"So were here, where exactly is here?" Jake asked while picking himself up off the ground.

"I'm not exactly sure but I would say that ‘here' is the bridge" Kaid said not really paying attention to the conversation. The ‘bridge' was little more than a platform with a few scattered stones. Looking over the area it quickly became apparent that this place had once been a lake or a large chunk of earth had been removed from the valley.

"Kaid I think this is where the keep used to be. This platform must have been the start of the road leading into the main gate," Cyin suggested looking around.

It was obvious that Cyin was right. The small platform seemed to suddenly stop at the edge of the spoon shaped crater. Walking first all the way around the stone platform Kaid slowly approached the start of the walkway. Glancing back to Cyin and Jake, Kaid walked the walkway to its sudden end a few feet away. The stone was a strange dark gray color, as he walked it almost sparkled. The effect was so odd it was mesmerizing to look at. Obviously whatever kind of stone this was it did not come from this large forested area.

"Kaid is everything alright?" Jake asked. He must have thought I was standing here too long.

"Ya Jake, everything is fine. I was just wondering where this stone came from. I have never seen stone sparkle like this."

I was starting to get dark and the ‘bridge' was still as much a mystery as when the group had first arrived here.

"Kaid do you remember what Nib'Var said?" Cyin asked.

"You mean about ‘resetting the stones?' I have no idea what he meant by that."

"Unless he meant for us to move all the stones and ‘reset' them somewhere else." Jake said jokingly.

"I don't think so Jake. It would take an army to move these stones even a few inches." Cyin scolded.

"OK everyone lets calm down and set up camp. This is not going to get solved tonight. Jake will you set up the tent, Cyin please scout the area, and I will gather wood for a fire." Kaid said slowly rubbing his face.

As Kaid made his way through the underbrush and large stones that made up the area around the bridge he was shocked to find that there were the remains of an old road leading away from the bridge. It was grown over and obviously had not been used in years, as Kaid followed this road he found something that was even more surprising, buildings. They where little more then stone walls with holes where windows and doors should be but it meant that a long time ago this had been a busy city. The most intact structure was a large two story building that was most likely a meeting hall or church, not able to help himself, Kaid entered the building. "You came to look for me." I asked, then added "Did you see us?"

The fire crackled loudly as fresh pine was thrown on. Staring into the fire Jake started thinking about what he was doing. Not a week ago he was living a normal life, working at the veterinary clinic. Now he was off on an adventure like those he read in books. Here he was, a sword toting support character in some swords and sorcerers story. It felt as if at any moment he would open his eyes and find himself in bed at home. "Thinking can be dangerous, don't hurt yourself." Kaid whispered into the fire.

A few seconds later Jake looked up. "Don't hurt myself? You are a funny guy, you ass." Jake said as they both broke down laughing.

Cyin walked into the firelight carrying an armload of sticks. "So what are you two laughing at?" Neither Jake nor Kaid wanted to answer so they both looked away pretending to be innocent.

"Nothing" they chimed together.

Cyin gave the two friends a hard look, and then walked off towards the bridge. "Fine, you two keep your secret." The two guys could only chuckle as she walked off.

A moment later Cyin shouted "Kaid, Kaid come here!" both heads snapped to the spot where Cyin had walked into the darkness. As one they jumped up, vaulted over the fire and ran towards Cyin's voice.

The sight that awaited Jake and Kaid was enough to stop them both in there tracks. Cyin was standing in the center of what used to be the bridge; the odd part was the golden glow from the stones themselves. The glow so perfectly matched the light from the sun that both Kaid and Jake had to squint to look at it.

"Cyin, how are you making them glow?" Jake asked.

"I'm not, they just started after I stepped on them" Cyin answered. "But that's not the weird part, I think these are words" she finished by pointing at the center of the glow.

Jake and Kaid quickly took the last few steps between them and the bridge. As they stepped onto the stones the glow became less blinding, and what looked like some kind of writing slowly formed on the center most stone.

"What does it say?" Kaid asked Cyin.

"I have no idea. I have never seen writing like this before." Cyin answered. "I hoped you would..." "Three north, two east, one threes." Jake cut in. Both Cyin and Kaid stood looking at him with wide eyes.

"It's Latin, old Latin, but I still understand it. I took two years of Latin as filler in college." Jake explained looking a bit embarrassed.

