Demon Hunters, Chapter 3 â€" The Demon of the Gates is Summoned

A few hours had passed since the allosaurus had woken up after being kidnapped. He and Edmund had talked a lot in the meantime. The mist grew dense. With the corner of his eyes, Alexei saw the twin have their throat ripped open by silver daggers. "They are just children" he yelled in his mind, unable to speak a single word.

The blood of the bears ran through the ground, covering the distance between then and the smoke entity. When they were just beneath it, the combined blood raised, covering the smoke being as a red dripping net. The fire flew from the torches and enveloped the smoke entity. When the flames disappeared a tall and thin lizard stood into the circle.

"Succobernoth, my master. Be welcome to the mortal world" Said the bull that kidnapped Alexei, pulling the hood covering his head.

Succobernoth had reddish scales; his tail was long and the tip ended in four big spikes. His back was covered by small ivory spikes. His was sparkleing yellow. His fangs could be seen even with his jaws closed. He had two horns in his head.

Alexei looked at this new demon with a mix of curiosity and terror. Even the non hunter could feel the dark and powerful aura emanating from this particular demon.

The bull stood up and raised his arms into the night air. "You all, raise your paws to greet the great Succobernoth, the Demon of the Gates!"

The crowd erupted in hymns. The demon closed his eyes, smiling, as the chaotic voices were a pleasant thing to his ears. He moved his paw, asking for silence. "Children of night and hatred, I shall give you what you want, a world ruled by demons, were other furs will be less than nothing, and you will have honors granted only to kings and emperors from great kingdoms. Your votes of loyalty gave you a special place next to my kind ruling this realm"

The demon stopped, allowing the furs there to dance and chant in joy and happiness. The demons smiled evilly; sharing power was not their intention. But, for now, the mortal's help would be welcome so they would lie, as they always do to achieve whatever they wanted.

When the crowd had enough time to jubilate the promise, Succobernoth asked to speak again "After enjoying my sacrifices we will celebrate in this night properly. When the moon is full again, we will force the underworld and the middleworld to join in one. Light shall fail when Darkness rise definitely and cover these lands, even God, the one that never does nothing will tremble, cause the highworld won't be able to restrain our power.

His words were enough to put the furs and demon there in a frenetic state. They started to chant a hymn again, speaking about dark and light on the doom of time and a fight were land would crack and light would perish.

"Now, I think I want my meal" said the Demon of the Gates walking towards the dino; licking Alexei's forehead as the dino was unlocked.

Guarding the gates of the old southern mansion, a gryphon with red eyes and two other guards were making sure unauthorized people didn't cross the gates. The gryphon was the only one of them that was a demon. They had been designated to watch over the propriety's entrance while the ritual was happening.

A dark limousine arrived, the guards looked at it in interest, the spectators had arrived a few time ago. The dark windows didn't allow them to look at the passenger inside it; the mix of lion and eagle walked at the driver's window when the long vehicle stopped and the engine was turned off. The window lowered with an electric buzz.

"My master is really sorry by the delay. But we had a non-scheduled problem on the road here" Said the driver, a grey wolf, using a hat that covered most of his face.

"No problems" said the gryphon dryly, bending forward and placing one of his paws on the car's windows. "The ritual is happening at this very moment, but it has just started; as soon you show your invitation you can pass.

"Yes, of course. Just a moment"

The driver curled his body to the passenger seat; the gryphon heard the sound of papers being moved. He exhaled noisily to demonstrate his impatience "You will make sure that the area is secure for our master to cross to this world; this is a honor a honor, Sergey, you should be proud. "It seems that, for now, you have spoken the truth" Said Shaan, sitting at the leather seat. He was looking down.

At the limousine's floor, the light blue dragon was struggling inside a white robe.

"Stop squirming; that is a sacred silk brought from the northern lands. No demon can tear through it" He said, showing no emotion at the statement.

"You pieces of shits, what you still want with me? I've done as we agreed. I told you were to go; we are here, this is the right place, now lemme go" Yelled the demon.

"Oh, we are sure you are eager to warn your fellows that we are about to crash this party; but, that kindness would become a problem, so... you will stay in the car keeping it safe of flies with this bad mood of yours. And, if you brought us to the wrong place, we will be able to force you to take us to the right one"

Mareck gagged the demon to prevent it to yell and drag undesired attention to the limo while they would be trying to find Alexei inside the mansion.

