The Mysteries Around Us Pt. 5
#5 of The mysteries around us
Jason double checked everything that they had. He found his miniature one for traveling, but not the bigger one that was for bigger things like this. All he could do now was disinfect it, put a band-aid on it and kiss it well. He took the knife from the dying wolf, and cut a slice in his shirt. Setting the scissors down, he ripped a strip from the bottom of his shirt.
Jason folded it up three times and placed it onto Eiffel's wound and applied pressure. Within seconds, the rag was soaked through. Jason made another slice, and tore his shirt once again. Is hands were bloody, and so was his shirt. He had drops of red on his brow and face, but he didn't care. He applied the second rag. It took longer to soak through, but eventually did. He just kept it there, and applied more pressure.
"We need to get him to a hospital!"
"We can't!" Argon said. "They would go crazy when they see him. And you know I'm not lying!" Jason knew that all too well. But without anything in his duffle bag at home or his major aid kit, he was helpless. He didn't know what to do.......wait. Jason pulled out his cell phone. LOW BATTERY the screen flashed. He dialed in a number.
"Hello?" answered a weary voice after the third ring. "Jason? Why do you need to call me this early?"
"No time. My friend just got stabbed by some roadside robber. We are in the nearby Oakwood Park. I have only minutes left before my phone dies. There has been a major artery cut in his shoulder. I don't know what to do. They haven't taught us that yet in first year EMT class. But your in pre-med school. You know what to do, right?"
"Wow. Well, have you applied pressure to the wound?"
"Yes. My shirt in ruined, but yes I have."
"Ok. Then, get out your first aid kit."
"The small one?"
"Yes. Believe it or not, you have enough stuff in there to postpone your buddy's death for a few hours. Take the scissors, and make the wound look better."
Jason cut away the flesh around the wound, so it now looked like a clean incision. "Now what?"
"Do you see the artery that has been severed?"
"Yeah."
"Take out the goggles."
"Ok. What do I do with them?"
"You see that nose piece? The rubber one?"
"Yes."
"Take that off, and snip the edges. Then, sew It to the artery. I hope it fits." And it barely did. It was almost too big, but Jason sewed it on with perfection, despite his trembling hands.
"Ok. Done."
"Ok, is he awake?....no?......Good. Close up the wound like any other, and then bandage it. Dude, you need to get him to the nearest hospital before that rubber tubi-"

Jason's phone died. "We need to get him to a hospital! Or at least find a vet or something!"
They picked Eiffel up, and carried him down the trail. It wasn't too far away from here, that they had seen an of-road to a ranger's cabin. They could pass him off for a mutated wolf that attacked them, and they had stabbed it and tried to save it from death. Unlikely, but possible.
They ran down the hill and onto the side road. It was only on the top of the hill. "Argon, wait here. You can't be seen, remember?"
"Oh yeah..." Argon ran into the nearby trees. Jason managed to drag the wolf up the long and slippery hill, before reading a sign on the door:
OUT TO LUNCH> BE BACK IN AN HOUR. VETERINARY OFFICE IS OPENING AT 10 AM.
Jason checked his watch. It was only 9:47 AM. 13 minutes was too long. He dragged Eiffel around the side of the cabin. There were three cars parked outside. A van, presumably for the injured animals, a Volvo, and a Jeep. Jason went over to the Volvo and checked the license plate number. It was a brown Volvo, but he had to be sure. It was a different car, thank God. That would have sucked if it was the man's Volvo from before.
Jason pounded on the door until someone answered it. That someone was a young girl, probably in her twenties or so. She had on a brown uniform of a park ranger. She wore a scornfully look when she opened the door, probably expecting to yell at someone to wait a few more minutes, but that facial expression was wiped from her face when she saw the blood all over Jason.
"Oh my gosh! What happened to you!?!?!"
"Not to me, but my friend. He stabbed himself."
"Well, I'll call in a helicopter so he can get treated!" She was about to run off, when Jason grabbed her arm.
"He isn't human."
She looked confused. "What?" She came outside, saw Eiffel, and ran over to him. "Oh my. That's a terrible wound. Did he hit an artery?"
"Yeah, but I temporarily stopped the bleeding. He had a couple of minutes left before it fails."
She looked at the wolf, then at his body, and realized that he was a humanoid shaped animal. Her eyes got really big. "You're going to have to explain this to me when we get him fixed!" She yelled at Jason, and picked Eiffel up and carried him inside.
It was cool inside the building. The walls were wood, but the floors were linoleum. They walked past a receptionist's desk, and into another room. It was almost all stainless steel walls and floors. There was also a huge table in the center for operations. She set Eiffel down onto the table, and opened a drawer. She pulled out some scissors, and was about to cut Eiffel out of the suit, when his arm shot up and knocked the scissors from her hand.
"Not this suit, your not cutting this suit." He managed to growl. He couldn't even open his eyes, and breathing was hard for him. He had a pained look on his face. The girl picked up the scissors, and put them away, never taking her eyes off of the talking wolf-creature.
"He can talk???" She un-zipped the suit and inspected the wound.
