On the Care and Feeding of Unicorns - Ch 1

Story by Tulukki on SoFurry

Young anthro unicorn Tulukki's escape plans are dashed when a slave owner looking for a new charge sets his eyes on her.

** Tulukki is a Capricorn Unicorn, head and body like a whitetail deer fawn, small spiral unicorn horn, feathers on hind legs, lions tail, mane. Mane and tail are gold/blonde, rosy grey dapple markings down spine across shoulders and hips and down to elbow/knee, arms and legs from elbow/knee down are solid pale pink. Eyes are a bright blue with classic dark horse lashes. She’s intelligent, and sassy, but small.**

She stood in the small paddock ruffling her pale gold mane, trying to hide the small horn that rose from her brow. She’d already rubbed dirt onto her lower legs and arms, trying to make it look like she had socks. The dirt on her rump looked vaguely like markings instead of splotches of mud. As she began pacing among the other mares, she dug her fingers into her scalp, trying to think of other ways to look like a worn down nag. Her lion’s tail was the only thing that was a dead giveaway as to her species; Capricorn Unicorn. She was a strange unicorn, with her deer-like body, pale pink dapples, and small horn. When clean and well groomed she looked like a living freshwater pearl, all lustrous shine and soft colors. However, right now she wanted to look as dirty and ugly as possible. There was a new Master visiting the stables today, looking for broodmares, pleasure slaves, and surrogates. The little unicorn had lived her entire life in slavery, and now, at twenty-two years old, she’d be willing to do just about anything to avoid being sold as a broodmare.

She wasn’t the only unicorn in the paddock, and there were plenty of other mares that cleaned up as well as she did, so all she had to do was blend in. With any luck, this would be the last time she stood in a paddock as a piece of property, instead of on the other side of the fence as a free woman. Anthros in this country were still treated as less than humans, often slaves and on occasion minimally paid servants. But whispers of faraway lands were always drifting through the Anthro community. Ten years ago Anthros working in the harbors on the west coast had begun to hear stories from sailors and sea bound slaves, speaking of an uncharted land protected by ships manned only by Anthros. Now after six months of planning she was ready to slip away any day now, as long as she wasn’t purchased.

She nervously tugged at the tag on her collar, which stated her species, age, temperament, whether or not she’d been bred, and her name; Tulukki. Her mother had been a free woman, as had her father. Both had been captured in their homeland, far northeast and near the sea, and brought to England. The English focused on breeding show anthros for performing and highly specialized service and trades. Pleasure slaves, dancers, singers, crafters; if they were the best they came from English countryside and London schooling. Equine anthros were either used for work, or trained into dressage dancers and pleasure slaves. But not even the prospect of becoming a coveted, well treated, slave was enough to entice the unicorn into “working with the system.” After being born into slavery, she had watched her father be killed during an escape attempt, and her mother had died of illness years later. But before her mother had died, she had told Tulukki stories of her home. The little filly had listened intently to tales of home cooked food, friends and family, beautiful forests, and cool sea water. No matter what it took, she was going to escape, and she was going to go to her family’s homeland.

Tulukki’s ears pricked at the sound of the stable hand leading the prospective Master through the stables, past the beautifully groomed mares and stallions, to the messy paddock out back. Tulukki had done everything she could to devalue herself so she wouldn’t end up in the stables as a potential “prize winner”. If she wasn’t valuable she wouldn’t be chased when she left, so she’d acted stupid, clumsy, and cranky whenever she had been handled. While that meant she wouldn’t be purchased as a pleasure slave, she still could be chosen as a surrogate, or worse, a broodmare. Surrogates served the purpose of nursemaids to the foals or other anthro children of Prize Winners. These children would be trained and groomed into beautiful and expensive pleasure slaves and performers. However, a prized dancer who had already spent several months off stage due to pregnancy couldn’t then spend another year nursing an infant. So these children were put into the care of surrogates who had been bred into lactating. Surrogate infants, or “nursemaid fodder” were taken away and fed gruel, raised in workhouses, and often died before their fifth year. Yet even becoming a surrogate wasn’t as bad as becoming a brood mare. Broodmares were chosen for their breed standards, and bred with intelligent, well mannered stallions in hopes of producing new bloodlines of viable prize winners. A broodmare didn’t even get the pleasure of raising a child, be it her own or not, as a surrogate did. Broodmares were simply bred over and over in an attempt to produce as many viable offspring as possible. Tulukki, with her light colors, demure stature, and sound health was the image of unicorn breed standard. So now she was rubbing dirt on her legs and in her hair to look as ugly as possible, and praying.

