Ryan' Story Part XIX
#22 of Ryan
It's that time again!
"It would be good for him, Beth," Sulvius said as she paced back and forth in her apartment.
"I'm not sure."
"He should get to know other dragons his age."
"But Ryan hates school!"
"How well I know!" Sulvius laughed. "I was his counselor, remember? He didn't care for school because everyone made fun of him and he had to be careful of what he was, leaving in fear of discovery. No dragon would make fun of the prince and dragons really aren't prone to that sort of behavior anyway. They're far more likely to simply wrestle over matters at that age."
"Oh that's reassuring!"
Sulvius snorts. "Part of growing up as a young male. Everyone does it and it is actually instinctive not to try to hurt each other. Dominance play, I guess you would call it in animals, dragons being intelligent of course."
She sighed. "I should probably ask his father."
"I would not dream of telling you what to do, but I'm not sure that's a good idea."
She sighed. "Oh, you're probably right as he'd likely say no. Even still, I am his wife and he is my husband. It's only right that I ask him; he is head of the household. Allen is just protective of him, that's all."
Sulvius lifted a hand. "I know and that's fine. He does need to learn, however, not to be so much so that it interferes with his growth."
"We've had that discussion many times over the years. I'm sure Allen will adjust, just try to remember that he's had to keep Ryan safe all these years and now? Everyone wants to know him, learn about him, and they're all dragons no less. Please be patient with him."
"We are," Sulvius promised. "Do you know if he golfs?"
"He and his father play now and again."
"Think he would mind playing a few rounds with Kehros and I?"
"Wouldn't hurt to ask him. Why?" she asked curiously.
"Kheros and I would like to get to know him better and vice versa. Golfing would allow us to talk in a more neutral environment. It's harder to be upset with someone if you know them and maybe we can give him a better feel for dragonkind."
Beth nodded. "That would be wonderful."
Sulvius smiled. "Should you tell him or should we? Perhaps you should talk to him first?"
She grinned. "Oh, leave him to me!"
"Now I thought he was the head of the household and you were the properly submissive wife?" Sulvius teased.
Beth laughed. "I am and he is, but submissive doesn't mean meek, mild, or that I don't have my own opinion and have no problems at all expressing it. Believe me, he knows when I don't agree with him!"
Sulvius laughed. "Yes, I could see that. I shall leave him to you, great lady."
"Ryan!" Sulvius called across the garden where he was walking with Tanner. The little dragon's ears came up and he made his away over to Sulvius, looking up at the older dragon curiously, ears perked.
"Yes, Sulvius?"
Sulvius crouched down. "How you would like to go to school and meet some dragons your age?"
Ryan took a step back, looking wary. "I know not."
"We've discussed it before and you were interested then," Sulvius said, cocking his head.
Ryan looked down. "That was just talk. Now you are asking me if I really wish to."
He reached out and very carefully pet Ryan, not wanting the young dragon to feel as if he were pitying him. "They will not laugh or make fun of you, Ryan."
"Why, because I am the prince and so very special?" Ryan said, a hint of bitterness in his voice.
"No, because you're a smart young dragon and dragons, at least in this class, get along with each other most of the time."
"Why?"
"Because Trisk will do all sorts of horrible things to them if they disobey her!" Sulvius said with a grin. "She can be rather stern if needed, but she is a very good teacher, both her and her mate."
"Oh," Ryan said and looked up at Tanner.
"Go ahead, Ryan. It would be good for you to meet other dragons, as Sulvius said," Tanner encouraged.
Ryan swallowed nervously. "I do not suppose that Tanner could come and watch?"
Sulvius glanced at Tanner who shrugged. "That would be up to Trisk," Sulvius said.
"I'm sure you can manage without me, Ryan; you're a big dragon," Tanner said in a soothing voice.
"It is not that I am not a big dragon, Tanner it is just--" he broke off, looking confused.
Sulvius stood. "Come on you two; lets ask Trisk and see what she thinks."
As they walked towards the house Sulvius observed Tanner and Ryan and how they interacted. Ryan seemed to lean into Tanner every so often and look up to him, as if checking to see what Tanner thought. Sulvius frowned before he caught himself and schooled features into a more neutral expression. While he could understand Ryan liking Tanner and wanting him around, the dependance the young dragon seemingly displayed was a little disconcerting. He made a mental note to ask Athena and Trisk about it later.
They arrived at the classroom and Ryan peered through the open door, trying to keep back as much as possible so he could not be seen. The room was huge, as any room built for dragon would be. The walls were like most any classroom, with various charts and diagrams on them. A chart of the alphabet in latin letters and in another form that he did not recognize graced one wall and a chart with some of the various dragon breeds on it was on another. A small dragon skeleton sat in one corner caught Ryan's attention along with a chart that diagramed the bones in a dragons wing.
Four young dragons were squealing as they chased a ball about, trying to bat it away from each other. Two of them look dot be of Sulvius' breed while another looked like a version of Kheros in miniature. There was also a little female that looked a lot like Athena. As he watched them play, his tail started to twitch, as if it, at least, wanted to join in the fun. Ryan look up at Sulvius and Tanner and they both smiled. "Shall we go inside?" Sulvius asked.
Ryan looked back into the room, memories of the class at camp coming back to him. He shook himself. These were dragons and they would be understanding, wouldn't they? He took a deep breath. "Ok."
Sulvius lead them into the room. As they walked across the floor to where Trisk was leaning against her desk, the younglings stopped their play and looked at them curiously. Ryan instantly felt self conscious and stepped towards Tanner, lowering his head a little, keeping his eyes averted.
"It is not polite to stare; go back to your game," Trisk called.
"Yes Lady!" the young dragons said and went back to playing, occasionally casting glances their direction.
Trisk crouched down and smiled at Ryan. She was clearly of Sulvius' breed as well, bi colored, her colors being a deep red with cream highlights. "You must be Ryan," she said warmly
Ryan nodded, noting that she did not call him prince. "Yes ma'am."
She grinned even bigger. "The draconic address is Lady, but that is all well and good. I know that you were not raised with us and do not know all of our customs and ways."
Ryan started to apologize when she laughed and stopped him. "Nonsense! You have nothing to apologize for! If anything your life must have had some very unique and interesting experiences, being a dragon raised by humans."
Ryan looked at her with an unbelieving expression. "Interesting?"
"Yes, quite! You have seen thing from a perspective that no dragon or very few before you have seen. You should be proud of your experiences."