"Yeah. I'll explain later, just hurry up and fix him." The girl pulled on some surgical gloves, a hat, and a mouth cover before re-opening the wound, and saw what Jason had done.
"Very clever. I would have never thought about that possibility."
She grabbed her sutures and cut out the rubber tube. She set it onto a side table, and took out a pair or smaller, curved scissors. "Grab the hose, turn it on, and suck up the blood."
Jason didn't wait to be told again. He grabbed the clear tube, turned the switch, and started to help. The vet cut away the damaged tissues, and then did some stuff that Jason couldn't see. He looked when he had the chance, and saw the artery was stitched up, and there was a piece of synthetic tubing there to bridge the gap. She looked happy, but still had some work to be done.
She took out a small rod, and pushed a button. It made a sizzling noise. Jason guessed that it was a cauterizing tool. She touched the smaller blood vessels, and pushed in the button. They sizzled and stopped bleeding. Jason was correct.
After half an hour, The wound had been sealed, the artery closed, and the blood replaced. So far, Eiffel just looked like a worn-out mutant with bloody fur all over his chest. He was unconscious, so Jason decided to take off his suit and wash it. The vet was in the surgery room still, cleaning up the mess, so she wasn't there. Jason unzipped the suit all the way. Eiffel's chest and tummy were a very light gray, almost white, while everything else was just a gray color. Jason noticed a sheath, much like regular dogs have. He pulled the suit off of Eiffel.
Jason searched the room for a blanket or something to cover up Eiffel modestly, but found only a towel. He wrapped that around the wolf's waist and left the recovery room for the washing machine. He went into numerous rooms before finding the right one. It was a small room with only three cup-boards above a washer and a dryer.
Both were empty, so he put Eiffel's suit into the big washer, and added some detergent. Jason shut the lid and turned it on HARD WASH. It groaned and started to fill with water. "Good," Jason said aloud. "Once this is done and Eiffel wakes up, I can ask him why he turned on first us, then himself."
"who is Eiffel?" Jason turned and saw the Girl in the doorway.
"He is the wolf you just saved."
"Well, My name is Melissa. May I ask what yours is?" She looked tired, and sweaty from the close brush with death, and sat down against the door.
"My name is Jason. And it's very nice to meet you Melissa." He sat across from her. "So, you were asking about how this all came about?" She just nodded her head, and put her chin on her hands. Jason then began to weave his tale of how he met Argon, showed her the forming scars on his upper arm, told her about the men in black suits that tried to taze and kill him and take away Argon, and finally how they met Eiffel and what had happened.
He had to stop halfway through to change the laundry, and then continued his story. By the time he was done, Melissa was practically rooting for them in their adventure. "Sounds surreal, but I have seen it with my own eyes! It's amazing what the government is allowed to do with genetics, though I can hardly believe that it is legal."
She stood, and helped Jason to his feet. "I'm not entirely sure that it is. I'm going to ask Eiffel what goes on in there." They walked back down the corridors, and when hey walked into the recovery room, Argon was sitting patiently in the chair by the bed.
"Jason!" Argon yelled and jumped across the room and tackled Jason, giving him a warm hug as well as a big surprise. While Jason tried to free himself from the wrath of a lonely panther, Melissa was inspecting the form and anatomy of Argon.
"Hmm. Seem as though they took human bodies, put paws on it instead of hands and feet, gave it an animal's head, but with a human larynx, and grew fur all over it's body." Argon got up off of Jason and stood tall and proud before Melissa, making her shrink back slightly.
Jason started to laugh, and then Argon burst in a fit of giggles. Melissa was confused for a second or two, before she walked out of the room in a huff at getting tricked like that. "So. What happened in here?"
"Well, we did surgery on his shoulder, and sewed him up and here he is."
"Why is he naked, save a towel around his waist?" Argon raised an eyebrow.
"His suit had blood on it, and when we tried to cut him out of it, he slapped the scissors away with the last bit of strength he had, so I thought that I might want to wash it for him, and the towel was the only thing in the room that would suffice modestly."
Jason inhaled after the long sentence, and exhaled. "Boy, I'm tired."
Argon said, sitting back down in the chair. He put his hands behind his head, and closed his eyes. "You know, I don't think Melissa is half bad. She didn't freak out as much as a normal person would."
Jason stopped dead in his tracks. She didn't. He himself didn't because of the time he spent with Argon before the incident. But she was caught off guard. All she did was take notes, and she got to explore a bit of Eiffel's body too. She even took a little bit of blood for some ‘testing' when they were done. Jason turned around and walked out of the room.
"Hey! Where are you going?"
"To get a drink of water down the hall. Just stay there Argon and don't follow me." Argon stayed there and didn't follow him. Jason walked down the hall quietly in the direction of the receptionist's desk. He head Melissa on the phone with someone.
"Yes. They are here........One was mortally injured.......he was wearing a Hunter's suit, but he seams to be a bounty hunter from the weapons he had............ Yes, I have him under control................ He is in the recovery room right now, as are his two saviors, as are his friends, Jason and the one who calls himself Argon...........No, not Argon, but I did get the injured one's. I believe it was 56-78632........Yes.......uh-huh.....of course.....right away sir, right away........yes?.............why? He is an innocent boy, and I don't want to-.......sigh, yes sir, I'll dispatch him as well........alright, good day to you too, sir."
