"So what kind of music do they play?" Carrel asked.

"Mainly swing and jazz. We have a second practice tomorrow night with the singer and Charley." Nodrog said.

"Who's the singer?" Alice asked.

"I haven't met her yet." Nodrog said.

"If you haven't met them, how do you know it's a 'her'?" Jenny made air quotation marks.

"Because they said he would probably like 'her'." Sherman said teasing Jenny for her air quotation marks.

"Well now I am even more interested in going." Jim said and they laughed as Carrel poked him in the ribs.

"You are as bad as Jenny some days." Carrel said.

"Was it really a birthday cake, or have you always liked girls?" Sherman asked.

"I said it was the attempted cake. And yes, I have always liked girls over boys. Cause I like boobies... a lot." Jenny said and giggled as Sherman almost blew iced tea out his nose.

"It wasn't like guys didn't ask her out, she was asked out more then I was in college." Alice said.

"Just never was interested in them." Jenny said and quickly stabbed the last bit of pie out from under Alice's fork.

"Hey." Alice said.

"Too slow." Jenny said before eating the last bite.

"I'll show you too slow..." Alice threatened and pounced on Jenny.

"Are they always this... energetic?" Samantha asked as she walked up to Sherman.

"Most days they are." Carrel said and swatted both of them on their ass. "Sit down and behave."

"What brings you down here tonight?" Jim asked.

"I was looking for Jenny, actually." Samantha said.

"Now what did you do?" Alice asked with her hand on her hips. Nodrog, Sherman and Jim laughed.

"I'm totally innocent, I swear." Jenny said.

"Want to join us?" Sherman asked and made room for her next to him on the bench.

"Sure, I'm not doing anything." Samantha said with a smile and sat down next to Sherman. "Jenny didn't do anything wrong. I wanted to thank her for making me go to the gala the other night."

"See I don't always cause trouble." Jenny said.

"It does seem a little strange that she made me go too." Sherman said.

"I was wondering why you two were there. Normally security does not have to attend those events..." Alice said. She turned to look at Jenny "Why would you make them go?"

"I am a bit curious myself." Sherman said.

"So you and her could hook up." Jenny said.

"You really are a sneaky little kitten." Sherman said.

"Yeah, but it worked. That's why I wanted to thank her for convincing me to go." Samantha said.

"Is that what you were happy about when I asked you?" Alice asked.

"Yup, my sneakiness got Sherman and Samantha a date together." Jenny said.

"I don't know how you got Sherman to go, but I wouldn't call your begging mixed with crying sneaky." Samantha said with a smile.

"I was told I didn't have a choice and was going whether I liked it or not." Sherman said.

"I am not above begging, tears or threats for the betterment of friends." Jenny said with a mocked modesty.

"So you admit it was a set up." Nodrog said.

Jenny placed a hand over her heart. "I am only guilty of trying to help two people find love..."

"Its okay, we forgive you for making us dress up and attend a silly party." Samantha said.

"Really, I was thinking I should thank her for that." Sherman said with a little growl.

"I can't recall ever seeing you wearing anything that feminine before..." Alice said and scratched behind one of her ears. "You have a nice figure, you shouldn't hide it."

"It's true, you have more curves then we do." Jenny and Alice both giggled as Samantha blushed.

"Why the two of them can be a little crass, you did look lovely at the gala." Nodrog said.

"See, I wasn't the only one that thought so." Sherman said and put his arm around her.

"I know, its just the first time..." Samantha said.

"A pair of girls flirted with you?" Jenny asked.

"Yeah." Samantha said a bit embarrassed.

"I thought I told you two, to behave." Carrel said in a mock scolding tone.

"Considering Jenny's normal behavior, this is her being good." Jim said and took a drink.

"I have heard stories from people on Frank's crew. I just figured they were picking on her." Samantha said.

"They might embellish them, a bit, but I can be a holy terror." Jenny said with pride. "Granted not all the time."

"Just most." Alice teased.

"I thought she was almost angelic at the gala, compared to the party at Joe's." Nodrog said.

"Hey now, I do know when misbehaving is not allowed... Granted I really, really wanted to throw the shrimp cocktail sauce at my dad." Jenny said and crossed her arms.

"Funny I was thinking the whole bowel of punch." Jim said.

"I guess I am the guiltiest, I was just going to punch him." Alice said and they all laughed.

"Have any of you heard about a dig in what was San Fran?" Samantha asked.

