The Breaking Point: Chapter 11
#11 of The breaking point
The next morning, I was up at 6:00a.m, and I walked out of the barracks to make sure everything was prepared. Josh had already gotten us an alternative vehicle. It was a 2001 Dodge Durango, and it was blue. I was happy with the choice. It wasn't a vehicle that would stand out, and it was able to go off-road. It also had heated seats!
Sean had walked over while I was checking out the vehicle. I looked up at him, smiled, and yelled, "Shotgun!" and hopped in the passenger seat. He just shook his head, and got into the drivers seat. He started the vehicle, and started out of the camp. I fell asleep quickly.
I woke up with a hand being put across my chest, and the vehicle swerving. I grabbed one of the handles in the car. Where I came from, they were called "oh shit" handles, for good reason. He slammed on the breaks, and I thankfully had my seatbelt on.
Once we had come to a complete stop, he asked if I was all right.
"Yea, I am fine. What the hell was that about?" I asked.
"A dog ran out in the road, and I think I hit it. Normal dog, not an animorph." He said, as if reading my mind.
"Jesus, I know you are a cat, but there is no need for that." I said, as I got out of the car. He just laughed, and got out with me. I wanted to make sure that if it was injured to far, I could put it down. I had my m416 with me, slung over my shoulder. I also had taken Josh's pistol, a g18 full auto pistol.
He had killed it. It was a female German shepherd, my favorite kind of dog. He looked sad, and I told him not to worry about it too much. I could understand how he hit the dog. There was a decent amount of fog out, and he also probably was still tired. I looked at my watch, and it read to be 9:36.
"Alright, I will drive from here." I said, and he nodded tossed me the keys. I caught them, and started back to the Durango.
"Did you hear that?" He asked. I looked at him and shook my head. I stood still to see if I could hear the sound. He walked over to the side of the road, and found the source of the noise: a baby German shepherd. It was about 12 weeks old, and seemed to be weaned.
"Well, I guess we will bring him along with. What should we name him?" Sean asked.
I smiled. "Rolf! A German name for a German dog!" He laughed, and I slowly approached the pup. He sniffed my hand, and whimpered. He got up, and huddled near my feet.
"Oh yea, he is so coming with!" I said, as I scooped him up. I carried him back over to the Durango, and got in. He hopped in the passenger seat, and I smiled.
"Well, where I am suppose to sit, Rolf?" Sean asked the pup.
"Come here Rolf." I said, and I was surprised to see him listen to me. He curled up on my lap, and fell asleep. I still had enough room to drive, so I was okay with it. Sean got in, and fell asleep right away. I started the truck, and put into drive and kept going.
While I was driving, I got to look at some of the most beautiful sights. The Fog seemed to curve around the mountains, like the most majestic artwork. I pet Rolf while I drove, and he kept licking my chin. I smiled, knowing that I finally had an animal that wouldn't be a smartass to me!
At 2:00p.m, I finally shook Sean awake.
"What?" He asked, stretching.
"Your turn to drive. I am tired, and Rolf and I are going to go for a 5 minute run. You coming with?" I asked. He nodded, and I pulled over. I made sure that the Durango was hidden from sight.
As soon as I opened the door, Rolf hopped off my lap and walked about 10ft, and started peeing.
"Good boy Rolf!" I said, and he looked over at me, his little tongue hanging out of his mouth. Sean meanwhile had found a tree and was doing the same thing. "Good boy Sean!" I said, and he flipped me off. I just laughed.
We all then ran off, running around a bare field, and I threw sticks for Rolf. I tried to do the same thing for Sean, but he was less than happy. He threw a rock at my head when I tried!
"Well, what sports are you good at?" I asked, curiously.
"Not really any. My father wanted me to study auto mechanics. So I did." He said.
I thought, and then smiled. I had an idea.
"How about a race?"
He smiled at me. "I don't know if you want to do that..."
"Come on tough guy. Right here, right now. Out to that tree and back." I said, pointing to a tree that lay about a football field away.
He smiled. "You're on." He crouched, preparing to run. I did the same, knowing that most likely I was going to be smoked, but I had a plan...
He counted down. "Three, two, one..." And he took off. I ran over to the Durango, and fired up the engine. I slammed it into 4-wheel drive, and ripped my way through the tall grass toward the tree. I saw him turn around, and his jaw drop. I tore by him, and the end was in sight. But he did something I didn't account for. He hopped on the back!
"Get off the bloody truck!" I yelled out the window. He just smiled, and crawled onto the roof. I could hear him slowly make his way up toward the front. Finally, I watched him slide down the front of the truck, onto the hood of the Durango. There was no way I was going to let him win this way, so I took a semi-sharp turn away from the tree. I slammed on the brakes, and he held on for dear life. I quickly hopped out of the truck, and ran the rest of the way to the tree. I knew he must have been right behind me, so I ran like the devil himself was chasing me.
Once I was about 50ft from the tree, I thought that I had this race in the bag. But I felt a weight on my back, just as I stepped into a small hole. I went ass over teakettle, and so did he. He was able to recover quicker than I was, and he made it to the tree. We were both breathing heavy, and laughing at the same time. We started back over to the truck.
"I can't believe you used the truck!" He said, once we were able to catch our breath.
"YOU climbed over the damn truck!" I said, and we both busted into laughter. Rolf also seemed please, but that might also be because I gave him some of the deer jerky I had with me.
"Alright, we need to get moving again. Our five minute break seems to have been a little longer!" He said, as he climbed into the drivers seat. I climbed into the back with Rolf, and I put the seat down so I could sleep. I was tired! It was not even five minutes before I was out, with Rolf sleeping on my chest. I heard Sean chuckling, as he navigated us toward his house.
