Welcome to Nexus: Chapter 1
#1 of Welcome to Nexus: Year One
I was only fifteen when I first discovered who I was...what I was. My parents had always excepted me for whatever choices I made in life, they had never abandoned me in my times of need or forsook me when I was alone. I had just barely begun to understand the world when I learned my very own origin of species...
"Jarra! Come downstairs sweetie, we're eating dinner soon!" my mother called from the bottom of the stairs.
"Coming mom! Just a minute!" I called back and quickly pulled a band shirt over my naked chest. I didnt normally wear shirts or even clothes for that matter around my room, I felt too constricted, but my parents never found out because they always knocked before they came in. But I was never one to wear a bra, never, not even in public. They're just not my thing, I have nothing against them.
I jumped the bottom two stairs and swung along the end of the banister to land in the hallway. My family had always been very nimble, "Quick in foot and even quicker in wit" is what my father had always said.
"Ok, here I am! Let's eat!" I said excitedly as i sat down and looked at the table. There was some kind of meat i had never seen my mom cook before. I had no idea what it was, but I would soon find out. It looked a bit like a wild boar minus the tusks mixed with a large spider. It looked positively revolting, but smelled absolutely delicious.
"Hey mom? Excuse my language, but what the hell is that thing?" I asked my mom, who was busy working on cleaning the pots beforehand so she didn't have to clean them later. She looked at me.
"This is something I haven't tried cooking in hundreds of years, it's called a Krillid. Very tasty, very rare to find, but your father managed to find one!" she said happily.
"Hundreds of years? What?" I asked.
"Oh...um- nevermind it was only a figure of speech," she said rather hastily. Her gaze quickly turned to the driveway, visible through the kitchen window. "Oh, look! Your father made it just in time!"
"Yea...wonderful," I said, almost to myself, as my mother had left the kitchen to go and greet my father. At this point I was so very confused, I didn't really know what to do. This wierd-ass creature lying dead on my plate, my mom's strange attitude. I just decided to think nothing of it and move on to see my father. My father...probably the strangest man I have ever known. And even though he was my father, I barely knew anything about him. My parents both walked in at the same time, Dad carrying a letter in his hands. It said in large Gregorian-style writing, "Nexus: School for The Abnormal".
"What's that?" I asked my parents, who were smiling strangely.
"What? No hello?" my dad asked jokingly. I smiled and walked over, giving my loving father a big hug. He smiled and hugged me back. When I stepped back, I asked again: "What is that?"
"Well...Jarra...we have something to tell you I suppose. Come and sit in the living room," Dad said and walked into the living room and sta down, closely followed by mom. I hesitated for a minute or two, then walked into the living room. I sat down on the couch across from them.
"What is it guys?" I asked, beginning to get both worried and confused. What did that letter mean? Where did it come from?
"Well, we think we've finally found a school for you. It's a very, very good school, one of the best in the world!" Dad said confidently. I raised one of my eyebrows in interest. I was always terrible in school. Never paid attention, never got good test scores, never did my homework. Y'know, all the good stuff. They finally expelled me last month and my parents have been trying to find a good school for weeks. I always got into fights as well in my old school, I was unbeatable. Every girl or guy I fought was sent home in pain. I found I had exceptional physical power and strength in addition to my speed and agility. I was and still am a force to be reckoned with. Never knew why...I don't look all that buff and I don't work out all that much...
"Could I see the letter?" I asked my proud father. He nodded and handed it to me. It read: "Good afternoon, evening, or morning. We at the Nexus School for the Abnormal have looked over your son/daughter's previous school records and have agreed that it would be our absolute honor if he/she would attend our establishment. Please, if you still wish to enroll your child, drop them off or accompany them to the train station nearest you. There will be one of our agents waiting to guide all students enrolled in that area to the train leading to Nexus. Please provide them with all the materials they would have if they were going to college or on a long trip. This will be all, we will take care of the rest.
Again, Thank you for honoring us with your child's presence and we will make it our solemn vow to teach them all we know.
Have a nice day, night, you get the drill..."
"Wait, a boarding school? You're sending me to a boarding school? I know my attitude is not the best but you can't do this to me!!!" I screamed loudly, almost yelling. "And what the hell do they mean 'Abnormal'?!"
"Now dear, you need to relax. This is really one of the best schools for our kind," Mom said kindly.
"Our kind?! Alright, you guys are acting absolutely crazy! Tell me what's going on right now!" I shouted at them. Dad sighed deeply.
"I knew that this day would come. Jarra...your mother and me...we're not what we may look like...we're...demons..."
