"Jake, wake up. You looked like you were having a nightmare" the furred figure said to her mate as she licked Jakes black furred muzzle.

Stretching and giving a whining yawn, Jake wrapped his arms round his love and nuzzled her neck tenderly "it's nothing my love. Just dreams of what we went through at that meeting and..." he trailed off as he thought to keep the other bit private for now.

Jake and Midnight had both been victims of a genetic virus that had been set upon the world. The symptoms were that of a virus like flu and then left the molecular structure unstable until they had 'acquired' a fresh sample of an animal's DNA to fill in the part that had been damaged.

The result usually ended up with the human retaining about 60% of his human form and the rest looking very canine like. Strangely the animals were less effected as they kept about 70% of their animal traits. "That is good my mate, I got worried you were coming ill" Midnight said happily. Her tail thumped the bed as she hugged back and buried her muzzle into his chest to breathe deep his scent.

After what had seemed an eternity inside that warehouse, and a number of other hidden institutes revealing themselves linked to the one their human friend Richard set up, they had been given lease into the public. But they had to stay within their given area and be kept under watch by members of what was now called the 'Humal Integration Movement'. A group had been formed by trusted members of the public to judge them if they were safe for release.

"I can't blame you my mate" Midnight spoke in her beautiful voice "after all it was very scary been out in front of all those people. I thought I was going to make a mess in public I was that frightened".

"I know, truth be told I felt a strong urge to bolt right out with my tail between my legs" Jake chuckled as he stretched on the bed, feeling his loved one run her paws over his strong, sleek furred body. That was one good upshot from this, like the rest he seemed to have attained the natural strength of the animal's form he took on, though for the humans it often showed more as muscle than in their animal counterparts.

Midnight opened her bright brown eyes and angled them so she was staring at Jake "I think you are much better on the eyes my mate. And you smell better too, you smell like a dog which means...I will be able to have pups with you when I go into what humans call heat".

Jake blushed, a human trait he had that their animal counterparts lacked though it could scarcely be seen through his black fur. "Yes well..." he paused as she began rubbing her muzzle up and down his body, her nostrils flaring wide as she breathe din his scent. "I-I think you may be entering heat now Midnight" he stammered as his ears twitched in nerves.

She pulled away before jumping off the bed "you don't want to have pups with me?" she whined sadly, her ears going flat and her tail hanging limp.

Jake mentally sighed, why couldn't they invent heat control pills whilst they were at it? Climbing off the bed, he smiled and mussed her head fur with a paw, earning a playful bark from Midnight. "I do my love. You know that I always thought about you when you were in the kennels. Just that, well to a human been a father is quite scary. Especially a first time father" he said, hoping she would understand. Last time he had mated with her Midnight had not been in heat, much to his relief.

"But...you are not human now" she said with an inquisitive tilt of her head at him. She, like most preferred to remain on all fours like they were used to. And to be honest with Jake it looked more natural to him.

He had to laugh at her logic "that is very true Midnight, but I am still in a very human way of mind. I know it is hard love, but just be patient with me please".

"...Okay" she said somewhat sullenly as she hopped back onto the bed with him.

Chuckling, he thought it best to get dressed to try and block some of his scent and take temptation away, she was starting to smell a little too good to him. The smell of the heat scent itself was not nice but the beginnings of it were starting to create stirrings in his fur covered pouch, the scent starting to work at his still relatively new canine side. Donning a custom cut white vest and shorts, each bearing a paw symbol to represent that they were for his kind he quietly sighed as it helped with his own urges.

Sitting down on the couch, he was acutely aware that Midnight was watching him closely; he daren't look into her eyes in case he gave in to his own feelings as well as her desire. He knew that she was looking for any signs that he might want to mate with her. "I know you are watching me Midnight" Jake chuckled as he felt her gaze on the back of his head before clicking the TV on.