He awoke me ten minutes before we reached his house. It was about 5:00pm. Rolf looked over at me with a lopsided grin.
"Alright, but you remember our deal? I get to keep one weapon on me." I said, and he smiled and looked at me in the rearview mirror. "You know, we aren't that dangerous."
"Bullshit. You have claws that could gut me." I said, and he laughed.
"And have any of us hurt you?" He said, sarcastically. I just held up my right arm, which still had stitches in it. That made him shut up.
As he navigated the suburban streets, I put on my shirt and a pair of BDU pants. I also strapped the g18 to my thigh, and I tried to brush the hair off of my pants, with little success. We pulled into the driveway, and I was surprised by what I saw. It wasn't a house, it was a fucking mansion!
"Uh, Sean, either you have the wrong address, or you have held back details." I said, and he smiled sheepishly.
"I wasn't sure if you would come if you knew." He said. "I am sorry if this upsets you."
"No, just, a little warning next time please." I said. He nodded in agreement.
He started to get out of the truck, when I heard him mutter, "Ah shit."
"What's the matter?" I asked, hoping not to be taken prisoner this time.
"You know my brother, the one who I told you who hates the human race more than anything else, and was in the army?"
"Yea. Your point?" I asked, nervously. I didn't need a fight tonight.
"Yea, that's him standing in the doorway. Well, to late to back down. Come on, you are my guest, and he will respect that, even if he doesn't like it."
"Uh, what about Rolf?" I asked. I had grown fond of this dog already, and I didn't want to leave him behind.
"Oh, my family would have no problem with him." He said. Great, they were willing to let a dog in before a human.
As we walked toward the door, his brother did not budge. I was really hoping that he would just give up on his hate so that we could get thought the night peacefully. Oh well.
He walked out of the house, to meet Sean on the porch. Both hugged each other. He stood about 6', and was decently built. He had an m9 strapped to his hip.
"How have you been Derrick?" Sean asked. So Derrick was his name.
"Great! I got a week off from the Army for now. We just finished destroying the humans in a small town called Limericksville in Oregon. They fight pathetically." He said, as he stared me in the eye.
I took a deep breath, and said, "Yes, that is true for some. For others, not so much. My name is Christopher Geier." I stuck out my hand for him to shake it. He ignored it, and instead turned to Sean.
"Why did you have to ruin this by bringing him?"
"Because mom and dad asked me to bring him. He saved Garret and me from starving. He housed us, and fed us. Now, we stand behind him, willing to fight for him." He said, proudly. I beamed, and I saw Derrick fume. He shook his head, and walked back inside. I heard Sean chuckle, and I just shook my head. Rolf started to attack my shoelaces, and I growled at him playfully. He looked up at me, with the laces in his mouth, and I almost died laughing. I shook him off, and he looked hurt. I leaned down and started petting him.
I heard the door open, and I looked up to see a child come out. It was a male.
"Timothy!" Sean yelled, and the child ran over to him. Sean picked him up and swung him around. Timothy laughed, and I smiled as well. I heard the door again, but I thought that it was just closing.
"So you must be Captain Geier." I heard a female voice say behind me. I turned to see a female Lynx, who appeared to be Sean's mother. I bowed to her, and I heard her chuckle.
"That is not necessary Captain, but I thank you for the honor. I am Sean's mother, Theresa. It is a pleasure to meet you, and I must thank you for the well being of our son." She said, as she extended her hand. I shook it gently, to be respectful.
"Ma'am, if you would not mind to much, I prefer to go by Chris. It is also an honor to meet the mother of one of the best and brightest young men I know. Do believe me when I say the honor is all mine." She smiled, and walked over to Sean. He had out down Timothy, and they hugged. I saw his mother tear up, and I looked away out of politeness.
Timothy, now out of Sean's grasp, walked over to me.
"What is your name, sir?" He asked, nervously.
"My name is Chris. What is yours sir?" I asked. He giggled at being called sir.
"My name is Timothy, but I like Tim better." He said.
"Well, it is very nice to meet you Mr. Tim." I said, and extended my hand. He giggled again, and shook my hand. At this point, Rolf had given up with my shoelaces, and lay at my feet. Tim looked at him and smiled.
"Tim, would you like to say hello to Rolf?" I asked, and Rolf's ears perked up at hearing his name.
"Yea!" He said, as he walked over and started petting Rolf. Rolf rolled over on his back so that Tim could pet his belly.
"Wow, great guard dog you are." I muttered, and Tim giggled. I also heard the door again, and I turned around to see who come out. It was an elder male, who seemed to be his father.
He walked over to Sean first, who was still talking with his mother. Both of them stopped talking, and then Sean and the elder lynx embraced. I looked away again, and I looked at Tim, who was playing with Rolf, who was literally on top of my feet.
"Chris!" I heard Sean call, and I looked over at him. He waved me over to him. I started to walk, but that little shit tied my shoelaces together. As I tried to take a step, I fell, and landed on the grass. Tim quickly jumped on my back, and Rolf started to lick my face. Sean ran over, laughing. I could also see that both his mother and the man were laughing. Great.
"Come on, get up." Sean said, as he pushed Timothy off my back, and undid the knot in my shoelaces. I thanked him, and he helped me up. As I got up, I checked to see that my pistol was still in the holster. I did not need Tim getting his hands on that!
"Chris, this is my father." Sean said, as the man stuck out his hand.
I shook it, and said, " It is very nice to meet you. As I have told his mother, he is a great addition to our team. He is the best mechanic that I could ever have hoped to lay my hands on."
He smiled, and said, "It is I who should be thanking you. If you had not found him, I am afraid of who might have. He did not however how you exactly met, and I would love to hear the story over dinner." He said, and I saw Sean semi-blush. I just smiled, and said that I would.
