Shade's Awkward Walk
#1 of Short Stories (Rough Drafts)
Just a small start to a series of short stories I will be creating.
This one introduces a shy paranoid Human called Shade as he takes a walk.
Shade yawned as he walked, surprised at how tired he was. His hood covering his drowsiness as he walked past the knights in the park. At least he thinks its a park, it had more trees and benches on this path than most of the village. The cobblestone path crunched under his feet, the sun beating down on his hood making him sweat under his hooded cloak, but he didn't care. He was used to being hot so much, he gets cold if he was not bordering the sweat zone. This of course meant he had to drink more fluids, but he was happy for the trade. Wishing after all to not reveal his complete presence amidst the village, or any populace now that the thought about it.
The thought of strangers seeing his pale skin, black hair, and his pale green eyes made him nervous and he held his arms closer to his body. Hoping no one could see his eyes dart from one individual to the other, 'I bet if I didn't have my cloak on they would stare at me... Judge me, think of me as a nut... I mean sure I have strange thoughts but I am sure everyone does right? No, of course they don't, that is how everyone would reply.' he thought to himself. His hands digging further into his pockets as he walked past two female canines talking to each other, giggling and chatting to each other as they toss seeds to the birds.
'No... I'm certain the individuals in this settlement are friendlier... they never seemed to stare at my way the wrong way, and no one asks me why I wear this clothing.... Unless if they want me to feel safe, and they are just watching me when I am not looking at them... Yes, that is most likely the case... What am I thinking, of course that is the case... They are most likely talking about me right now...'
He freezes as he feels a very light weight on his shoulder, 'Oh no, they saw me! Just turn around slowly and try to be friendly, do not be rude and answer all questions honestly. Do not waver your voice, and what ever you do do not make eye contact!' He turned slowly and flinched as he sees a small robin perched on his shoulder. Sighing in relief he held up his gloved hand, stroking the creature softly on the head. 'Oh, it was just a bird... how silly of me... I hope no one saw my over reaction.' Shade held out a finger to the bird, offering a new perch. The robing stared at him briefly before hopping onto the finger, spreading its wing to stretch and giving a tweet as it groomed itself.
Shade admired the colors of the bird, not noticing the two canines walking up behind him, their eyes glittering with surprise and joy at the gentle man in the hood, surprised indeed were their faces, gawking at the bird perching on its hand. The bigger of the two women tap him on the shoulder. Shade thinking it was another bird turned his head slowly, flinching as he saw the grey furred hand on his shoulder. He turned around quickly, the bird still perched on his finger as he turns to face the women.
He now is able to see that the taller one is a grey female wolf, wearing a yellow sleeveless shirt and loose khakis. The other being a few inches smaller was a female fox with a long red dress, a her hair flowing down over her shoulders. Both of them bending over slightly, their hand on their knees and their tails swaying back and forth in sync. Both of them stare at the bird perched on his hand, their head level to the bird. Shade unsure what they were after nervously waited for a response. After about fifteen long minutes of no reply from either women and of them simply giggling and watching the bird groom itself on his finger he shook nervously, hoping they would not see him doing so.
He finally spoke up, clearing his throat as his deep clear voice spoke from behind his hooded face, "Excuse me, was there something you two ladies are after?"
He flinched as both of them immediately turned their heads up to him, the wolf's head tilted in confusion at his hidden face. They both giggle and straighten up, the fox girl's face blushed slightly, 'How are they able to blush through their fur I shall never understand...' Shade thought to himself. They both were of normal height, even though the wolf's head only came up to his collar bone, they both even started gawking at this, apparently not realizing how tall he was before they came over.
"We were wondering.." muttered the Vixen shyly.
"How you were able to call that bird to you." Said the She-wolf, finishing the shy one's sentence for her.
"Well... I did not charm this robin, it simply came to me..." Spoke Shade nervously, hoping they can not see his sweating face.
"No way!" Spoke up the Wolf woman, her tail wagging harder now, "Surely you called him, there is no way he just came to you."
"Well... I can whistle..." he replied, "However I assure you I did not... If you wish I could whistle for you..." The Fox woman nods happily, clearly curious as to how he is able to do this, and maybe even enjoying the cloaked figure's presence.
Shade looks at both of them, confused at why they were acting like this to him. Truly not wishing to draw attention to him by whistling, wondering if it would count as disturbing the peace. Never the less he said he would whistle and so he would. He let in a soft breath of air and closed his lips slightly, letting his breath to carry out a soft low whistle, doing a small tune that was common in his homeland for children to whistle whenever at play. At the sound of him finishing he was shocked as a small flock of bird flew to him. All of different species and all chirping happily. Perching on not only his shoulder but his hood, elbow, and his outstretched hand.
The women could not help but do shushed giggles and they wagged their tail even faster, whispering to each other and pointing at each one. They both soon stop however and look directly at his face, Shade sweated harder, unsure if a bird pulled his hood back and revealed his face. The two women seemed entranced, grinning and holding each other's hand softly, the act only making Shade even more nervous.