"WOW Jake that's great!" Kaid said. "What else does it say?"

"That's it. Three north, two east, one threes." Jake answered.

"What do you mean ‘that's it?' what does it mean? What three north, which two east, why one threes?" Kaid shouted in frustration.

"Kaid calm down. It must mean something, we will figure it out." Cyin said in a calming voice.

"The moon is up." Cyin said quietly, staring at the sky.

"What?" Jake asked obviously deep in thought as he sat on what remained of the bridge.

"I was just mentioning that the moon has started to rise." Cyin answered.

"Is it really? How long have we been sitting here trying to figure this out?" Kaid asked.

"Not long the moon is only a third of the way up." Answered Jake. At that moment Kaid sat upright eyes wide. "It's not one-threes, it's one third, like one-third a turn."

Jake thought about it for a moment. "You could be right, so we turn one of the stones? Which one?" Jake asked.

"Well its three north and two east." Cyin quickly responded.

"OK, but starting where?" Kaid asked as his excitement quickly diminished.

As if in silent answer to his questions the words on the glowing stone faded out. As the three companions sat watching a line formed cutting the stone in half from north to south. As the line touched the northern most part of the stone two smaller line shot back from the tip of the line in a V, creating an arrow pointing to the stone to the north of the glowing stone.

"Well, I guess we start there." Jake said out loud. The others nodded in agreement, still unable to completely believe the response of the glowing stones.

Not wanting to waste any more time the three friends stood and walked to the indicated stone. "I wonder if the glowing stone always shifts to show the arrow?" Jake asked more to himself then he looked between his companions. Kaid and Cyin just stood looking at the glowing stones, almost expecting it to answer Jake's question.

"Well at least we figured it out right?" Jake commented; a question not needing a response. As Kaid thought about the strangeness of all this he began counting stones.

"1...2...3 north, 1...2...east. Well this is it, but these stones are huge, how do we turn it?" Kaid asked. Without another word Cyin started to examine the stone closely. The first thing she noticed was a number of cracks in the stone that formed a triangle in the north west corner of the stone.

"Kaid I think this is it, but I can't see a way to move it." Cyin said.

"OK Cyin let me have a look." Kaid placed a hand on the stone and reached out with his power. The stone seemed perfectly normal. So Kaid then tried lifting the triangle out of the stone. It came out with only the smallest push from his power. Excitement gripped Kaid as he tried to spin the triangle clockwise, but it did not move! Not detoured, Kaid then tried a counter-clockwise move. The stone rotated slowly until all the sides lined up then Kaid let the stone fall.

Everyone gasped as a hum began in the air. At first it was felt more than heard, but as it grew in intensity the entire platform began to glow brightly. The light from the platform illuminated the surrounding weeds like a small sun. The air at the front of the platform began to waver and shift as if there were a great deal of heat rising from the stones. As the three stood watching an extension of the platform slowly appeared just past the haze.

"This is it! This is the way into the keep!" Cyin shouted. "We did it, we found it!" The excitement in Cyin's voice was obvious.

"OK we need to break camp, back quick and get going I have no idea how long this thing will last." As Kaid finished he turned from the strange hazy portal to see that his friends had already left to break camp. Following suit, Kaid left the portal to help his friends. As the three returned the portal was still the way they left it. Looking at each other the three stepped onto the platform and approached the portal.

"Hey look at this" Cyin said as she walked over the glowing stone. "It changed again." As Jake waked over he stopped, turned and yelled, "Get through the portal we only have four seconds left!"

Not taking time to question Jake's orders, Kaid and Cyin started running. They jumped through the portal followed a second later by Jake. As Kaid turned to look back the portal snapped shut.

"Jake how did you know?" Cyin asked.

"Well the glowing stone was counting down, as I watched it went from six to five then I shouted." Jake replied.

"Well that must be why Nib'Var told us that we were on our own getting back." Cyin said staring at the empty space where the portal used to be.

Turning to look away from the empty spot that marked the end of the journey to the keep Kaid wondered what was waiting for them at the keep.

The air on the bridge had a strange quality to it, like the steam in a bath house, only without the steam. The bridge stretched in front of them lit from some unknown source. Other then the bridge there was nothing, just a deep gray fog like atmosphere, at the end of the bridge was a large portcullis like the ones all those medieval castles have in the movies. As the trio approached the portcullis lifted to allow them to enter.