"Well then, it is settled. I believe dinner is in about half an hour. Sean, why don't you go show Chris the house?" His mother said. Sean nodded, and was happy to get off the subject of me finding him.
"Come on, then. And by the way, it seems Timothy has taken Rolf." Sean said, and I looked around and saw them rolling around with each other. I just smiled, and headed off with Sean.
"And this is my room." He said, as we walked into a room that was about half the size of the barracks.
"Jesus! This could fit almost 10 people!" I said, and he laughed. He walked into the closet, and came back out about 20 seconds later. He tossed something at me, and I caught it. It was a bathing suit.
"What's this for?" I asked, looking at them.
"For swimming! Come on, put them on and let's go!"
They were red and black, and were about my size. I just saw one problem. They had a hole for where a tail was suppose to go, and I didn't have a tail!
"Uh Sean, we have a problem. I don't have a tail."
He gave me a confused look, and said, "So what? I can beat you at swimming with or without my tail!" He smiled at me with a smug look.
"No, that isn't the problem, because trust me, you don't know what you are getting into. But there is a huge hole here, and I don't have a tail. I don't need to flash everyone!"
He stood there for a second, and then busted up laughing. "I didn't really think of that." He said, and continued laughing.
"Do you have duct tape?" I asked, and he nodded, still chuckling. He walked over to one of his many drawers, and tossed me a roll. I patched the hole, and then walked into the bathroom to change. I walked back out, and he had finished changing. He tossed me a towel, and we headed for the pool.
"Last one to the bottom has to do a dare!" Sean shouted, and jumped into the pool. I wasn't far behind him. I kept my shirt on, to hide the scars from when the chopper crashed into the ground. I didn't want to upset anybody, and also to hide Star's bite mark.
We both reached the bottom at almost the same time, but he beat me by about a second. We both surfaced, and he immediately dunked me again. I surfaced, and growled at him, and he smiled and swam off to the shallow end. I swam after him, slowly catching him. I smiled, and was able to grab his tail before he got out of the pool. I did not pull on his tail, because I knew that would hurt him. Instead, I wrapped my arms around his waist, and carried him back over to the deep end. I threw him in, but he somehow managed to wrap an arm around my neck, dragging me back into the water. I let out a yelp of surprise, and fell back into the cool water.
We both surfaced, and I looked around to make sure that nobody was around to hear me for a second.
"Sean, do you want to tell the actual story of how I found you, or a different one? I didn't want you to sound weak in front of your father or brother." I said.
"No, I don't care. Tell them the correct story. But, thank you for asking. Although, if you thought that I would let you off of the hook for being nice, you are so wrong!" He chuckled, and I nodded in agreement.
"Dinner!" I heard his mother call, and I smiled.
"Saved by the bell!"
"For now. Remember, we will be here for the weekend, so I have a lot of time..." He said, mischievously. I shook my head, and hopped out of the pool. We both ran upstairs to change for dinner. I just put back on my BDU's, and re-strapped my pistol to my thigh. You never know!
"Ah, we almost started without you two." Sean's father said from the head of the table. I smiled respectfully, and Sean just shook his head. I noticed that Derrick did not look at me, as he sat at the other head of the table. I sat next to Sean, and across from me was his mother. Timothy sat next to her. And Rolf curled up at my feet.
"Wow, this looks delicious!" I said, and did it ever! There was roast beef, with a red wine sauce. There were mash potatoes for sides, as well as a type of pasta, which I did not recognize. It was delicious though! Everyone started; ad there was little said while everyone ate.
As we were finished, Sean's father sat back in his chair, seemingly content.
"So, Chris, do tell how you found our son. I would love to hear this story!" He said.
"May I be excused?" Derrick said, barging in.
"Yes." Sean's father said sounding aggravated. Derrick got up, threw his napkin onto his plate, and stormed out of the room.
"I am so sorry Chris, please just ignore those rude manors. Now, you were about to start the story of how you met my son." He said.
"Well, I had stormed out of our camp because of an incident that had happened a few days before. I sat at my favorite tree in the forest, which I always joke is my 'office'. Well, as I was sitting there, your son commented on how I smell like a female, because I had just washed with soap." I saw him blush at the memory, and Timothy giggled. Both of his parents chuckled, and I continued. "Well, I was able to disarm both him and his comrade without a single shot being fired. I brought him back to my camp so that nobody would be hurt, and both of them agreed that they would become part of my team. And now here we sit, me talking with his parents." I said, and took a drink from the glass of water, which sat in front of me.
"Well, that is quite the interesting tale. Sean, do you have anything to add?" Sean shook his head no.
"Chris, if you wouldn't mind, how many Animorphs are in your group?" His mother asked, politely.
"There are 8 of them, ma'am. There are two horses, a husky, a Golden retriever, an very large bear, a rabbit, and Sean." I said. Both of their eyes open wide in shock.
"We didn't think there were that many. How many humans?" His father asked, still seemingly stunned.
"There are ten of us, sir, including myself." I said.
"Well, that is quite the impressive group young man. I take it that you are their leader?" He asked. I nodded yes.
"Just another question. Have you ever seen combat?" His mother asked. His father started to tell me that I didn't have to answer that, put I put my hand up politely.
"Yes ma'am, I have seen combat."
"So you have killed an Animorph, right?" She said, as if expecting the answer.
"No ma'am. I have never killed an Animorph." I said, and both of their jaws dropped in surprise.
"So you have killed no one?" His father asked. I saw Sean silently apologize to me.
"No, I have killed. I was part of the Animorph counter attack on Anderson." I said.
"Lies. Fucking lies!" I heard Derrick shout as he barged back into the room. I rested my hand on my pistol just in case things got out of hand.
"That cant be true!" He shouted, his eyes filled with anger.
