly gazed up at Rab. "...And why should you trust a species who has been declared as lowly as the filth beneath the kingly trodden slime?"

Rab coughed a bit at that question. "I need a fighting minstrel and no other musician would agree to come with me. I must admit, you're a last ray of hope. As for trust, who can judge without actions to back up words spoken under false pretenses?"

The rat hummed, staring down into the dirt in the alleyway. "I am not a minstrel, but I do know my musical knowledge well. I am a troubadour marksman. A fancy archer and part-time scout. I usually guide people through subterranean passages where no other scout would dare tread."

Rab was a little suspicious of this rat. Something about him stank of nobility. "I am Rab Streambattle. What may I call you?"

The rat glanced up to Rab once again. "What's in a name? You may call me Fletcher. If I feel later that you have earned my real name, you'll get it. And furthermore, I cannot accept any wages for aiding you on this adventure." The rat stood up. "Shall we go now?"

Rab hummed. "Do you have anything against humans?"

Fletcher shook his head slowly. "If they do not wrong me, I will not wrong them. Humans are rather an innocent species until adulthood is reached. Then, they must be watched, with caution. There are humans in your party?"

Rab nodded his head. "Yes, there are. One is a fighter in training who has yet to discover his true calling. His name is Jago Fox. The other human is our acting thief. His name is Faroth Walker. Then, we also have a rabbit huntsman friend of mine named Hastseltsi the swift. I call him Swifty. Swifty rarely speaks, but when he does, his words should be heeded beyond a shadow of a doubt. Jake Paduru is a dingaroo priest of Chenupial, and Alaya is our transmuter mage."

Fletcher smiled. "A fine mix, seems like. You must be an experienced leader, Rab Streambattle."

Rab grinned. "I am a lordless samurai. A ronin. I act as I like and serve whoever I choose."

Fletcher, without smiling, exclaimed, "It is amazing how similar to Sunset Cove's royal prince your very appearance seems to be. Are you related to royal prince Rab Lutraon in any way?"

Rab irked and glanced to Fletcher. "Look... please keep that to yourself. I didn't want to return to Sunset Cove. I hate it here. Let us just say that my father and I have different views on certain procedures. He wanted me to be a soldier. As you can see, I didn't do that."

Fletcher seemed to smile at that. "I am pleased to hear that, Rab. Shall we join the rest of your friends?"

Rab nodded his muzzle again and led the way back to the others who were waiting just outside of the weaponsmith's shop. Jago was apparently inside being balanced for a selection of weapons. Rab left Fletcher with the others, after a brief introduction, then headed inside to check on his human friend. Swifty was standing just inside the door leaning up against the wall.

The chubby female seal weaponsmith was attending to Jago's needs, trying to be helpful, yet understanding that Jago had no prior weapon using knowledge.

Rab leaned up against the wall beside Swifty and whispered to him about finding their musician.

Swifty peeked outside at Fletcher, then withdrew and sort of stared at Rab.

The weaponsmith seal smiled as she placed the last weapon into Jago's scabbard.

As the weaponsmith seal turned Jago around to adjust the arrow quiver, Rab and Swifty got their first look at the new and improved Jago Fox.

Jago stood about six foot three inches tall and weighed about 235 pounds. Jago had short brown hair, brown eyes, and tanned skin. Jago now wore a white silk padded shirt under a tunic made of dark cerulean komodo-scale flexible plates. The armored yet hooded tunic had loose long sleeves that ended in silver komodo-scale bracers. Each bracer had the squid-inked black etching of the Morphis Software logo. He wore comfortably padded komodo-scale pants, and wore high soft komodo-scale boots. Jago had a common dark green komodo-scaled belt around his waist, over his tunic, with a large belt pouch on his right side, and a short sword in its scabbard on his left side. On his outer right-hand thigh, strapped securely around his leg with two straps, Jago had a scabbarded dagger for easy access. Strapped to his upper left arm was what appeared to be a small thick black wooden rod with its own hand-guard. Rab had never seen a weapon like that before. Jago also had a quiver of fourty arrows positioned just under his reinforced backpack, for easy access, while his bow was nowhere to be seen. Rab surmised that Jago had chosen a composite bow that was inside the backpack or inside the belt pouch. Finishing off the look, Jago wore a white and cerulean swirled cloth band around his head.

Jago smiled and winked at Rab.

Rab smiled and whistled in return. The otter was pretty impressed by Jago's equipment choices. "You look pretty sharp, Jago. I hope you left some room in that backpack for other miscellaneous equipment."