"I-I'm not" she stuttered as she curled up on the bed and busied herself with her tongue. She had been watching, and wanted to try and persuade him but knew it was pointless, she wanted her master...mate to enjoy his first proper mating. I mean with ears that size it is bound to make hearing better than our useless ears for if you are blind. Her partner seemed a little protective and that does make me worry about if their nature is unpredictable and can be fully trusted. What made me worry the most though are the ones like that tiger girl and her partner. I mean tigers are crazy strong, and well...they are not going to be as welcomed I think due to their wild symbol. But Time will tell if they can show us they can behave like good kitties" he laughed at that last remark as an audible throat clearing could be heard from the reporter.

"Ahem yes, thank you. Well there you have it. Things are very early but I am sure all eyes were on the grand unveiling two days ago. It will be up to us all to see where they fit in with society. This is the seven O clock news, now back to the studio.*

"I can't BELIEVE that jerk!" a pretty white human tigress with a white ponytail fumed, switching off the TV and throwing the remote onto the couch. "That bastard deliberately targeted me! Does he have a problem with felines?"

"Elise, I think he makes sound logic given what I know of humans. And I think I know about as much as any real human due to been hand reared from a cub by the species" a large Siberian tiger said in a calm, soothing voice. His way of talking would remind one of a wise man if not for him been a tiger and his naivety.

"Oh, so I have to be penalised?" Elise growled lowly as she felt worked up for very little reason. She knew why she was so worked up, and she knew Tiger could get it also. She was pretty well into heat. Her pseudo heat left her just a month ago but her body seemed determined to go through the motions of been a female in a tiger's body.

Tiger just looked away forlornly with his ears pulled back "I am sorry there is nothing I can do," he said lowly. He was trembling; Tiger had to try so hard not to succumb to his instincts that he questioned why they had to be together. He loved Elise like nothing else but she just couldn't seem to discard of her feelings for Jake. He had tried but jealousy was a cruel mistress.

Bowing her head, Elise shook her head slowly before grabbing at her green jacket. It was designed with her type in mind as female humans when they changed sometimes carried more animal traits over than they should for some reason. In Elise's case aside from her own modest sized breasts she also had two more rows of smaller breasts that had to be taken into consideration for. "I'm off for a walk Tiger..."she paused at the door to look at him. She felt her heart ache at seeing him curled up and so forlorn looking. But if she did give in...and did she really love him?

Her tail dragging on the floor as Elise walked out the door, slamming it as she heard a sad growl from the big tiger. Her feelings pained and confused, she bolted for the elevator.

"This was supposed to become easier, but no. My body had to decide it wanted to breed suddenly" Elise fumed to herself as she stomped down the street. The dark clouds, crowds and scent of pollution did nothing to still her nerves either. People gave a bit of a birth to her as she stalked in no particular direction, her tail lashing and ears flicking back and forth her hormones played havoc with her mind.

"Aw, what a cute doggy" a child's voice sounded from around the corner. "Can I pet her Mr Dog man?"

"I think she can answer that herself can't you Midnight?" A familiar voice sounded before a light female voice replied.

"Oh wow, the cute black doggy can talk as well?" the child gushed before a woman's voice sounded for him to get away from them.

This rattled Elise as she rounded the corner and pretty much bumped into the woman "you know, you could try and be nice. Or are you deaf that we still can talk and have feelings?"

"Agh, get off me!" the female shouted as she hit her with her bag and ran with her child's hand in hers away from her.

"You know, I am just tempted to behave like an animal if they insist on treating us this way" Elise growled as her face fur fluffed in anger, her large sabre teeth bared in instinct.

"Elise? You won't be winning any favours like that" Jake's voice spoke up as he saw his friend.

"J-Jake" Elise stammered as his scent filled her nose, seeming to block out the foul, polluted stench of the city.

"What are you doing without Tiger?" he asked as Midnight sauntered by his side and pressed into him.

"Um...well he...I..." Elise fumbled for the words, but it was too shameful, too embarrassing.

"Hi Elise, I scent that you are entering heat also" Midnight put bluntly to the tigress, whimpering as Elise stared hard at her with eyes the colour of the blue sky.

"Midnight!" Jake scolded his mate before sighing "Sorry Elise, she still has something to learn about tact" he chuckled.