The stable hand and the Master finished looking at any prize winners in the stable and came through the barn door, some distance away from the smelly paddock crammed full of potential surrogates and broodmares. The Master was smartly dressed in a tailored suit, with dirty blonde hair messily brushed back. He was around forty, probably part of some wealthy family, and tall. His dark eyes began to roam across the twenty or so mares in the paddock, and Tulukki did her best to keep to the middle, shouldering weaker or more timid mares towards the outside of the group where they would catch the Masters eye.

“Alright girls! Listen up!” yelled the stable hand as the two men drew close to the paddock. “This is Master Windsor, be polite and respectful now!” Tulukki noticed how the ears of a few of the mares pricked at the mention of the name Windsor. The Windsors were a very powerful family; even distant second cousins were wealthy and considered political figures. Being owned by a Windsor meant a chance at being treated well, at warm beds, decent food, and health care. A few mares even stood up straighter and smoothed down their manes. Tulukki quieted a scoff, reminding herself that she didn’t want to draw any attention. She didn’t care how good life might be with a Master, being a slave still meant being a slave, and she wasn’t going to risk having her plans for escape ruined by some yuppie human who wanted the renown of owning a good pleasure harem trained in dressage.

Master Windsor held himself like an arrogant nobleman who was above things like dirt. He even held a perfumed handkerchief in one hand, meant for holding up to his nose to cover the stink of unwashed bodies. The smile on his face was a cruel one, cocky and sharp as a knife, and he barely moved as his eyes hungrily scanned over the mares who had come up to the fence. He turned his head a bit towards the stable hand, still watching the slaves, and asked in a smooth voice “Any of these ones first generation?” Tulukki’s heart skipped a beat as the stable hand began pointing out several mares and a few unicorns, including her. First generation meant he was looking for slaves that were as close to “native” blood as possible, without actually being born free. Since Tulukki’s parents had both been captured, it made her a first generation.

“Have all the girls come up to the fence.” Windsor asked, and the stable hand began barking orders. Tulukki backed further into the group, acting like she wasn’t paying attention. Some of the mares at the fence were eager at the chance to be owned by a wealthy family, let them draw the attention of this bastard.

“HEY!” the stable hand yelled. Tulukki vaguely turned her head acting like he was hard to hear. “Get over here Tulukki!” Cursing internally, she slowly made her way to the fence, staring off into the distance. “Don’t worry sir, you wouldn’t want this one anyway, she’s none too bright, and a bad temper to boot.” Tulukki shot the stable hand an angry glance before turning to nonchalantly play with her mane. She fiddled for several moments, staring at the ground near the Master’s feet, but when he didn’t move she chanced a glance up, and her heart stopped.

He was staring directly into her eyes with an intelligence that melted away any confidence she’d had about not being noticed. The smile was gone and his brow was furrowed as he continued to stare. “That one” he said, nodding towards her as he held her gaze. “Bring her out; I’d like to get a better look at her.”

The stable hand’s eyebrows shot up “How much better of a look are we talking Master Windsor?”

Master Windsor’s eyes finally broke Tulukki’s gaze and began to roam critically down her body as he answered “I’d like a stall in the barn please, so I have the space to examine her properly.”

The stable hand shook his head and grumbled an affirmative before turning on his heel “Let me go get a stall ready and grab a lead.” The stable hand made his way towards the barn, and as soon as he was out of earshot Tulukki spoke.

“Are you gonna take me to a new house?” She asked, lolling her head to the side. She let her forelock fall in front of one eye and hang there, making her look too lazy to brush it away.

The Master’s mouth twitched in a quick smirk before he said “A bit bold aren’t you? Speaking before being spoken to?” His eyes were painfully intense, staring at her with such intent it felt as if he was physically holding her in place.

