#1 of Valley of Wings

This is a relatively short introduction chapter to "Valley of Wings", a story involving feral dragons and sex. There is no adult content in this chapter but there certainly will be in later chapters. It is also the first adult story I have written so any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks for reading!

Ryan's alarm clock woke him up. He rolled over to turn it off and was instantly groaning and in pain. He smacked the large button on top of the infuriating machine and rolled onto his back again. Every muscle and bone in his body screamed at him. All he wanted to do was go back to sleep. Turning his head slowly he checked the time on the alarm clock. 7:30. His first class of the day was at 9:00, just enough time to get ready and drive to the campus.

Ryan was 5'9 and thin as a twig. He had shoulder length black hair and dark blue eyes. He was 21 years old, going on 22 in a month, and he had no idea what he was going to do with his life. So far his plan was to continue going to college and hope he figured it out soon.

Ryan swung his legs over the bed and slowly stood up. His legs were shaking and for a moment he thought he was going to fall over. He carefully creped out of his room and to the bathroom. Reluctantly he began his morning ritual. He turned on the shower and stripped off his pajamas. He was almost 22, and he still wore Star-Wars pajamas to bed. His parents had given them to him as a joke gift. He checked the water, and when he was satisfied with the temperature he stepped in. He was instantly calmed as the warm water rushed over his bare skin. The wonderful shower was over all too quickly, and he stepped out from behind the curtain. He wrapped a towel around his head and examined himself in the bathroom mirror.

He needed to shave. There was a little stubble growing on his face but not enough to be a problem just yet, and he simply did not feel like it. He left the stubble and proceeded to dry his hair with the towel on his head. It took a while because of the length of his hair, but he put up with it. After his hair was dry enough, he brushed his teeth, gargled some mouthwash, and leaned forward to floss. He stared intently at the mirror the whole time and as he was finishing there was a strange movement in his reflection. A surge of color had passed over his eyes. For a second he could have sworn they were red.

Extreme pain flared up again in his head. He swiftly put the towel around his waist and rushed to his room. He gathered some clothes without even looking at them and threw them on. He grabbed his backpack that he had packed the night before and headed downstairs. His parents were sitting at the table waiting for him.

"You look like shit," his father told him as soon as he came into the room.

Ryan grunted. "Thanks."

"No problem." His father casually took a sip of his coffee, as if this was just a normal conversation.

"Are you OK to drive? You look pale." His mother actually sounded worried unlike his father. Everything was an opportunity for a joke with him.

"Probably not." He responded. "But don't you have work?"

"Your father will take you."

Ryan's eyes went down and his father's lit up. He jumped from his seat and gave an over-exaggerated shout of joy. "Oh yay! Some good old father-son bonding time. We can stop for some golf, throw some baseballs, get lunch. The possibilities are endless."

Ryan gave his father the coldest gaze he could manage and said, "I'll murder you."

His father snorted. "You don't look like you could murder an ant at the moment."

And so Ryan sat down and ate breakfast, doing his best to tune out his father's excited ranting and snorts of laughter. After they finished, they entered his father's truck and drove to the school. His father was singing along loudly to the radio and Ryan remembered thinking "My mother married a child."

Ryan hated algebra. The professor droned on and on in a voice that could put a caffeinated 10-year-old to sleep. He groaned, put his head in his hands, and tried not to think of his raging headache. Desperately, he closed his eyes and tried to block out the pain. It seemed like he closed his eyes for only a minute, but the next thing he knew the professor was dismissing them.

He collected his things and rushed to the bathroom. He had a full 20 minutes until his mythology class and he needed to splash some water in his face. He burst through the doors and rushed to the sink. As he turned on the water and leaned forward he suddenly felt lightheaded. There was a flash of color across the mirror, as if the light shifted. For the second time today his blue eyes looked red. He blinked in surprise and the color was gone. He splashed cold water in his face, dried off, and left the room.

Ryan knew he had to get out. Sure, college was important, but he could barely stand up. Paying attention to a class was out of the question. He made his way down the hall to where his mythology class took place and found the professor standing in the hall.

