This is the start of I series I plan to write. It will based partially in the new Pokemon x and y universe, but with my own spin on the world. This is the first time I'm happy with what I've written and I hope you enjoy it.

The sun shined into the room brightly. Uncomfortably bright. I groaned quietly and pulled the covers over my head. "It was WAY too early for this" I thought bitterly, "I'm going back to bed." I shut my eyes and tried to relax and fall back asleep.

After about five minutes, I gave up trying to fall asleep and slowly got out from under the blankets. I grabbed the clock on the beside table and pulled it closer to me. "6:30?!?!" I shouted in surprise. "Why am I up this EARLY?!" I set the clock back down and grumbled quietly. "I guess I'm just nervous.... Or excited..... Probably both." I stood up slowly and stretched out my arms.

I certainly didn't feel any different than any other day. I sure as hell didn't feel like an adult, despite the fact I'm now 18. All I really wanted to do was crawl back into bed and sleep the day away. But turning 18 is a big deal for everybody. A REALLY big deal. Now that I'm 18, it's time for me to leave home and go out to see the world. Everyone does it. My mom did. My professor definitely did. And now it was my turn.

I walked over to my wardrobe and pulled out the only pair of clothes I had left. Boxers, jeans, a plain t-shirt, and a jacket. Everything else was already packed in a backpack and ready for me to go. Mom made sure of that. I grabbed my bag and headed on downstairs.

I set my bag down as I passed by the front door and walked into the kitchen. Mom was already making breakfast.

"Morning." I yawned.

"Morning birthday boy!" She said, smiling. "You're up early."

"Well wouldn't you be?"

She laughed warmly, "Are you kidding? I didn't get any sleep the night before my birthday. I'm glad you were able to get some."

"Me too," I laughed. "So what's for breakfast?"

"Your favorites," she said as she handed me a plate. "French toast and eggs."

"You know me too well" I said as I sat down at the table.

"I'd better! You've lived here for 18 years now."

Conversation died down as we began to eat.

"Oh man am I full," I groaned.

"I told you to slow down."

"Heh. You're right, I should've. Bit too anxious, I think."

"I know I was when it was my time." She glanced over to the clock mounted on the wall. "Is it 8:00 already? You'd better get going! Can't keep Professor Birch waiting!" She hurried me to the door, gave me a quick hug goodbye, and sent me on over to visit Professor Birch.

I could easily see the professor's lab from the front door, but it was still quite a walk to get there. The lab was by far the biggest building in Chestwood, but there wasn't all too much competition. There were maybe ten houses total and the town was barely a square mile big. Most of that space was yards. People did like their space. Most of the houses were one or two story houses, not much bigger than a few rooms on each floor. What they lacked in indoor space, they more than made for in outdoor space. There were quite a few trees planted around town. A few were even big enough to hold a tree house up inside their branches.

Not much was going on as I walked on over to the professor's lab. Most people were probably still waking up. I enjoyed the silence as I walked on by. It was peaceful. It allowed me to organize my thoughts more before I met with Professor Birch. What all I wanted to ask him before I went on my way. What all he might have to tell me. And most importantly, the scope of my entire journey. What all I was going on to do. And who all I was going to meet.

By the time I reached the lab, I was more excited and nervous than before. The lab was definitely the biggest building around. It's white metal walls extended out for a good 50 feet each side. The building was three stories tall and the windows shone as the morning sun reflected off of them. Behind the building were the fields. And the fields themselves extended out past the horizon. And in the fields were every kind of pokemon you could imagine. And some you couldn't. I would get to choose one to accompany me on my journey. I turned away from the sight of the fields and pushed the doors open to where Professor Birch was waiting.

Professor Birch greeted me with a nod before launching into his speech.

"Ah Chris. Glad to see you're on time this morning. You know how big of a day this is don't you? Of course you do. Everyone knows how important the beginning of their pokemon adventure is. Now, follow me upstairs. We have some business to take care of before you choose your first pokemon." Birch spoke quickly, barely even taking a breath between his sentences. He turned and gestured at me to follow him. We walked quickly up to the second floor and into his office. Birch took a seat behind his desk and I took the other seat.

"Please excuse the mess." He motioned at the papers strewn about his desk.

"Don't worry about it. You should've seen my room." I replied.

"Hah, I don't think I would want to," He laughed. "Anyway, first things first. In case of any emergency, here's my number." He handed me a business card with his name and number on it. "I know people all around Kalos so I may be able to get you a place to stay, a helping hand, or whatever you may need. Next, here's a pokedex." He said as he passed over the device. "It'll identify any pokemon you may run into and tell you some basic facts about them. It'll also record which pokemon you have seen." I looked at the device in my hands. It had a classic pokeball design on it, opening into a solid screen. Birch informed me that it was a touch screen and I could control it with my finger. I turned and slipped into my backpack before Birch continued.

"Alright, so now that that is out of the way. You are about to go on an incredible journey," Birched explained. "You are going to meet many people and many pokemon. This journey is all about you and your decisions. You want to go take on the Gym Leaders? Go right ahead. You just want to travel around with your pokemon? That's perfect. You want to become a pokemon breeder or maybe even a professor? Wonderful. This journey is all about you and what you want to do."

