The futility of War

Story by spring87 on SoFurry

All around me

they lay screaming and shouting

for some of those here

this is their final outing

bullets rip through the air

with a whistling sound

Another scream

another body on the ground

I hear the sound of

a chattering machine gun

Each bullet taking

the life of another

father, brother, uncle or son

I am a medic,

alone on the ground

my fallen comrades

make no sound

The futility of war

I can see,

my fellow group

relying on me.

i run to the latest one

that has fallen

i can hear the shouts

of everyone calling

I close his wounds

he is frightened

his bullet wounds

between my hands are tightened

Trying to help him

as best as I can

he passes away

before I can

Looking up denying my death

I cradle his head

as he takes

his final breath

I hold the brave one close

and I gently cry

wht does the young

have to die!