“Hmmm? Oh I don’t see any point in being too polite, it’s not like I’m a performer or anything.” She snorted disdainfully and tossed her mane.

The Master didn’t answer and instead just continued to stare, making Tulukki’s skin crawl. Fear began to urge her to break playing dumb and instead back away, but she was saved by a stupid mare snapping “Well you AUGHT to be polite, Master Windsor is doing you a favor by giving you a chance, you should act appreciative!” The line made Tulukki’s blood boil and brought back some of her courage, in just enough time for the stable hand to return.

He opened the gate and motioned for Tulukki to come forward. She responded slowly, acting unimpressed by the Master or the prospect of being considered for purchase. He clipped the lead to her halter and tugged to guide her the rest of the way out of the corral.

Once out in the open grass with the warm sun on her back, it was hard to maintain the fake faulty gait she used. Tulukki wanted nothing more than to prance and stretch her legs and arms, feel the sun on her skin. Instead she let her left hock drag a bit, tried to slouch, and let her tail drag. She began to follow the stable hand towards the barn but the Master stopped walking.

“I’d like to see her gait at a run if you don’t mind.” He turned his head to look at her again, looking closely at her feet.

The stable hand shrugged and tugged Tulukki once by the lead “Go on then Tulukki. Show him your best.”

Tulukki cursed internally and aimlessly walked forward to give herself enough lead for the running exercise they were referring to. She wouldn’t be allowed to shamble when she ran, and the stable hand wore one of the controlling pendants that could magically call her collar to send shooting pain throughout her body. So, reassuring herself that a good run couldn’t outweigh a bad temperament, she opened up into a run.

She hadn’t been able to run in the sun in months. At night she had been jogging in place, or making rounds around the large room the broodmares were kept in at night. It annoyed some of the other mares but most were too tired at night to be kept awake by her light hoof falls. But running in the sun, it was pure heaven. The warm light washed across her back and relaxed her stiff muscles. The wind riffled her mane, which ran from the top of her head all the way to the tip of her tail. The soft grass massaged the bottoms of her hooves. In short, she felt a small taste of what it might be like to be free. For a few glorious moments she ran as she truly could, and in her heart she flew.

A sharp tug from the lead jerked her off balance and out of her daydream. “That’s enough, no need to show off.” The stable hand started walking towards the barn, Master Windsor walking alongside. Tulukki followed behind, trying to control her nerves. Her mind raced with fear; she shouldn’t have gone all out while running, she should have barely gone past a trot, what if he noticed how well she ran? The entire walk towards the barn she tried her best to push down the fear of being bought, and that those few moments of perceived freedom would be the closest she ever got to being truly free.

When they arrived in the barn the stable hand led them to the row of stalls used for a proper physical exam. The exam stalls in many ways mirrored exam rooms in human doctors’ offices. Tools for measuring range of motion, drawing blood, height, weight, etc. were in cupboards on one wall, along with a sink and counter. The exam table looked like any other, except for the restraints installed for uncooperative property. She stepped just to the side of the door once they entered and looked blankly at the stable hand. These rooms were usually only used to check the health of a pleasure slave or performer. A broodmare only saw the inside of these rooms if she was being bred. Tulukki had been inside one of these rooms before as a young filly that had just come of age. Right after she finished her first moon time, her first Master had had her examined and appraised as a possible performer. While she had gotten exemplary marks for physical appearance and prowess, her sour temper had cost her in temperament evaluation. As such she had been given the lowest possible performance certification and her Master had sold her as a broodmare, not wanting to lose money training a bottom of the barrel performer.

The stable hand tugged on her lead and motioned to the table, “I’ll get her cinched down and then go get our Ferrier.”

“That won’t be necessary” replied Master Windsor. “As you know I’m a fully licensed Veterinarian, I’m more qualified to examine her than your Ferrier is. I’ll be happy to take a look at her myself.”

Tulukki felt a bit of a chill go down her spine as she climbed on to the table. When she felt the straps begin to tighten around her wrists and ankles she snorted angrily out of reflex. The Master smirked at her, moving on to the next strap as he chuckled to himself, “She’s sassy this one, does her mood reflect her overall temperament?”