He liked Professor Hadley, she always found a way to make classes interesting and frequently took them to lunch after big tests. She saw him coming down the hall and as he neared said, "You look like shit."

"And I feel worse." Ryan did not comment that she was the second person to say that today. "I think I'm going to skip out today. I just figured I should let you know."

Professor Hadley nodded thoughtfully and responded. "Yeah I think you should. You're not driving though are you?"

"No," Ryan shook his head, "I had my father drop me off so I'll just call him to pick me up."

"Ok, take care." She waved as he walked away and pulled out his phone. His headache was getting worse by the second. He would not be able to talk on the phone so he simply sent a message saying, "Need pickup, I'll wait out front." He slowly shuffled to the main doors, a process that seemed to take forever. Once outside he sat heavily on the steps and waited. Not five minutes later, his father's truck pulled up, but in that short time he felt on the verge of passing out.

He entered the truck and collapsed in the passenger's seat. He heard an echo in the distance of his father saying "Are you OK?" He would have responded if he didn't feel like he was dying from the inside out. His father looked at him, genuine worry now etched on his face. He felt a wave of nausea and his father's expression turned to shock. That was when he passed out.

Ryan did not even have to open his eyes to know he was not at home. He was laying on a soft surface and covered by what felt like a blanket, but this was definitely not his room. He briefly wondered if he was in the hospital before opening his eyes. The sights around him made him even more confused. He was indeed lying on a mattress but it was on the floor in the center of a very large room. The floor was stone and the walls were made of wood. It seemed to be about 20 feet high, wide enough for an 18-wheeler to stretch between the walls, and even longer that it was wide. Lying on a small mattress in the center made him feel very small. On one wall there was a set of massive doors that stood almost as high as the ceiling and a normal sized door next to them but other than that the walls were blank.

Ryan looked down and saw a glass of water, two pills, and a note. He looked at the note; it simply said, "Aspirin". Ryan did not seem to be in as much pain but his head was still throbbing. He quickly swallowed the pills and gulped down the water. He tried to stand up and almost fell over before he regained his balance.

"Hello? Anyone there?" His voice echoed loudly in the massive chamber and when there was no response he headed for the doors. He briefly wondered why there needed to be such a large set of doors before opening the regular door and stepping outside.

The sunlight was blinding. The massive room had been lit by large lights on the ceiling but was not nearly as bright as it was outside. When his eyes adjusted he saw mountains, trees, and lots of log cabins. Next to each cabin was a large log building like the one he had just exited. Looking around at the mountains he saw that they surrounded him. It seemed that he was in a large valley. He could hear the distant chatter of other people but no one else was in sight. A noise behind him made him turn around. There were two people sitting in chairs next to the door he had just exited through. His parents were just sitting there watching him.

"How do you feel?" His mother asked him.

Sam said the first thing that came to his mind. "Where am I?"

This time his father spoke up." You're in the valley."

"Yeah, I can see that. But why am I in a valley?"

His father sighed. "Not A valley, THE valley. Any other questions or can I continue?"

Ryan opened his mouth but thought better of it and let his father speak. They started walking down a path through the trees, towards the voices. His father told him that the valley was a sanctuary in the Appalachian Mountains. Before he could ask what kind of sanctuary it was, they emerged from the trees onto a hill above a large field with a lake on the far side.

The field had even more of the cabins with the strange buildings next to them. It was a strange looking town, but still it was obviously a town. Between the rows of cabins there appeared to be giant dirt roads. Traveling along the roads were many people and enormous shapes that he could not make out from this distance, but they dwarfed the people next to them.

"What are those?" Ryan did not get an answer from either of his parents. There was a loud movement to his right, and he turned to face it slowly. Sitting, coiled up in the grass, bathing in the sun, was one of the giant creatures. From this distance of about 20 feet he could easily tell what it was. A giant dragon. It slowly stood up on its four legs and Ryan got a better look at it. It was about 35 feet long from the tip of its tail to its snout. Its shoulders stood 10 feet of the ground. A massive set of leathery wings were folded against its sides. The dragon was covered in deep ocean blue scales. As it stretched out Ryan saw that its underbelly and the underside of its wings were actually a lighter shade of blue. There were small spikes going along its tail, back, and neck. There was also a set of thin, elegant, ivory horns on its head. For some reason Ryan instantly knew it was a female. Her body was slender but still muscular. It seemed like she was built for agility.