Jago grinned. "Gotaki acquired us a team wagon that will be pulled by two dragonsteeds, Andre and a friend of his. Gotaki is filling the water barrels and getting the dry rations and camping gear together. Or had you forgotten that she is keeping an eye on me still?"

Rab was actually relieved that Gotaki was getting involved in this affair. He still had no idea if he could trust Fletcher and having Gotaki around was a good way to keep an eye on the party.

Swifty seemed to be the most impressed with Jago's appearance. Of course, Swifty had watched Jago get undressed, so the rabbit evidently got to see more than anyone dared think.

The weaponsmith seal grinned and patted Jago on the rump. "You look very chipper, Mister Jago. Your lady friend already paid me for your weapons. Come again any time."

Jago smiled, turned and kissed the seal on the cheek and replied, "You have a fine skill. Thank you for the assistance." Jago walked over to Rab and Swifty. "Are we about ready to go, Rab?"

Rab smiled and said, "Just waiting on you. Wait until you see our adventuring party this time. Even I have no idea on how this will turn out."

Jago grinned. "With you leading us, I am sure you made the best choices you could, considering the stock of the region you had to work with." Jago escorted Rab and Swifty outside.

When Jago saw Fletcher, he greeted the marksman rat with no contempt. Fletcher greeted Jago in return, then fell back to being silent. Jago, unlike Rab, saw something trusting in Fletcher's eyes. But he didn't dwell on it. Rab was speaking again, telling everyone about the adventure's goal, and where they were going to be going. Jago was pretty excited to be going on a real adventure. Faroth was just standing quietly to one side. He kept eying the other party members.

They finally got underway, heading to the south from Sunset Cove. Swifty, Faroth and Fletcher led the front of the party, being the scouts and hunters. Jake and Alaya traveled in the center of the party, and Rab and Jago brought up the rear. Rab suggested this marching order for the mere purpose of training Jago in swordsmanship and beginning fighting techniques. Jago was glad for this, as his only sword and fighting knowledge came from the video games he and Jonie had created for Morphis Software. The first few days were spent traveling in this fashion.

By the fourth afternoon, Fletcher and Swifty appeared in camp and announced that the target goal was now in sight. Rab conferred with the two, then announced a final camping before entering the coming dungeon goal. Jago helped pitch some tents, then sat back and relaxed as he wrote in his journal about the journey itself. All this was important information for an upcoming video game.

Faroth brought in some wild turkey and giant lizard meat, while Swifty fetched some fruits and vegetables. Rab and Jake prepared and served the evening's dinner. Everyone had their fill, then preparations for the dungeon's entry were made. Rab took Jago aside to train him some more.

Rab smiled. "You're doing better, Jago. This reminds me of when I gave Dominic sword training."

Jago panted, keeping Rab in his sights. "Thank you, Rab. You're a really good teacher. Do you think I'll make a difference once we go inside?"

Rab swung at Jago, and Jago parried the strike. "I believe that not everyone is meant to fight, but everyone needs some form of protection. That was a good parry, by the way..."

Jago hummed. "Rab? There is a trick I'd like to try, that is, if you're game to see if it will work."

Rab tilted his head. "I'm always up for a new fighting trick. What do I do?"

Jago bent over slightly, then crossed his bracers together, while holding his head to one side. "With your sword drawn, pretend there is a monster behind me, and there is no room to get around me. Run toward me, do a small hop, placing your footpaws on my bracers, and I will quickly heft you up and over my body so you get a clear aerial sword strike against the monster."

Rab grinned, then began his approach. As he neared Jago, he made his hop, and promptly collided into Jago, sending the two rolling across the grass. Jago and Rab shot a gaze at each other, then laughed. Rab said, "Shall we try that again?"

Jago giggled and got back into position.

When Rab and Jago returned to the camp, Rab was surprised to see Gotaki sitting there sharpening her blades. Gotaki grinned as she noticed the grass and dirt stains all over the two guys.

"I thought this was an adventure, not a date. You two look as if you were doing more than just practicing." Gotaki winked at the two of them. "Luckily, I am on watch."

Jago said, "I was teaching Rab a new fighting trick. We... missed... a few times. Needless to say, the grass and dirt was more damaged than we were."

Rab grinned. "We didn't stop until we got the trick right at least three times. And I must admit, it can be a good trick to know. I hope it never gets used, but it would save lives."

