Chapter 6
Ephemeral

Tom hesitantly peered out the nurse's door. He found the main office completely empty. The fox walked back in and sat down on the bed. It had been awfully quiet for the last hour since Anthony had gone to practice. Tom had waited there, worried about what could be happening to the husky. The nurse had left, to where Tom did not know, and this tempted him even more to leave and look for Anthony. But every time he wanted to leave, he would remember that Anthony had told him to stay put. He hoped he didn't have to wait any longer, since practice had ended a couple minutes ago.
The sound of footsteps reached his ears, and Tom jumped off the bed in excitement. His tail began to wag in glee. The sound got louder until, to Tom's surprise, the nurse stepped into the room. The nurse smiled at him, oblivious to Tom's sudden disappointment. "How are you feeling?" she asked.
"..uh, fine. I'm feeling a lot better."
"That's good to hear." The cheetah turned to her cabinets, and began locking them up. Tom wondered if it was time for her to leave. What if Anthony had left without him?
Tom shook off the though. Anthony wouldn't leave him. Maybe he was just tired from practice and its taking him a while to get here.
"Sweetie, are you okay?" The cheetah asked with concern. Tom blushed as he realized he had been spacing out.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I was just thinking."
"Okay. I need to leave, but before I can I need to make sure you have some way of getting home. Was that husky boy going to give you a ride?"
"Yes, but he has football practice."
"I think they should be out by now. Why don't you go look. If he's gone, there is a phone you can use at the front entrance."
"Okay." Tom walked out of the room, faster than he had meant to. The nurse shook her head as she watched the fox speed off.
Tom nearly sprinted down the empty halls as he made his way towards the locker rooms. Was it even a good idea to go there? Tom thought as he passed the cafeteria. The room was bound to be full with anti-homo jocks. He slowed down as he spotted the doors to the locker rooms. No jock was in sight, so maybe they were all gone. Tom stopped at the doors.
Should he wait outside or go in? Tom paced back and forth, juggling the idea in his head. He didn't have long to think because he suddenly stopped as he heard a howl emanate from beyond the door. Tom swallowed a bit as he reached for the doorknob. That howl, he had heard it before, but he couldn't recall where or when. The fox heard another howl echo inside, and he yanked the door open. A row of lockers stood ahead in his path, and he only had to go around them to see what the source of the noise was.
His keen nose instantly picked up the raw scent of...sex. Fear overcame Tom; he could feel his heart lurch in his chest. He distinctly smelled Anthony's musk in the air; it was a smell he would always remember. It hung heavy in the air around him, and now Tom was afraid of what he would find once he turned the corner.
The fox took a step back, thinking it would be better to just leave and never find out about what Anthony did. Still, his anxiousness spurred his curiosity, and that made him take a step forward, then two, and soon he was pressed back against the lockers. Now all that was left was to take a peek around. He slowly inched over and muffled a gasp.
Tom almost fainted as his eyes fell upon Anthony. The husky lay on Mike, both furs resting on the floor and grinding against each other. They held a slow and deep kiss, eyes closed as they moaned around each other's intrusive tongues.
Yet the worst part was that both the husky and the wolf were completely naked, and covered in sticky, white cum. The gooey mess was soaked into their fur and even in thick puddles surrounding them. Anthony's paws groped and wandered ardently over the wolf, almost as if they knew every inch of Mike's body. Tom couldn't believe his eyes. He wanted to cry out at the mere sight of Anthony with someone else, but his voice failed him.
The fox watched Anthony rise from the kiss, and howl in dominance as he moved his hips closer to the wolf's muzzle. His bright red and rigid cock pressed against Mike's lips, and they gave as his entire length slid easily into it,something Tom wasn't capable of doing.
Tom couldn't find the strength to do anything but watch in horror. The fox did not need to ask to know what was happening.
Anthony was cheating on him. The realization struck the fox faster than he had wished, and he yelped out. The lust-struck furs looked up from their daze, directly into Tom's wet, green eyes. That was only for a second before they watched him turn back.