I nodded quietly. "I know Professor. I've been anxious about this day for quite awhile now." Birch stood up and walked around his desk.

"Glad to hear it. Now let's get down to the important part. Choosing a pokemon."

The field was even larger than I thought. I couldn't even fathom how far it reached. Professor Birch must have noticed my shock.

"Quite a sight isn't it?" He asked.

"Y-Yeah. It's huge," I stammered. "How am I supposed to find a pokemon I like in all this room?"

"Already ahead of you," Birch replied as he hopped into a truck. "I'll drive us around the enclosure and we'll stop if you see anyone you like." I climbed in after him and we were off before I could even get the seatbelt on.

The enclosure was absolutely stunning. There was more to it than I could've imagined. At first I thought it was just fields and ponds. But now I could see the forest in the distance and the lake running along side of it. According to Birch, there was even a desert beyond that. And part of the mountains past that.

We passed through the fields quietly, though the pokemon still shied away from the truck. There were Tauros and Miltanks roaming the fields. I'm sure there were other pokemon, but they were probably hiding from the noise of the truck. As we passed by a couple of ponds I saw a few Marills and even a couple Azumarills among the reeds and swimming through the water.

Before I knew it, we had reached the forest and the lake. We drove alongside both, allowing me to see both sides. In the forest, a couple of Aipoms swinging through the branches. Metapods and Kakunas hung from the branches, waiting on their evolution. A couple of Skiddo scattered deeper into the forest as they heard us drive by. On the other side, a few Lapras swam in formation until a Gyarados broke the surface and forced the Lapras to swim around him. A couple of Krabby walked along the beach, occasionally picking up shells or whatever else they found interesting. A Kingler sat on top of a pile of shells, clearly being the boss of the Krabby.

And all too soon the forest thinned out and was replaced by sand. The lake came to a shore and the shore seemed to extend out to merge with the desert. Scattered throughout the desert were Cacnea and Cacturnes, all enjoying the dry sands. Occasionally, the ground was broken by a Diglett hole, where a Diglett had dug up to the surface. A couple of the holes had Digletts poking up out of them. Other holes had become home to Trapinchs, waiting to catch something else unaware.

And once again the desert began to slope upwards becoming a mountain before I had realized. As Birch and I drove by, Gravelers roamed the rocks on errands only they knew. A few of the rocks weren't even rocks. I recognized a few of them as Boldores, although they seemed to be asleep. The mountain side was much more sparsely populated than the other environments that Birch had set up. We reached the extent of the enclosure and Birch turned the truck around, driving back to the lab.

"So.... See anyone you like?" Birch asked me once we got out of the truck.

I sighed. "Not really.... I kinda want to find someone different. Someone special and unique."

"All pokemon are unique and special in their own ways Chris. You just need to find out what makes them so special," Birch explained.

"Yeah I guess you're righhh....." I trailed off. I saw a small pokemon hiding against the corner of the building. She was maybe 2 feet tall and looked as light as a child. She had blue fur with black markings along her limbs and on her ears. She hid further against the building as she saw me staring at her. Professor Birch followed my gaze and explained.

"That's a Riolu. She's very shy and extremely defensive if she thinks you are a threat. And she's willing to defend herself. I have the bruises to prove it. But if she likes you, she can create a very powerful psychic bond with you. And you'll become very close friends."

I nodded my thanks and slowly walked over to her. As I got close she turned her back against the wall and faced me, bearing her fists at me. I stopped moving and held my hands up, showing that they were empty. And that's how we stood for a few minutes, waiting for the other to make a move. Eventually she put her paws down and sat down, keeping her back against the building and her face toward me. I slowly restarted my approach, and sat down a few feet away from her.

"Hey. I'm Chris," I greeted her, holding my hand out to her.

"Rio....Lu?" She responded staring at my hand. I left my hand close to her, not moving it in either direction. She poked at my hand with hers. I still didn't move. And then she pounced. She tackled my hand to the ground with all her weight. I wasn't expecting something so sudden and heavy as she pulled me over onto the ground. As soon as I hit the ground, she jumped from my hand onto my back.

"Rioluuuuu!" She exclaimed. I turned my head back to Professor Birch who was smiling to himself. Apparently I'm faring better than he did. After a minute, the pressure disappeared from my back and I slowly sat up. Riolu was standing in front of me, looking content with herself. Before I could do anything else, she walked forward and sat top of my lap, leaning back against my chest.

"Rio." I gently started rubbing her ears as she relaxed against me.

"I take it she likes me?" I asked Birch.

"I believe so yes. It certainly seems that way. Is she who you want for your first pokemon?" Birched asked back.

"Yes. I'm sure."

"What are you going to name her?"

"Hmmmmm," I paused for a minute, thinking. Suddenly, the thought hit me with a name. "Momo. She's Momo." The moment I said her name out loud I suddenly felt her. Her thoughts imprinted onto mine and I could hear her thoughts going through my mind.

"Christopher‾" Her thoughts sang.