Gotaki nodded her head. "Whether you were practicing or mating, I really don't care. I merely stated how I thought you appeared to the casual eye. Get cleaned up and sleep... come the morning, you'll both need your strength. The dungeon entrance has one of those lovely seals."

Rab arched an eye. "What kind of seal?"

Gotaki didn't smile as she resumed sharpening her blades. "A magical seal. The kind that only a high priest can undo. That usually means that whatever is waiting behind the door will be itching for a fight. Sounds like old times, doesn't it?"

Rab grumbled and swore something foul. "It seems a few minor details were not told to us before we accepted this job. Now I begin to wonder what magical traps await us within..."

Rab and Jago headed off to the nearby stream and got cleaned up. Then, the two returned to their tents. Rab slept with Swifty, while Jago shared a tent with Fletcher.

Fletcher watched Jago enter and get undressed. Then, as Jago was sliding into his sleeping bag, Fletcher gently strummed his harp a little.

Jago turned and looked at Fletcher. "Why did you agree to come along on this trip?"

Fletcher glanced at Jago. "Same reason you did, I imagine. Though, I have more of a goal than the rest. I have something to prove that requires no payment."

Jago hummed. "You're a lot more than you're saying, aren't you?"

Fletcher nodded his head. "Yes, I am. Enough chat, get some sleep." Fletcher blew out the lantern light, plunging the tent into darkness.

Jago lay there quietly, then after a few minutes, he heard the harp again. "Fletcher? You're a noble, aren't you?"

Fletcher never answered, yet in the darkness, there was some movement over in his area.

The next morning, after breakfast had been eaten and the camp secured, Rab and party entered the dungeon ruins before them. The place was dark, cold and musty. Gotaki led the party up to the so-called holy seal. Rab examined it, then swore quietly.

Rab turned to the party. "Gotaki is right. It's a mystic seal. The kind used for containing something bad or powerful within. Well, we're going to open it. Be ready for anything." Rab nodded his muzzle to Gotaki.

Gotaki turned to the seal and chanted to Noktyrni, the lord of shadows. The seal glowed faintly, then vanished. Gotaki slowly opened the gate. And all heck broke loose as what seemed like an army of devil-monsters poured out of the unsealed gate. Jago had his sword in hand immediately, and with his friends, waded into the fray of combat. Sword slashes, magical spells, and gunfire were the chief sounds heard within the ruins for several hours. Then, a blanket of silence fell over the scene. Jago was sitting in his tent allowing Jake to bandage a wound to his right shoulder and left torso. The others were likewise wounded in this fight, but fortune was on their side for no one had died.

Gotaki sat next to Jago. She said, "We were lucky, Jago. Of the whole fight, Rab was wounded the greatest. Don't fret; he will live. But I think he is beginning to see the folly of challenging death time after time. Dominic wasn't here this time to back him, and I believe Rab has finally gleaned something to fear. I think this will be his last mission. He can't handle doing this anymore." Gotaki kissed Jago's forehead, then departed the tent.

Jago sighed. He didn't want to see Rab retire. The otter had a lot of experience so far. Knowledge that he could teach to others. Jago winced as Jake tightened the bandage. "Thank you, Jake."

Jake nodded his muzzle. "You like Rab, don't you?"

Jago nodded his head. "Yeah, I do. I don't want to see him get killed, but I don't want to see him retire, either. He's got a lot of knowledge for journeying in this world."

Jake smiled and patted Jago's non-wounded shoulder. "I need to tend to the others." Jake headed out of the tent.

Jago got up and walked out to make the rounds, checking on each of the others. He located Faroth making a pot of coffee. Jago sat down nearby. "What's your take on all of this?"

Faroth lifted his head to Jago revealing his single black eye. "Never try to pick the pocket of a distracted monster during a battle."

Jago couldn't help but to smirk.

Faroth grinned. "But I got what I was after..." He pulled out an ornate silver key. "...just have to figure out what keyhole it fits."

Dominic yawned and stretched his arms and legs a bit. Something about this daybreak made him feel uneasy. Dominic was super glad the kings were not meeting today. He noticed Devyn sleeping nearby and Damon passed out on his own bed. (Demons sure sleep a lot.) Dominic thought to himself.

A young male otter page poked his head into the bedroom door, and spoke, "Sir Dominic? Queen Lutraon would like to see you in her personal gardens. Alone."