"I got a short e-mail on it Thursday or Friday. Probably will be another combined operation since we have the heavy equipment and half the divers. It's still in the initial planning stages, with all of it under water and the very active fault line. I guess 5.0 earthquakes are still common." Jim said.

"We got the same one, from my understanding it won't happen till spring." Alice said.

"I never got an e-mail about it." Jenny said and looked at Alice.

Alice smiled and put a finger on Jenny's nose. "Yes you did, I read all of your company e-mail and delete everything you wouldn't read anyways."

"So you are my sexatary too? I am special." Jenny said.

"I am bad about checking it, but if she didn't delete your inbox, it would be so full you wouldn't get anything." Jim said.

"Well, in my defense most of them are boring and don't have anything to do with me." Jenny said.

"I have to agree with you, it takes me forever to get through all of it some days." Samantha said.

"I guess being top secret has its perks." Sherman said.

"And being a relic." Nodrog said and they clinked their beer bottles.

"You don't even have an e-mail." Alice said.

"Why would he even need one? The head honcho has a direct line to him." Jim said and was glad not to be in either the wolf or dragon's positions.

"Plus it's not like he needs to sign up for retirement or health benefits." Carrel said with a chuckle.

"It would be funny though when they asked him his age." Samantha said.

"I have enough trouble explaining that." Nodrog said.

"I admire you and Alice for your ability to put up with all of those snotty rich people. I think those silly parties are harder then pulling stuff out of the ground." Jim said.

"I think you do rather well. Besides, for being an old man you still clean up pretty good." Carrel said.

"I almost didn't recognize you without the ball cap." Sherman said.

"It's my lucky hat." Jim said and adjusted his hat.

"So we have the concert at the club, and what else this week?" Jenny asked.

"I need to take Nodrog down to the campus and get him an ID so he can help mom with classes and show him around. Thursday we are supposed to go down to Amber's shop for a couple of fittings for the photo shoot the following week." Alice said.

"I remember when we were always busy like that." Jim said and rocked back in his chair.

"We are still busy, Saturday we have the poker tournament. You need to help Alice and Jenny with their prank and you have a pool tournament next week. I have two knitting guild meetings and a ladies luncheon." Carrel said.

"That does sound busy, I don't think my folks do anything but work and worry their 'butch daughter' will never get married." Samantha said.

"We have plans too, mom flies in tomorrow, and the concert at the club. Plus we have to do PT with the security here Tuesday." Sherman said.

"I forgot about that, why do we have to do them?" Nodrog asked.

"Because its required of all security, even special security." Sherman said.

"Speaking of that, which of you would win in a fight?" Samantha asked.

"NO! Bad idea! Very very bad idea!" Alice and Jenny yelled frantically.

"I still have nightmares about flying coke machines." Alice said.

Samantha looked at Alice then at Sherman.

"Someone else had that idea and it sort of got out of hand..." Nodrog said sheepishly.

"And understatement of the year goes too... The Iron Dragon." Jenny said sarcastically.

"Still don't follow." Samantha said a little confused.

"Their little fight caused a million dollars in structural damage to the building. I think Beth is still in counseling over nearly getting creamed with a vending machine." Alice said.

"Oh that was you two, that caused all of that..." Samantha said. Nodrog and Sherman nodded silently. "Wait why were Jenny and Alice there?"

"To observe and take notes and I think two minutes in we were fleeing in terror." Jenny said.

"Yeah, pretty much the worst day ever." Alice said.

"Sounds scary." Carrel said.

"Actually what's scary is, he was holding back and I wasn't as strong as I am now." Sherman said.

"Indeed, maybe a rematch is in order... However we will need a more suitable venue." Nodrog said with a wicked smile.

"As long as we can be a mile or two away." Jenny said.

"I still think it's a bad idea no matter where they play." Alice said.

"Considering other events and concerns, we should see what you are now capable of. I don't want any surprises if we have to go play soldier by ourselves again." Nodrog said seriously.

"There is the combat bunker were you fought the other candidates..." Sherman said.

"I would feel safe if you both were in another state." Jenny said thinking that was part of what made her bound three some with them all the more... powerful. They could smash concrete with their bare hands, bend rebar and hurl thousand pound plus vending machines. She couldn't have escaped even if she wasn't tied up, and all of that incredible power was in the same hands that had caressed her so gently. It was the mind trip that made it so exciting and terrifying at the same time, maybe she was safer tied up...

