Three Moons- Hindsight Chpt.1
Three Moons
Nearly all the dragons of the kingdom of night had all gathered around the nest of Foreteller and Clearsight. The single egg within had started to stir. This was a normal occurrence, and while it would not have normally attracted such a crowd, tonight was the brightest night. The brightest night was a time when all three of the world's moons were waxed completely, and high in the sky, which meant that any Nightwing hatchlings that came into the world on this special night would have powers beyond anyone's comprehension.
The last brightest night had been nearly fifty years ago, and the only dragon to hatch on that night was Clearsight himself. He gained the rarest of the abilities that a Nightwing would have been able to inherit. The ability to read the minds of those untrained in guarding it, and the gift of sight, which enabled the gifted one to see any and all possible futures and the paths it takes to get there.
" It's unfair, ours hatched a week too early." Said an indistinguishable voice in the background, far from the ears of the parents staring intently at their egg.
" Sssh, the queen is right there, don't let her hear you." Whispered another back. "You know how much she wants another one."
" Yeah, I know, but, what if it's a female, then it could challe-" The first voice spoke again, until they were silenced by a sideways glance from the Queen, who sat high above the others and watched over the goings-on with an intense stare. The queen shifted slightly, then sat up on her ledge when the egg shook violently, and the shell began to crack.
Clearsight sat up, and shot a glare in the Queen's direction. The gaze of his maroon eyes made the Queen look away in shame. He could see it, in every future where a female drake emerged from this egg, the Queen had instantly swooped down to kill it, each and every time. However he turned his gaze back to the hatching of his first child. He shook off the hateful thoughts coming from his sister-in-law, and instead focused on the ones of joy and elation coming from his mate, Foreteller. Her scales a dark navy, and her eyes were white with purple pupils, and she was perfect in nearly every way. Her horns arced back in perfect parallels, her scales had no scars, or blemishes, and she was of a healthy weight, neither too large nor too small. He smiled more to himself at the thought of being with her, but frowned again as he knew he was far from perfect.
He was small, too small. He stood only half as high as the other males, his fire was weak, and his scales were so smooth that they shined even in the light of only the stars which made him an easy target to spot in the darkness, even though he was the same color as the night itself. His horns were cracked in places. He looked up, and smiled at his mate, who in turn, gave him a kind hearted smile back. His heart thumped heavily a few times in his chest, and he blushed, then looked back down at the egg.
A tiny tooth like appendage managed to break through while he wasn't paying attention, and with the break of the seal he could feel the mind of the creature inside. It was terrified, but curious and excited. The other dragons, including the Queen herself, all backed away and out of sight of the nest in an eerie unison, while at the same time the parents moved closer to it.
More of a head began to emerge through the soft leathery shell that made up the egg, and soon a blunt snout emerged from it. The Queen peered over the edge, and at the sight of a blunt snout, signifying a male, she turned and left the group of dragons behind her as she was no longer interested. Clearsight let out a long breath he hadn't quite realized he'd been holding. Foreteller smiled, and whispered to the hatching egg.
" Come, come to us and see the moons." She spoke softly, as if any sharp noises or sounds would shatter the rest of the egg, and deprive the newly hatched dragon of it's first right of passage. The small black hatchling had managed to free it's entire head, and his jaw open and closed as it coughed and instinctively tried to breathe in its first breaths. The egg rolled forward and the hatchling landed so he could stare into his mother's eyes, though everything was upside down to him.
With a few small wiggles and a few soft chirping sounds, the hatchling managed to right itself. After a few moments of heavy breathing, he dug his soft front claws into the rock that was the nest, and pulled himself from the egg. After a few moments he froze, and his gaze slowly went up to look at the three moons, all full, directly above him. The hatchling was confused almost, they seemed to be speaking to him, and slowly his eyes glazed over with a white shine that made him appear to be blind, which caused a din of murmurs to fill the area.
The hatchling stopped after a few minutes, and shook his head clear of the fog that had seemed to fill it only moments before. He took a few shaky steps over to Foreteller, but was stopped when he tripped slightly along the way over the odd cord that linked his stomach to a sac inside the egg. By instinct he turned, and bit his razor sharp teeth into the cord, severing it in one motion. He resumed his short two meter trek to his mother, and once he made it to her feet he felt a great amount of relief, and fatigue. He gently coiled his body up, and laid beside her as his mind and body drifted off to sleep.
" Hindsight" Clearsight said to both his mate and the hatchling. Foreteller looked at Clearsight with a bewildered look.