Ryan looked away. "It has not all been so very good, I fear."
She reached out and stroked his muzzle, causing him to draw back a short ways. "Good or bad, you will find that there has not been so many bad times as compared with the good. Good and bad are part of life, Ryan, and I think you will find as you get older that a lot of the bad times turned to your benefit. All things work towards the good, you see."
Ryan blinked. "Romans 8:28."
She cocked her head. "What's that, Ryan?"
He looked confused. "The bible!"
She laughed. "Oh yes, I thought it sounded familiar. What does it say?"
"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose."
She smiled. "It is very close, is it not?"
"Where does your quote come from?"
"Draconic Wisdom."
"Is that a book?"
"Some of it has been written down, yes, but it is also in the hearts of all dragons who will listen."
"I would love to learn more!" Ryan said eagerly.
"And I would love to teach it to you," she said fondly, storming his muzzle again. "But that is not what we are on today, and I fear I must keep the scheduled for the others. Would you like to meet them?"
Ryan looked over his shoulder nervously. "I think so."
"They won't bite, you know."
He looked her in the eye. "It is not physical bites I fear."
She crooned to him. "They will treat you as one of their own, my prince."
He looked down. "You know," he said softly.
Set pet him. "All of us who will be working with you know, my prince. The students do not, however, and need not if you do not wish them to."
"I think it best that they do not," Ryan said, looking up at Tanner and Sulvius for approval. They both nodded and he looked back at Trisk. "May Tanner observe us?"
She looked at him. "You are a dragon friend?"
He nodded. "Three generations"
She smiled. "Then you are welcome to observe, so long as you do not interfere or reveal what you hear. But you know that!"
He laughed. "I do indeed. This will not be the first group of young dragons that I have observed in class. I have done some teaching of younglings myself."
She beamed. "Very good! I think we need more humans to teach our people. I breeds a familiarity that actually avoids contempt." She stood. "I am fine with you being here, but you must leave if I ask it."
He nodded. "Of course."
"Alright then," she said and made a chirping call. The young dragons instantly stopped their game and swarmed over to her, sitting back on their haunches before her, looking up at attention.
"Students, we have two visitors with us today. One of them will be observing us," she said, pointing to Tanner. "Tanner is a dragon friend. Treat him with the same courtesy and respect you would any dragon."
"Yes, Lady!" they all said, almost in unison. They turned and lowered their heads slightly to Tanner. "Sir," they said.
"Young ones," Tanner replied, inclining his head.
"And our visiting student is Ryan," she said, gesturing to him.
"I am pleased to meet you," he said a little nervously.
They looked at each other, confused. "You are supposed to say, 'Greetings, I hope it is well with you'" the young female chirped.
Ryan ducked his head. "I did not know. Greetings, I hope it is well with you."
"And you as well," they all said in near unison, nodding their heads.
Trisk smiled. "Ryan is not so very familiar with our ways. There s a reason for it and perhaps we will find out more about it as we get to know him better. Ryan has had some very interesting experiences. If we treat him well, perhaps he will share."
The other four looked at him with more interest and Ryan ducked his head, looking at Tanner for support. Tanner just nodded and smiled.
"Let's introduce ourselves," Trisk said. "As you well know, my name is Trisk."
The first little male, a tan and brown dragon of Sulvius' breed said. "My name is Phineas."
The next little male, a red on red dragon of Sulvius' breed reared back and gave a small little roar. "My name is Jarius, and I am going to be a council me member!"
"Are not!" Phineas said, smacking him on the muzzle.
"Will!" Jarius said, ducking down.
"Stop it, both of you!" Trisk said firmly. "You would not wish for Ryan to think that neither of you had manners would you?"
"Sorry, Lady," they both said.
The third male, who was considerably larger than the other two, said, "My name is Karsos." His voice was already starting to deeming, taking on a deep timbre. He was clearly of Kheros' breed and Ryan wondered if they were related.
The little dragoness looked at Ryan shyly. "My name is Rose." She was daintily built, with a short stubby muzzle, and one tooth that stuck out even with her jaws closed.
"Her name is really Rosarlyn, but Rose is easier!" Jarius said boldly.
"I can speak to myself, Jer!" Rose said, annoyed.
"For yourself, dear," Trisk corrected and Rose smiled at her.
Phineas looked at Ryan curiously and Ryan was glad he was in his full form, not his small one. "Is Ryan short for anything?"
Ryan shook his head. "No, just Ryan."
"Sounds human," Karsos said curiously.
"It is," Ryan said softly and they looked even more interesting.
"A human name? How very interesting," Rose said warmly and Ryan looked at her gratefully.
"Now students, that is hardly unusual. Many dragons have human names, some with different meanings, others have names that could be either. Some dragons even have names from ancient languages or names that would not generally be used as a human name," Trisk said.
Jarius rumbled. "Like Pax! His name means peace in some old human language!"
"You only know that because he told you," Karsos said good humoredly.
Jarius growled and Trisk chirped, causing him to duck. "Jarius, you need to be calm."
"Yes, Lady," he said, sounding abashed.
Ryan look dat the four of them, not sure what to make of it all. They were acting, more or less, just like a bunch of human children! He looked over at Tanner, who had moved to the side of the room,. He rumbled at little worriedly but Tanner shook his head and mouthed "You're fine."
Ryan swallowed nervously and Trisk suddenly clapped her hands tighter. All of the dragons stood up straight, even Ryan."Alright, guess what time it is?"
"Flying!" Jarius roared, unfurling his wings.
"No it is not!" Phineas said. "We fly on Mondays! This is Wednesday. It is time for exercise!"
"A nap sounds better," Karsos yawned.
Rose smiled shyly. "Are we going to learn history?"
"That is almost it, Rose," Trisk said.
They all looked at her, eyes wide with curiosity, ears perking so far forward they seemed as if they would pop of their heads. "We are going to learn about human government and a little history!"
"Boring!" Jarius said.
"I like it!" Phineas said, snarling at him.
Karsos yawned again. "It will not be boring will it? I think I should fall asleep if it were."
"Learning about humans is a good thing and it is interesting; the both of you know it. You were asking about human food yesterday," Rose said.
"Food is always interesting!" Jarius said.
"Is that why you are getting fat?" Phineas said a little spitefully.
Trisk's tail flicked him across the snout. "Apologize!"
Phineas squeaked, startled. "Sorry, Jer."
"Accepted."
