"So... What is that all about? What are you doing here?"

He sat in his room together with a humanoid fox standing right in front of him.

Damien lived with his mother in a small flat in the suburbs.

"Why did you teleport us here, how did you know where I live?"

"I didn't, technically, but you did." she answered.

"You read my mind?" he concluded.

She nodded, "I can read the mind of those I touch. And about your first question, I think you've already figured out that the game was much more than that."

"I guess so," he said, "Either that or i'm dreaming and that is all just in my head. Is this... the beta?"

Cathrin nodded, "Exactly, the game was a way to test your skills as tamer, the thousand player of the "elite" got into the next phase."

"Next phase?" he asked.

"We know about your skills, you're good. Now they want to learn what kind of a person you are."

"Who?"

Cathrin sat down on the floor with her legs crossed, "The Sovereigns."

The Sovereigns, he remembered them from the game: godlike beings which rule the digital worlds. Although he never met them he simply brushed them off as ingame lore.

"Why?"

"I don't know, but they have their reasons I guess." she said.

Damien sighed, he had hoped for a bit more information.

"And this next phase?" he asked, "How will that work?"

"Basically," she explained, "Digimon and tamer should get to know each other, so i'm to stay with you for a week. Then in a week the portal will open and we will go to my world."

"Why not now?"

"Skills are not everything. We still need to check if the potential tamers are suitable. The sovereigns feared that otherwise there could get the wrong kind of people in our world."

"Like what kind?"

She thought for a second, "During the game there were some elite players which had good skills, but they used them for the wrong reasons."

Damien understood. She meant those players which chose to play against other, instead of with them. Killer, thief, hacker. Damien knew of some of them, especially one called r4z0r, a player-killer and bandit using his high class fighting skills to hunt down, kill and loot other players.

If those Sovereigns needed help they definitely wouldn't want the help of those guys.

"Allright..." Damien sighed.

"Whats wrong?"

"Just wondering how i'm gonna explain my mother that there's a humanoid, talking fox here to stay for a week."

"I can hide if you want me to." she said, but Damien shook his head.

"No, i'll try explain it to her later. I couldn't even hide it if I screwed up in school, so she will find out anyways. But she's not here right now anyway. And besides, I had enough action for now."

He looked at the clock: 15 pm.

"Are you hungry?" he asked.

"A bit, yes."

"Then," he stood up, "How 'bout... a pizza?"

"What's Pizza, does it taste good?"

Damien thought about how he should explain the taste of pizza to her. But only for a moment, then he decided to simply show her.

He went to the kitchen grabbed to frozen pizzas and turned the oven on. After waiting a few moments he put in the two salami-pizzas.

Just in that moment his phone rang. He grabbed it and checked the screen.

"Kuro?"

He answered the call.

"Dude? Aeto? I know this may sound ridiculous, but... could it be that there's a real live Digimon with you, too?"

"Well... actually yes." Damien answered

"That... is... AWESOME!"

"Kuro do you have more?" a voice in the background said

"Is that...?" Damien asked.

"Yes, that's Pyro." Kuro answered.

Pyro was the name of the Agumon he had ingame.

"He already ate half my noodle supply, still wants more." Kuro complained.

"What did he tell you?"

"A lot of stuff. In short it's that he's here for a week and then we'll go for whatever crazy reason trough a portal into their world. Not much more than that, he is the worst story teller i've seen in years." He said.

"Still, crazy story, don't you think?"

Kuro laughed, "Yeah, haven't believed it at first, but that frikkin dinosaur pinched me to proof that i'm not dreaming. And that frikkin' hurt with those claws."

"So, looks like we gonna meet in a week."

"Can't wait dude, 'til then!"

Damien put the phone aside.

'Why do they need us?' It didn't sound as if Kuro knew more, so now the only he could do was to wait.

There has to be a reason, he thought to himself, they surely wouldn't set up a whole game, produce, make a giant marketing campaign, just to give away a free trip to the Digital World and show some people around. He tried to remember how it was in the anime-series. Nearly every time some mighty digimon brought a bunch of kids into the Digital World to save it, now that he thought about it those kids also were unbelievable lucky. They were set in a scenario that could be life-threatening, fighting against all kinds of evil Digimon, which, if they had been able to kill the kids Digimon, probably would have no problem killing the kid, too.

'So if Digimon a real, what about those Digi-Destined kids?'

A loud peeping noise tore him from his thoughts.

"Fuck, the pizzas!"