Nurrey drove the car to where other vehicles were parked. Maybe it was because of the silencers, or because they acted quickly at the gate, they hadn't been discovered yet. Nurrey parked the car among the other luxurious vehicles. After killing the engine, the wolf jumped across the small window that divided the driver's part of the limo from where the passengers would sit. Shaan and Mareck were dressing up in long dark red robes that were hidden inside a special compartment underneath the seats.

Before they left Mareck's house, Shaan and Nurrey had grabbed some items from their own car that could come in handy. The vests, made of sacred silk, were one of these items. While the dragon was unconscious, the hunters dressed him with it. Gleon had no other choice other than talk or being killed in the most painful way that Nurrey could think.

The blue demon informed them about the ritual that should occur in that very night. And, after being a little more... stimulated, he gave away where the ritual would be done.

During his brief interrogatory, the dragon also told them that they were at the fringe of the road in which the guests would have to pass. The only thing they had to do was to wait one of these guests and ambush him. At the same time they were dressing, and old and fat rat, along with his wife and the boar, the limo's original driver, were gagged and tied together inside the tall grass, near the place their car had suffered the accident.

Now, the plan was to infiltrate unnoticeably the house and seek their friend. This part would be easy, or so they thought, because the disguises would make them merge with the crowd perfectly, without raising suspicions. Now they thought that it wouldn't be necessary to enter the house. As they left the car, and walked a few steps, they could hear the excited voices coming from behind the great old mansion.

Being extremely careful, the three walked around the big old house. Through the window's glasses they could see the inside ready to a party dignity to a king, food and a luxurious decoration, made of silver and gold.

They walked to the backyard, from where the voices seemed to be coming. The long vests revealed to be useful in more than just one manner; they allowed the hunters to hide their weaponry under the fabric.

Nurrey held his breath, Shaan bit his lip. They had entered the circle formed by the hooded furs, wearing the same clothes they were without being noticed. That had another bigger motive too: everyone's attention was turned to the show occurring inside the circle.

Alexei was there; the allosaurus had been forced to stand by two demons that were holding him in that position while he would have collapsed if he tried to stand for his own. Beside these two holding Alexei, there were four other demon's inside the circle: The bull that had invaded Mareck's house some hours ago, he was still, his arms crossed; a black dragon; a gorilla with white fur and, these last two with their feet over a rhino laid on the floor, keeping him immobile; the final one, was a tall, red and thin lizard.

The lizard leaned forward and pierced his claw on Alexei's belly, licking the blood flowing from the dino's flesh as it emerged the point his claws disappeared among the allosaurus' scales.

Shaan felt the feather, that he had locked at his necklace's chain again, move forward, pulling the chain. The lizard was licking Alexei's blood with a grin on his lips. The hunter was naked, his body covered by deep cuts, his head was hanging limply from one side to another, his body seemed flaccid, but his tail was moving, and his chest was moving, even that slowly, as he breathed.

"Mareck, don't!" muttered Shaan between teeth, making the dolphin lower the weapon he was about to pull out of the cloth.

"How can you bare to be watching your friend being slaughtered in front of your eyes doing nothing to help him?" asked the dolphin with his grave voice, but keeping it low.

"If you shoot, or even draw a weapon here, they will not hesitate for even a second, they will kill Alexei the instant they notice our act"

"What do you suggest, then?"

"Nurrey... the car... be creative, we will need some huge distraction"

The wolf shook his head in agreement and got out of the crowd that was now on a frenetic state. He ran towards the parking area. Dolphin and horse were at the exact same place, Shaan was looking at his friend in the middle of the circle, Mareck was staring at the horse; he didn't understood what the other two had just planned.

"It is going to be quick; they will be confused for a while. Be ready to run and shoot when it is the right time" The dolphin had the impression of having heard a gun being loaded from under the horse's vests.

Gleon had spent the last minutes trying to use his teeth to chew the fabric the hunters had used to gag him; rather the hunter had slipped or not. It wasn't made of the same material than the sacred vest was. He smiled when the cloth was finally torn between his teeth. The limousine's door opened and Nurrey came in rapidly, tossing the mask was using a few moments ago to a corner in the car.