Trisk grunted. "Human studies are important, as Rose said, you always enjoy them so why fuss?"
"Because he likes to fuss," Rose said and Jarius glared at her. She just smiled at him and he ducked his head.
"So let's go lay down on the mats and learn, shall we?" Trisk said.
They all nodded and padded over to where four mats lay out on the floor in front of a large dry erase board. Ryan looked for his place but did not see one. Trisk brought out a mat for him and he bobbed his head. "Thank you, Lady."
"You are most welcome, Ryan. Just lay down like you see the others."
He looked at them and they were all laying out flat on the mats with their fore claws neatly crossed and their heads up, tails curled about them. Wings partially extended. Ryan mimicked them, though he did not understand why.
Trisk went to the board and pulled down a map of the USA. "Where are we now?" she asked.
"Arizona!" Jarius roared and Ryan winced, thinking that Jarius liked to roar a bit much.
"Correct, but you did not wait to be recognized," Trisk said disapprovingly. Jarius ducked, looking embarrassed. "What country is it in?" she asked and Rose lifted the tip of her tail. "Yes, Rose?"
"The United States."
"Very good, Rose," Trisk said and Rose closed her eyes, thrumming softly in pleasure. "Being as this is where we are currently living, we will start with the United States Government." Ryan sighed mentally; they had just gone over this in school.
Trisk gave a brief overview of the government, how congress worked, the three branches, and a few other odds and ends that Ryan had heard before. She turned to the group and smiled. "So, who can tell us who the first president of the United States was?" The young dragons looked at each other and Phineas raised his tail, frowning. "Yes Phineas?"
"I am not so very certain, but was it not the human called Ronald Reagan? I think I heard my father speak of him once."
"First, we do not call humans 'that human'. Would you wished to be called 'that dragon'? Of course not! Second, no, he was not the first."
Rose lifted her tail. "Abraham Lennon?"
Trisk smiled. "Lincoln, dear, and no he was not the first, though he was a great president."
The other two looked baffled ad Jarius grumbled. "Who would know? We have not been taught this!"
Ryan hesitantly lifted the tip of his tail. "Yes, Ryan?" Trisk said warmly.
"George Washington," Ryan said quietly
"Very good! Washington was indeed the first president!" Trisk said approvingly.
The other dragons looked at him in surprise for a moment, then went back to listening as Trisk described some of the events that lead up to the formation of the USA. "So, who can tell me what year the thirteen colonies declared independence?"
The others made various wrong guesses and Ryan looked at them in confusion. Why did they not know this? It was so very easy! HE lifted his teal and she called on him. "1776. July 4, 1776."
"And you had the month and day as well! Very good, Ryan!"
The other dragons looked at him again and Jarius narrowed his eyes a little. Great, Ryan sighed, here it comes.
"Who can name the document that is the basis for US law?"
Again, bad guesses and Ryan sighed. "The Constitution," he said after she called on him.
"Can you name three of the signers?"
Ryan frowned for a moment; that was not quite as easy. "George Washington, James Madison, and Benjamin Franklin?"
"Excellent, Ryan!" she beamed and he felt himself thrum under her praise. The others looked at him with wide eyes.
"Who can tell me what happened in 1812?"
All of the dragons instantly looked at Ryan and he shrugged with a lift of his wings. "We declared war on Britain."
"But I thought the USA won the war!" Phineas said.
"Yes, the Revolutionary War. But we were upset that the British were taking our ships and something to do with the French Emperor I think. The British burned down the capitol, I think, along with the White House. I do not know so very much about it."
"What was his name, Ryan?" Trisk asked, smiling.
"Napoleon Bonaparte."
"Can you tell me the war that was fought while Lincoln was president?" Trisk asked.
Ryan blinked. "The Civil War."
"Can you name three battlefields?"
Ryan cocked his head and closed his eyes. "Antietam, Gettysburg, and Bull Run?"
"Good! Can you name what Lincoln said at Gettysburg?"
He shook his head. "No, Lady, I do not know all of it."
"Part of it then?"
"Was not that where he said a government by the people, of the people, and for the people?"
She beamed. "Very, very good Ryan! What were the last states added to the union?"
"Alaska and Hawaii."
"Wonderful, Ryan!" she looked at the other dragons who were looking at him with astonishment. Ryan ducked his head and she came over to him and patted him on the head. "Do you know why I did this, Ryan?"
"No, Lady."
She smiled at the group. "Ryan was not raised by dragons, but by humans. That is why he did not know how to address you."
"Humans?" they all chorused.
"Yes! But that does not make him less or not as smart as us, does it?"
They looked at each other and Rose shook her head. "No, he knew all the answers to those questions and we did not."
"Ryan has been raised differently, so it is not fair to expect him to understand everything about dragons and our ways," she said and they all nodded vigorously. Ryan ducked his head, still feeling embraced though Trisk was being very kind about it. He smiled at the other students shyly, and they smiled back, eyes still bright with curiosity about him. "Alright, now that we have that out of the way, I will assign US Government homework to you all, and yes that includes you Ryan though I doubt you will have much trouble with it." There were groans as she pulled out packets of paper. "These are due next week."
"Yes, Lady," they said, groaning.
She smiled at Ryan. "Do you know your alphabet?"
"Of course" Ryan said indignantly.
"I mean the draconic one, not the Latin."
"Oh! No, I do not. Tanner taught me a little draconic but I do not know so very much."
"That is fine, Ryan!" she said. "We will go over it together then."
The other students grumbled a little about it, Jarius mumbling that they had gone over it many times and they usually discussed it in draconic, making Ryan ashamed for his lack. Trisk called Jarius over and the dragon went to her, literally crawling. Trisk sighed. "What did I just tell you?"
'That he was not raised with us."
"And?"
Jarius fidgeted. "That we should not expect him to know all that we know."
"And what did you just do?"
He looked down. "Said that we already knew the alphabet and draconic."
"And how do you think that made him feel?"
"Bad."
"You need to control your tongue, Jarius. A dragon with no control over his words is little better than an animal."
"Yes, Lady," Jarius mumbled ands he patted him on the head. He lifted it, looking relieved. "Go join the others."
Ryan watched all of this with misgiving. Usually, if someone got punished because they did something to him, they would seek revenge for it and he really didn't want to start things that way. He watched as Jarius rejoined the group, trying to gage his reaction, but he looked happy enough. Jarius caught his eyes and made a soft chuffing sound which Ryan returned. Jarius' ears came up and Ryan instantly felt better.