He was lucky, they weren't burned. He brought them to his room, where he found Cathrin sitting on his arm chair, looking at some drawings.

Except from gaming, drawing was probably the only thing he was good in and over the years he had drawn a huge collection. Most parts of his walls were covered with paper and he had numerous portfolios filled with them.

"Did you draw those?" Cathrin asked

"Yes."

"You're good..." she sniffed and turned around.

"Pizza is ready." he handed her one of them. She sat down took a slice of it and sniffed on it carefully. She took a bite and a small smile appeared on her face.

"That's delicious."

That evening his mother came back from work. Damien told Cathrin to wait for his sign, he would try to prepare her the best he could.

"Hey mom"

"Hey Dami," she put her jacket away and went to the kitchen, "How was the city? Went everything alright?"

"Well..." actually he nearly forgot that his bike was crashed between to cars. "Mostly... yeah. How was work?"

"Got a new boss today, this morning he started to let everybody know that he's in charge and didn't stop 'til now." she opened the freezer, "He's one special kind of... did you have friends over?"

"What?" he asked surprised?

"Either that or you stuffed two pizzas, so who was here?"

"Well, not actually a friend, but there's..." he started to explain.

"So a girl?" she asked.

"No! Well... basically yes, kinda. But not like that." he stuttered.

"No need to be ashamed, i'm just curious."

"Mom, its not like that, it's... ah goddammit." He sighed "Ok, just promise me not to freak out."

"Oh dear." his mom chuckled.

"Ok, Cathrin you can come."

With that she simply appeared right next to him. Damiens Mother stood there, blinking a few times, staring at the grey Renamon.

"Hello, nice to meet you." Cathrin said, but his mother just said:

"I'm dreaming..."

"No, I thought the same but, no."

His mother sat down at the table. "Alright, let's start at the beginning."

The next hour they tried to explain everything. From the game to the accident and what Cathrin told him. His mother sat there listened and nodded a few times.

Then finally: "So i'm not dreaming."

Damien and Cathrin shook their heads.

"Too bad... I already hoped that my new boss was a dream, too." she smiled a bit, "Alright, i'll need a night to think about all that." she stood up and went to her bedroom. "Night Dami."

"Night mom..."

Later he sat with Cathrin back in his room.

"Well... she took it better than I expected." Damien said.

"I shouldn't have phased myself right in there, I'm sorry."

"It's alright." He sighed and threw himself on his bed. "Although, maybe you could use doors more often, teleporting right in front of people could freak them out a bit."

They said nothing for a while, then Cathrin broke the silence.

"Dami? Is that you're real name?" she asked.

"No... It's Damien, Dami's just a short form my mother used since I was young. It's a bit annoying as well, especially in front of others."

"What about you're father?"

Damien said nothing for a moment.

"He... left when I was young. I can't really remember him, though."

Damien pulled out a picture and handed it to Cathrin. It showed a man, a bit older than Damien, shorter hair but there was a certain similarity between them.

"Mom took every picture she could find back then and threw them away, all but this one."

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked. I didn't want to bother you." she said.

Damien smirked.

"No... it's alright. Was a long time ago"

She handed the picture back.

"Why did you keep it?" she asked.

"I don't know... he left us, but... He is still my father, I guess I just don't want to forget how he looked like."

Damien looked at the picture for a moment.

"And what about you? Your family?" He asked.

"Not a really happy story as well. My father died even before I was born. Yet i'm proud of him. He died a hero's death, protecting the weak. My mother died the night I was born. I never met them, lived with my Grandfather ever since." she sighed, "But... sorry I didn't want to bother you with my..."

"You haven't," he said, "I guess that's what this is all about. Getting to know each other and stuff."

Cathrin nodded, "Yes, guess you're right."

After a while Cathrin smiled, "Damien?"

"Yes?"

"That's a nice name. It fits you, better than Aeto."

"Thanks." he had to smile, "Cathrin is a nice name, too."

"Wake up!"

He felt a sharp pain in his side, woke up instantly. He looked up to see the two security guys, the one just putting away his nightstick.

"He didn't even touch his meal." the other one said.

"Would you touch that? My dog eats better food." The first one kicked the tray, the greyish stuff splattered over the ground.

"Who cares, the docs will make sure he'll live." both flanked Damien, picking him up and dragging him trough the hallways.

They opened the door, placing him on the chair.

"Nice to see you again, Damien." Autumns moved into his field of view, "Ready for another round?"