"It's okay. Me and Tiger just needed some space so I could think about...things" Elise faltered at the end.

She hoped Jake would not pick up on what she was on about but he was pretty sharp as his ears went half flat and he sighed "Elise, you know who my heart belongs to so please stop this" he spoke firmly.

"That's right...I forget you are in love with an animal. Maybe I should just give in to this heat and let the one I was forced with just mate me and breed me like his bitch, or whatever!" Elise fumed.

"Elise...why. I thought you had changed?" Midnight whined as she flattened herself and tried approaching her.

Elise looked first at Jake's disappointed stare and twisted away from it just to catch Midnights watery eyes. She couldn't take it, her hormones were so thrown out by her heat and she bolted away with a roar.

Curious onlookers quickly got out of the humal tigress's way as she tore off on fours and streaked down an alley.

"Jake...do you want to be with her? Be with your friend?" Midnight whimpered as she backed down from him. "I know I am just an animal really, you would be better and...

"Shut up!" Jake growled out not needing this right now. When she whined, tail between her legs and started crawling off she yelped in surprise when Jake flung his arms about her and hugged for all he was worth.

"Midnight...I chose you remember? I have always loved how loving and gentle you were to me, even as a dog. Please just be yourself and don't ever think again that I will leave your side" Jake whined back to her, his long furred tail curling around her

Tears formed in her eyes as she wrapped her paws round and shared in an embrace, something she was very thankful for been able to do in this form to express her feelings.

Those that were keeping a respectful distance after the white tiger had gone wild and shot off couldn't help but look on at this. Here was evidence they were not just animals, and some even smiled warmly at the loving pair. Here was not a pair of mindless beasts that looked human. They were feeling, loving beings.

Meanwhile down an alley way a white and black form lay on the dirty floor, curled up and shivering. She clutched at her head. Why? Just why was she so weak to keep letting old feelings surface and ruin things.

A feral cat strolled down the alley and meowed in a deep tone before rubbing round her in a friendly way. "Oh, h-hello there. I guess you can smell my heat also? Well then I guess I may as well let you in. I am nothing but a beast it would seem so go ahead" she laughed hysterically as she pulled her pants down to expose her moist slit.

Meowing in curiosity the feline sauntered to her white furred lips and sniffed curiously before running a small tongue over her pussy. Elise growled with need at the feeling of that tongue running over her puffy lips before the tom ceased and yowled loudly before streaking off. Opening her eyes and turning her head round, her eyes widened at the sight of what greeted her. It was two retrievers walking down. Both seemed to be standing up on two legs even though it was clear which one was more human and which was more animal.

"Lara...and Shadow...wasn't it?" Elise mumbled as she looked on at the pair.

Lara nodded her head, she didn't look like she had gained any extra animal based assets...it was so unfair Elise thought to herself. "Yes, that is right. Although we have not had as long to adapt Shadow has been very quick to catch on and help me understand" Lara smiled as she gripped the Retriever's sandy coloured paw. Her own fur more of a golden colour then her mate's.

"We scented you were in heat and great distress, though been a feline I have no interest thankfully but...well you should be careful. Luckily no other feline Humals are in the area but...you smell very distressed".

"Hmm, I was noticing that myself, where is your mate anyway? I don't scent him with you" Lara said as she took her nose to the air, her blind eyes closing as she focused.

"No...I...I am confused is all" Elise mumbled before staggering to her legs, her eyes glazing as the tumble of thoughts and feline instincts made her walk as though in a trance past them.

As though only just remembering she had her pants down, Elise drew them up, moaning as her over sensitive lips met the material. A hand landed on her shoulder suddenly "please...you should give him a chance" Lara's voice began before Elise snapped at her.

"Get OFF!" She roared, causing her to flinch away before staggering out of the valley and into the streets where people gave her a wide birth. Wouldn't you if you saw a pained crazed tiger?

Jake...Elise wanted Jake...there was no other man that she wanted other than him. Not some heat addled animal, not some obedient mutt or feline. She just...wanted...