"I do hope you like strong emotions" Said Nurrey, turning on the engines and pressing on the gas pedal.

The silent engine vibrated when it was brought back from his nap. Nurrey spun the wheel, making the car do a wide circle with his front part as it moved backwards. The changed the march, and drove towards the group on the backyard.

Succobernoth had lowered his head to lick some of blood that had accumulated in one of the dino's abs' salience. He stopped.

"Gaur, what is this sound?" His hearing had caught the noise of the car‘s engine coming closer at high speed; the bull hadn't noticed the sound yet, that was a fault from the crowd around them celebrating the dark ceremony. Actually, the bull had troubles even to understand his master's words.

Succobernoth would have spotted the vehicle, but wherever he gazed upon, his eyes just met the furs in dark red robes. He growled thinking that his followers were blocking his vision field.

Shaan smiled, seeing the car approaching in a high speed, the lights off. The equine grabbed three grenades from his belt, removing the security locks of them; He threw them at the other side of the crowd.

"I don't know, my mas..."

The bull jumped to his side when the three grenades exploded simultaneously. Screams filled the night as the mortal followers of the demon were lifted in the air, or tossed apart, by the explosion's power; the smell of burned flesh was unpleasant. The Demon of the Gates roared at the direction the explosions occurred. Two seconds passed, Nurrey pressed the brake pedal and spun the wheel. The long vehicle produced a loud sound as the tires scratched the soil, the rear of the limo described a wide circle, as if it was a compass, sweeping several furs of the crowd that were on the way.

Shaan and Mareck started to shoot at the same time the back of the car came into their sight, hitting several furs with that maneuver. The red demon became disoriented. He raised his paws to block the bullets.

The shield formed. But just after he was previously hit by some of the bullets. Dark blue blood ran out of his injuries that healed at an amazing speed.

"Gaur, what is the meaning of this?" Yelled the demon.

Mareck drew his weapons, making a circular move with both arms stretched, shooting the confused crowd around him. Shaan continued to discharge his guns specifically against the red demon. The demon holding Edmund and Al had ran away, before they could be killed.

"Gaur?" the demon tightened his eyes, they glowed as the demon watched everyone that was suppose to follow him deserting, leaving him alone as they sought out shelter "Shit! Listen my words, hunters, many of you had tried to exterminate us across the ages, none succeeded, and even now, when your weapons have evolved, you can't stand against my kind. We are still here, still alive, still breathing. Your acts are no more than foolish and..."

Shaan felt a strong pull on his neck. The feather flew as an arrow trough his vests, whistling as it covered the distance between the horse and the demonic energy shield in no time.

"Impossible, the four should have fallen many years ago! How did you lay your dirty paws on this?" He yelled.

The invisible shield lighted as the feather glowed, sparks of light jumped in every direction. The plume, slowly, moved a few inches further inside the shield.

"I curse you, your fathers and descendants! Death be slow and cruel to you and to everyone that have offered you shelter or help even once so far"

"Nurrey, your lazy bastard, we would love some help over here" Yelled Shaan.

The wolf jumped out of the car; at his back, a long gun made of dark steel.

"Say ah!" Shouted the wolf, pulling the trigger.

The anti-tank bazooka, that would have made Alexei envious, produced a loud blast as it launched the small rocket made of pure silver, covered in small runes. Nurrey was thrown half a meter back, landing on his ass over the car's window. The gun had been adapted by the dolphin from a version to be used on war helicopters, it was the only thing they managed to recover from his blasted vehicle.

The projectile exploded as it slammed against the demon's shield. But, it didn't made much more than what they have tried until that moment.

Succobernoth growled. "Now you really pissed me off" He roared, tow large wings emerged from his back. The force field around him started to expand.

"Damn" The wolf got up and entered the car, pressing a button on the pannel. The back doors opened opened at the same time. "Quickly, grab Alexei and get into the car" He shouted to the other two that were busy shooting against the demon.

Shaan had lost track of the dino when they started to shoot. The equine moved his blue eyes, seeking his friend in the chaos that had been installed there.

"What?" exclaimed Mareck.

Edmund had his body's muscles contracted as he tried to run the most he could, carrying the heavy weight of the allosaurus on his back. "I will take him to the car" Shouted the rhino with a tired voice due the huge physical effort he was doing.

Shaan and the dolphin nodded with their heads.