"It is hard to believe the two of them are that strong and yet so calm and quiet. I can't remember you ever losing your temper Sherman. And I have never seen Nodrog angry." Samantha said. Sherman had told her what happened between him and his father. He thought it better to be honest up front, and she respected him for telling her his fears.

"That is why we have to be calm and not short tempered. And why I have said the world is soft... because it is so easy to break it." Nodrog said.

"After seeing you without a scratch after those tanks went off, I can see why you are troubled at times. Bullets are one thing, several hundred cubic feet of highly volatile gas is another..." Jim said and shook his head.

"And the two of you let him live with you?" Samantha asked.

"Yes." Jenny and Alice said together and with no hesitation.

"He saved us from the guys that ambushed the dig we found him at. And he protected Alice from her nut job ex boyfriend when I couldn't. If it wasn't for him, Sherman and Cindy would have been toast and no one would have came to help you and Frank's team." Jenny said.

Chapter

"Kinda' like a big guard dog that cleans up after himself." Alice said with a giggle.

"Thanks." Nodrog said and flicked a straw wrapper at her.

"Actually you are one of the quietest, and well behaved roommates I have ever had." Alice said.

"Then what am I?" Jenny asked.

"You moved out of roommate stage when you pinned me to the couch and asked me out." Alice said with a wink.

"Things become different after you start going out. Then you get married and it all goes downhill." Carrel said with a smile.

"Hey now, I resemble that remark... I have yet to forget a birthday or anniversary. Still the man you married, just a little bigger around the middle and older." Jim said and laughed. It was getting late so they all got ready to leave.

Sherman put an arm around Jenny and picked her up. "Also, apology accepted." Jenny turned bright red as he whispered something in her ear before setting her back down. Sherman and Samantha headed off in one direction as the rest headed up to their apartments.

"Think anyone is on to us?" Jenny asked as Nodrog pulled the door closed and locked it.

"On to what?" Alice asked as she kicked her shoes off and plopped down on the couch.

"The three of us and our little ménage a..." Jenny couldn't think of the other word.

"You mean our little love triangle? ...I don't know, aside from Sherman, and probably my mom." Alice said and stretched her arms above her head.

"They might suspect something, but it is hard to say." Nodrog said, he didn't give it much thought.

"I am probably over reacting like usual. Most people would think two girls living with one guy would be odd if something wasn't happening." Jenny said and dug around in the fridge for something to drink.

"Either that or they assume after the wedding I will get my own place." Nodrog said.

"Guess we will worry about that when the time comes... Are we out of kool-aid?" Jenny asked.

"No, we just never made anymore." Alice said.

"Water it is then... I keep waiting for your mother to ask him which one of us is going to be giving birth to little dragon cat or mouse grand kids." Jenny closed the fridge with a bump from her hip.

"She all ready has, a couple of times." Nodrog said as he twirled a aluminum rod between his fingers like a drum stick.

"So she knows we are all sleeping together or...?" Alice asked.

"She knows everything, including that there will be no grand kids." Nodrog said and took a bite out of the rod.

"I had thought that might be what you and her were talking about when you talk in Egyptian. I wonder when we will have that talk..." Alice said and slouched further in the couch.

"I think you misunderstood me. She knows the three of us feel the same way about the other two. As long as you are happy, that is all the matters, the details are just that, details." Nodrog said.

"We would have to tell her at some point, she is rather observant and razor sharp. I'm surprised I haven't done something stupid that let the whole world know all ready as it is." Jenny said.

"That is true, not much gets past her. You are never stupid." Alice said. The few times she tried to sneak out or get away with something she was always caught.

"You should give her a little more credit, she figured you would tell her when you were ready. You and her are a lot alike, I can see where you get your free spirit and open mind from." Nodrog said.

"God you think my dad freaks out about me being a lesbian. Could you imagine how he would react if he found out about the three of us?" Jenny said. She could almost hear him yelling and screaming about it.

"Lets not find out. I prefer our mostly quiet life together." Nodrog said.

"You think this is quiet? I'm in love and living with a demi god metal dragon and a lead footed car crazy vixen... We have been shot at, blown up and even traveled to a far off planet... I wouldn't call it quiet." Jenny said.

"When you put it that way, it makes you seem like the mild-mannered normal one." Alice teased.

"Now that is something of a stretch, me being the normal one." Jenny said and laughed.

"Or mild-mannered... So what did Sherman tell you that got you so embarrassed?" Nodrog asked.

"It must be good since she is turning red again." Alice said and put her arms around Jenny. "Now you have to tell us."