"I am sorry to disappoint you, but it is true." I said, slowly getting up. I didn't want to be caught of guard. Rolf got up next to me, and stood by my side.
"Okay, what weapon did you use?" He asked, trying to prove that I wasn't there.
" I used the German mg3. I also had an m82 with me." I said. He just stood there, and then he did something that shocked everyone. He ran over and gave me a bear hug.
"My god, I was wrong about you. I thought all humans would kill and of us if they had a chance. I figured that you saw Sean as a meal ticket. But I was wrong, please forgive me!" He said.
"I will, if you let go of my arm please!" I said, and he looked confused but did. I rubbed it, because it bloody hurt!
"Are you okay?" Sean's mother asked, getting up and walking over to me.
"Yes ma'am, I am fine." I said, and cradled my hurt arm. He had accidentally ripped the stitches, and it was starting to bleed.
"My god, you are bleeding!" His father said. He glared at Derrick. "Did you have your claws out?"
"No! I would never hurt him!" He said, as he helped me into the kitchen, where there was better lighting.
"Let me take a look dear." Sean's mother said. I reluctantly allowed her, and I cringed when she gasped.
"Are these bite marks?" She asked, shocked. Well, I sure could surprise his folks...
"Yes ma'am. I scared one of my team members during a training exercise. Her name is Star. She is the Husky in our group, and out of reaction, she snapped at me. She has a lot better reaction time than me!" I said, trying to make a joke. I heard Derrick and Sean's father laugh, but his mother didn't.
"Well, I could call the doctor." She said, but then looked at the time. It was about 9:00p.m. "Oh, and he wont be available all weekend." She said.
"Ma'am, do you have a needle and thread?" I asked, and she nodded. "Well, then that's all I need. If you leave me in private, I will have this fixed in about ten minutes." I said. She looked horrified.
"There has to be another way." His father said, but he didn't say it very earnestly.
"Honestly sir, I will be fine." I said.
"I will take care of this." His mother said, and walked off upstairs. I walked over to the sink, so that I wouldn't bleed all over the clean kitchen.
His mom came back down about 2 minutes later, with gauze, scissors, and medical tape.
"Alright, we are going to fix you, and we will have the doctor look at you when possible. But I will NOT have you injure yourself in my house, and that is final." She said, and looked me in the eyes, and I smiled, and nodded.
She got up, and led me into their study. Everyone started to follow, but she turned and told them to clean up dinner, and get dessert ready. I perked up at the thought of dessert, and she noticed. She just smiled, and shut the study door. Then she did something very odd. She locked the door.
"Uh, is there something wrong?" I asked, motioning to the door.
"You said a training exercise was how you got this, right?" She said, and looked at me in the eye.
"Well, sort of." I said sheepishly, blushing slightly.
"How sort of?" She asked, sitting down in one of the chairs on the room. She motioned me over so that she could begin wrapping my arm.
I walked over, and decided to explain the real reason. "Well, I really like her. I had been horsing arou-uh, I meant messing around with her, and I took off into the woods. She chased me, and I hid. She was trying to sniff me out, and I jumped out and grabbed her playfully. She got scared and bit me. It was a complete accident."
She smiled, unlocked the door, and continued to wrap my arm in silence. I kept quiet too, and just observed how she wrapped it.
"So, is she the only one who has injured you in the camp?" She asked, breaking the silence.
"Uh, no. Sam has left me with some nasty bruises, and everyone in my camp likes to wrestle each other. Why do you ask?"
"This is going to sound sort of stupid, but I don't want my little boy hurt." She said, looking up at me and smiling.
"Don't worry ma'am, we may be a little rough, but we would never hurt him on purpose." I said, trying to reassure her. She just smiled, and finished wrapping my arm.
"Now, do you have any other injuries?" She asked, her yellow eyes seemed to bore into my very soul.
"Yes, but they have already healed." I said, and looked at the green carpet. It had a gold and red outline, but I wasn't really focused on that. I could feel the heat of her eyes boring into me.
"Let me see, please." She said.
I nodded slowly, and then removed my shirt. Other than Ahote, nobody had seen my scars. I even hid them from Star.
There where two gashes on my chest. Both started just above my left nipple, and went across my chest. They were only about a 1/4th of an inch wide, but she still sat back, with a horrified look on her face.
"I am sorry if this isn't too good looking." I said, and smiled nervously.
"Where did you get these?" She asked, shouting at me and running a paw over them in disbelief.
"Right before your son arrived, I lost a team member when a helicopter was shot down. The blast knocked me out for two days, and I am left with this. Another team member lost part of his ear lobe, so I feel bad." I said.
"Why?" She asked.
"I can hide these. He can't." I said, and just shrugged.
"What is all the commotion about?" I heard Sean's father say, before opening the door and looking at me. "Jesus! What did you do to yourself?"
"Nothing sir. It was just an accident that occurred." I said, hoping that he would leave it alone.
"What kind of accident?" He asked. Well shit.
"I will explain it later Gerry." Sean's mother said. He looked about ready to ask another question, but closed his mouth and nodded. He silently walked out of the room, and back to the dinning room. I put my shirt back on, and started to walk out after him.
"Thank you." She said. I turned around, with a confused look on my face. She smiled, and explained, "You were outright honest. Most kids your age aren't, and we have always been told that humans are liars."
"Ah. Well, I believe the human leaders are saying that animorphs are horrid too. We both can see that they lie, in some cases." I said, and winked. She smiled, and we both headed for dessert. I was not disappointed with it, and had more than my share of it. Although, out of the corner of my eye, I could see that the story on my scars was killing Sean's father.
We hung out in Sean's room for the rest of the night, playing video games and generally having lots of fun. We didn't end up going to sleep until about 3am.