"I still have one more grenade left, how many do you have, Mareck?" the ground had started to tremble faintly. The energy shield was perfectly visible, expanding as it pushed the feather back. The more energy the demon liberated, the more his body changed, becoming more and more threatening.

"Five"

"Give me your weapon and be ready. On three"

The dolphin handled him that machine gun he was using. Some demons started to come from the mansion. Running fast towards them.

"Three!"

The horse spun his body, discharging the machine gun, demons falling dead almost instantly as the diminutive spores inside the bullets crept inside their bodies. These insignificant organisms were even more powerful than arsenic, acting quicker than the yeast that Alexei liked to use. None of these newcomers could raise a shield, they couldn't stand a chance. Mareck grabbed the grenade on Shaan's belt and the five from his vest, removing the security pins and throwing them against the Demon of the Gates.

The two ran to the vehicle. As soon as they had entered, Nurrey thrust his foot on the gas; the sudden movement made the doors close violently and made the dolphin trip and fall over the dragon. Gleon was squirming and struggling under the weight of the hunters. Meanwhile, Edmund was trying to keep Alexei still in one of the large seats covered in leather of the limo.

With a final roar, a large amount of earth cracked and sunk, as it had been hit by a huge hammer. The dark feather, that had helped the hunters, burned and vanished. Succobernoth looked around, everything was destroyed; no one was there, just him. He roared again. The grenades exploded.

Nurrey drove at full speed. The few cars on the road were left behind as if they weren't even moving. The dolphin had jumped to the cabin's passenger seat, to give some space to the other ones, he was kneeled over the seat, explaining the best he could the current situation of the allosaurus to a doctor through his cell. They were heading to a hospital, and he wanted to make sure that things would be ready when they arrived.

Gleon was quiet. The dragon was biting his lip, if the hunter had managed to get in time and rescued their friend before he got so much damage, he would have a chance to be free. But, now, the allosaurus was dying at the back seat. If that happened, all the anger his friends would feel would be focused on him.

Shaan had removed his coat and was cutting the leather sleeves to make some improvised bandages to his friend before he died from blood loss. It was a hard task. Succobernoth had done a real nice work in hurting Alexei in the brief time he had to do so. Edmund was shaking at his side, but he was helping to close the injuries even while almost being on shook.

A large laceration started on the dinosaur's shoulder, going all the way long till his torso. At the end of the injury, the flesh was reduced to shreds. At the center, at the center, the shoulder had been dislocated, the white bone, jutting out. A second blow had torn the heavy muscles of the allosaurus' thigh, leaving the pulsation of the femoral artery visible beneath them.

The wolf had to move the car to the parking area, what he tried to do the fastest he could. He didn't want to be away from his friend in a time like that. Once the car was stopped, he ran inside the hospital, but he saw no trace of his friends.

"Where did they take the badly hurt dinosaur?" he asked to one of the nurses working at the hospital administration sector.

A young gazelle typed some digits and informed him that the patient had been taken to the surgery room, and that the room was located at the fifth floor of the building. Nurrey heard nothing else, he ran. At the fifth floor he spotted Ed, Shaan and Mareck. They were all sitting on benches.

"What happened?" asked the wolf, breathing noisily as he slowed down, walking closer to the group.

Shaan sighed deeply before answering "We can't go further from this point. Al is inside that room..."He pointed to a door in which was written EMERGENCY SURGERY ROOM C in large red letters. "The doctors also said that they will be doing their best, but his chances are low"

Nurrey had the feeling that his bones had vanished and the place where they used to be was filled with rubber or some other sort of a similar material. He sat on a chair next to the dolphin. None of them wanted to say anything. Words seemed to be to useless.

A very ashamed nurse walked to Edmund, handling him a white towel from the hospital; was just then that the rhino noticed he was still naked. He got up and, blushing madly, he wrapped the towel around his waist.

"What was that?" asked Edmund when they heard the sound of a huge explosion that made the building tremble; the lights went on and off"

The doors of the emergency room blasted open, and a dense fog filled the room. The medical team was hurled outside. Among screams from the doctors and nurses. Shaan e Nurrey, who were just behind the door, ended up underneath the pile of confused furs. As soon as the last doctor flew out of the room, the door closed on their own, clicking as the locks closed.

