In chapter 3, R.C. comes to terms with the other night and finally gets a chance to clear something up
What once Was... Chapter 3
"Ok...Hello?" R.C. speaks into the phone. "Hello?" he says again, this time hearing the disconnect tones. "Mother Fuck...this has to be a joke or something!" He drops the phone on the passenger seat and slumps over the wheel about to cry. The poor fox starts to shed a couple tears as he looks up at the sunset over Rt 51 just over the hill. He then looks down at his paws which are gripping the wheel at the 11&1 position. A couple tears drip on his blue fingers and pink paw pads to which he then uses to wipe his eyes of tears. Several thoughts cross his mind, most of which are of confusion over this mystery fur and if they're real or making it up. The usual teenage depression from his lack of success in dating has taking a major toll on R.C.'s emotional integrity leaving the fox vulnerable to attack.
His phone starts to ring causing the fox to jump and beep his horn. Blushing, the fox quickly answers his phone while looking around making sure no one saw or heard the embarrassment of him honking the car horn. "Good evening, this is R.C." He answers not knowing who is calling.
"Hey son! Are you working or something still?" his mother replies.
"No, I'm meeting a few friends for dinner, didn't want to disturb dad in his sleep." R.C. calmly replies.
"Oh ok, just wanted to make sure you're ok. You don't have school tomorrow so you and I are off."
"Yep, I have to work; it's labor day and really busy with everyone wanting to get their last minute riding done. Ok I'll see you tonight, bye ma." The fox hangs up.
Looking at his phone, he stares at the last text from the mysterious fur and presses the reply soft key. He then types a reply message, "Im sorry bout earlier" and presses send. A minute later, he receives a reply. It reads, "its ok I didn't know if youd be interested. It was only a one time but I did wish we could talk". R.C. reads this and starts to wonder. He takes a deep breath and hits reply. "can you come to dennys by c3 mall?" and hits send. Almost immediately he gets a reply, "of course I know where it is! Give me 40 minutes ok?" He sighs and gets out of the car feeling a bit better. "Well, I guess I can at least make a new friend I guess?" he talks to himself quietly while walking into Denny's to meet his friends.
Walking in, he sees Jason and John, both wolves from his school. "Hey guys" R.C. waves to the duo and sits across from them at the booth. "I have another one joining us later on. I just met this one recently so is the cool?"
"Yeah why not? So how's things R.C.?" asks John
"Eh, i broke up with what's-her-name Friday." R.C. lets out, "I kinda knew it was coming."
"Typical girls, then again you never last long with them so far. Guess that's why I'm still single and stuff." John replies.
"R.C. you need to stop chasing tail and calm down a bit, you got a while to go you know?" Jason pipes in.
"Yeah...perhaps you're right Jay, I guess I worry too much about having a girlfriend all the time." R.C. sighs. "I don't know why they like me, but then want to leave me. It's like there's something wrong with me."
"Yeah, you're probably gay, Hahahaha" Jason and John both giggle.
"Funny...remind me to laugh sometime." R.C. sternly replies. Just the mere mention makes the fox think twice about what he says as his friends are gay. "Tell me something else that I care for?"
The golden retriever waitress comes over to take their order and then walks away. R.C. hears his phone beep and pulls it out. The text from Joey 3 says, "hey u I hear u invited ur new friend to dinner? I hope u 2 have a good time". R.C. replies to it, "Thanks" Then puts the phone away and looks at the two across from him. "Well, looks like another school year, what classes you in Jay?"
"Just taking my cores and going to Steel Center as usual, it's my senior year so I just can't wait to graduate." Jason says.
"I probably should've thought about going to Steel Center for something." John indicated "I'm just trying to make it an easy year will the music tech 3 and other classes."
"Yeah, I managed to get body building again surprisingly; they're holding raffles for the class." R.C. added. "I still have another year to go before I graduate. So I took some pre-AP classes and such. Maybe I'll get scholarships?"
Not too long after that, their food arrives. R.C. ordered the grand slam breakfast. Jason ordered a burger with fries. John got a shake. The three chow down quickly and then pay their respective bills.
"R.C. see you Tuesday in school?" Jason asks of the fox.
