Chapter 00: Preface

_COMPANIONS_ is a chronological series of novellas (Parts) that tells the story of two outcasts, a man and a sentient stallion, who struggle to survive in a world that makes every effort to tear them apart. Originally written for a specific Yahoo group, the story is primarily gay-themed, though straight and bi sex rears it's ugly head on occasion. ;-)

I have reformatted the text from its original structure by breaking up the larger chapters into smaller ones that meet the 64k size restrictions of Yiffstar. The chapters have been renumbered to make it easier to follow the order.

I hesitate to bring up this next item because it tends to confuse people, but it is useful to note where the novella boundaries are, since this provides a convenient stopping point in which one may put down the saga for the night. Each novella is its own story with a beginning, middle, and end. The next novella typically starts where the previous one left off. For example, Chapters 1 through 3 comprise the first novella, "Part 1." Chapter 4 starts the second novella, "Part 2." The novella parts are grouped as shown:

If you, the reader, are looking for a mindless quickie, then you should probably come back later when you have more time. I know that sounds supremely arrogant, but it is not intended to be. If you end up scanning through _COMPANIONS_ looking for just the dirty parts, you will find them not nearly as stimulating as you might by reading the story as written. I think if you give me an honest chance, I can get you hooked, but you still have to make the effort. And if you are under 18 years old, please wait until you are older.

_COMPANIONS_ started out as a cerebral masturbatory fantasy in Part 1. When finished, I found that I had created characters I was really fond of, so I took the sequel in a more plot-driven direction, making sure there was plenty of sex to hold my interest.

Part 2 was so much fun, that I decided to write one more part to make the series a trilogy and then get on with my life, since writing erotic fiction has yet to pay the rent.

As you can see, the "trilogy" is now twelve parts long and growing. Part 13 is currently in conception. The end is nowhere in sight.

_COMPANIONS_ is my first substantial piece of work. Consequently, I think my writing has improved as the story progresses. I have not gone back to re-edit the earlier parts, because I'd rather spend my time writing new material.

I have purposely not provided synopses for the various chapters on the index page because the story really must be read in chronological order, and peeking ahead can give away some of the major plot twists.

If you enjoyed reading it then I would love to hear from you. And I would even entertain suggestions as to possible future adventures. A lot of the material in the latter parts was included as a result of correspondence with readers who have become close friends.