Edmund and Mareck jumped to their feet. They ran to help their friends. Nurrey looked at the door, wide-jawed. He, moments later helpes by the other three, started to push the door, trying to open it.

The door moved a few inches inside, yielding against the effort. Suddenly, though, it returned to the previous position, as if a larger force pushed it from the inside. After that, it froze, letting some ice crystals leak from the holes on the side and the bottom.

"Security, he have a breach at the fifth floor perimeter! Someone broke through the emergency room! And bring a battering ram, the door is sealed from the inside" Shouted one doctor in his cell phone.

The hunters were still determined. Alexei needed urgent medical treatment, they didn't even wanted to think in what could be happening inside that room. They just pushed the door, using all the strength they could muster.

The security team arrived within three minutes; that was two minutes more than the usual. They said they were sorry, but the reason to them to take so long was that they were trying to find the battering ram.

"What the hell is going on here?" asked Edmund, forcing the door.

"Some of the demon must have followed us and now he is trying to finish his work"

"Shut your mouth Nurrey, or I will close it for you, just keep continue pushing" Said the dolphin.

The sound of steps echoed over the marble corridor. The security team arrived, they were running, their uniform was dark blue, they were six and they were carrying a long structure made of steel.

"You there at the door, move out of the way" Shouted one of the guys from security. "Ok, men, let's do this"

The hunters jumped aside, giving the team room. When the battering ram collided against the door, there was a loud cracking noise, seconds later the ice was marked like a spider web.

"Come on guys. One more time" Ordered the security team leader.

The team moved back a few steps before trying again. The door seemed to be opening, it moved a few inches inside. But, things changed. The securities were lifted into the air by something they couldn't see, what just scared them even more. After that, they were tossed against the opposite wall. One of the doctors and two nurses ran away, screaming in fear. The ice over the door glowed and fixed itself, becoming solid as nothing had happened to it.

"What the hell is happening here?! Who or what is in that room? And for the love of God Almighty, how could we float?" Shouted one of the securities.

"Damn! This is not going anywhere. Mareck, go to the car, grab any weapon and anything else that can be useful; come back here the quick as your legs allow you to!"

The dolphin had already taken another corridor, running at maximum speed, when one of the securities asked: "Did the wolf said guns?"

"Shaan, try to find any rune that can work against this thing" Said Nurrey, at the same time he was putting his leather gauntlets on.

The horse started to scavenge the pockets of his pants. "I can try, but not even the rune on my paw had any result so far; I strongly doubt any other of the ones I have will work better"

"Just search"

The wolf started to punch the ice sturdily. Each blow opened a huge gap on the ice armor that covered the door; but, before he could apply the second blow, the effects of the previous one had already been fixed.

Mareck crossed the hospital's door quickly. The limousine was parked with the other car; it took him a while until he spotted it. Before he opened its door, he raised his head and saw the huge hole in one of the wall of the fifth floor. Inside the car, the dragon stared at him when he entered the vehicle. The demon was still wrapped inside the silken clothing.

"I can feel that there is a demon here; have you already meet him?" asked the blue reptile, without facing the dolphin.

The dolphin didn't pay any attention to the dragon, he searched for the backpack they were using to carry extra clothes. He opened it and emptied it over the seats.

"We should get out of here, you and your friends. It isn't safe" Spoke the dragon in a distant tone.

"Now, you stay quiet. I know you should be begging to your demonic fellows to rescue you" Growled Mareck, grabbing any ammo and guns he found, placing them inside the backpack.

"No, I'm not; because of me, you guys found the place where your friend was, and you destroyed the reception being prepared to Succobernoth. Even that I had no other choice on my previous situation, I will be killed for any demon that cross my way for having helped a hunter. Staying close to you is my best choice right now"

"Worse for you; now, if you excuse me, I have a friend to save" He placed Shaan's coat over his shoulder and grabbed the backpack.

The cetacean was already outside the vehicle when the dragon spoke again.

"However this demon inside that building be, it isn't a normal demon, I can feel he is strong, and..." the dragon winced.

"And what?"

"He finished what he came here to do; before he was using his powers deliberately, not caring in hiding his presence, but, now, I can barely feel him. But I can tell you this, he is preparing to leave.

"Alexei" Muttered Mareck, slamming the limo's door and running back at the hospital the fasted his legs allowed him to go.