They went over the draconic alphabet, which Ryan found to be fascinating. It was created in such a way that you could write it with the tips of two talons and could easily represent all the sounds of the draconic language. Ryan was so engrossed that he didn't even notice Tanner slipping out.
"Alright, time for something else," Trisk announced and Ryan nearly whined about it being over. He was having so much fun! He looked up to see what Tanner was doing and froze when he realized that Tanner had left.
"Ryan, what is so very wrong?" Karsos asked.
"Tanner has gone!"
Karsos blinked. "Oh. Well I am certain he will be back."
Ryan tried to keep from trembling and Rose came over to him and rubbed her nose along his flank, causing him to start. "There is no need to worry. I am so very certain that he is well and will be back for you when class is over."
Ryan swallowed nervously. "You are probably right."
"Of course she is!" Jarius burst out, "Your father will be back for you!"
Ryan shook his head. "He is not my father."
"Oh?" Jarius said, looking confused.
"Come on your little wretches!" Trisk called and they all bounded over to her, giggling, Ryan's fear at Tanners disappearance forgotten for the moment.
They spent the remainder of the class learning about the bones in a dragon's wing and Ryan was again so engrossed that he didn't notice Tanner slipping back into the room. Trisk finally drew the class to a close and Ryan found himself not wanting it to end. Him liking school? He could hardly credit the notion!
But then he was a dragon, learning about dragons, from dragons, and that was one of the best things that had ever happened to him.
He started when Tanner came up behind him and asked if he had enjoyed himself.
"Where did you go?" Ryan demanded.
"Oh, I had something I needed to check on. I figured you would be so busy that you wouldn't even notice I was gone."
Ryan sniffed. "I did."
"And you were just fine," Tanner said soothingly.
"I told him you would come back," Rose said, looking shy.
"And you were absolutely right, little Lady," Tanner said, smiling down at her. Rose ducked her head and he turned back to Ryan. "Are you ready?" Ryan nodded and rubbed his cheek along Tanner's arm, marking him. Tanner laughed. "Careful, you!"
"Sorry, Tanner."
"No need to be! You just have to be careful as sometimes it can leave a stain."
"I have something that will remove most of them," Trisk said. "They figured out that young dragons produce a slightly different scent oil than adults do; it's easier to remove."
"Really? Interesting! Do you have any by chance?"
"Certainly!" she said, and went to a cabinet and pulled out a small bottle. She handed it to Tanner. "You will only need a little."
"Thank you!"
"You are most welcome. Without it I would spend countless hours trying to keep this place clean and confusion free."
"I can certainly believe that."
Ryan gently pawed at Tanner's leg. "I am getting hungry."
"Well, we certainly can't have a hungry dragon on our hands now can we?"
Ryan shook his head. "Please?"
Tanner laughed. "Aright. Come along, Ryan."
As they left the classroom, Ryan turned to wave which caused some confusion until Trisk told them to wave back. Ryan followed Tanner, chattering excitedly about all that he had learned and how much fun he had, and that he really couldn't wait to go back and learn some more!
"I even learned part of the draconic alphabet!" Ryan said proudly.
"Wonderful! I know some of it; it was not easy to learn."
"I did not find it so very hard," Ryan said, cocking his head.
"Yes, well, you're a dragon too!"
They walked into a small dining room and into the kitchen. The cook on duty looked up, a female of sleek lines and fascinating proportions that made Ryan stare rather rudely. "What can I help you with, my prince?" she asked, smiling at him.
"The prince would like something to eat and I'm feeling a bit peckish myself, actually," Tanner said after Ryan hesitated a bit too long.
"Well, we certainly cannot have the prince going hungry!" she said, laughing. Ryan shook his head and mumbled something indistinct. "What would you like, my prince?"
"Ah," Ryan said. "I think that I would like a sandwich."
"Certainly! What kind?"
"Roast beef?" Ryan asked hopefully.
"I can do that. RC with it?"
"Please?" Ryan said, smiling shyly at her.
She smiled in return. "And you, fine sir?"
"Well, not sure of how fine I am, but I'll have the same thing the prince is having," Tanner said with a chuckle.
"Very good! Go seat yourselves and take a load off while I make it."
Tanner and Ryan went to their seats, Ryan nearly running into the door post as he looked back at the dragoness. "Watch where you're going, Ryan," Tanner said, grabbing him.
"Sorry, Tanner."
They sat down and Tanner grinned at him. "Attractive, isn't she?"
Ryan looked startled. "What?"
"The dragoness. She was rather nice looking."
"Yes," Ryan mumbled, his ears growing hot.
Tanner laughed and Ryan glared t him. "Sorry, Ryan. We were all young once."
Ryan snorted and tried, rather unconvincingly, to look unconcerned. Tanner chuckled as they waited for the dragoness to return with their food. She brought both of the plates and then sat down herself with a bright smile for Ryan. Ryan smiled back, his eyes rather far away. She laughed and patted him on the head. "Enjoy your sandwich, my prince," she said and walked back into the kitchen.
Ryan flinched back, startled, and watched with even wider eyes and she left. "She patted me on the head?"
Tanner grinned. "Why yes, I believe that she did."
Ryan snorted, shaking himself, and started to eat, occasionally looking at the kitchen door.
"Four!" Sulvius cried, as the ball careened through the trees, bouncing off several of them before landing deep in the rough. "Well, that was just a lovely shot!" he said sourly.
"Rather!" Kheros said, his voice deep even in his human form. "I think that was even better than your last one."
"Easy for you to say; you weren't the fish who's house was destroyed," Allen remarked.
Sulvius glared at the both of them. "I'm a little off my game."
Kheros looked at Allen. "Does a little mean several miles?"
"Not that I'm aware of."
"Ah. Then he is wrong."
Sulvius sighed. "I didn't have to come out here to play, you know."
"Yes, but you knew you would not be able to resist the challenge and the futile attempt of actually beating me," Kheros said cheerfully.
"All to true. A dragon's pride!" Sulvius said, shaking his head.
They made it to the green, finally, and all putted in. Sulvius was only behind by six strokes, which Kheros confided to Allen, was very good for him. Sulvius' golf game, or lack thereof, was the amusement of many dragons and dragon friends.
