Chapter 2

Gryphon continued down the corridor towards the eating quarters thinking about what had just happened. "Well at least he realizes this isn't natural for me." Gryphon thought to himself as he continued, foot paws making a slight pounding rhythm as he progressed.

Gryphon walked down the winding corridors, gazing out the ship long window. The stars radiated their mystifying glow illuminating the inky blackness that was space. He stopped for a second just to gaze out into the void, letting his thought roam. Eventually his hunger got the best of him and he shook his head before proceeding towards his destination, which just so happened to contain food.

Not long later he arrived at the large sliding doors that signified the entrance to the eating quarters of the starship "Threshold". The doors slid open with a soft hiss, allowing Gryphon to step into the brightly lit room. The eating quarters were basically a kitchen and dining room but for lack of a better name they were called quarters. There was an assortment of counters all laid out in an aesthetically pleasing style with a small island where food could be placed once it was prepared. There was a cryogenic freezer that allowed organic food to be stored almost indefinitely and a de-frostier that basically nuked the stuff until it was edible again.

Avin was standing at the stovetop stirring a pot of sauce, while at the same time flipping a pancake in a pan causing little hissing and popping noises to emerge from the pan's surface as the raw batter cooked. Avin was the only other wolf onboard the ship besides Gryphon. He stood fairly high being about five feet eleven inches tall. He had soft but brilliant green eyes, which always conveyed the feeling of caring and tenderness. His fur was awkward, being jet black near his skin, dark grey about halfway through the hair, and pure white at the tips. But it was the blue portion of his fur that was interesting, it seemed so white that if he was seem in sunlight his fur seemed to be tinged with an icy, shade of sky blue.

"It's about time you got down here, I thought you had gone catatonic." Avin said looking over his shoulder, while still stirring the sauce, too look into Gryphons eyes directly. "Well I was a little...distracted." Gryphon said glancing in Jet's direction. The felines eyes gazed at a daily report that the ships computer printed out displaying all of the vital and technical specifics of the ship's operation. Although Gryphon could tell that Jet pretended not to notice or acknowledge Gryphon looking at him his tail clearly said otherwise. It flicked back and forth under the table with Jet averted his gaze at anything but Gryphon. "Well sit down, I'm almost done." Avin said taking plates, and utensils out of the cupboards and drawers.

Avin set them down on the small island counter and began putting pancakes onto them. He took the sauce off of the element and poured it into a crystal dish. The aroma of it floated to Gryphons nose as he sat facing Jet, trying not to touch him at all. When he finally couldn't resist the smell any longer he gave in and turned to face Avin. "Hey, Avin, what is that smell? It's driving me crazy." Gryphon said taking a deep breath of the air, letting the sweet scent fill his nose. Avin chuckled and turned around, "Well it just so happens to be my famous, rasp-strawberry sauce which you just so happen to get to try today." He finished with a wink before carrying all of the food over to the table. Gryphon began to flick his tail in anticipation of the food that his stomach so hungrily desired.

"Alright, everyone eat up!" Avin said sitting down at his own seat picking up he utensils and digging into the food. "This is so good." Gryphon said sitting there for a while after his first bite to savor the taste. "Well I'm glad you enjoy it." Avin said grinning broadly.

Jet sat there saying nothing contemplating his own inner thoughts. "He resents me." He thought to himself, consuming his food without interest. "Why was I so stupid, He's not gay and I doubt he every will be." Jet said inwardly feeling his mood deflate dramatically. "I'm so dumb." Jet said slumping a little farther forward in his seat.

"Okay everyone, get ready, we're gonna land soon." Jet's voice came over the intercom. Gryphon left his room, and walked onto the bridge where he saw Jet sitting at the controls preparing them to take the star ship Threshold out of orbit and into one of Corithane's main spaceports. Gryphon gazed out of the front windshield at the huge planet. "Welcome to Corithane, the inner systems largest and most densely populated planet." Jet said maneuvering the spacecraft into the planets atmosphere and into a spaceport without difficulty. "Alright everyone get you suits on, Jet you know the drill." Avin said pulling the Desolist uniform. Gryphon followed suite and soon they had the handcuffs around Jet's wrists, and were preparing to leave the ship.

"Just because it worked on Earth doesn't mean it will work here." Jet grumbled angrily as Gryphon and Jet pulled him along, before he was searched quite thoroughly by the spaceport guards. "Hey, watch where you're frisking their buddy." Jet said as the guard spent a rather long time making sure there was nothing in Jet's crotch except his sheath and balls. The guard gave Jet a wink and let them pass through. Gryphon just rolled his eyes and they continued onward.

"So where are we gonna stay?" Jet asked everyone once they had ditched the uniforms, and handcuffs so that they wouldn't seem so suspicious talking. "Don't worry, I know someone who lives in this area." Avin said replying to Jet's previous question. They pushed through the bustling crowds. Most of which were furs like them making it a little easier to walk without being worried that someone would try and kill you. "All right I guess we'll stay there for now." Gryphon said following Avin towards the unknown house they'd be staying in.

"Hey mission, it's me Avin, you think I could stay with you for awhile?" Avin said into the phone receiver, the three of them packed into the small phone booth. It was raining slightly outside and no one wanted to get his fur wet. Gryphon's tail had developed a cramp and Jet was uncomfortably close to Gryphon. "Okay, thanks a lot! We'll be right over." Avin hung up the phone. "We'll we got a place to stay tonight. Now if we could just find away to get outta this thing without anyone breaking a tail we'll be set." Gryphon looked at Jet and Jet sighed. He began to move towards the door and carefully slid out of the tiny booth. "There now that, that ordeal is dealt with we can get moving." Avin said beginning to walk towards the street corner. "Oh yay we get to walk." Jet said his ears flattened against his head in aggravation. Avin shook his head, "No. Look our ride is here." Everyone turned to look down the street and saw a mint condition, vintage, Earth model Mercedes Benz 2005 CL500 coupe pull up to a stop beside the three furs. "Oh god, that's what I've been waiting for" Jet said, his ears perking up, practically floating with anticipation. The aluminum alloy rims glinted in the luminous glow form the streetlamps, as the powerful motor stood in it's idle hum, a far cry from the true power of the beast that lay inside of the cars chassis. "Well let's go guys." Avin said climbing into the passenger's seat of the car waiting for his friends to follow. Gryphon and Jet just stood there gazing at the machine, a tribute to true craftsmanship.