"I can't say." Jenny said and she could feel the heat coming off of her cheeks as she turned red.

"Oh come on." Alice cooed.

Jenny just shook her head no repeatedly. "I can't tell you."

Nodrog let it go, but Alice tried the rest of the evening at least till they went to bed. Jenny was glad she had forgotten about it come morning. Nodrog and Sherman managed to get out of PT by claiming they had special training later in the week. Which only go them out of participating, they would have to still go and observe since two of their choices for pilots had to still do the PT.

So with that little chore taken care of, Nodrog went down to help Jim and Kenny with something. Sherman hopped a shuttle off base to meet his brother at the club before they drove out to the public airport to pick up their mom.

"Would you look at that Winston, he is even ten minutes early." Brian said as he cleaned up part of the bar from a lunch party as Sherman walked into the club and headed over to the bar.

"Well I'll be damned, guess I owe you lunch." Winston said.

"I would be hurt, if I didn't deserve it. I have a lot to make up for the last few years." Sherman said.

"Better late than never. So are you still coming Wednesday night?" Brian asked.

"Yes I am, even bringing some friends along." Sherman said.

"How many? That way we can make sure Cid knows." Brian asked.

"Eight counting me, they are also friends of Nodrog." Sherman said.

"Guess we will need that ten top since mom and my girl will be with them." Winston said.

Brian pulled out a note pad from an inner vest pocket. "If I don't write it down I will forget to tell Cid when he comes in later."

"Let them know it isn't a formal event, and we are expecting a big crowd, so it will be rather warm in here." Winston said.

"That is good to know. What time do we need to get mom?" Sherman asked as he glanced at his watch.

"We should probably get going." Winston said as he glanced up at the clock on the wall.

"Then get going." Brian said as he leaned against the counter behind the bar.

"When did you get a Jeep?" Sherman asked as they walked up to the little blue Jeep.

"Had it for a while now. You've been too busy to keep up with the rest of us." Winston said.

"Ouch, are you going to let me forget I have been a lousy brother and son?" Sherman asked as they got in.

"Sorry, it's just..." Winston said and started the Jeep.

"I know, you don't have to explain it. I am trying to change, thankfully I have some friends who understand." Sherman said.

"Well you are here now, it's a start. I need to quit being so hard on you, its just we were real close, then you just left." Winston said.

"We had a lot of fun. The rest of my stuff should be here this week from the other base." Sherman said and they turned onto the highway.

"You are permanently moving here?" Winston asked.

"Yeah, myself and Nodrog are in a special unit... but our main duty will be security for the archaeology teams." Sherman said.

"So you still will be gone, just not so last minute." Winston said.

"No, there will still be some drop everything and leave stuff, but it will not be as common. Last time we were gone three days to rescue some medical staff held hostage." Sherman said.

"Wait, you two are the Nightmare Calvary?" Winston said. He glanced at his brother and almost shivered.

"Yeah, didn't know you saw the broadcast. Promise you won't tell mom, she worries enough. From here on I am just boring ol' field security." Sherman said.

"I would have missed it except Freddy likes watching the news when its slow." Winston said.

"Do you remember Samantha?" Sherman asked, steering the subject to lighter topics.

"The tall gal you stood up?" Winston asked and chuckled as Sherman winced.

"That is the one. Saturday we went out for the dinner I owed her." Sherman said.

"I thought you were seeing someone." Winston said and turned off the highway to pull into the airport parking garage.

"Cindy, it didn't work out... Now I do feel like shit, I can't remember the little fox's name you were seeing." Sherman said.

"Jennifer. I will give you credit for remembering I am dating a fox." Winston said with a smile.

"So are you going to pop the question?" Sherman said as they stopped at the little booth to get a parking pass.

"Been thinking about it, we have been seeing each other for two years now." Winston said as he pulled into a parking spot.

"I'm surprised she didn't come with us." Sherman said and they both got out.

"She wanted to, but one of the other nurses called in sick, so she is pulling a double shift." Winston said and clicked the lock button on the key.

"I know I couldn't do that line of work." Sherman said as they walked into the airport.

"She really loves it. Lets see, flight three fifty one..." Winston said as they stopped to check the arrival board.

"Gate fourteen." Sherman said.

"Good, I figured we would have to walk to the furthest gate here." Winston said

"It said it is on time so we have a little time... to get her some flowers." Sherman said and paused at one of the gift shops.

"Going to start sucking up right away?" Winston asked as Sherman picked out a little bouquet of some yellow flowers. "Hey, you remembered yellow is her favorite color."

