Lizana's father raised his arm up, the one on her side of the field. "Zorua is unable to battle! Mothim wins."

She frowned and sniffled a bit, calling Zorua back to his pokeball. "Good job Zorua. You fought well." She tossed out her other pokeball. "He's weakened...let's take care of him Houndoom."

Houndoom appeared, looking quite menacing compared to earlier. He gave a howl and took an offensive stance, ready to attack.

Mothim flew hard at Houndoom, getting closer as Lizana grinned. "Wait for it...now! Dodge and use Bite."

The judge raised his arm, this time the one on Vael's side of the field. "Mothim is unable to battle. Houndoom wins."

Lizana's father once again laughed. "You mean you don't know! Listen son...if it's one thing this region is known for, other than the constant windy days, it's our mining production. This region is rich in every gem you can imagine. We are the leading shipper of ore across the entire world. As a result, each city that has a gym is responsible for a different type of gem and because we're so rich in ore...each gym's badge is a small refined version of that gem, hardly anything as grand as we dig up. So we call these little gem badges cores. Each time you win at a gym, you'll be given one of these cores. We harvest obsidian around these parts and so our gym badge is obsidian, known as the Dark Core.

"Wow...that's so cool!" Vael pulled out his badge case and opened it, seeing the same cloth protecting eight small slots. "No wonder the badge slots look like nothing more than holes. It's for the gems...or cores to fit."

Lizana took the Dark Core out of its jewelry box and took the liberty of sliding it into the matching slot in Vael's badge case. "Congratulations!"

Alyssa tugged on Vael's arms. "I hate to cut this award ceremony short, but we really have to go if we're going to make it in time."

Vael nodded and closed his badge case, stowing it securely once more in his bag. "You're right. I'm sorry."

Lizana blinked. "Whoa what's the rush?"

Alyssa smiled. "We are heading to Sunnyside so I can compete in the tournament there."

"Really!? Well there's no need to rush then. I'll give you a ride in my personal hovercraft. We'll leave first thing in the morning and get there with plenty of time left. I go there every time it's held."

Vael smiled. "Really? What could go wrong? I'm from an area where Pokémon run wild all the time. They seem very friendly and free. They may not approach you, but they'll still say hi if you're nearby."

Lizana tilted her head at him. "You haven't seen city Pokémon have you. Now...generally you're correct, but sometimes a little beef over turf can cause fights."

There was a crash down another alley and Alyssa jumped in surprise. "What was that?"

"Only one way to find out." The gym leader ran towards the alley the sound had come from, Houndoom close behind. Vael and Eevee were right beside her, but Alyssa lagged just a little behind, still caught off guard from the ruckus and dark alleys. Poochyena stayed by her side protectively, not willing to let anything happen to her.

What they saw when they turned the corner made Vael cringe. A Purrloin was wounded after a fall from a trash can. There was a pair of wild Lillipup growling viciously at the Purrloin. It looked as if the cat had been trying to jump from the trash can and over the fence to the other side of the alley but had missed the jump and landed back on the trash can, knocking it over and wounding it in the process.

Lizana and Houndoom both snarled. "Hey ease up you two. There's no need for violence."

Both Lillipups turned their attention on the strangers and growled, but Eevee and Houndoom stepped in front of their trainers, looking like they were ready to fight.

He nodded and took the same aggressive stance Eevee had taken. "It would be my pleasure."

The Lillipups decided to gang up and both charged at the smaller Eevee. "Big mistake. Tackle the first one that gets to you Eevee."

She prepared for the onslaught and managed to ram into the first one, knocking it back, but she was unable to dodge the second one and took a tackle full force from the other one, attempting to push her with his body weight to pin her against the wall.

"Houndoom Bite the one on Eevee."

Listening to her words, he grabbed the scruff of the one trying to pin Eevee and bit down, causing a yelp of pain from the victim and an immediate halt to his advance.

Eevee shook her head to get balance back as Vael called out to her. "Now while he's got it distracted Tackle it Eevee." She charged the beast and Houndoom released his grip on the Pokémon as soon as she was close enough, allowing her to score a direct hit.

"Lizana nodded. "Good...now Ember the other one Eevee hit at first Houndoom." As soon as he exposed his fangs to release the gout of fire, both Lillipups dashed out of the alley and past Alyssa, who had stayed out of the battling range of the other two. Poochyena had stayed in front of her so both Pokémon had to dart around her instead of going through her.

Vael relaxed and approached the Purrloin, who seemed too tired and weak to do anything except growl at him. He was having none of it though and picked the cat up a female by the looks of it. "Come on. We really gotta get to that Pokémon center now."

Lizana nodded and left the alleyway pointing the direction they had been going initially. "It's not far. Let's go!"

"Come on Eevee." Lizana took off at a small jog so the others had no problems keeping up and they arrived at the Pokémon center without any further incident. Vael dashed in and to the counter, carrying the weakened Purrloin. "She's wild, but I think she needs some help. Can you take care of her and our other Pokémon too?" He nodded to Eevee and she jumped onto the cart that the Chansey had brought out, next to the Purrloin he had laid down. He also slid Mothim's pokeball into one of the slots on the cart while Lizana placed Zorua's in one of the other slots. "Look after her will you Eevee. I think she's scared too, but only another Pokémon will be able to help her feel better. I know you can do it."

Eevee nodded to Vael as Nurse Joy and Chansey led the cart to the back. Houndoom walked back with the cart as well.

Alyssa sighed. "Well there's nothing we can do but wait now." She sniffled and snuggled up to Poochyena, who tried to comfort her.

Vael plopped down in a chair and leaned back. "I hate seeing Pokémon hurt or beat up...even abandoned."

Lizana sat down as well. "Pokémon are just like humans when you look at it. There are bad ones and good ones who are just as mean or kind as humans can be.

They sat and waited patiently, until Nurse Joy came out, all the Pokémon looking refreshed...even Purrloin, who was currently scarfing down Pokémon food like there was no tomorrow. She smiled. "Everyone's doing fine. Purrloin was so exhausted from being malnourished. Something must have been preventing her from getting some food. And I'd say that same something has been going on for a while. Where did you find her?"

Vael spoke up first. "She was being bullied by some wild Pokémon and I bet they were chasing her away anytime she got near enough to try to get some food. The bullies...they were trying to kill her slowly." Vael slammed his fist on the table in anger, but Eevee cooed to him. She started nudging the cat's rump towards Vael before jumping down and heading to his side.

Purrloin hesitated for a moment since the food was gone, but then she too jumped down and approached Vael. She purred, rubbing against his legs like a normal cat would, speaking fragmented versions of her name that Vael took to mean as thank you.

He relaxed a bit and leaned down to pet her. "Hey...how about you join me on our journey? I'll keep you fed and you won't have to worry about whether you'll be able to eat today."

Purrloin smiled and nodded, purring again. When Vael took out an empty pokeball and offered it to her, she eagerly touched it, capturing herself without a struggle. He called her out immediately. "Welcome to the family Purrloin." He smiled.

Lizana smiled as well. "How about we make her feel really welcome? I do believe it looked like Eevee promised something to Houndoom after the match. And this time Mothim can play too. The more the merrier."

Lizana and Alyssa both giggled at Vael as he blushed, starting to pet Purrloin. The cat had no idea how lucky she was about to be.