They walked to the next tee in the bright sunshine. The drone of a prop plane burred overhead and birds sang and chittered in the trees. Hardly any wind blew, making it an absolutely wonderful day for golf. The course was particularly nice, much better than the municipal golf courses Allen was used to playing on. The course was private, owned by a dragon, and thus very popular with dragonkind. The human public at large was also allowed, so long as they paid their dues.
"Do you ever play in your other form?" Allen asked.
"Why, do you think it would make his game worse?" Kheros asked.
Sulvius glared at him. "No. Golf and bipedal form do not mix."
"The wings and tail tend to get in the way and some breeds cannot even hold the club easily or turn correctly," Kheros added.
"Ah," Allen said, "just curious."
They teed off and started down the fairway to the balls, Sulvius actually staying in the fairway much to everyones amazement. Sulvius glanced over at Kheros and nodded slightly.
"So, what do you think of us so far?" Sulvius asked.
Allen looked over at them. "You two seem fine to me. Can't say much for your golf game, mind you."
"Ugh! If it's not dragons it dragon friends!" Sulvius said, shaking his head. "I'm glad you're getting to know us better, however."
"What do you think of dragons in general?" Kheros asked.
Allen shrugged a little uncomfortable. "They're okay so far, except the ones that want to hurt Ryan."
"Glad to hear it! I have always thought that dragons were rather spectacular myself," Kheros sad, flexing his considerable biceps. Allen laughed while Sulvius rolled his eyes.
"Vanity, thy name is dragon!" Sulvius said.
They were silent for a short ways when Allen finally said. "If you a re asking me if I'm going to interfere with whatever it is you having going on with the council, the answer is that it's up to Ryan. I will not be a party to anything Ryan doesn't want to do.
"Nobel of you," Kheros commented. "But what happens if Ryan doesn't want something that would be for the good of all dragonkind?"
"It's still up to him."
"You would not try to convince him?"
"If you think you're going to get me to manipulate my son you can forget it!" Allen snarled and started to walk away.
Sulvius jogged over to him. "No, we aren't Allen. I'm sorry, Kheros tends to be a bit bold when he speaks; it's a characteristic of his breed. He's just trying to figure out what you would and would not support so he can better gauge how to protect Ryan."
"Protect?"
"Kheros would like to become his guardian, as we have mentioned."
Allen looked over at Kheros, who was standing by their golf bags. "Ryan is scared of him."
"He knows, and he's working to become less threatening to Ryan. They've talked a few times and it seems Ryan is adjusting to him. Kheros figures it may make Ryan feel more safe if someone even he finds intimidating is protecting him."
"You want me to try to convince Ryan to have him?"
Sulvius shook his head. "No. That would be up to Ryan, as you say. If you want to speak with the prince about it, that's fine however. I can say that there are few as good and none better at security than Kheros."
Allen grunted. "I'll think about it."
"As far as Ryan not wanting something that would benefit all dragonkind..." Sulvius paused and sighed. "All I can do is remind you that Ryan is a dragon and what's good for dragons would be good for him as well."
"Even if it makes him unhappy?" Allen demanded.
"If it meant the evil ones would take over the council, then yes, certainly," Sulvius said quietly. "If the evil ones take over, Ryan's life expectancy is going to be very, very short. Not only that, humans would most likely soon find themselves under draconic dominion."
"Humans wouldn't go down as easily as that!" Allen said, angrily.
"Easier than you know. Dragons are well connected in most human governments. It would be fairly tribal to set humans fighting and squabbling amongst themselves especially as you have the tendency to do so already. As far as a fight, a full grown dragon is more than a match for a human, even a human army if the dragon is armored."
"I can't see a dragon taking out a tank or a jet fighter!"
"Tanks are easy. You just boil or poison the occupants or flip the thing over. Aircraft are more difficult, but it is doable. Consider that dragons also have access to such weaponry and have pilots as well."
"And guns?"
"We can use them and have armor for all of our forms."
"You sound like you have all this planned out."
Sulvius sighed. "Only a great fool lets things go to chance. Even those of us who like humans realize that you are a very self destructive species. It is to our benefit, and frankly to yours as well, that we are in a position to stop a war or take over the world before a war broke out that would decimate the planet."
"I can see you point," Allen said reluctantly.
Sulvius smiled. "No one is going to ask you to do anything that would violate yours or Ryan's conscience, Allen. All we really want to know is that you're firmly behind the boy and that you don't harbor any ill feelings towards dragonkind."
Allen shrugged. "Ryan can be a handful at times, but I do love him very much. He is my son. As far a dragons, I cannot pretend that I can let go a lifetime of wariness overnight, nor can as say as though I like all of you or wholly approve."
"So long as you don't throw the baby out with the bathwater."
"I'll do my best.'
"Good. Now by any chance did you see where my ball landed?"
Ryan awoke early the next day, even pawing at his parents door in his eagerness to go to class, much to his parents amusement. "This is the same little dragon I had to threaten to go to school?" he mother said.
"This is so very different, mother! They are dragons and they do not make fun of me for not knowing things and being so very different from them! And I am learning to be a dragon!" he paused, "Well, I am learning about dragons; I have always been one."
"Very good, Ryan," she said as she served him his breakfast. They had offered to make the prince breakfast but she refused. It was one thing, at least, she could do for him. She figured it was also a good way to remind them that she was his mother.
Ryan finished his breakfast and nearly bounded over to the door, looking back over his shoulder impatiently. "Come on, mother!"
She laughed. "I don't know if I'll ever get used to this!"
She had to tell him to slow down several times on the way to the classroom. Ryan muttered impatiently, but slowed down for her. "You have four legs, I only have two!"
"I know, I just wish to get there!"
"I know, I know!" she said, shaking her head and laughing at him.
They arrived at the school room and Ryan bounded throughout he door, squealing with delight at the sight of his classmates. They all fell to wrestling around with each other, even Rose the little female. Beth watched them nervously for a moment and Trisk waved her over. "They are just playing," she said, smiling at her."
"I know, it's just a little odd to see him so enthusiastic like this."
She cocked her head. "You approve?" she asked quizzically.
"Of course! I want him to have fun and be around dragons his own age, and to learn more of course."
"Very good. He has adapted rather well. He was a bit nervous yesterday, but as you can see he's shed that for the time being."
"You think he'll become nervous and shy again?"
"Most likely. You wouldn't expect him to become bold as brass overnight would you? There will be a period of adjustment for him, but I think he'll be fine."
"I hope so. I've feared for some time that we may have damaged him by not knowing how to raise him properly."