At the fifth floor, Nurrey made two steps back. The door was emitting a blue glow, it pulsed slowly, at each pulsation, a large shard of ice fell to the floor. None of them had to even open the door. It opened alone once all the ice was gone.

The emergency room was a true chaos; a thick cold mist was covering everything up to the waist. It leaked to the corridor when they opened the door, behaving like a slow motion wave. The security team had their weapons drawn and was trying to find a mutual agreement about how they would enter, but the hunters didn't wait, they just ran and crossed the door.

The first thing they noticed was a large hole in the wall from which the wind was entering the room, dissipating the remaining of mist inside it. The medical equipment was all over the place, spread in every corner of the room; most of it was broken in several pieces or smashed. All this observation only took a few seconds, because something they saw made their lost their breath completely. It was Alexei.

The allosaurus was looking around with a confused face. The bed in which the doctors had placed him was still at its place, the dino hadn't any injury or damage. He seemed exactly the opposite of someone that was just about to die.

Edmund smiled and ran towards the dino, hugging him tightly. Shaan and Nurrey exchanged looks after seeing this, but said nothing about it. The three hunters circled Al's bed.

"Ed, Nurrey, Shaan, it is so nice to see you guy here; but, where exactly is here?

"We are in a hospital" Said Edmund. "You had some serious injuries over your body; your friends came as you said they would and brought you here"

"I can't remember much; I remember of being at that cell and those demons made us breathe some sort of powder or whatever, then, there was that catch of being naked and a ritual going on, but all the rest is just a huge blank.

"You three standing there, move away from him" Ordered one of the doctors that was pushed out from the room before. "He may look fine, but, considering the severe state he was when he was brought here we will need to run several exams before even letting him move.

"But I'm ok, look this" Said the dino, trying to get up.

The wolf bended his knees, analyzing the floor covered in dust. It didn't take long before he located a set of footprints, starting a few meters from the hole, going towards Alexei was now, and a different set, but from the same source, walking back to the edge. The wolf placed the bottom of his shoes next to one of them. Whoever left those behind, was smaller than him and very lightweight.

"Hey, Shaan you need to come over here to see this" Said Nurrey, turning his face to see the horse. Mareck was entering the room at the same time, he had the appearance of someone that went to hell and came back still alive. "And... Mareck, whatever it was happening here, it already ended. Alexei is fine"

The dolphin tried to reach the dino, but it couldn't go through the line of doctors surrounding him. He just waved at Alexei.

"What have you found, Nurrey?" asked the horse after get closer.

"Take a look in these footprints. We are dealing with some sort of small demon. Can you try to detect any energy trace?"

"I can try. But this demon is really strong and he is helping us, what exactly are you planning do to if we find him?" questioned the stallion, searching a specific rune in his pockets.

"We can start making a few questions"

"You two talk about this so naturally" Said Edmund. The rhino made the two hunters turn their heads back. "How can you do that?"

"After a while you just get used to it" Said Mareck, patting the rhino's shoulder. "Anyway, even after knowing everything you need to know about demons, you still can be surprised by what some of them do" He said that glancing at Alexei.

Shaan found the rune he was looking for and lowered it near the foot prints. The white stallion started to chant some words in Latin, gazing upon the rune on the tip of the golden chain, trying to notice the slightest sign of reaction from it.

Two minutes later, Mareck asked: "Shaan, are you sure that you aren't picking up any type of source emanating energy?"

The horse sighed.

"Not yet; but, if you let me focus on my task, maybe I'll find something"

"Ok, but I do think you won't find anything"

"And may I know why are you saying that?" Asked the horse, slightly bored as he was underestimated.

"I'm just saying that because your gizmos haven't picked up that thing over there yet. Said the dolphin, pointing at something outside the big hole in the wall.

The hunters saw a sphere of glowing blue light hovering into the air. Edmund didn't know what that thing was, so he stepped back saying a creative bad name. The remaining were silent, they already have seen that on Mareck's house and a couple other times after that.

