R-Day v2K
"Oh my
gosh, this is so darn boring." Frostbite seemed to hiss out the words as he
said them. I was in agreement, I loved Chemistry, physics, or any other type of
science, but homework was still that. Homework."Ugh," I sighed. "Well, it could be worse. We could have homework on top of
this," I added. I was doing most of the work anyway, mostly because it was easy
enough. It was just so much to do. I had been reading through a chemistry book,
loaned to me by the librarian, but I just couldn't seem to find what I was
looking for in it."I still
don't like projects," Snapped Frost, looking at the clock a bit frustrated. I
was starting to become more and more drowsy, and from the look of it, so was
Frost. I grabbed the edge of the book and slammed it as hard as I could closed,
causing Frost to jump back a bit. I sat back, chuckling with Frost at the scare
I gave him, but it was short-lived. Frost seemed to stare off into space, and
asked silently with a sigh, "Don't you sometimes wish something awesome would
happen?""Like What?
I asked curiously."Hmm..."
Sighed Frost, "I dunno."Just as I
was about to speak that we should probably just go home, there was a loud voice
behind me. "The library is closing, you two," Boomed the librarian, nearly
causing me to leap out of my chair. Frost obviously knew she was there, because
he was laughing, nearly in tears at what had just happened. "Ugh." I sighed
displeased at my own misfortune. I guess that's what I get for trying to scare
him earlier. We both stood up, and slowly left the library, talking and playfully
nudging each other, until we got outside. We split up outside. Our houses were
in opposite directions from the library, but still within walking distance.I finally
reached my house, shoved the key into the knob, and silently entered. As soon
as I had opened the door, our pet husky ran out. That was fine, usually he was
asleep by now, but apparently someone had to have a mid-night potty break. I
would have to let him back in later, so I walked into the dark living room, and
sat on the couch. I still wasn't quite tired yet. Usually a nice walk at night
time makes me more awake, rather than sleepy. I flipped on the flat screen in
front of me, and setting the volume on its lowest level, as to not wake up my
parents, I started slowly flipping through the channels. I stopped when I saw a
news channel. It had to have been a cut scene for some horror movie, so I
thought it might be an interesting watch. It had been a few minutes now, so I
decided to go check on the dog. As I opened the door, I saw him just standing
there, out in the grass, staring at me. It was strange, normally he would have
just ran back in, settled down, and passed out. However, this time, he just
stared. I walked up to him, grabbed his collar, and tried to walk him back to
the house. After a second of him trying to firmly plant himself on the ground,
and seeming to try to lead me in the opposite direction, he finally gave up,
and padded back into the house with me. I shut the door behind myself, while
the dog just padded off somewhere in the house. When I reached the couch again,
I noticed that the channel I thought was some horror film was still on the news
part. I checked again, and realized that this wasn't a film. This was the
Channel 4 News."BEEEP,
BEEEP, BEEEP. THIS IS THE EMERGENCY BROADCAST SYSTEM, THIS IS NOT A TEST"
"BEEEP, BEEEP, BEEEP. THIS IS THE EMERGENCY BROADCAST SYSTEM, THIS IS NOT A --"
"High levels of radiation..." The news reporter broke in, "...have been reported
originating from the Muslim nuclear strike against Australia. Rumors have been
reported that Muslim counties were testing a prototype missile that
accidentally struck a reserve of nuclear material, which was being covered up
by the Australian government."The
reporter continued going on about how and why this happened, but I had already
grabbed the phone nearby. I dialed up Frost, and waited for him to answer. He
barely had time to say Hello before I broke in. "Frost, have you seen the
news?" I questioned questionably."Yeah, I
have." He continued, "My parents are being as unbelievable as usual. Do you
think they are right?" "I doubt it, I mean, this just doesn't seem like the kind of thing a
professional news station would joke about, even if It is April." I said.Frost
sighed on the other end of the line, but continued. "I suppose you have a
point. How do you think this'll work out?"Ugh," I
sighed. If this was for real, I guess I did have an idea. "My guess would be we
all die of radioactive poisoning. Either that or we'll mutate beyond
recognition.""How long?"
Questioned Frost."A day? A
week? Maybe even months." I continued, "This isn't a definite thing."I could
hear Frost give a slow sigh on the other end, as he said, "Tis true. Anyway,
its getting pretty late. We can figure this all out tomorrow. Goodnight." He said.