She shook her head. "I'm sure it had an effect, but I would hardly say that he's damaged. He's a bright young dragon and I would say more than capable of learning dragon society and joining it fully should he decide to."
"Fully?" Beth asked nervously.
"Well, yes, if he wishes to live amongst dragons fully and not return to human society, that would be his choice would it not?"
Beth watched as Ryan tussled with a larger male. "It would. But would there be any room for us?"
"Of course!" Trisk said, looking astonished by the question. "What kind of person would keep a youngling from their parents?"
Beth smiled gratefully. "Thank you."
"You are most welcome. Just remember that Ryan is the prince and that his word carries a great deal of weight. I cannot see him allowing you to be put away."
Beth nodded. "You're right. I suppose I shouldn't worry about it so," she said, watching her son play. "Well, I should probably say goodbye to him and go find something useful to do."
"Raising a young dragon, especially him, is more than useful," Trisk said softly.
"Thanks! I mean that he's currently busy playing and hardly needs me."
"He will always need you. What did you do when he was in human school?"
"Took care of the house, made dinner, read, it varied," she said, shrugging.
"We have a library here. Would you like me to get someone to take you to it?"
"Really? I would be allowed to take books out?" Beth asked a little nervous.
Trisk laughed. "Of course! That's what a library is for!" She went over to her phone to call someone.
Beth walked over to the tumult that was five youngling dragons playing and waited for Ryan to notice her. He looked up and chirped happily, skidding to halt right in front of her. "I am having fun, mother!"
"I can see that!" she said, bending down a little to pet him, amazed at how big he seemed in his full form. He thrummed and nudged her hard enough that it nearly knocked her backwards. "Careful! You're stronger and heavier in that form!"
"Sorry, mother," he said, and nuzzled her more carefully.
"I need to go; will you be okay without me?"
Ryan nodded. "They are my friends. Trisk is my friend. I will be safe here," he said and paused. "You will be back for me?"
"Myself, your father, Tanner, or Sulvius."
HE nuzzled her again. "Thank you, mother!"
She looked up to see the four young dragons lined up, looking up at her curiously. They sat back on their haunches a few feet behind Ryan, cocking their heads as dragons seemed wont to do. "Well, hello!" she said warmly, biting back her nervousness.
"You are Ryan's mother?" Rose asked.
"Yes I am," she replied. "And what's your name?"
"I am Rose," she said shyly.
"A very pretty name for a very pretty dragon!" she said and Rose ducked her head. Beth wondered if it were possible that some dragons truly were shy.
"My name is Jarius!" the red colored male said, rearing back and flaring out his wings.
Beth took a step back in mock fright. "And a very ferocious dragon you are!" she said, having done the same thing to Ryan since he shifted forms. Jarius growled loudly and preened at the compliment.
Phineas glared at him. "I am Phineas."
"A pleasure to meet such a fine young dragon!"
Karsos nodded. "I am Karsos."
"Are those horns I see growing?" she said in amazement.
Karsos ducked his head. "Yes, Lady."
"I'm sure they'll be as big and impressive as Kheros' some day."
Karsos looked up, blinking. "Really? You think so?"
"Yes I do!"
Karsos preened under her gaze and Ryan looked at them all, puffing out his chest in pride. "She is my mother!"
"I think she is so very nice," Rose said and then looked abashed at having said anything.
"How did she have you?" Jarius asked.
"What?" Ryan said, looking puzzled.
"How did she lay your egg? She is human," he said, looking at Beth and she actually blushed.
Ryan ducked his head. "She did not; I was fostered."
"Oh!" Jarius said. "So you do have dragon parents!"
Trisk stepped in. "Of course he does, Jarius, don't be silly. Now lets get to work, shall we?" she said, gesturing towards the mats and the four scrambled over to them. Ryan hesitated, then rubbed his cheek along his mother's leg, marking her in a gesture that she knew meant he wanted reassurance. She scratched him firmly behind the ears.
"Your'e just fine, Ryan."
"Yes, mother."
"Don't let it fluster you, Ryan," Trisk said. "I expected they would ask questions sooner or later, and you don't have tell them anything until you are ready, if you ever are ready. Just tell them it is a private matter and they should respect it. If they do not, tell me."
"Yes, Lady."
"Alright, Ryan," Beth said, kissing him on the forehead. "There's the dragon to take me to the library. I'll come to get you when class is over, or one of the others. Maybe I'll stop it and see how you're doing sometime during the day."
"That would be so very nice," Ryan said, ears perked. He marked her once more and then joined the others. Beth looked at Trisk and she smiled reassuringly.
"He's fine."
Beth nodded. "I trust your judgement."
Trisk laid a hand on her shoulder. "You have nothing to worry about; he will be a fine dragon when he grows up."
Beth smiled, a little unnerved at having another dragon lay a hand on her, despite Trisk's friendly demeanor and forward ears. "Thank you again"
Trisk chuckled. "You are welcome."
The students learned, played, and in general had fun for most of the day until Trisk called them all together. "Something has come up and I must attend to it. I am going to allow you outside in the field to play." This generated a great deal of excitement until she raised her hand. "No flying!"
"Aw!" Jarius said.
"If Kheros allows it you may glide for a bit, but your wings are young and still developing so you need to work them slowly."
"Yes, Lady," Jarius said, disappointed.
"Kheros?" Ryan asked nervously.
"Yes. He watches over the class sometimes when I have to be someplace else. It is a nice day so he offered to take overtone outside to play."
"Kheros is my uncle!" Karsos said proudly.
"We know!" Jarius said and Karsos rumbled at him, earning him a smack on the nose from Trisk.
"Stop that! Now line up so I can lead you out. Single file, no stepping on tails."
They all lined up eagerly, Ryan feeling a little edgy about Kheros. She lead them down a long hall until they got to the door that lead outside. She turned to address them. "Remember to follow exactly what Kheros tells you and to stay in bounds."
"Yes Lady!" they all said in unison, nearly bouncing in excitement.
She opened the door and they all piled out into the field. Kheros stood a short distance away in his bipedal form. He smiled at the group and Karsos bounded over to him. "Uncle Kheros!"
"Hello, Karsos! Remember that it is just Kheros in public, however," Kheros said. Karsos looked a little embraced until Kheros patted him on the head, setting him to thrumming.
"You have them?" Trisk called from the door.
"The day I cannot handle five younglings is the day you can put me away!"
"That may come sooner than you think with this lot!"
Kheros grinned. "We will be just fine, Lady."