Dominic nodded to the page and put on his sword belt, then proceeded to follow the young page through the palace. It was after descending two levels of floors that Dominic got the idea that something was wrong. He had explored the palace upon arriving, and knew that this wasn't the way to the queen's gardens. Yet, he continued to follow the young page. Perhaps the page was directed to bring Dominic by this route. But after descending another set of steps, Dominic finally unsheathed his sword rather loudly. "Enough is enough, page. I happen to know that the queen's gardens are on the ground level, and we could've been there almost an hour ago. Where are you taking me?"

Just then, the page seemingly vanished before Dominic's eyes, and the ambush occurred. Dominic put up a hearty fight, but he was outnumbered and outmuscled. Dominic was held by each arm between two very strong centaur stallions. Then, from out of the darkness, a familiar entity strode forth to stand before Dominic. He lifted Dominic's head up and grinned, saying, "I knew if I waited long enough, you'd put down that medallion that my sister Artemis gave you. Neither she nor that blasted white stag can save you this time, Dominic Vanlyone. Even that stupid ninja isn't around this time. It's just you and me and my loyal warrior friends."

Dominic spat at Ares, but missed.

The two centaurs twisted Dominic's arms enough to remind him that he was in a losing position.

Ares grinned. "When last we met, you handed me to Artemis and Athena. That was your biggest mistake. You should have killed me, Dominic. You won't get that chance again."

Dominic felt trapped. He couldn't let Ares win. "You're pretty bold if you think that even held as I am that I am totally helpless. I have one last trick up my sleeve, Ares. Catch me if you can!"

Dominic suddenly closed his eyes tightly, then promptly vanished!

Ares lunged at Dominic just as Dominic vanished, but Ares was too late. Somehow, Dominic had managed to give Ares the slip. "Change back into your otter guardsman forms and search the palace! I want Dominic found! In the meantime..." He motioned to the figure in the shadows. "...I need you to return to the ground floor and take Dominic's place guarding the summit. No one can know that Dominic is missing. You had better not fail me..."

The figure nodded his head and walked past Ares, stopping only to pick up Dominic's sword. "I won't fail you, Master Ares." The figure turned and exited the lower corridors, heading back up towards the upper chambers. He knew he wouldn't fail.

The figure barely had entered Dominic's quarters when he was suddenly ambushed in an attack. Damon and Devyn fought and pinned the figure to the floor after several minutes. Finally, Damon spoke towards a corner of the chamber, "What the hell is this thing, anyway? It looks like Dominic, but it isn't."

Artemis stood there. And she wasn't alone. Leia Tanner, Josh Savage, Sallee Tanner, Jo Tanner, Shane Wayne, Jansen Tanner, Jonie Dreamsea and Reed Huxley were also standing there with her. Artemis approached slowly and said, "It is a simulacrum. A living golem created by Hephaestus, though someone has altered this one to look and sound like Dominic. And I can guess who..."

The simulacrum spoke, "Ares will triumph in the end."

Artemis pulled out one of her vorpal arrows. "Like he did the last time? Damon, you may kill this simulacrum. It has no further use." Artemis put the vorpal arrow away.

Damon grinned. "With the utmost pleasure!" And he proceeded to dismember the simulacrum, then disintegrated the remains in holy fire, until there was nothing left.

Suddenly, the white stag appeared in the chamber! "What I had envisioned has come to pass..." Then he saw Jansen standing there. "What the...?"

Josh blinked his eyes. "You mean there really is a white stag?"

Jansen grinned. "Yeah, but trust me. Catching him for three wishes really isn't worth your trouble. If you need a no-strings attached wish granted, my genie-hound friend can just as easily grant your wish just as this white stag can. And he's easier to find and talk to, as well."

The white stag stared at Jansen. "You tricked me!"

Artemis chuckled, "He tricked me too, but he has a good reason for doing so. In fact, if this scene of Dominic dying is what you envisioned, then you tricked yourself, as well. That wasn't Dominic we just destroyed. It was a simulacrum. The real Dominic is elsewhere. But so is Ares."

Jansen grinned. "I am surprised that Dominic never asked who 'the harvest stallion' was. But enough nostalgia. We need to find Dominic and get everything settled out, before it's too late."

The white stag never took his eyes off of Jansen. "What do you mean 'before it's too late'?"

Jansen exclaimed, "Remember the last time Dominic got brought back to life? Ra was involved. Well, thanks to me, Ra granted that life to Dominic. But there is a catch this time."

The white stag asked, "What kind of catch?"

Jansen replied, "The catch was this: Ra would bring Dominic back to life, but if Dominic were to die again, he'd automatically come back... as a fifteen year old kid."