Something mixed between a roar and a howl sounded very close by, a second later a warning came "watch out!" followed by been roughly shoved onto the floor as a blur of fur flashed over their heads.

A canine scent filled her nose as she turned her head to look "Jake?" She whispered before seeing a figure in the shape of a Retriever.

"No, sorry to disappoint. I know I have not much right saying so but I get the feeling your feelings are doing more harm than good" Tiger said in as reasoning voice as possible.

"Shadow, where are you, what is going on?" Lara cried out in the confusion. Her ears picked up the sound of growling too late, she turned round, the claws of the beast only mere inches away from her face before she was promptly shoved onto the floor. Growling in pain, her large canine skull smacked into the ground and stars flashed in front of the Retrievers eyes.

"Are you okay?" a kind sounding voice sounded from her ear. It was similar to her Shadow's but she could easily tell through scent and tone who it was.

"My head hurts a little but yes...I'm okay Jake" she answered with a wince and a clutch at her skull. Both their ears lifted at the sound as they heard two different growls from just to the side of them.

"Midnight!" Jake cried out as he recognised the growl. Whipping in the direction, he heard the sound of screeching tires as cars stopped just shy of the two humals scrapping in the middle of the road.

They all knew roughly who it was, part wolf and part puma made the almost all feral creature distinguishable from anything else. Her name was Julia, like them she had been a human, but unlike most she had got a potent dose of two different animal DNA's and had warped her mind, causing her to lose nearly all of her humanity.

"Calm. Calm please Julia!" Midnight cried out as she backed off, neatly avoiding a lunge for her throat from Julia's claws.

The creature that had used to be Julia stared at her, one brown eye and one yellow stared back as she seemed to try and struggle for control before gripping at her skull and howling. The wild look was back in her eyes and before Midnight could react, she lashed out and clawed a chunk of fur and skin out of Midnight's black furred side.

Whimpering in pain, Midnight recoiled and just dodged another swipe before darts thudded into the feral minded Julia. A dart jutting from her back as she twitched and growled lowly, a whimper escaping before poor Julia passed out.

Jake rushed over to Midnights side, stooping over and picking her up in his strong arms. "Midnight you stupid girl. What were you thinking of?" He said in a worried filled voice for her.

"I was...trying to protect my friends" she whimpered in his arms and nuzzled into his neck, seeking comfort from the pain as her side bled.

"There are bandages at the hotel room my love, just put your paw on the wound until we get there" he said as a mixture of humals and humans came to retrieve the twitching Julia.

"Sorry about this guys, she seemed to be making recovery but then she snapped and managed to escape with our guard down" a handsome human turned humal panther said as he looked down in shame.

"It's alright Derek, it wasn't your fault" Jake said before he noticed a load of angry eyes from the humans staring at them.

"We are supposed to welcome animals like you lot into humanity?" a guy said from the angry crowd.

"I would never trust such creatures as you to come anywhere near my children" a mother said as she held the hand of a toddler who was trying to pull for them.

"This is getting ugly, I'll escort you lot to your rooms to be safe" Derek said as he and a group made sure the crowd didn't get too near or out of hand.

In the van, the mood was tense and no one said much. Midnight snuggled up to Jake, whining and sighing happily. Elise looked on in envy and ground her fangs silently in envy as Lara looked on in pity at her.

"Jake...Jake listen. Could we maybe just try going out and see..."

Jake held up his hands to halt her before sighing and curling his tail round Midnight. "Elise...Midnight is my mate and my love. If you will not see that then we have nothing else to say" he said sadly to her as they pulled up at their shared flats.

They departed from the van in silence before the white tigress felt a hand upon her shoulder. "Elise, I don't claim to know you all that well. And I don't claim to know just what went on with you and Jake" Julia said in a calm, even voice. "But from what I know, our animal mates make as good of lovers as any human, and I can tell from the brief time I met Tiger at the clinic that he is a rare sort. Don't push him away otherwise you will end up all alone, and no one wants that" she said before stroking a hand across the stricken Elise's face.