Jason backed down the hall and went into the room. Argon was asleep, but Eiffel was stirring. He ran to Argon, and shook him awake. "Hmm? What's going on?"
Jason relayed the new info to him as fast as he could. "So we need to get out of here." The urgency in Jason's voice worried Argon. They got up. Jason ran to the laundry room, where Eiffel's suit was dried enough to be worn comfortably. He took it and ran back into the resting room where Argon had all of their stuff ready to go. He even had Eiffel out of bed without the towel.
"Hurry, before she gets here. I don't know where she went after she hung up, but I bet it's not somewhere out of town." They dressed Eiffel, careful around his bandaged shoulder, and zipped him up again. They holstered all of his weapons, and carried him to the pen window on the far wall. It had a screen, but that was just an obsticle you had to kick to get over it.
It popped out and Argon climbed out, followed by the stirring Eiffel. Jason had one leg over the edge when Melissa came into the room with three vials of liquid in syringes. She dropped them and cursed when she saw that they were leaving.
Melissa turned and ran down the hall. "Hold on. I have to follow her." Argon was about to protest when Jason shot through the room and around the corner.
"Stupid idiot." Argon mumbled and set Eiffel down before sitting down himself. Jason was near the end of the hall when he heard Melissa dialing in a number into her phone. ‘She's calling the director guy again' he thought.
Ring ring....ring ring.....ring rin-bzzzzzzzzzzzzzz "Huh? Hello? Hello? Director? Are you there? Hello?" She slammed down the phone and was running around the corner when she saw Jason twirling the plug for the land-line phone on the desk.
"Hey, traitor. Thanks for the surgery, but we have to get to the most northern corner of the state before my cousin Rocky goes out of town on a business trip. See ya in hell, my friend." He threw the end of the cable at her and she flinched by raising her arms. Jason jabbed her in both of her sides at the same time, and her arms flew to her sides and she jumped a little bit. With her like that, Jason had just enough time to throw a good punch to her head. A nice, solid SMACK went through the building, followed by a THUMP, CLUNK as Melissa was punched, then hit her head on the wall and fell to the ground.
"ahhahhahhh o-ooooo oooo OWCH! Jesus Christ.......oh God that hurt like a bitch!" Jason said hopping around and holding his hand. "does she had a steel plate in her pace or something? Ouch......"
He looked down, and kicked Melissa half-heartedly before walking out the front door. When he did, ha saw Argon and Eiffel, who was propped up by the bags, playing rock-paper-scissors. Argon had paper, and Eiffel had rock. Eiffel grabbed Argon's paw and they laughed.
"Good to see Eiffel isn't insane anymore." They both turned and looked at Jason. He sat down and told them what had happened inside. They laughed when he told them he told her they were going north, when they were obviously going west.
"I'm sorry, Jason. I didn't know what to do. You tied me up, but gave me food and drink and were so kind to me. Then, I almost killed you and then myself...." Eiffel looked ashamed of himself.
"Hey. Don't worry about it. All well that ends well, right?" Eiffel raised his head and had tears streaming down his cheeks.
"They are going to kill my sister now, and it's all because I didn't bring Argon back to the facility and kill you, Jason. I don't know what to do!" He broke down in tears. Jason felt sorry for him, but there was nothing he could do to comfort that kind of pain. Loosing a loved one and not being able to do anything about it must suck.
Jason stood up, and walked back inside. He found Melissa still on the floor. He rifled through her pockets, and found a calling card for the ‘Institute of Animal and Human DNA Research Labs'. It was only a little bit to the east. They could get there in a few days if they walked. It would have to be faster than that though. Jason pondered this. He didn't have a permit or a license yet, but there was a nice Jeep Wrangler outside that he was dying to drive......so learning how to drive a car now wouldn't hurt, would it?
He ran outside and picked up Eiffel, making him growl in annoyance. "Don't you growl at me. Or I'll be forced to drop you." Jason replied as they walked to the Jeep, which was thankfully unlocked.
Eiffel whimpered sarcastically and was shoved into the back seat and buckled himself up. Argon clambered in on the other side, and buckled up as well. Jason didn't get into the car just yet. Instead, He took out his knife and went to the Volvo. He slashed all four tires and the gas line, before doing it to the van as well. He headed back for the car.
"Ok. Now Melissa can't follow us." Jason climbed into the drivers seat. He put the keys, which were oh so nicely hanging on the rear-view mirror, into the ignition and started the car.
"Melissa may not, but what about them?" Argon pointed to the sky. There was a helecopter. It was close enough for Jason to hear now, but Argon had better hearing and heard it from farther away. "It's from the institute!"
The hellecopter landed on the grass next to the van, and four en spilled out, all in army clothes, and all were holding pistols. Then, a man in a tux came out and walked between the ranks of men. Eiffel gasped when he saw the man.
IT WAS THE DIRECTOR OF THE FACILITIES!
