Unstable Serenity - Chapter 17, Out to Sea
Max's POV
St. Petersburg, Russia
I woke up only to find myself in a hospital bed. I seem to have been tossed around from injury to injury lately.
"Max," Viktor spoke.
I looked over to see he was by my side. "Hello, Viktor" I responded.
"You look like hell" he told me.
"Nothing's new" I said.
"The Red Sodium is secure, there's no need to worry about it anymore. Evvi's soldiers are working on it now" he informed.
"That makes me feel better, although if my government found out about this they won't get off your back about it" I warned jokingly.
"Well, your government shouldn't be even bothering about this since it's a Russian matter entirely." Viktor said.
There was a moment of silence after he spoke those words. A moment of peace and calm serenity. I haven't had these moments much lately, ever since the recent events that took place, I've always been keeping busy at something. I finally broke the silence when I started to feel uneasy about it.
"Hey uhh, Viktor... Do you happen to know by chance where Steven might be? I haven't seen him in a while" I ask.
Viktor sighed. "Last time I checked, he was in the United States, but I have a feeling he is going to be deported. The US doesn't take refugees lightly."
"I feared that" I replied.
Right after I said those words Viktor's cell phone rang. "Excuse me Max, I must take this as it is very important."
Viktor left the room and answered his phone. I could see him talking on his phone through the window, and although I couldn't hear what he was saying, I could tell he was upset by his body language.
After Viktor hung up, he entered the room again. "I'm sorry Max, but General Evvi just phoned, there are moles in the FSB and the Red Sodium was stolen... We have no idea where it is."
Those words made me feel uneasy. "What!?" I ask all surprized.
"Max, I have to go back to the Kremlin and find out where the formula is, in the meantime, you must stay here and get better!" He pointed at me as he left the room in a hurry.
Viktor's POV
I rushed out the door and made my way towards my ride, a black van with two small Russina flags stuck onto the front hood. I had to make sure that I got to the Kremlin on time to meet up with Javier, otherwise we would miss our few chances of getting back the solution, if we had any chances at all.
Moscow, Russia - 2 hours later
[Russian Dialogue]
"He was the same fur who helped Zarith escape from the detention center in the Urals" General Evvi said.
"One of the guards" I clued in.
"Yes, and he's on the run. His name is Nicholai Cherveendav, 31 and single; he enlisted in the Russian army at 17 and became a commissioned officer at the age of 26. Captain Cherveendav knew more about our counter-terrorism campaigns than he should have" Evvi explained.
"Do you think he may have gathered his information from another mole inside?" I asked.
"If so, then we may have a whole network of moles in our military" Evvi replied.
I sighed in stress.
"How many of us have access to the files and information about this matter?" I asked.
"You know as well as I do Viktor; only the people in this room" he gestured.
Looking around I saw three other furs in the room; a horse, a bull and a raccoon. All of us had the clearence to the information.
"What about your American friend?" He asked.
"What!? No! He couldn't have! He has the same enemies as we do! He doesn't even have access to the classified Russian database!" I defended.
"You did tell him the information however... You even smuggled him out of the United States! How the hell am I supposed to justify that!?" Evvi shot back.
The two of us were right up in each others' faces, nose to nose angry at one anther. We never fight like this, but something had clearly come between us.
"Sir, we need to work together, we can't afford to be fighting each other when there's clearly a bigger enemy out there" the raccoon in the back spoke up.
"He's right Evvi, we can't fight each other like this" I said.
"But what if you're not? Max could be leaking the information!" Evvi replied.
"Why would Max leak information to someone who tried to cut out his heart!?" I shot back.
"Maybe he's too generous!" Evvi yelled sarcastically, "I don't know! But find out!"
He let out a stressful sigh.
"What matters now is that we get the Red Sodium solution and find the Red October" Evvi clarified.
William's POV
Macapá, Brazil - 28 hours later
[English Dialogue] "You ready?" I asked my men as I put on my oxygen mask.
"All good sir, we're ready to go" replied one of them.
All four of us quietly dove into the water and swam down deep until we could see the river floor. I scanned the area with my flashlight so I could search for what I was looking for. Only a few hundred meters or so and I finally found it! She was beautiful, big, black and mostly covered in sand.
Since we were underwater, I communicated with my team using paw signals, and so I called them over. I swam up to the main escape hatch and got ready to pry it open. One of my men handed me a crowbar where I was then able to pry open the sealed shut hatch after loosening the valve.
I opened the hatch and we all gathered inside. Once everyone was in, I closed the hatch and attempted the drain the water. I sure hope that this old thing still works.
After I hit the button for it to drain I immediately noticed that the water level was lowering, and the oxygen supply had turned on. We removed out masks and were able to breathe comfortably.
"Okay, we made it" one of my men spoke.
"Yes, yes we did" I patted him on the shoulder.
I opened another door to enter the ship, and we made our way to the bridge. I was in awe once I walked right in.