"Yes, sir. I'll see you then." R.C. replies looking at the time and starting to get nervous.
"Everything ok? Jason asks. "You look a bit scared or something, getting sick?"
"Nah, I'm just going to hang out here a little while, just a bit tired. I will see you guys Tuesday then."
The two furs leave, with R.C. staying at the booth. He pulls out his phone and sends a text to the mystery number. "hey I am sitting by the window 3 from the door by myself" it reads. He leave his phone out and requests a refill on his drink. The fox just sits there and stares out the window at the traffic on Rt. 51. Not too much long after that, his phone beeps with a new text. He reads it, "I am here and coming in. hope to see u". R.C. starts to shake and breathe harder knowing that the mystery fur is here and probably walking in. He turns his head to see if he recognizes anyone walking in the main door. Looking back, he sees a few booths occupied with others eating, his waitress and another couple leaving. He keeps looking despite not seeing anyone who could possibly be the mystery fur.
A tap on his shoulder causes the fox to jump. He looks and notices a male fennec fox who waves and smiles back. R.C. looks wide-eyed at the smaller fox in shock. "Hi, may I sit here?" The fennec asks. R.C. just sits there stunned as thoughts race his mind. Unsure of what to do, think, or say he just sits there stunned.
"Are you R.C. right? You ok there?" the fennec asks the confused fox. "I didn't mean to frighten you." He adds while tapping the fox on his shoulder again.
R.C. snaps out of the trance and looks up at the fennec. "Um...uh hi? Aren't you that one guy I met last night? Please sit down please."
The fennec fox sits down across from R.C. and smiles. "I'm glad you invited me down, I really do want to talk to you about last night." The fennec says. "You probably have a lot of worries, I know I been through this before."
"Well, I do have a lot of questions. The biggest one was what happened to me? I felt like I was drugged and taken advantage of. Most of the night was a blank to me." R.C. rapidly replies. "I guess the other thing was...oh how do I put this? Did uh we do anything?"
"Well, R.C., we both were on a drug called ecstasy. I'm not sure how you got it, but I know we both were and we both ended up together that night. I have pictures to show you about it."
R.C. looks around, "Um, I guess you can show me, but what is your name? I don't remember it at all."
The fennec pulls out a photo envelope. "I just got these printed today, and my name is Joey, but everyone calls me Skykid." He pulls out the pics and hands them to the fox. "Well, I hope you're not upset over what happened."
R.C. grabs the pictures and starts to browse them while talking with Skykid, "You know, Skykid, this was the first event in a while I wasn't a DJ or running the damn show. Honestly, it felt kind of nice not having that pressure."
Sensing that R.C. is avoiding the exact topic that the fennec himself is thinking of, he patiently waits for the couple of pictures he intentionally placed at the end to come up. R.C. breezes through a few pictures and then stops. He then looks at Skykid with concerned eyes. "Joey...is this a real picture?" He slides the picture to the fennec.
He picks the picture up and asks, "R.C., I probably know what you're thinking..."
"Honestly sir, I really don't know what to think." R.C. interrupts, "Yeah, I was on drugs, but now this is making me question myself big time. It's hard to explain..."
"R.C., I know what you're going through and I apologize. I don't want to force anything upon you. It is why I wanted to come see you and maybe answer some questions or help you out with yourself." Joey finishes.
"Joey, I just broke up last Thursday with a girl. I'm going through a lot of questions in my head. I've been with 4 girls already and it's just frustrating. I'm straight as far as I know, but last night has me confused, despite being under the influence of that drug. It's a truth serum! I'm confused and scared man." R.C. starts to tear up a little. "Joey...I need to figure this out."
Joey looks at the fox who is beside himself. He extends his paw to meet R.C.'s at the table and pats it softly. "It's ok, take your time man. I'm here for you." Joey continues to pat R.C.'s paw as it turns over to reveal his pink pads. Joey places his paw on it and grabs it lightly as R.C. continues to cry. R.C. looks up and pulls his paw back.
"Joey, I don't know. I need time to figure my life out." R.C. breaks the silence.
"Take your time; do you want to share what you feel?"