Everyone else parted with Elise staring at the floor feeling completely lost. Derek was about to approach her when his mate and partner's paw went on his shoulder. Shaking her head, he understood she had to do this alone. Anything anyone would say would make it worse.

Elise sat outside on a bench just on a small green patch near the flats until it went dark. She felt cold to her soul. She wanted to discard her feelings for Jake but how when she had secretly loved him so long? Even her fur couldn't stop her from shivering as her heart felt cold and numb, wracked with indecision and confusion.

Taking the lift up, she didn't know what to do or even say to Tiger. Things had started going well between them but every time she saw Jake her old feelings resurfaced. But she had to say sorry, Tiger didn't deserve to be hurt for something that wasn't his fault.

Walking into the small apartment, Elise clicked the lights on "Tiger? Tiger, I'm sorry for hurting you. I just need more time. Please understand my feelings for Jake run deep" she said into the empty room.

Upon entering and closing the door though she froze in her tracks. Spattered on the rug was crimson drops of blood, the sheets torn, the furniture tossed and claw marks here and there. "My...god..." Elise gasped as she saw a dead body on the floor of a human. "No...Tiger wouldn't have done this without a reason" she reasoned to herself before shaking her head to clear it.

Whipping out of the room she thought to go and tell Jake and the rest she knew but..."no. This is my fault. I need to clear this up" she said to herself as she raced down the stairs from the 8th floor. She had no time for the elevator as she reached the ground floor in under a minute.

Racing out of the door, she had no idea as to where to look but she had to do something. "If I hadn't been so stupid then...please be safe Tiger" Elise thought as she ignored the jeering of been a beast as she ran on fours.

"Leave me alone, what did I ever do wrong to you?" Tiger growled out as he ducked just as a bullet whizzed by his head.

"You...killed my friend you abomination!" The man spat as he held a gun pointed his way. He was a stocky man of about 30 with short blond hair and a short beard.

"What did you expect me to do, you two came barging in screaming about this god you worship and try to kill me" he said in as reasoning tone as he could.

"And right we are, you beasts are an affront to god and creation and should be wiped out before you can spread your filth around". He gave a demented smile, his eyes filled with lust for his blood and fired another shot.

In such a small alley Tiger had limited room to move about and this time his ankle got nicked by the bullet. He fell onto the ground on all fours before wincing and holding his bleeding hind left leg of the floor "this seems to be a bad habit of mine" he observed calmly as he looked up at the man. "Go ahead, finish it. Without Elise I am more alone then any creature should be so I have no fear" he said before throwing his head back and roaring, revealing his neck to him for the shot.

"Goodbye you hideous beast" he smiled cruelly, the words Tiger had said seemingly lost on him as he pulled the trigger.

A loud bang sounded and the sound of a bullet thudding into brick sounded. Opening his eyes and lowering his head, Tiger looked in surprise as he found he was still alive. "How...?" he stopped as he saw Elise with her clawed hands wrapped round his throat, the deadly claws puncturing and piercing the throat and strangling any scream he may have made.

Elise's eyes were of an enraged beast as she had witnessed and heard their exchange. He loved her, he truly wanted her not just for breeding or because they were lumped together. "If there are scum...it is people like you...who kill without reason" Elise snarled through clenched fangs. Her eyes boring into the dying mans before she released him, his body crumpling to the floor.

Breathing heavily, she stared on at Tiger. The large Siberian tiger limped on three legs up to her and the pair locked eyes, Elise's blue met yellow before she cried out and ran on all fours to him, wrapping her arms round his thick furred neck and locked muzzles as best she could in a passionate kiss. "Tiger...I have been such a stupid bitch" Elise cried out into his fur.

Smiling, Tiger draped a paw round her shoulder and licked her muzzle "there I thought a bitch was only a female dog". His tone was playful despite the wound which Elise kept her hand on to stop the bleeding, her white fur turning crimson with the blood.

Elise shook her head, ears pulled far back as she held him tight to her. She was deaf to the sirens as the police pulled up and whipped out their guns "alright humals, freeze! Put your hands up and turn towards us slowly now" a cop shouted through a loud speaker to the pair.