"Take it easy, big boy," Said Nurrey, looking at the frightened rhino "This doesn't want to hurt us, or it would have already done that"

Just like the horse did it before, Nurrey walked almost to the edge of the building and stretched his paw towards the sphere. This one pulsed and moved at a snail's pace; for some unknown reason, seeing Nurrey doing this instead of him, and worse, the globe of energy awoke something in Shaan stomach, like a spiked beast in bad mood. However, something happened. The small sphere moved, ignoring the wolf completely. It moved until it was just a few inched from Shaan face. The horse just opened his paw and another feather, equal to the one that Succobernoth burned was lying on his paw.

"That, yes, was bizarre" Said Edmund, staring the small plume.

"You don't have the slightest idea of how bizarre that thing can be" Said Mareck.

Two hours after they had arrived at the hospital, Shaan was at the cafeteria on the first floor. Alexei was in perfect health conditions, but the doctors wanted to apply a sequence of exams to make sure he was ok in every way possible; after all, he arrived there wandering on the thin line between life and death. Edmund and Mareck were with him on his new room, it's not necessary to say that he was relocated to a different one after what had happened to the surgery room.

The vixen administrating the cafeteria came back and placed a serving dish with five cups of hot coffee to Shaan.

"Here is your order sir. There is anything else I can do for you?" She asked winking.

"No, thanks, that is all" The horse had other things on his mind to notice the hit he had received from the vixen.

Nurrey was sitting on one of the tables. Almost all of them were empty at that time of the night. The horse walked to him, carrying the serving dish and pulling a seat in front of his friend.

"We can go now. I just think that Alexei will be a little disappointed when he finds out that I didn't buy nothing of what he ordered"

The wolf laughed and sighed. "At this moment he should be happy with the fact he still alive, but we know that his stomach comes first in his priority list"

They both smiled, but the funny comment's effect didn't last long. Even that everything had come back to normal, their friend almost died. That shook them. Badly.

"So... let's go back there, then?" Said the horse, getting up.

"Shaan, sit down"

The wolf was serious. Shaan didn't argue, he just returned to his seat, dropping his weight on the chair. He knew he would have to explain some things, even which he didn't want to.

"Listen to me: I know how much you are happy with this feather of yours, but, remember, my friend, there is someone behind it, and we both know it can't be another thing than a demon. Still, you are playing with this thing right now. Shaan, we don't know what are this demon's intentions, so remember to watch out your back"

"I understand that you are worried about me, and I'm very glad; however, this demon already saved us, more than just once, now, he even saved Alexei when killing him would be so easy. Not to mention that, if wasn't for him, we wouldn't be having this conversation right now, we would be dead on Mareck's house, or still trying to figure out a way to try to find Alexei"

The wolf sighed, lowering his head until his cold nose was almost touching the polished surface of the table. "You are right about this. But... that last demon... I dunno. He doesn't looks like the type that would be killed by some ordinary grenades"

The horse smiled for a fraction of seconds, but the wolf noticed.

"What are you thinking?"

"Just... that how weird it is to think that we woke up on a large hotel bed this morning and that we made a short trip telling silly jokes and hearing your bad taste to music"

"Yep, it is weird. Sometimes our work is so intense that a day can look like a whole century"

Shaan moved his paw, grabbing the new feather, the cold sensation was just like the old one, strangely, he never liked to feel cold, but, with this feather, the feeling was comforting. So, something snapped him out of his daydreams, something cold had touched his other paw.

"Where did this came from" said the horse, looking down.

"This what?" interrogated Nurrey.

"A snowflake" Said Shaan, showing the small ice crystal in his paw, even that it could be easily confused with the equine's white fur.

The wolf turned his face, looking at the thermometer, that was right next to the digital clock fixed on the cafeteria's wall.

"The temperature here is around 92°F" the wolf said dryly "Whoever this demon is, he really likes ice, he can get as close as he wants from us, without revealing his presence, and he is also demonstrating too much interest.

"Interest for what?" Asked Shaan without moving his eyes away from the snowflake.

"Shaan, you are very bright, my friend. I thought you have noticed it so far. This demon is very interested in you"

The hunter's eyes met, and they stood like that for some moments, saying nothing. The icy blue eyes of the horse meeting the amber ones of the wolf

Wrapped by the sacred silken vests, inside the vehicle, the dragon felt the presence of another demon get closer, and, then, to his relief, move away, until it vanished. He sighed, at least he wouldn't be killed for now, he would have some problems with the hunters for sure, but, at that moment, knowing he would live, even for another hour, or longer, was already good enough to cheer him up.