Meanwhile, back in the dungeon ruins... The adventure through the corridors were meeting more scenes of combat. Whatever was kept in here seemed to merit an enormous amount of protection. Finally, the party opened and entered the last chamber. Within the huge chamber were three pedastals. On each pedastal was one of the three items that they sought. Jago and Faroth thought it odd that this chamber was not guarded.

Too odd.

Gotaki examined the pedastals cautiously.

It was Fletcher who spoke up first. "This is a puzzle trap. Worse, it is a musical puzzle trap. I have to hit three notes in the proper sequence and speed, or the room will seal itself shut, and fill up with sand and scorpions. It is detailed in the hieroglyphs here on the wall beside the door. After I hit these three notes, three people need to grab the objects off the pedastals within the next three seconds, or the trap will still be sprung."

Rab looked at Fletcher. "You didn't say you could read hieroglyphs."

Fletcher gazed seriously at Rab. "From one noble to another, Rab Lutraon, we both know that only noble-born individuals are taught to decipher hieroglyphics."

Rab growled when he heard Fletcher use his real name. "Fine. I didn't want everyone here to know I was the damned prince of this country. But you likewise admitted that you were a noble-born too. Everyone knows my name; what is your real name?"

Fletcher glanced at Gotaki. "I am sure the ninja has known all along."

Rab turned his gaze to Gotaki.

Gotaki turned and grinned. "Rab, dear friend... you may be only a prince, but Fletcher out ranks you by many titles. Fletcher is actually King Rod Enteus, lord of the troubadour marksman rats. The only king who is not invited to the summits. Though there is more to his tale, Rab. It was Rod's father who had been wrongfully accused those years ago."

Rab blinked his eyes.

King Enteus nodded his muzzle. "Earlier this year, my father, the old rat king, died a bitter and broken soul. He swore unto death that he was innocent of what he had been accused of. I came to Sunset Cove not to join the summit, but to play my instrument for the poor. That is where you found me, Rab. In that dirty, dusty, forgotten alleyway... entertaining the poor. When you offered this quest, my first thoughts were to tell you to go away. But after you told me that the reward was a wish, I decided to see this through to the end. And the only thing I will wish for is for the full truth behind that summit fiasco be finally known to all within the Sunset Cove Kingdom. And with the current summit in full swing, with the emperor and his wife in full attendance, the shameful wronging brought down on my father will finally be known."

Rab blinked his eyes again. "You want a full pardon."

King Enteus nodded his muzzle. "That is all I want."

Rab sighed. "I always hated being a member of royalty. I guess I never saw what was really going on. And when I defied my father by running away to become a full-blown adventurer, the actions I took probably made things worse. My father won't live forever, and I am next in line for that throne. But I don't want to be trapped on that blasted throne. I like adventuring!" Rab sighed again and patted King Enteus' shoulder. "I will help you get that full pardon."

King Enteus smiled. "Treasure first, then pardon." He pulled his harp to his front side, and made sure the strings were undamaged. "Everyone in position. Let us solve this puzzle and escape from this place."

Faroth, Jago and Gotaki stood near each pedastal, poised on the ready.

King Enteus nodded his head and, after taking one more glance at the notes on the hieroglyph, hit the three harp strings in sequence, and at what he hoped was the right speed.

The moment he struck the last string, the three near the pedastals grabbed their items, and made a dash for the door. The party just barely exited the chamber as the door slid shut!

Then, there came a rumbling sound.

Gotaki acted fast! She opened a solid black gateway in the wall of the corridor and pushed the entire party through it! Seconds later, everyone tumbled out of Gotaki's tent in the camp!

The nearby ruins rumbled, then imploded in on itself, erupting a huge cloud of dust into the air. Then, the dust settled and all was quiet.

Alaya stood up and shook the dust off of her robes. "That was certainly exciting. However, I am now very suspicious about the items we have retrieved. Had I known how dangerous this trip was to be, a single wish would not suffice a payment for what we have just gone through. I want to study the items we now have and appraise them for lore and magical content."

Jake got up next and he too seemed agitated. "I couldn't agree more. I think an appraisal is highly necessary at this time."

King Enteus spoke next. "Appraising the items seperately might not glean you the results you may be seeking. I suggest that we assemble the item first, then appraise it. If I am right, I already know what this important item is."

Alaya turned to Enteus. "What do you think the item is?"

King Enteus replied, "I believe we are holding the scepter of wish granting."