As I lay on the floor, I was about to go to sleep when I heard a scratching at the door, and a faint whine. I had completely forgotten about Rolf! I sprang up and opened the door, and he barged in and tried to tackle me. I laughed, and I walked back over to my sleeping back and got back inside. He tried to come in with me, and I chuckled at his futile efforts. Finally, he just gave up and just lay next to me, near my head. He gave me one final lick on the nose before I heard him softly snore. I just smiled, and closed my eyes.
"Hey Chris, you still up?" I heard Sean ask. I knew it would be rude to just stay silent, so I said yea.
"My dad said you have some big scars on your chest. May I ask why? You don't have to respond." He said.
"No, its fine. Did anybody tell you about the helicopter that crashed, killing Zach?" I asked.
"Yea, I heard about it, and how you guys made it out of there alive." He said.
"We made it out of there alive, but the explosion was so close that it burned me, and a piece of shrapnel tore across my chest. I didn't wake up for three days after that. I was standing up in one of the turrets of the humvees. " I explained.
He stayed quiet for a very long time, before finally saying, "I am glad you made it. I don't know where I would be without you." He said. I started to tear up, and I said goodnight. He also said it, and we both went to sleep.
Rolf, who pawed lightly at my face, woke me the next morning. I grumbled, and started to fall back asleep, when he whimpered slightly.
"Alright, I'm up, I'm up." I said, and I took him outside so he could go to the bathroom. I looked around, happy with the peace and quiet. There was a heavy fog out this morning, but I didn't mind, I had gotten used to it. Once Rolf was done, he ran over to me, trying to play fight. I smiled, and ran at him. He yipped in fright, and took off.
"Shit! Rolf, come back!" I yelled in a harsh whisper. It was only 5:30! I took off after him, and I could hear him barking, as he thought this was a game.
"Rolf? You there boy?" I called out, still in a harsh whisper. He had slipped under the fence in the back of the yard, and I had to chase after him. So I had hopped the fence. I had also forgotten my pistol. Yea, it was going to be an interesting day, for sure.
"Hey! Stop!" I heard a voice yell from behind me. I froze, and slowly turned around.
What stood before me gave me one of the biggest scares. I literary fell on my ass because of what was before me. It was a black and red DRAGON!
"Jesus, relax! I don't bite, often." He said with a wicked grin. I tried to stutter out an apology, but he just held up his hand to silence me. We just sat there, looking at each other for a moment, before he walked much closer to me. I could hear him sucking in deep breaths, and I watched his nostrils flare.
"Wh-what are you doing?" I said, finally able to find words.
"Smelling you. I can figure out where you have been, what you have been doing, and if you are a threat."
I just looked at him. He stood 7'2, with black scales and wings, and a red underbelly. As he smiled at me, I was able to see rows of very, very sharp teeth, and on top of his head, he had two large horns. He was obviously a male, and seemed to be my age. He had golden eyes, which bored into me even more than Sean's mother. And he was built like a tank, with arm muscles as big around as my thigh! This guy was trying to figure out if I was the threat!?
"You done gawking at me, or do you want to continue?" He asked, and smiled again. I shivered unintentionally, and I stood up. I barely came up to his chest!
"What is your name, human?" He asked, in his deep rumbling voice.
"Christopher. Christopher Geier." I said.
"Ah, you didn't stutter that time. Better. Most humans never stop stuttering around me. But I digress. My name is Drake." He finished.
I stuck out my hand for him to shake. He looked confused for a second, but then stuck his hand out and shook my hand. He had a very firm grasp.
I started to pull my hand away, but he grasped it tighter and pulled me very close to him. He leaned down so only I could hear him.
"I can smell the gunpowder on you. You are holding secrets human." He said, and smiled. He straitened back up, and said aloud again. "So what are you doing up this early?"
"I was looking for my pup. He ran off this morning." I said. Drake looked at me thoughtfully, trying to see if I was lying.
"And have you thought that maybe he wants to be free?" He asked.
"No, I haven't. But he is too young to be out alone. He will not make it without somebody. So if you would excuse me..." I said, as I tried to walk off. He put one of his massive hands in front of me to stop me. I looked up at him, to see why he stopped me.
"I will help." He said. I knew that I couldn't argue with him, so I just shrugged.
"Alright. So, if you could smell everything on me, you probably could smell him. So which way?" I asked.
He smiled, and lifted his head to smell. He looked thoughtful for a second, and then pointed of to what I was guessing was east. I couldn't tell without a compass or the sun.
"Alright, you lead the way, oh mighty dragon." I said, and he chuckled and jogged off. I had to run to keep up with his long legs!
About half an hour later, we found him. He was huddled under somebody's porch. Drake started to reach down to get him, but now it was my turn to stop him.
"I have longer arms then you." He said, explaining his reasons.
"Yes you do. But remember, you scared me half to death. I actually know the pup." I said, and he finally nodded okay. I walked over to the porch, and called out his name. He came running out, and then quickly hid behind me. I bent down so I could pet him, and he happily licked my hands. I just smiled.
I said aloud so that Drake could hear me, "Don't worry Rolf, he is an even bigger wimp than you are." I said, and gave him a wink. I heard him laugh, but he was quiet about it, because we were on somebody else's property!
I turned to Drake, and said a simple thank you.
"No problem." He said, and looked down at his feet.
"You know, I never did ask what you were doing up so early." I said, and he just looked at me and said nothing.
I walked up very close, like he had, and said, "Now who has secrets." I just smiled.
He grinned sheepishly, and if he could, he would have blushed.
"Let me at least walk you home, for all of your help. Besides, I figure Rolf owes you as well, and he will warm up to you quick." I said, as we continued to walk back to Sean's house. We had just entered a park of sorts.