" Hindsight? That's an odd name for a seer." She said, sounding amused. "Why not name him Foresight, at least that way it would make some sense, he can't see the past." She said, right before she began to use her tongue to clean off her first son, and the only egg of her first clutch.
" I thought about it, and to be honest I'm not quite sure why, but Foresight seems too pretentious." He responded. "Besides, we can't have him share a section of both our names, that would be strange." He said as he stared down at his son with a feeling of pride. Hindsight was strong, he broke through the egg in less than an hour after starting, but he was oddly small, just like he was. In fact the hatchling looked almost exactly like him. His scales were black, even his underbelly was gray like his fathers, though it was a slightly lighter shade. Unlike most Nightwings, Hindsight completely lacked the white speckles on his wings that resembled the stars of the night sky.
Hindsight opened his eyes and stared intently up at Clearsight while he was mid thought, and tilted his head inquisitively to one side. Clearsight could hear his own mind echoing off of his son's which then fed back through their mental link, and eventually became the same as the sound of a waterfall of thought, he severed the link quickly before it got too strenuous, and watched as his child winced and gave a small chirp of sound that resembled a dog yelping.
Clearsight muttered an apology, even though Hindsight couldn't quite understand it yet, and he leaned a bit on his larger mate with a sigh.
" He's perfect, in every way." Foreteller spoke, right after she finished cleaning Hindsight, who was now yawning as he found it impossible to sleep with the sound of all the voices and minds around him, both that of his parent's and the others lurking unseen in the shadows.
" He is...I can already see it in his eyes, he will do great things." Clearsight said, staring at Hindsight's yellow eyes, with red irises, which darted from the location of one sound and went to another. He realized quickly that his son must be getting barraged by the minds of all those gathered, and he stood up and yelled out over the crowd. "Leave us! I have a son who has just made a long journey, and he needs rest without your mouths and minds nearby, gossip elsewhere!" Clearsight watched as a few slinked back, then more. He may have been the smallest of the males, but he was by far one of the most important. His sister was the queen, and he was the only three moon nightwing to have been born in nearly three thousand years, and now his son as well.
Clearsight turned to look at Foreteller and Hindsight. "I'll be right back, I need to go get some food for him, and you." He added, remembering that she hadn't eaten for nearly a week as she watched the egg. He stepped away quickly, leaving his family behind him for the moment. He turned and chased away a few straggling dragonets by snapping at them with his his teeth bared. They scattered quickly as he moved over to the storage area they used to keep meats they had dried out during sun-time. With a single claw he started to rake in a cow worth of dried meat, when he felt a great pressure in the back of his head, and the world went white.
He opened his eyes and he was standing in the middle of a field at night, though the moons were no longer full. Hindsight was laughing, and running towards him, then he ran straight through Clearsight. He sighed as he let the vision take hold of him more and simply sat down to watch the proceedings. Hindsight was much older, by his guess his son was nearly 3 now. He watched as Hindsight pounced onto the tail of himself in the vision. Vision-Clearsight turned around and smiled, and used a single claw to flick Hindsight off him and onto the ground behind him. Vision-him chuckled, and stopped, and went dreadfully still, and pale. He seemed to be panicking. Then started yelling. "Hindsight...Look away...LOOK AWAY." Then, there was a loud bang, and a hole was where Clearsight's chest had been. The world wavered slowly, and then seemed to dissolve with the sound of Hindsight's screams.
" -earsght hey? CLEARSIGHT?" a voice was screaming at him, though it sounded worried. He shook his head and looked up at a dragon whose name he never bothered to remember.
" W-what is it?" He said, his voice trembled and he looked around, and saw that he had scattered the meat he was gathering around the clearing. Further inspection showed that he seemed to have had a violent seizure in the middle of the vision, which only further upset him.
" You were grabbing some food, and got so still I could have sworn a few birds landed on you." The dragon said. "And then, you started thrashing about as if you had been hit by lightning and you were trying to get the fires out!" The dragon was pale as well. "Did you have another prophecy vision?"
Clearsight nodded slowly. When the visions forced themselves upon him, they were moments in time which could not be avoided, or bypassed. "I...It is nothing of any importance to the kingdom, or the queen, it is my own prophecy." He said, as he started to collect the food he had spread about. Clearsight quickly shuffled away from the onlooker, and once he was out of view he dropped all the food once more, and nearly started to scream in horror and anguish.
He had just seen how he was going to die