"Alright!" Trisk said and waved to them as she went back inside. They waved back, all but Ryan being a little unsure about the gesture.
Kheros smiled at them. "So, what do you guys want to do?"
"Fly!" Jarius said, flapping his wings and Kheros laughed.
"No flying! You cannot trick me!"
"Aw!"
"So what else did you wish to do?" Kheros asked.
"We can play tag!" Jarius suggested, in a voice that was not quite a suggestion.
"If that is what the others want, that is fine," Kheros said.
No one seemed to object, so Jarius roared, "I am it!" and started to count, sending them squealing in all different directions. Ryan hung back a little as they all ran off. He approached Kheros who looked down at him with a smile.
"Yes, Ryan?"
"You are not going to tell them I am the prince?" he asked, looking worried.
"Not unless you wish me to."
"No, please do not. They are fine with me as just Ryan."
"Wise of you!" Kheros said and Ryan felt good at the compliment.
"Why do they not recognize me?"
"Well, for one they do not know your colors. For two, you look like you are of their breed as far as Jarius and Phineas are concerned. The others see you of that breed as well. Only someone who is very familiar with dragons would be able to tell the differences."
"Oh!" Ryan said.
"Better run, Ryan!" Karsos shouted and Ryan looked up to see Jarius bearing down on him. He snorted and ran away as fast as he could, leaving Jarius a good distance behind, just sitting there with his eyes wide.
"He is so very fast!" Jarius said in amazement.
"Yeah! Good luck catching him!" Phineas said, causing Jarius to snarl and run after him instead.
Ryan did note that he was quite a bit faster than the others, and Rose in particular. He wondered if that was because she was female or because of her breed. He also noticed that his wings seemed better developed. He cataloged several other differences: the way his throat was shaped, his cheekbones and eye ridges were a little different, his talons seemed longer, and in general he seemed more lean and flexible. He mentally noted to ask Tanner about them later.
He did ask Kheros about Rose when he was far off enough not to be caught. "It is her breed," he said, "if anything, females are usually faster. If you will look, you will notice that her legs are quite a bit shorter along with her muzzle. She is the same breed as Athena; they are somehow related if I remember right."
"I was just curious."
'That is fine, Ryan, just do not say things in front of others that may make her feel self conscious. You know how that can be."
Ryan nodded. "Yes, Kheros," he said, and then roared in surprise as Rose tagged him.
"And no tag backs!" she called, running away as fast as she was able.
Kheros laughed and Ryan glared at him before bounding off to tag someone else. They played for quite some time until they finally grew bored with the game. "Let us play something else," Rose said.
"Like what?" Karsos asked.
"We could play buffet ball," Jarius said, again in that tone that made it not really a suggestion.
Karsos shook his head. "We played that inside. I would rather do something else."
"What would you like, Ryan?" Rose asked.
Ryan shrugged, a slight lift of his wings. "I know not what dragons play."
"What did you do in your human school?"
"Walked around and talked with my friends most of the time. Sometimes we would just imagine things."
"Imagine?" she asked, cocking her head.
"Well, yeah, playing make believe," Ryan said, feeling a little embarrassed all the sudden.
"Oh! We do that too!" Phineas said and then glared at Jarius. "He usually gets to be the hero!"
"Not always!"
"Always!" Phineas said, lashing his tail.
Ryan stepped between the two of them. "Are you two brothers?"
"Yes," Phineas said. "How did you know?"
"Oh, lucky guess," Ryan said.
"So what shall we play?" Rose asked.
Karsos yawned. "We could play like we were in the war."
Jarius nodded. "Okay! I get to be one of the leaders!"
"You always get to be a leader," Karsos said.
"You get to be on the evil side this time, Jarius," Kheros said, coming over.
"But I do not like to loose!"
"And that is so very good for you? You need to learn to loose gracefully, Jarius," Kheros said.
"Yes sir," he said, a little sullenly.
They all picked out what they wanted to be and set off to maim, crush, and destroy each other before dinner. Titanic battles were fought, Rose saved countless times (much to her irritation, pointing out that dragonesses fought in the war too and won battles!) and everyone was having a grand time until Kheros shifted to his full form and let loose a roar, blundering in. "Alright runts! Time for you all to die!"
They squealed and ran away no matter what side they were on. Kheros bounded after them and Ryan knew he was not going as fast as he could. Ryan stopped and threw himself at him and Kheros smoothly evaded, swatting him on the rump as he flew past. "You will pay for that!" Ryan roared.
Kheros grinned. "Oh? From you?"
Ryan snorted his contempt, eyes twinkling, and Kheros jumped on him, folding him up. Ryan squeaked in pain and Kheros relaxed his grip. "Sorry, my prince," he whispered.
"Wings are still a little sore," Ryan said and then kicked, trying to get away.
Kheros laughed and pulled him in tighter. "Claws sheathed!" he yelled.
"Sorry!" Ryan said and then ducked away, spinning back, and landing on Kheros' back in a rapid move that left Kheros quite surprised.
"Get him!" Jarius roared and ally he others jumped on Kheros' back too, even little Rose who was biting and snarling horribly.
"Careful!" Kheros said as he swatted them away to their laughter.
"I do not think I can get through your armor!" Rose said.
"Probably not, but be careful anyway!" Kheros said, and grabbed her, mock biting at her belly. She squealed and tried to bite his nose but he simply held her down.
"No fair!"
"There were rules?"
"You are bigger!" she said, squirming.
"Why yes, I am! But you attacked me!" Kheros said and suddenly licked her from belly to nose, her roaring in indignation
"NO FAIR!"
"Get him! Rescue Rose!" Jarius commanded and Ryan thought that Jarius liked to command a bit much.
They there themselves at Kheros who easily knocked them about. At one point Phineas got smacked a little hard and was dazed for a few moments. They paused, then threw themselves back at Kheros, yelling for Rose to run.
"How? He has me!" she yelled, and bit at Kheros' claw.
"I know not! Do something!" Phineas said.
"I will save her!" Jarius said boldly.
"Oh? How?" Karsos said, breathing heavily, being heavier built then the others. They wall stood, watching Kheros who grinned back at them, holding Rose down. Ryan was very glad this was only a game; he would not have wanted to face Kheros!
"I have a secret!" Jarius said smugly.
"Oh?" Phineas said.
"Yes!"
"And what is it?" Ryan asked, wondering.
Jarius roared and walked towards Kheros. "Let her go or else!"