"No." He said, harshly. I unintentionally took a step back at his sudden anger. Rolf stepped in front of me, and growled slightly. I pet him, and he stopped growling, but he seemed to keep a wary eye on the black dragon.
"Sorry." He muttered, looking back down at his clawed feet. He was barefoot, like every other animorph I had seen.
"Is something the matter? Did I upset you?" I asked, daring to take a step closer. He looked at me with his golden eyes, and then did the unexpected. He started to cry.
"Jesus, are you okay?" I asked. He didn't say anything, so I used courage I didn't even know I had. I walked over and gave him a hug.
'What's the matter big guy?" I asked, and I waited for an answer. He just wrapped an arm around me and squeezed. Not hard enough to kill me, but he was slowly squeezing the air out of me.
I didn't have to say anything though, because he let go of me a minute later.
"Again, I am sorry." He said, as he whipped the tears from his eyes.
"Its fine. If you want to talk, we can. If not, we can just throw a stick for Rolf. He will love you for sure then." I said, as I nudged him playfully. He just gave a weak smile, and bent down and grabbed a stick. Rolf immediately perked up, and growled playfully. Another smile appeared across the dragons face, and he heaved the stick much farther than I thought possible.
Rolf took off after it, and I walked over and sat on a bench, which was nearby. I checked my watch. It was about 6:10am, and I hoped that Sean hadn't awakened yet. That would be bad. I figured I had another ten minutes before I had to leave.
"So Chris, where do you live?" Drake asked, breaking the silence.
"I live in Pennsylvania." I said, and I was rewarded with a look of surprise. "I am out here on, uh, vacation." I said, which wasn't really lying.
"Vacation, huh? Do you know what the name of this town is?" He asked. Shit! Sean had never told me! I had just followed the directions he gave me.
"No clue." I said finally, and he grinned at me. "What is the name of the town?" I asked.
"It is Olympia." He said, and laughed. "So what is your real story?" He said, his eyes burning holes in me.
"I can't tell you. I am sorry, but I don't know you that well." I said, as Rolf came back over and dropped the stick at my feet. I picked it up, and got up.
"It was nice meeting you Drake, and thank you for your help." I said, as I beckoned Rolf to follow me. He happily nipped at my heels.
"Wait." He said, and surprisingly I stopped. I turned and looked at him.
He cleared his throat, and said, "I have no home. My parents threw me out."
"I am sorry to hear. But may I ask, why?" He didn't say anything for the longest time, and I turned to continue to walk home.
"Because I am gay." He said finally, shuffling his feet. Well, this was interesting.
"I am sorry to hear. I mean, about your parents." I said, as I walked back over, and sat on the bench next to him. He smiled weakly again, and I could see tears forming in his eyes. I patted him on the back gently.
"Well, if you must know my story, I am from Pennsylvania, as I said before. But, we went on a vacation our here to visit a military base. It was attacked, and me and 10 of my friends escaped. We set up camp in the middle of the woods. Right now, I am visiting a friends parents who live here. And that is my story." I said.
"Something doesn't add up thought. I smell fresh gunpowder on you, and if it was attacked weeks ago, it would be long gone." He said.
"Yes, we have weapons. Only to defend ourselves. Mostly from humans, actually." I said, and he smiled.
"Yea, you can never trust the humans, they are a bunch of weak bastards." He said with a wink. I just chuckled, and got up. I offered my hand to help him up. He took it, and then grabbed me in a hug. "Thank you." He said, and I just patted him on the back, which was hard to do because of how built he was.
"I have no problem with people that are gay. But, if you lay a claw on my ass, I am going to cut it off and wear it as a necklace, got it?" I said, in mock seriousness. He just beamed and smiled.
"Alright, I am staying at a friends house. Come on, I am sure he will be happy to have another person other than me around." I said, and we walked back to Sean's house.
We got back at 6:52am, and I saw Sean sitting out by the pool. I hopped the fence, while Rolf crawled under the fence. I turned back to Drake, when suddenly I saw a dark shadow looming over me. He had flown over the fence, and landed heavily next to me. I just stood there in shock, and he grinned.
Sean just calmly walked over.
I grinned sheepishly, and said, "Rolf ran off this morning. I had to go chase him. Sorry." I said.
"Looks like you brought back two pets," Sean said, kidding. Drake just smiled, and stuck out his huge clawed hands. Sean accepted it, and invited us both in for breakfast. I had been holding them up, as they were worried about me!
We walked in, and Drake knocked his horns against the doorway, even thought he was already ducking. I just chuckled, and he just told me to shut up.
"Mom, dad, we have a new guest. Sorry bout this." He said. As he walked in front of me, I whispered in his ear, "Drake is his name." He nodded, and smiled.
His mother smiled, and motioned to a seat for Drake to sit. I smiled, ad I caught Derrick giving me a look that said he knew something was up, but I just looked pleadingly into his eyes, and he nodded and looked away.
"So what is your name son?" Sean's father asked, looking up from his paper.
"Drake, sir. It is nice to meet you." He said, happily devouring the bacon in front of him. I couldn't shun him for that; I was doing the same thing.
"So tell me a little about yourself." His mother said, and now I was listening. I really hadn't asked him any personal questions.
"I was in the 352nd air cavalry, and I was released from service. I had a slight run in my Commanding officer; he wanted me to give him money for his protection. Well, we got into a brawl and I broke his arm. He was sent off, and I was discharged. I didn't have any home to go to, and I was wandering from place to place, when I came across Chris this morning, and he invited me to his team." He said, as he finished.
Sean's father looked at me curiously. I just chuckled and explained, "I figure we can use him to scare people off, until they realize how soft he actually is." I said, and he snorted. Sean's father just shook his head, and I think he mumbled, "Boys..."