Jet was the first to react, walking forward and opening the door, "Oh! The interior, I could get used to this." Jet said sliding comfortably into the back seat and clipping in his seatbelt he leaned back into the soft seats. Gryphon finally regained his senses and rushed around to the other side of the car, his tail brushing briefly on the sleek silver paint, before he too slid into the side door. The driver nodded and began to nudge the car forward, the motor all but quiet inside of the car. They took a couple of turns before they came to a highway and that was when the Mercedes really had a chance to run free. The driver shifted the car into gear, seamlessly and effortlessly, faster and faster as it raced down the highway pushing 140mph. The engine roared, and even though the interior was quiet no amount of sound dampening was going to silence the behemoth of an engine. "You think we should be going this fast?" Gryphon asked a little concerned for his own safety. "There is no need to be alarmed sir, all of the highways on Corithane are magnetically controlled by magnets in the cars wheels and in the ground. You see I couldn't cause an accident if I wanted too." Gryphon nodded and decided to just enjoy the ride.

Fifteen minutes later they arrived at their destination. "Whoa." Was all Gryphon and Jet could say. The car pulled into the driveway of a huge estate manor. It was at least four stories high with huge windows and decorative statues all over the place. The lawn was trimmed to perfection with various shrubbery and bushes carved into various animals and such. The car drove up the slight hill that the manor was built on and pulled around in front of the door. "Alright, everyone out." Avin said climbing out of the Mercedes, before coming around to help Jet and Gryphon out. "Thanks Richard." Avin said waving as the elderly Great Dane drove the car away and towards the large garage, which surely held many cars just as expensive and luxurious.

The three of them continued up to the front door of the house which was largely made of glass and finely cut teak wood that had delicate carving and engraving all over it. Avin pressed the intercom button and waited for a few seconds. "Yeah, who is it." There was a female voice on the other end and this intrigued Gryphon. "It's me, Avin." He replied pressing down the button again. "K, just hold on." The voice said. Everyone could hear a bit of rustling and movement about the house before one of the large front doors opened and there stood a female wolf. She was pretty tall considering that she was a female, standing about 5 feet 8 inches. " Mission!" Avin said stepping in to hug the female, who Avin obviously knew. "It's so good to see you, are you all right?" Mission asked after she had broken the embrace, holding Avin at arms length. "I'm fine, I'd like you to meet my friends though. This is Gryphon and Jet." He said gesturing to each of them respectfully. "And she, is my sister Mission." Avin replied pointing to the other wolf. For the second time that night Jet and Gryphon were both shocked. "She's your sister?" Gryphon asked. "Yup, good old sis here lent us a place to stay." Avin said with a wink to his sister. "Well come on in guys, I bet you're all tired. The rooms are ready so I'll show you to them." Mission opened the other door and led them into the house.

Mission's house was enormous. There were gold fixtures for the lighting on the walls and from the ceiling in the grand entrance way hung a huge chandelier, probably made of diamond. Right in front of them was a huge staircase, of the spiral variety. It circled the whole upper atrium of the entranceway and was carpeted with velvet. "Your house is amazing." Jet said to Mission as they started up the stairs. "Thanks, I inherited it from our grandparents. Well actually me and Avin inherited it, but Avin wanted to go to school on Earth instead." Gryphon and Jet looked at Avin who just shrugged. "Hey what can I say, I wanted an education." Gryphon shook his head as they continued up the stairs. They finally made it upstairs and were standing in the doorway to the room. "Well here it is, Gryphon if you don't mind you and Jet will share a room. My grandparents were really old fashioned and when they built this house they didn't believe in a bunch of small rooms this is only a three-bedroom house although we are currently having some parts of it converted into more bedrooms." Gryphon cast an uneasy glance in Jet's direction before nodding. "Yeah that'll be fine." Gryphon said selecting one of the two beds in the room and lying down on it. "Alright, I guess I'll see you two in the morning then." Avin said as he left the room with his sister, closing the door behind him.

Gryphon lay on the bed for some time gazing around at how huge it was. It was practically a house within a house. It had a door into a large bathroom, a seating area, and even a small library. "Well I don't know about you but I'm going to get to bed." Gryphon said standing up and glancing quickly in Jet's direction. Jet taking the hint turned around as Gryphon took off his shirt and pants and crawled into the bed wearing his boxers. "Night." Jet said as he followed suit and turned off the lights. "Night." Gryphon replied listening to Jet sigh heavily and move around a little as he attempted to get comfortable. Finally settling into a comfortable position Jet lay down and went to sleep.

He continued down the stairs as quietly as he could and looked around near the front door for a set of keys. He say a rack hanging on the wall and looked for something that wouldn't cost too much if something happened to it. "Mission really does like Earth cars." He though to himself as he walked through the cool night towards the long attached garage, which held his car of choice. Using the other key on the chain he opened the door and found his car. Using the remote he opened the garage door that corresponded with the door that was in front of the car. Turning on the car alarm he proceeded to the door, which was guarded by a tall muscular bull. "That'll be 5 credits please." The guard said looking down at the wolf. "Here, keep the change."