I gave the same goodbye and hung up. I flipped
off the TV, and headed off to my room. Our husky pet was sitting in the corner
of my room. He usually slept in my room, probably because my parents didn't
really care as much as I did for him. He wouldn't move for the longest time. He
looked as though he was trembling in horror, and i couldn't help but think that
maybe this really wasn't a joke. Maybe something really bad was about to
happen. The dog padded to my bed and jumped up. I assumed that he didn't want
to go through this alone. I couldn't blame him. I didn't either. Still
listening to the soft whines and growls of my dog, I eventually passed out. When I
awoke, it was already daytime. It was Saturday already, and I was still in a
half-asleep mode. I felt more tired than I had before. Usually I can wake up
and be good to go, but today felt as if I had been hit in the chest with a
baseball bat. No big deal, I mean, its not like I had anything else to do
today. I could hear what sounded like either my mom or dad in the kitchen,
probably cooking breakfast or something. Good, I was kind of hungry now. I
quickly hopped out of my bed, and as soon as my paws touched the ground..."Wait... Paws?," I questioned. I couldn't help to collapse on the carpeting of my
floor. I looked down, now almost fully awake. What once had been my feet, were
now furry, pure white paws, with short black claws, and black pads on the
bottom. I had fell on some sort of pillow, but when I went to grab it I noticed
it wasn't a pillow. I had a tail! It was a huge fluffy black topped husky tail,
and the lower half was pure white."What the
hell?" I said. This was weird, but awesome. Apparently whatever radiation was
traveling from Australia had already gotten here. It had to of contained intense
amounts of some form of mutation element. My guess was it had fused me and my
loving pet husky together. The fact that my pet was nowhere to be seen slightly
supported that theory.I could
hear, with what I now realized were two pointy dog ears, that whoever was in
the kitchen was now making their way to the sound I was making. I wondered, if
this happened to me, what got to my parents? I opened my door, and walked out.
I couldn't be sure that whatever happened to whoever was in the house was a
good thing. Next to my room door, there was a closet type room, where my
parents had stockpiled food, and other supplies when people used to think the
world would end. I never believed them. There had been so many dates that it
could have, and so many times nothing happened, but apparently they were right,
they just couldn't get the date right. I rummaged through the closet and
grabbed a machete from the back. It would be quicker to use, and most of the
other weapons we had stored would be too big, or too loud. I paced closer to
the noise in the house, and just as I turned the corner, I saw my parents. They
weren't exactly my parents anymore, but one huge blob of disgusting skin and
muscle. Whatever this monstrosity was, it had obviously been my parents, who
had been fused together, and torn apart many times over. I doubted that my
parents were still in that blob of ugliness, but I couldn't help but feel a bit
of pain in the fact of what I knew had to be done. If my parents were in there,
they wouldn't have wanted to stay like this, and if they weren't, it was making
too much noise, and could attract others. I knew where I would strike already.
Sever the heads, and it should stop moving was my guess.I sprinted,
faster than I thought was possible, toward the beast, almost flipped over the
counter, and shoved the sharp blade in the neck of what looked to be my mother.
Passing all the way to the other side of the room, I noticed that the head came
clean off, and the left side of the blob had stopped moving now, slowing it
down, even more than it had been moving. It hurt, not just the blob, but me,
knowing that even though it had to be done, I had just killed my mother. Before
the grief could take hold, I sprinted again, this time to the other head, and
sliced it clean off. Either the blade was extremely sharp, or the formation had
been made weaker, but either way, I didn't care. I couldn't think about this
anymore.I walked to
my room, grabbed a small travel bag, and my backpack. Back at the closet, I
rummaged through it and collected various food cans that weren't marked to
expire for a few years. I added them to the travel bag, and set it down beside
me. I filled my backpack with water bottles, and a few of the smaller survival
tools, such as a hand axe, a few pocket knives, and para-cord, my favorite tool
to use, just in case. I reached back to the bigger weapons, and grabbed a
katana, which we had acquired as a gift. It was still in great condition, it
wasn't made to be a decoration piece either. It was a real hard-steel blade. I
also grabbed two small boxes, one of which contained a small handgun, the other
full of .22 ammo."Always
good to have a backup, I guess." I said quietly. I quickly took a compound bow,
with a few sharp-pointed arrows, and the machete, which I cleaned off from the
fight."All set."
I told myself as I grabbed the bags I had filled, and attached the weapons to
them. I headed out of the house, giving one last glance at it, before I stared
running off to Frost's house. I was weighed down by all the bags, but I was
still making great speed. I was sure I could run twice as fast as I was now, if
I needed to. Enjoying my new-found speed, I became lost in thought and only was
broken from my trance when I had almost crashed into some type of anthro-cat. "Frost?" I
yelled.