She stuck her head out until it was barely a foot from his face. The eyes were a shocking light blue and full of intelligence. She was definitely no dumb beast. Ryan fell backward and landed hard on his rear. He could hear his parents laughing and a low rumbling sound from the dragon. She was laughing at him too. He blushed furiously and quickly picked himself up. The dragon bunched up her powerful legs and sprang into the air. She spread her large wings and flew away towards the town below.

His parents stopped laughing and he turned to them. "Was that what I think it was? A dragon?"

His mother answered. "Well it certainly wasn't a chicken." Seeing his annoyance she continued. "Yes, it was a dragon." Then something happened that caused him to fall on his ass for the second time that day. His parents both grew in size and changed shape so rapidly that it was over in the blink of an eye. Instead of his parents in front of him there were two dragons. They were slightly larger than the blue one that had just left. His mother was a bright green and his father was an intimidating combination of black and red.

About 20 minutes later, he was walking with his parents, who had changed bock to human form, down the hill and into the town. He was still shocked at everything that was happening but starting to accept it. Apparently dragons were not beasts of legend. They were real and had just gone into hiding using their ability to turn into humans. His parents were dragons and, apparently, so was he. As he walked down the road between the cabins he inspected his surroundings. He found that he could easily tell male dragons from female. The females were slender and elegant but the males were slightly bigger, had more defined muscles, and larger spikes.

"So I've been here for a day but I only passed out two days ago? How did we get here so quickly?"

His father answerd this question. "A helicopter. The man who owns this land is very rich. He runs several resorts and uses his money to provide a sanctuary. He also happens to be one of us. A dragon." His father explained how he had seen Ryan's eyes turn red as he passed out and immediately called for help, picked up his mother, and drove to the airport. The helicopter was waiting for them and flew them here. A red dragoness passed by them on the road. Ryan realized why it was so big There was room for at least three dragons to walk side-by-side.

As Ryan watched another dragon-this place was full of them-landed in front of a cabin, it quickly shrunk down into the form of a man and walked through the door. "So, have I transformed yet?"

His father shook his head and his mother spoke. "Not yet, but it is likely to happen in the next 48 hours. You have to sleep in one of the large buildings until you get control of it."

"So that's what they're for? I was wondering about that."

"Yes," his father said. "Every house has one. They are meant as a place where dragons can sleep in comfort. And since you won't have control over when you transform it is best that you stay in one." His parents waved to a group of people about their age. They obviously knew most of the people here. Many dragons and people nodded their head in greetings at him and he nodded back. Several stopped to say hello. Ryan was surprised at the voices. The male dragon's voices were a deep rumble but still, in a way, human. The dragonesses had the same deep rumble in their voices but they were obviously female voices. They reached the lake and turned around, heading back towards the hill they had come from. Ryan decided he liked it here.

After a few hours of getting acquainted with the valley and its people, Ryan and his parents ate dinner at what appeared to be the one restaurant in town, and they escorted him back to where he woke up. His father transformed into a dragon and stepped on a large peddle that he had not noticed near the giant set of doors. With barely a sound they swung open. His father then showed him the same type of peddle on the floor inside. "So you don't get stuck if you transform in your sleep, which is probably when it will happen for the first time. Step on the peddle to open the doors and step on it again to close them." With that information his parents said goodnight and left. His father closed the giant doors on his way out and Ryan was left alone.

He realized just how tired he was. There was a small dial on the wall near the small door. He turned it and the lights on the ceiling dimmed. He kept turning until there was just enough light to see. He then made his way to the mat on the floor and fell down. He reflected on just how insane his day had been and then closed his eyes. Within moments he was asleep.