"The birds must really like you..." Whispered the wolf, her bright blue eyes trying to pierce through the shadow of his hood.
"They must know you are a gentle soul sir..." The fox woman whispers at him, her smile making Shade's cheeks blush slightly.
'Oh please tell me my hood is still on... They are both so beautiful... I would hate to scare them away...' He could not help but shiver slightly as the girls took a step forward, perfectly in sync again, 'What are they doing... no wait.. are they trying to see my face?!'
Shade took a step back, nervously trying to not allow them the sight of his face. The birds reply with a in sync chirp and they all fly off, excluding the robin that still sat on his hand. The girls giggled at this and continued to step forward, clearly not focusing on the birds anymore.
Suddenly with a loud chirp the Robin flew off, flying up Shade's face and pulling his hood back with him. Making his hood fold onto his back, revealing his black unkempt hair, and his very pale skin to the two girls, his pink blushing cheeks clearly visible on his white cheeks. They gasp in awe as they see he is a human, no trace of pointy ears or anything Anthro on him. Shade is so surprised and in shock he can not move, his legs frozen in place as his white cheeks flush pink. His slate green eyes darting back and forth between the two women, wishing that he could run.
The She-Wolf is the first to act, she recovers at the shock and grins, her tail slowly wagging. The fox woman's hands wrapped around the wolf's as she flinched when the hood was removed, her bright red eyes piercing his flesh as she can not help but blush and wag her tail harder than her friends. The wolf woman is opening her mouth to speak and Shade's eyes immediately dart to her her sharp white canines.
This being the motivation his legs need as he quickly turns and runs. Pulling his hood over his head quickly as he dashes away from them. They both raise their tails in surprise at this and dash after him. Yelling him to come back as they try to catch up to him.
Shade sweats more as the running makes him hotter under his heavy cloak, trying not to look back as he quickly sidesteps into a open alley. The canine women running after him with all their might, the fox's tail wrapping around the bottom of her dress so it doesn't fly up while they give chase. The wolf's tail thrashing behind her as she jogs after him. Shade runs down a few blocks before he makes a sudden turn, hoping to throw off the women.
He manages a few steps before tripping and falling, landing face first into something soft.
Getting up slowly and shaking his head, his hand going to his hood and pulling it down. At the sound of crying his eyes suddenly open, seeing now that the crying was coming from a small girl that broke his fall. She was a small cat girl, in human terms she would be about 7 years of age, her bright red tail standing straight behind her as she is laying on the graveled road, wiping her eyes as tears fall onto her white dress .
Shade bites his bottom lip as he forgets all about the women, crouching down to the small cat girl, "Are you ok?... I hope I did not injure you..."
The girl shakes her head and stops rubbing one of her eyes, looking down and pointing at something beside her. Shade looks beside her and sees what is wrong now. A small straw doll lays beside her, its small tail broken off and the clay head shattered. Shade picks up the pieces of it and holds it in his hands, showing her the damage. She cries louder now and starts to sob, her tail starting to twitch.
"Shh, do not cry young one... Do you want me to fix your doll?" Shade whispers to her, his right gloved hand rubbing her cheek softly, wiping a tear away from her face.
The girl looks at him and nods, her ear's perked up and her sobbing stopped. She still cries however as tears continue to roll down her cheek, "Can y-you really fix Lacy for m-me sir?"
Shade smiles at the name and nods, "Of course I can, and she will look good as young one. Here watch."
Shade pulls his hand back and covers the shattered clay head with both gloved hands, a faint glowing shining from within closed hands. As he opens them the head is revealed, showing a now perfectly fine head of a cat. The little girl smiles at this, her tears no longer flowing as she stares in amazement. Shade chuckles and takes the tail and body, covering them with the head. The light glowing from his hands now brighter. Revealing his hands once more, a now perfectly normal cat girl doll now there. He gently gives it to the girl who happily hugs it.
She then quickly jumps onto Shade, hugging him tightly and nuzzling his shoulder, "Thank you sir! She is better than before, see her dress isn't torn up." The girl stops hugging him and stands back, showing him the dress of the doll, giggling with happiness as she twirls around with it.
Shade smiles at this and suddenly freezes as he hears a synchronized "Aww." from behind him. He turns slowly as sees the two women from before standing two feet away from him. Their tails wagging slowly and giving him the weirdest smile, making him flinch as he did not even notice them approach. 'How long were they standing there!?' He thought to himself.
Shade quickly stand up and runs, patting the cat girl on the head as he dashes away. The Two canines run after him, now out of their trance as they try to catch him, "Hey stop!" The wolf yells at him.
Shade runs faster down the street, thinking to himself as he tries to escape the sight of the women, 'Oh why does it have to be on a sunny day this happens, I'm burning up in these clothes!'