"Or else what?" Kheros asked pleasantly as he shifted Rose to his other fore claw. She had more or less given up on being rescued and was laying there patiently, waiting to see who would get clobbered next.
Jarius looked self important, which really wasn't that unusual Ryan thought. He reared back on his hind legs again. "I am one of the royal family! Let her go or I will trill!"
Ryan started and then looked closely at Jarius, stunned. They said that he was the last of them! He looked at Phineas closely. They were similar, but he was still different from him. He shook his head. "He is not royal."
Phineas snorted. "We are playing, remember?"
"Oh!" Ryan said, relived.
Jarius made a very horrid imitation of the trill, causing Ryan to wince. Evidently his breed really was the only one that could trill properly. The only thing Jarius sorry excuse for a trill would do is get him smashed so if only to shut him up.
Kheros glanced at Ryan and then set Rose down, grabbing at his ears. "Stop it!"
Jarius trilled again and Kheros trashed around in mock agony while Rose ran back to the others. "Alight! You win!" Kheros said, and Jarius stopped trilling much to Ryan's relief.
"Okay younglings; it is time to head back inside," Kheros announced.
They all trudged back inside, actually feeling a little tired but not admitting it of course. As they walked inside Ryan hung back with Kheros and looked up at him nervously. Kheros just smiled. "It is a dream many little dragons have."
Ryan shuddered. "I see."
"Do not let it worry you."
Ryan sighed, uncomfortable. Hero worship. Great!
They returned to the classroom to find Tanner, Beth, and Trisk all standing around her desk, drinking coffee, talking to each other. Trisk perked her ears. "Well if it is not my wayward students!"
Jarius bounded forward. "I rescued Rose!"
"Really?" Trisk said, smiling.
"Yes! Kheros had capture dyer but I trilled and forced him to let her go!" Jarius said proudly, chest puffed out.
"Well that was very impressive," Trisk said, glancing at Kheros who shook his head slightly.
Jarius preened and Phineas smacked him. "Stop that!"
"Both of you stop," Trisk said.
Jarius growled at his brother. "Make me!"
"Or what, you will trill?" Phineas sneered.
Jarius pounced on him and Phineas howled a real cry of pain as Jarius bit down too hard on his haunch.
Before Ryan knew what he was doing he trilled sharply at the two of them, a short little blast. The two instantly stopped, stunned for a moment. The other dragons looked surprised, but seemed otherwise unaffected. Jarius and Phineas shook their heads and looked around. "What happened?" Phineas said, confused.
Rose was staring at Ryan, wide eyed. "You trilled!"
Jarius thrust out his chest. "No! That was me!"
Karsos smacked him on the back of the head. "No, you idiot! Ryan really trilled!"
Ryan scrambled over to Tanner and his mother, looking frightened. He ducked behind Tanner and Tanner reached down to stroke his neck. "Easy, Ryan."
Rose continued to stare. "You are the prince!"
Trisk nodded. "Yes, he is."
All of the young dragons looked at each other nervously, and then back at Trisk. Ryan ducked his head and Tanner gently lifted it. "No, Ryan, do not hide," he said softly.
Rose tentatively lowered her head to him and dropped low in homage and the other students did the same. Ryan looked at Trisk in dismay as he too bowed, along with Kheros. She looked up and smiled and Ryan shook his head. "No! I do not want any of this!"
"It is your birthright, Ryan; there is no shame in it," Trisk said.
The young dragons stood and now looked at Ryan with a mix of curiosity and maybe a little fear. Ryan leaned his head against Tanner who pet him. Jarius looked at Tanner. "Why is he leaning against that human?"
Ryan's head snapped up. "His name is Tanner and he is my friend!"
Jarius instantly ducked his head. "I am sorry, my prince."
"No! Please do not call me that!" Ryan said desperately. "Call me Ryan, please!"
"But that would not be proper," Rose said, smiling at him.
"What I say is proper is proper," Ryan declared, trying to sound commanding. "And I say to call me Ryan!"
The students looked at Trisk uncertainly and she smiled. "If that is what he wants."
They nodded and Ryan gave Trisk a grateful look. Tanner stroked his neck and Ryan nudged him with his nose, eyes still not eh students. Rose smiled. "It is an honor to meet you."
"But we met before!"
"But we did not know who you were then."
"I would like things to stay the same. I do not wish to be treated differently."
Rose nodded. "I think that is so very wise."
"Of course it is wise! He is the prince!" Jarius said loudly.
"We are not supposed to call him that!" Phineas said, smacking him and Ryan rumbled at them.
"Stop it, both of you!"
Karsos looked at Ryan. "Are you still my friend?"
Ryan blinked. "Yes, of course."
"Then I am content, be you the prince or any other dragon."
"Thank you," Ryan said softly.
Trisk dismissed the others with a warning not to tell anyone else about Ryan. "Will they listen?" Ryan wondered.
"Oh, I am sure they will, but even if they did not, their parents already know about you," Trisk said.
Ryan sighed. "I guess that is okay then." He looked up at Trisk. "I did not handle that well."
"Why would you think that, Ryan?"
"I should not have trilled and should have accepted them bowing."
"As far as trilling goes, you followed your instincts which was to keep two dragons from fighting. As far as bowing goes, you will learn to accept it in time and handle it gracefully I am sure."
"Why did they fight?" Ryan asked.
"They are brothers, young, and male. That alone is more than enough reason," Trisk said.
"Who is the older?"
"Phineas, Jarius is just the larger of the two, that being part of the reason Phineas can seem spiteful."
"Do dragons ever have twins?"
"Not so very often. Usually two eggs are laid and that is uncommon enough. I am not so very certain there has ever been two dragons in one egg."
"Okay Ryan, lets get back to our rooms," Beth said, petting him.
"Yes mother," Ryan said obediently.
As they got to the door, he turned and looked at Trisk. "Is there class tomorrow?" he asked hopefully.
She shook her head. "Not tomorrow. I still have a few things I must do. We will resume the following day, however."
"I will be allowed back?" he asked, looking up at his mother.
"Of course you will," Beth said warmly. "Now lets go see what your father is up to."
"Yes mother," Ryan said, walking out the door. Beth hesitated and looked at Tanner. "Thank you for comforting him."
"You are most welcome; it was the least I could do," Tanner said, smiling. "And don't think he takes any less comfort from you being there."
Beth smiled. "Thanks."
"You are most welcome, Great Lady."