"Elise...we had better do as we are told" Tiger said softly as he went to his three good paws and limped slowly towards them.

Suddenly Elise was in front of him, her arms spread wide to shield him from any other harm "no...he is not to blame. Just take me" Elise said, her blue eyes seemed to light up each time the police sirens light struck them.

"No can do miss" the cop with the loud speaker said with a tightening hand on his gun in case she got any thoughts. "Squad two, cuff them and bring them back to the station for questioning and squad three, investigate thoroughly this alley and the other dead body at home. Contact their handler...Richard to let him know what has transpired. And get a bandage on the tigers paw whilst we are at it".

Four hours later, a thin man in gold spectacles strode up to their cell. "Well, I think it is safe to say that things could have gone better" he said in a soft voice to the pair. "But the upshot is you two finally seem to be hitting it off" he smiled as he saw Elise and Tiger cuddled up to each other in the cell.

"Good to see you Richard" Tiger said with feeling.

"How is your paws Tiger?" Richard said with a concerned look at him, something akin to anger in his voice.

"What do you think?" Elise growled lowly out, anger had been building inside of her for her race, or rather what had been her human race.

"Elise, Richard isn't our enemy" Tiger cautioned her with a paw on a furred shoulder.

Scritching his head Elise smiled slightly "no, I guess he isn't. Sorry Richard" Elise said with an apologetic look in her eyes.

"It's okay, I don't blame you. You have all been through tough times and more are likely to come. But we need to start showing the people what you are all about, they need to see just how valuable you are" he started before they were interrupted.

"Okay Richard, you and your humals have been cleared for lease" the warden said as he handed a slip of paper to him. "But you may want to think about future plans" with that he walked them to the station exit.

"W-what does he mean?" Elise said, her tail swishing in anxiety about the meaning of his words.

"There have been...falsified accusation of those against humals. People have been showing bite wounds and claw marks that I know could only be made by an animal, but the public is ignorant and are more willing to believe their own rather than a bunch of 'quacks'". Richard's voice was calm but there was a tinge of weariness in it.

"Things...are already falling apart aren't they?" Elise said mournfully, hanging her head and slouched her furred shoulders.

Bumping her leg, Tiger gave a small chuff to comfort her "Elise, it isn't over yet. I am sure Richard has ideas too right?" Tiger said with a hopeful glance in his direction.

Nodding slightly, the human gave his head a fond ruffle and smiled "we have. We are waiting for the results and then we will launch a campaign for humals. We will broadcast and film how they truly are and also get the reports on the truth why the two humans were killed".

Elise looked away at this, feeling remorse despite she knew they tried to kill her and Tiger. "Elise, they made their own deaths when they fought they could kill two tigers. If we hadn't they would have killed us, so please...don't think about it". Tiger said, wishing he could stand up and hold her as a true human lover would. But his back paw been injured made that impossible to. All he could offer her was his closeness as he pressed into her, Elise's hand trailing in his fur and a tear forming in her blue eye in appreciation.

"Why is it some can be so nasty and others so nice. I thought I knew humans but now I don't think so" Midnight grumbled back at their apartment. Tiger and Elise had made it home fine and been left to rest from the day's events. But the next morning they had been dragged into Jakes and Midnight's apartment and been subjected to a lot of hugs and comforting words.

"It is my fault Elise, if I hadn't phoned up the police would not have come to investigate. But I saw the state of the room and had to do something" Jake said with his hand on her own.

The sight to a human would have struck as very odd indeed, a pair of German Shepherd's and two tigers definitely made for an odd combo. Since their TV had been broken by the tussle in their room, Elise and tiger had to watch Jake's.

"And thus I assure you that the humals are no more a danger to us then you or I are. They are not wild animals that would randomly attack people nor do they behave completely like them. Remember, they both share our genetic make. It wasn't their choice and they have suffered a lot through their change so let's try and make them welcome instead of making them the enemy". Richard said on the Eight-0-Clock news.