Sean, me, and Drake all went up to Sean's room to play video games. I kept laughing at Draco trying to hold the tiny controller in his hands, as he grew more and more frustrated.
"Forget this." He said finally, and just put the thing down. We both laughed, and decided to go swimming. Sean even had an extra pair of swim trunks for Drake, although they were really small on him. I just laughed, and he growled at me.
"What are you laughing about human?" He said, as he slowly crept toward me. I slowly backed up, and I saw the grin slowly creep across his face. I quickly ran right toward him, and a confused look appeared on his face.
I smiled, and quickly slid between his legs, and ran out the door, headed toward the pool. I heard Sean yell, "Wait for me!" And I laughed and yelled over my shoulder, "Every man for himself!" I also heard the thundering footsteps of Drake, and also the clicking of Rolf's nails on the wooden floors, as he chased me out the door to he pool.
I jumped in, and I heard Rolf jump in right next to me. I laughed, and grabbed him, as he squirmed. I let him go, and he paddled over to the shallow end of the pool, where there were steps where he could sit on.
Sean was the next to make it to the pool, and he hopped in beside me. He quickly hid behind me.
"What did you do to him?" I asked, as he grinned mischievously.
"Oh, nothing." He said, and then died laughing as soon as he saw, and I couldn't help myself either.
"WHERE IS HE!?" I heard him bellow, the underwear still attached to his horn.
"Uh, Drake, you have a little something on your horn..." I said, and he bellowed in rage again, and threw it off. He then dove into the pool, and didn't resurface for about a minute.
I turned to Sean, and said, "Time to get out of the pool?"
"Yea seems like a pretty good idea." He said, as he swum over to one of the ladders on the side of the pool. I swam in the other direction, because I figured that Drake would go for Sean, and I wasn't disappointed.
"Help Chris!" I heard him shout, and I turned around to see Sean being dragged under. I turned and looked at the ladder, which was only a few feet away. I could climb out and be safe. But no, my conscience got me, and I swam back over to help free Sean.
I was able to get Sean out of Drake's grip, and I pushed him toward the ladder. I then took a deep breath, and dove toward the bottom of the pool to distract Drake. It worked, but much better than I thought. He quickly took after me, grinning even underwater, his eyes glowing like hot coals. I yelped underwater, a bubble escaping my mouth. I tried to swim to the ladder again, and I almost made it. Almost.
I felt myself starting to be pulled down, until I was pushed to the surface. I broke the surface, and I figured out he was giving me a chance to get a fresh breath, and I took it. I tapped his hand, and I felt myself going down again.
Once we hit the bottom, he put a claw over his lips, for me to be quite. He quickly swam back up to the surface, aided by his powerful tail I heard some shouting, and then I saw Sean go back in the pool. I smiled, and slowly surfaced again, this time though I grabbed Sean and yanked him down. I heard him yelp and try to thrash out of my grip.
I let him go, and swam toward the ladder. I grabbed it, and hauled myself out of the pool. I collapsed on the concrete surrounding the pool, and Rolf came over and started licking my face. I just lay there, trying to catch my breath. I heard Sean get out as well, and he laid down next to me. Drake was the finally one to leave the pool. The water just streamed off of him, and he sat next to me, on my left.
"Well gentleman, that was one hell of a workout." I said, and both of them laughed. We then all took turns throwing a stick for Rolf, who finally gave up and collapsed at my feet in exhaustion.
"Now what?" Sean asked, looking at both of us while petting Rolf.
"Time for lunch!" I heard his mother called, and we all took off for the house.
"Alright boys, I have laid out all different kinds of meats, as well as mayo and a few other things. All of us have already eaten, so take as much as you want!" Sean's mother said, as she headed out to the front porch, with Derrick in tow behind her. I gave him a wave, and he waved back. I was really happy that he wasn't trying to kill me anymore!
Once we had our sandwiches, we headed out to the back patio, and sat a good-sized table that had an umbrella to give us shade. Rolf lay at our feet.
"So Drake, what kind of music do you listen to?" I asked, trying to start a conversation. He had to choke down all of the food he stuffed in his mouth.
"Heavy metal, all the way!" He said, laughing.
"Really? Me too!" Sean said, as he leaped up, and took off into the house.
"Bleh, that is crap." I said, as I took a civilized bite out of my roast beef sandwich.
"And what do you listen to?" Drake asked, now working on his third sandwich.
"I listen mostly to rock, but I do have a love of orchestra, mostly the strings." I said, and he looked confused at me. "What? You have a problem with that tough guy?" I asked, puffing up my chest. He almost choked on his sandwich laughing... I just shook my head.
Sean came back out 2 minutes later, with his Ipod and a speaker set.
"Drake you are going to love this!" He said, and started blaring his horrid music.
After about 5 minutes of listening to that crap, I turned it off. Both of them looked at me, and I explained.
"Your music is horrible." I said simply, and both looked at each other, and then smiled.
"What the hell are you two thinking?" I asked, slowly getting up from my chair.
"Well, remember that favor you owe me?" Sean said, and I nodded my head slowly.
"Well, we both are still starving, and we wanted to go into town. So, you are driving!" Drake said, and I just laughed and nodded yes. Both smiled, and jumped up.
"Shotgun!" Sean yelled, and took off to the front of the house.
"Wait, have you asked your parents yet?" I called, and he grinned and took off into the house. A minute later, I heard the Durango's horn blaring.
I looked over at Drake, and said, "I will take that as a go ahead." He chuckled, and walked around the house and got into the backseat. I hoped into the front, and was about to close the door when I remembered something.
"Shit, I will be back in a sec." I said, and ran into the house. I ran up to Sean's room, and grabbed my pistol. I slipped on the holster, and ran back out to the still running Durango. I took it out of park, and we headed off to downtown Olympia.