Tom ran out as fast as he could, to where he didn't know. He ignored the shout behind him, and he only ran as fast as his legs would carry him. A moment ago the fox was completely drained of any energy, but now he felt like he could run forever. He vaguely remembered the nurse's words about the phone, and he steered himself towards the front entrance.
Once he reached the entrance, his emotions caught up to him. Tom stifled a cry, and then a sob, and finally sunk to the floor crying. He didn't care who heard him, and all he wanted was to let the pain out, any way he could. The pain didn't stop coming though; the tears and sobs did. He didn't realize how long he had been there, but his eyes were left red and his voice hoarse. Â
Why had Anthony done that? Did he no longer love him? Did Tom do something wrong? Maybe the husky thought of Tom as a quick fling, but the fox couldn't imagine Anthony being like that. All possible explanations ran through the fox's head, but none seemed to make sense.
He gave up on explanations and instead looked at the phone on the far wall. Tom wouldn't be able to hide the pain from his parents if he went home. There had to be somewhere else he could go to for now. The fox picked himself up and went to the phone, quickly dialing in a number. After a couple of beeps someone picked up.
"Hello?"
"Tyan, can you come pick me up?"
"Uh, sure. But what's wrong? You sound odd. Where did you go today?"
"I'll tell you later."
"Okay...are you still at school?"
"Yes, please hurry."
"I'll be there pronto." The otter hung up and Tom set the phone back. All he had to do was wait now. The fox walked towards a line of chairs against the wall, and he sat down to compose himself.
He didn't want to think anymore. He was tired, from crying, from this whole incident, and how did he feel? Betrayed, heartbroken, and used, but he couldn't feel mad.
In their past there was never an instance when Tom was mad at Anthony. Maybe he had been annoyed or jealous, but never mad. Now Anthony had inflicted the worst kind of pain, and he still didn't feel any anger.
This confused him the most and he was beginning to regret ever being with the husky. Had all those moments Tom and Anthony spent together been an act? He wanted to cry again, just knowing that Anthony probably never even loved him.Tom almost jumped as a figure shook his shoulders. He looked up at Tyan, who gave him a small smile.
"Hey, Tom." The fox got up from the chair.
"Hi Tyan. Thanks for coming. You got here sooner than I thought."
"Well, I do live close to the school. Come on." The fox followed the otter out to the parking lot and to his slightly dirty car. They entered quietly, though it didn't bother Tom. He was too busy thinking about how to explain the situation to care.
"Uh...Tyan. There's something I need to tell you..." The otter turned to him.
"I think I know what it's about." Tom looked down in embarrassment.
"You heard?"
"Yeah, but I didn't believe any of it. I wanted to hear the truth from you." Tom looked at Tyan.
"Thanks, you're a good friend, but you still need to know."
"Not at this moment. No offense, but you look like a wreck. You can tell me later when you're feeling better." Tom smiled at Tyan, who returned a whole hearted grin. The otter started the car, and they both buckled up. They pulled out of the nearly empty parking lot. Tom couldn't help but notice Anthony's truck still parked in the distance.
"Hey Tom, you want me to take you home?" The fox turned to the otter.
"I don't feel like going home. I need someone to talk to. You wouldn't mind if I stayed over your house for today, would you?"
"It's fine with me." Tom thanked the otter. They talked about various subjects in their conversation on the way to Tyan's house, a small distraction Tom was grateful for.

"It's so nice to see you! Come on in!" Tyan's mom said as she ushered the fox into the house. Tom barely managed a hello before Tyan grabbed his arm and led him to his room. The room was about as big as Tom's, but a whole lot messier. Tyan blushed over the state of his room.
"Sorry about the clothes and all. I've been busy." Tom said nothing as he sat down on Tyan's bed. The otter sighed as he looked at the fox. "You want to tell me what happened?" The fox quivered a bit before answering in an almost broken voice.
"Anthony...cheated on me." Tyan stared at Tom in confusion.
"What do you mean? You two are going out?" The fox looked up at the otter.
"Anthony and I were going out."