"Yes I am, I was planning on paying for dinner too." Sherman said and paid for the flowers.

"In that case I am ordering the most expensive thing on the menu." Winston teased.

"We all can. While I have been real busy, I don't have any expenses. Plus my new position pays a lot better so..." Sherman said.

"I can call you Mr. Moneybags?" Winston asked.

"Maybe not that far, but I can afford to treat my family to a good dinner." Sherman said as they walked up to the gate.

Winston pulled out his phone as it played a short little tune. He flipped it open and smiled. "Jennifer, just got off so she will meet us at our place."

"Does mom know you are living together?" Sherman asked as the plane pulled up to the gate.

"Yeah, we moved in together just before mom's visit out last year." Winston said.

They stood back a little from the gate and waited for them to hook the gate to the plan and the stuffy first class people to get off the damn plane. Finally they spotted her talking away with one of the other passengers from the plane. Winston called out to her and after a second she finally saw the two of them.

Amber Moore, was a little under six feet tall and almost a perfect snow white in color. She had gained a little weight since Sherman had seen her last, but she was still a lovely saint to him. How she ever fell in love with their father he would never know or understand. After he supposedly died, she worked two jobs to keep a roof over their head. The only reason Winston got music lessons was she worked for a woman whose husband played and taught him for free. Sherman only got to play sports because the coach's brother was his mom's other boss.

She said goodbye to whoever she was talking to and quickly made her way over to them. "What a surprise, both of my boys are here to pick me up. Why didn't you tell me your brother was coming with you?"

"We wanted it to be a surprise." Winston said and gave her a hug. "Hi ma."

"What have they been feeding you Sherman?" Amber asked.

"Whatever I want to eat. I'm so glad to see you again." Sherman said and hugged the greatest woman in the world.

"I suppose I have to cook dinner." Amber said as they walked to baggage claim.

"Not this time. I am treating all of us to dinner." Sherman said and picked up the bag she pointed out.

"You two are full of surprises. Winston did Jennifer have to work this evening?" Amber asked.

"She just got off. We will pick her up from our apartment and then go eat." Winston said as they headed back out to the jeep.

"Wonderful, do I get to meet any of your friends Sherman?" Amber asked.

"Wednesday evening for sure. One of them is playing with Winston." Sherman said and climbed into the back seat.

"Well lets go get Jennifer and I will tell you all about how everyone back home is doing." Amber said as Winston started the jeep and they headed over to his apartment.

Sherman carried her bag up to the apartment Winston and Jennifer shared. It was bigger and nicer than the one he had on company grounds. They over looked the college campus and being on the sixteenth floor had a rather unobstructed view of the mountains to the west.

"So nice to see you again Ms. Moore." Jennifer said and got out of the chair she was sitting in to give their mom a hug. She was a cute, pudgy little gray fox anthro. Roughly Alice's height Sherman figured, but probably twenty to twenty five pounds heavier than the mouse. Last time he saw her she was a little heavier and still taking med classes and interning at one of the hospitals.

"Always good to see you as well Jennifer." Amber said.

"Wow, it has been a while Sherman. I don't remember you being so... ripped." Jennifer said as Sherman closed the door behind him.

"How was your day babe?" Winston asked and gave her a quick hug and a kiss.

"It was long and busy. I'm glad I got off in time to be here when the three of you showed up. I hate to be rude, but lunch was a long time ago." Jennifer said.

"Let me use the bathroom and we can go. I am rather hungry myself." Amber said.

"So how have you been Sherman?" Jennifer asked as Winston took the bag back to the room Amber would be staying in.

"Up until several weeks ago I have been incredibly busy. A few new things have come up and thanks to some new friends I have gotten a few of my priorities in the right order now. How have you been?" Sherman asked.

"Graduated in the top fifteen and I have been full time for a little over a year now. Even have managed to lose some weight since you were last in town. Looks like you have really put on the muscle." Jennifer said.

"When all you do is train and work out... and then go through tests. But that changed since I got a transfer to the science team." Sherman said.

"Funny, I don't remember you being interested in science." Amber said as her and Winston came out from the back of the apartment.

"Not quite what you are thinking. I am now assigned with the permanent security that goes out in the field with one of the top archeological teams." Sherman said.

"That sounds exciting." Amber said.

Sherman held the door for them. "Yeah last time out I protected a cat from a bug that was hiding in a jar." They laughed as Winston locked the door and they headed out for dinner.