"Well, where shall we go first?" I asked, and both of them started to argue where we should go to eat. They finally agreed on a diner called "Shellie's". Simple enough name.
We parked, and got out. I slowed down, and Sean walked in to go get us a booth, I handed Drake five $20 dollar bills.
"No, I couldn't. I am not even hungry." He lied.
"Really, I am still hungry. You are TWO TIMES BIGGER than me! Just take it as a gift for not eating me when we first met." I said, as I walked toward the diner. He knew there was no arguing with me, so he put the money in a wallet he kept in his pant pocket.
"Jeez, what took you guys so long?" Sean said, already having a drink in his hand, sitting in a booth near the entrance. He sat on the left side, and I sat with him, only because I wouldn't fit with Drake!
"We were still arguing over music." I said, and gave a wink to Drake. He just shook his head, but stayed quite. Our waitress walked over, notepad in hand. She was a skunk, and seemed to be about 20.
"What can I get you hun?" She asked, looking at Drake.
"I will take a coke." He said.
"Pepsi okay?" She asked, and he nodded. "Alright, I will be right back." She said, and walked off. I looked confused, but I figured she was new.
She was back within the minute, and handed Drake his drink. There was nobody else in the diner, except an elder couple of squirrels sitting at the counter.
"Alright, what would you two like?" She asked, and I butted in.
"Would I be able to get a drink please?"
She scoffed, and stated, "We don't serve humans here." I raised my eyebrows in confusion, but said nothing else.
"Well then, can we have the bill? We will be leaving now." Sean said, and that took the waitress by surprise. Drake seemed to have the same feeling.
"No, you two are hungry. Just grab some food, and then we can head into town. I will be fine." I said.
"Are you sure?" Drake asked, his deep rumbling voice seemed to shake my chest.
"Yes. Now, order your food!" Both looked at each other, and then got what they wanted. Sean got spaghetti and meatballs, and Drake got a bronco burger with a side of fries.
"Alright, they will be ready in about 5 minutes." She said, and walked away.
"Well, that was interesting." I said, and both of them just shook their heads.
"I can't believe that she was that rude." Sean said.
"Well, what are you going to do?" I asked, and shrugged my shoulders.
"We could have left." Drake said, staring me down with his golden eyes.
"See? We still can." Sean said, his eyes boring into me too.
"And what? You two would have been hungry, and then we would have had to stop somewhere in town that you two couldn't agree on! So, we are going to stay here, and you two are going to eat! And I might steal a few fries from Drake." I said, and he growled at me. "Or maybe not." I said, and he chuckled.
The food arrived later than she said, but I was not too surprised. She asked if they needed anything else, and then walked off. I quick snatched a few fries from Drake, and he growled playfully.
"No wrestling in here! We would destroy the place, and give them another reason to hate humans!" I said, and he just shook his head.
They finished in about 15 minutes, and then we left. We were going to go visit the harbor, hoping to rent out one o the sailboats in the harbor. I had a little sailing experience, but Sean knew how to properly sail. Drake was just along for the ride, as well as some needed muscle here and there!
We reached the harbor with in the half hour, and I told them that they weren't allowed to go sailing for another 15 minutes, so they had time to digest their food. Drake just grabbed me, threw me over his shoulder with ease, and carried me onto the boat. I struggled to get out of his grasp, but he wouldn't let me go. Finally, I just gave up.
The boat was just a small schooner. It was about 40 feet long, with two main sails. It even boasted a small cabin! It had a steering wheel that looked like it had been taken off a much bigger ship and slapped onto this dingy. The boats name was the Slipknot.
Sean got us safely out of the harbor, and we headed out for the open ocean.
"So Chris, where in your little group do you fall in? I smelled the cordite on you, so I know that you have weapons."
I looked over at Sean, and smiled. He just shook his head.
"I am the groups leader, Mr. Drake. So yes, you will have to take orders from me!" I said, and he raised an eyebrow at me. "Don't worry, I am not a slave driver, too often." I finished, and Sean just chuckled.
"And what of you Sean? Where are you in this group? I will take it the humans have all of the important roles taken. What are you, the house cat?" Drake said
I heard Sean growl, and I glared at Drake. He looked down at the deck, and apologized.
"Its fine. And I am no housecat. I am the only mechanic for these guys, which is a big job with how fast they go through vehicles. Especially when they take them tearing off road." Sean said, and glared at me. I guess he hadn't forgot about me taking the Durango off-road yet.
"So what weapons do you both use?" He asked.
"Well, I for one go light. Just an m-16. I traded in my Ak; I just didn't like the sight picture of it. I don't have a sidearm, but I always carry a knife with me." He said, unsheathing a holdout knife I never knew he had. I must have had a surprised look on my face, because he laughed.
"And what of you Chris?" Drake asked, his eyes again boring into me. I searched the horizon, looking out for trouble.
"I use the German m416. A good rifle, if complex, and a real pain to clean. I do to have my own sidearm, but I probably should." I said. Drake looked down at my hip, where the g18 rested peacefully. I just gave him a smile, and he shook his head.
We stayed out on the water for most of the day, questioning each other. Some of the questions were funny, of course some were dirty, and even a few were personal.
"Alright, it is starting to get late, and I do not want to be stuck out in the Pacific when it gets dark." I said, and Sean agreed. Drake on the other hand, laughed.
"I can fly. You two would be stuck out here alone!" Both Sean and me looked at each other, and then jumped on Drake. He was still so BIG that neither one of us could bring him down. He threw Sean into the water, while I still held desperately to his right arm. He threw me, I guess aiming for the water. Instead, I smashed into the mast, and before I had even hit the deck, the world had turned black.