"Honestly, I don't know what I feel. I'm afraid. I'm a mess. I just don't know." R.C. says. He pulls his phone out to check the time, 7:35 PM. "I think I better get going. I have to work tomorrow." The fox says getting up. He looks at the fennec and smiles a little then walks to the door. "Um...come outside with me, please." He asks Joey.
The fennec follows the bigger fox outside as he walks to the car. "I parked here right next to this Rabbitt" Joey says.
"Oh that's my car, heh." R.C. points out. R.C. enters his car and asks Joey to jump in. The fennec hops in the passenger side. Inside, R.C. looks at the fennec and asks, "Joey, what happened between us last night I wish I could figure myself out. If this drug is a truth serum, then I got something that needs to be addressed with myself. I only came out here because I wanted to talk to you in private, not because I have to leave."
"R.C., I really have to admit something. I actually like you a bit more than a friend. I've watched you at other events and seen you work before. You seem really nice and caring and I wish I could..." Joey pours out.
"Wish you could what? Date me? Joey, I don't know. I don't even know if I could do that. I really don't know what I want to do right now. I think it's too soon to be thinking about a relationship with anyone. Hell, I don't think I could date a guy." R.C. pleads. "I'd like to be a friend to you and help you out with anything you need, sir. I just don't think I swing that way."
"Dude, I understand where you come from. I'm sorry if I pushed you too far. Maybe I should just go home I hurt you enough." Joey sulks in the passenger seat and looks out the window. R.C. notices this and starts to feel bad. He thinks for a minute then looks at Joey again, this time with concern. The fennec continues to look out the window sadly. R.C. starts to shake a little from nerves.
"Joey, are you ok?" The fox asks with concern.
"R.C., I will be, I just need a moment to gather my thoughts." Skykid replies with hesitation. "I'll just go home here shortly. I'll let you be, you need it."
R.C. looks down. "Joey..." he says and pauses. During this pause, R.C. slowly moves his right paw across the middle console closer to Joey's paw which is on his own seat. "...I...I..." he hesitates more, then finally moves his paw and grabs Joeys paw to hold it. "...I at least owe you something."
Joey looks over at his paw being held, then looks up at R.C.'s face which shows a weak smile. "R.C.?"
"Joey...do me a favor..." The fox takes a deep breath and he quickly moves his head close to Joey's head, "...lemme do this once." He then kisses Joey. The two foxes lock lips for a good moment as their touching paws start to squeeze. After what seemed like an eternity, they break the kiss and then return to their respective sides breathing rapidly.
Joey breaks the silence, "R.C., why did you do that?"
"Because I..." the fox hesitates and shakes while breathing more rapidly, "...I wanted to see something."
"Oh" is all Joey could muster up.
"And I didn't want you leaving without something to think about." R.C. says while blushing and catching his composure. "Besides, it's only fair?"
"Yeah, but you didn't have to and I really appreciated it. I have to go now, I have to work tomorrow" Joey says as he opens the car door. "I'll talk to you around sometime. Bye now fox!"
"Bye Skykid, and thank you." R.C. says as he starts his car. Once Joey shuts his door, the fox looks over at the fennec fox and thinks about him a little. "Could I actually have feelings for him?" he thinks to himself as Joey pulls away. R.C. turns his mini-disc on and starts to drive home. The fox actually smiles a little bit feeling quite relieved and not as nervous before. "I'll have to think about this more, just not sure of myself." He continues to think more and more about the possibilities of a relationship with a guy.
Fifteen minutes later, he pulls in the driveway at home. Walking in, he heads up stairs and changes for bed even though it's only 8:30. He then gets into bed, plugs his phone in just in time to read a text from the mystery number. He then adds the number under "SkyKid" and reads the message. It reads, "RC im glad to have met you today. I hope u had a good time". R.C. replies back, "yeah I did have a good time. Im sorry I am a little scared but this is new to me". The phone beeps with a reply, "yes its ok to be that way but I have to ask u something" it beeps again "do you want to go out with me?"
R.C. reads this and pauses. He looks at the phone and thinks back to the kiss. "It wasn't all that bad, just like a girls kiss. What is wrong with being with guy? What will the others in school think of me?" The fox sighs heavily weighing all the thoughts that flood his head. He then hits reply, and starts to type.