Here it was, the Red October. A fine massive Russian ship that was only believed to be a myth, a story, a legend. But here I stand; before me was the world's greatest weapon. The ship may have been old, but her computers were far surpassed the modern technology in the 1980s. They could not be hacked from a modern computer, as these were completely independent from any satelite, or alternate communication or tracking source. It's stealth was beautiful, as it's auxiliary engines could drive it completely undetected.
No one would even see it coming.
"Okay, we're going to start getting this thing ready! You two, go to the engine room and fire it up. The rest of you, man a station you're familiar with and let's get this thing loaded!" I ordered.
These men I took with me had prior experience with ships, all of them are ex. navy. Most of them are former Russian navy except for one; Franklin Smithson, an American navy Commander; Ex. Commander. I was never sure about why he had left the US navy to join our cause but I had never asked.
Moments later the lights turned on and the one by one the engines fired up. I was not a ship expert but my men were doing a good job by the looks of it.
"Okay sir, we're ready to go when you are" Smithson told me.
"Go" I replied.
Soon enough we started to move. At first, it was very shaky, we must have been rubbing against the sand on the sea floor. Only moments later, did the ship start to run smoothly.
"We have to take her to the Northern Atlantic. This ship can take us there but it's going to be a while, so get comfortable here, boys" I called.
It only took about three hours to bore me of this ever-lasting sail across the atlantic. So I decided to take a tour of the ship. It never crossed my mind why I didn't do it earlier, after all, I was eager to see this legend, but at the same time, I must have been more eager to win this war against corrupt governments.
I walked through the hallways of the submarine and found my way to the Captain's Quarters. I made an attempt to open the door, carefully placing my paw on the knob. It wasn't locked, which was interesting because I would have though that after ditching this ship here, that they would lock everything up. I guess they never cared or simply never wanted to come back.
I inched myself into the room, scanning it for any traps that may come to my demise. Thankfully, I was not walking into any traps. The Captain's Quarters was not very big, but I guess living on a sub would be quite clusterd. I scanned the room once I walked in, and noticed a desk in the middle of the room, a bookshelf to my left and a nice comfy-looking bed to my right. There was also a window with drapes on the far side of the room, behind the chair behind the desk.
After taking a good look at the room, I took the honours of sitting in the Captain's chair. I wasn't a navy captain in matter, but I was acting captain of this ship for the time being. There was nothing but a lamp on the desk, so I decided to snoop around. I immediate found something that came to my attention once I opened the droor. It was a thick, heavy black object that looked to be about 9 inches wide and 14 inches long. I pulled it out of the droor and placed in on the desk. There was writing inscribed on the object in Cyrillic. It read Red Sodium in Cyrillic.
This was the computer that was designed to process the information that was held within the liquid substance. The information in that vial has all of the access keys to the most powerful features to this ship; her untracable stealth engines and her un-hackable software and ballistic missiles.
Unfortunately I did not have the Red Sodium with me, but Zarith said he was working on getting it. In the mean time, I will have to lay low and make our way to the North Atlantic Ocean.
Steven's POV
Karesuando, Sweden
"It's beautiful here" I said as Tom pulled up to a house. "Where are we?" I asked.
"Karesuando, a border town between Sweden and Finland" Tom told me as he cut the car engine.
"What am I doing here?" I asked.
"You're going to stay here for a while until William has been dealt with" he replied. "It's too risky to place you back into Russia, as he'll find you in a heartbeat. So we've arranged a safe-house for you here in Sweden. Now according to the United States, you're in Russia, and according to Russia, you're in Russia, and according to Sweden, you're not even here. So let's keep it that way until this problem has been solved, okay?"
"Okay" I nod.
"Good, now don't do anything that will get you into trouble from the authorities" he instructed.
We walked into a nice two-story house and the outside had light-blue sliding all around it. Once I walked in, I took a good look around; this was going to be my home for the next... I don't even know how long. Tom and I went upstairs to place our bags in our new rooms.
I sat down on my new bed, it squeaked, but I was just happy to be sleeping in a bed... And not on the floor. I barely had anything to unpack, it was simply clothes. Being a slave... Or former slave rather... I didn't posses much, if anything, I possessed nothing, and another fur possessed me. But that's not the case anymore, as I was free, free from William's cold circle of tyranny and abuse. I wanted to see Max again, but Tom was looking after me now. That wasn't a problem, but in the end, it was Max who stuck with me thick and thin.
Tom walked into my room and sat down beside me. He looked over to me and handed me a small hand book.
"This is for you, it's temporary" Tom smiled.
It read: 'Provisoriskt Pass Sverige'
I opened it up, and of the first page was a picture of my face, it even had my signature on the bottom of it... Well, that signature wasn't mine, only the face was.
"This is your alias until I say otherwise. Your name is Joshua Yickering, a Swedish national born in Stockolm" he explained to me.
"B-but... I don't even speak any Swedish" I said.
"That's okay, because I hired someone to teach you Swedish here. It'll give you something to do when you're bored" Tom said.
I sighed, "I just want this all to end!" I shed a tear after saying that.
Tom pulled me closer and hugged me in his strong, warm arms and spoke softly, "This will end soon, you have my word."