Alaya, Jake and King Enteus labored over the three items for many hours, then finally, King Enteus held the scepter before him with one paw. King Enteus said, "Now, we need a test wish. Something that would be noticeable immediately."

Alaya smiled. "I have one. I don't consider it to be too selfish, and we would notice the effect right away. I wish for my spellbook to contain all of the spells of my specialist school, yet weigh no more than the spellbook weighs right now."

Everyone nodded their heads, agreeing that the given wish was not too selfish.

King Enteus spoke the command word for the scepter. The scepter glowed, then shot a ray of light at the spellbook! The ray lasted for only a moment.

Alaya opened her spellbook, and began thumbing through it. After an hour, she lifted her head with a smile. "Looks like your guess was right, King Enteus. We have the Scepter of Wish Granting."

King Enteus smiled and said, "I wish for the full truth behind the summit fiasco that wronged my father to be finally known to all people who are currently within the Sunset Cove Kingdom."

The scepter again glowed, and the ray enveloped the entire kingdom, as the knowledge stated is given to all the people within the kingdom.

| The truth of the matter was this: the weasel king and the rat king | had a friendly rivalry originally concerning each and every summit. | The rivalry involved a bet about a certain thing covering the | summit. Then one year, after having won so many bets year after | year, the weasel king lost a bet, and could not let it rest. The | rivalry was no longer a friendly one, but one of a deadly nature. | The weasel king arranged for an outcast rat ninja to sneak into the | next summit and assassinate the rat king. However, something went | wrong, and the ninja's arrow missed it's mark, striking another | king instead. The ninja was seen escaping and identified as a rat. | It was soon afterwards that the weasel king declared that the rat | king had to be at fault for the crime.

King Enteus sighed. "So that is what happened..."

Jago came over and placed a hand on Enteus' shoulder. "I'm sorry, Fletcher. I'm sure your father was a good rat. At least the truth is known now."

King Enteus smiled at Jago. "Is there a wish you'd like to have granted?"

Jago smiled. "One wish has already been granted. Being able to have been on a real adventure with the famed Rab Streambattle. But there is another wish that has been on my mind. And it concerns a certain little goat kid and his mother..."

To make a very long story short... (TOO LATE!)

Rab's party returned to the palace without delivering the scepter. Emperor Kimjihda welcomed King Enteus back into the summit with a full pardon, to which the other kings had to agree was appropriate.

King Lutraon and his son, Rab Streambattle, took a private stroll to discuss things of a nature concerning Rab's decisions. King Lutraon gave Rab permission to continue adventuring and to continue making such wonderful allies and friends, like the ones Rab had gathered this time.

Swifty and Jago spent a night out under the stars together. Jago was pleased that he had finally gained Swifty's trust. The two did not return to the palace until the following morning.

The next morning, King Lutraon announced that the summit would continue for another week. However, Gotaki, Damon, Devyn, Jago and Faroth were ready to return home. They were just entering the stable courtyard, when they saw Artemis half-standing on a hog-tied Ares and Jo Tanner next to Artemis offering to let Artemis use her branding iron. The others were also standing nearby.

Jago hugged Jonie, then asked, "What are you guys doing here?" Then he noticed that the person he thought was Dominic Vanlyone was actually Jansen Tanner. "Um, why is Jansen Tanner back again? Where is Dominic?"

Gotaki seconded the question. "Yes. Where is King Lion?"

The white stag stepped forward. "Dominic was almost killed by Ares. He is currently in Santa's Village at the North Pole. He's lucky that he remembered that he was wearing Robin Goodfellow's magic ring. He was able to transport himself out of Ares grasp and into a white reindeer's body. Dominic will rejoin us back at the mansion. As for Jansen Tanner, he is going to inform Dominic about something important, then hopefully..." The white stag shot icy mental daggers at Jansen. "...he will go back to where ever he was before all this started."

Jansen grinned. "After I tell Dominic the truth about himself and the Ra catch, I'll be heading out again. I am the real Jansen Tanner after all. There can only be one."

Jo piped up. "What?! You're going to leave again? But you just returned home! Why are you leaving?"

Jansen growled back at Jo. "Cassander Vulcan is an ivory graveyard thief, and if I stay in the same area as him for any length of time, he'll end up being murdered, and I'll make sure the whole area knows who did it!"

Gotaki smiled. "Imagine that. Jansen Tanner has some backbone after all. Maybe I was wrong about him." Gotaki opened the shadow gate back to the mansion, and everyone headed home. Artemis and Ares transported straight back to Olympus where a repeat humiliation with vorpal arrows occured.