The stable hand sighed “Unfortunately this is well mannered compared to usual. She kicks and bites, you have to give most commands several times before she gets it, she learns slow…” He shook his head and ran his fingers through his hair “I’ll be honest there are plenty pretty things out there, you don’t need to take one this ornery, let alone take the time to actually examine her.”

Master Windsor slowly turned his head to glare at the stable hand “I will be the judge of whether I’m wasting my time or not, thank you.” The stable hand blushed a deep red and shut his mouth. The Master turned back to Tulukki and smiled. It had the look of a smile that was kind, deceivingly so. Like there was something more sinister hiding under the kindness. He began to roll on a pair of gloves and looked into her eyes. “Relax, some of this may hurt, but I’ll make it as easy as possible.” His smile sharpened and he undid the straps for her wrists. “Sit up please.”

Tulukki sat up slowly and acted like it was difficult. Once upright she slouched, until strong hands cupped her shoulders and forced her back into the proper position “I need you to sit like this, thank you.” His hands then slid down her back, poking and prodding at her spine to be sure her back was sound. Next he ran his hands over her arms, flexing her elbows and checking range of motion. Then she felt those gentle hands slide along her ribs, just under her arms, and come around to cup her breasts. He massaged gently before catching her nipples between his fingers and pinching smartly. Tulukki stiffened, sitting straight up and sucking breath between her teeth. Master Windsor chuckled, a dark sound that rumbled in his chest. He turned to look back at the stable hand “No lactation or sign of ever nursing, has she been bred yet?”

The stable hand shook his head “Not that one, everyone who’s looked at her has decided she was too… well stupid to breed, despite her rare coloring.”

The Master looked back at her, his critical eye sweeping over her from head to toe. “She has rare coloring?”

The stable hand nodded this time “She’s a pink dapple unicorn; don’t see many of them anymore.”

Master Windsor smiled, “I thought I recognized the coloring, but with all the dirt I couldn’t be sure.” He reached up and eased her back onto the table. “And the only reason she’s been passed over is due to her lack of wits?” When the stable hand nodded again the Master smirked, “Funny, because she isn’t stupid.”

Tulukki’s heart jumped in her chest and she fought the urge to spin to face him. Her mind started racing to find a way to prove him wrong. All she could manage to croak out was “Yes I am!”

The Master’s smile turned sharp again, “The hell you are, I saw your gait earlier, all lop sided, but your hooves don’t reflect wear marks to match.” He caught her chin between his thumb and forefinger and turned her head back and forth, “I saw the way you ran when you got the chance to stretch your legs, like living magic on the wind.” He let go of her chin and moved around to stand at the end of the table, she could barely turn her head well enough to see him. He chuckled again under his breath, “And if it’s true that you haven’t been bred…” He turned to look at the stable hand, “Don’t you go thinking you can jack up the price.”

The stable hand wore a look of total skepticism on his face “Master Windsor if you think she’s a rare catch you can call her that all you want, I’ve been kicked by her enough times to be happy to see her go either way.”

Tulukki was busy thinking of how many more times she’d enjoy kicking the stable hand when she felt strong cold hands between her legs. He smeared lubrication over her lips without warning. Before Tulukki had caught her breath he was sliding the cold metal speculum inside of her and stretching her open. She squeaked and then groaned in pain, the fact that she’d never been bred was true. Sure she’d been passed around a couple times, but due to her pedigree all the offenders had been careful not to leave evidence, let alone leave her with a foal. So the speculum hurt, more than she expected. She felt the Masters hot breath between her legs as he shined a light to check and be sure she didn’t have the scars associated with birthing a child. After a brief pause he nodded and withdrew the hard metal tool. Tulukki began to relax, believing the exam to be over, and jumped when she felt the master slide his fingers deep inside her and press upwards towards her belly. “She’s not been bred, and it feels like she’s rather healthy, no cysts on the ovaries and the uterus is definitely good for foaling.” Then he slid his thumb around and rested it against her clit, rubbing back and forth slowly. She squirmed and didn’t even bother resisting the snort and angry grunt that came with it. His eyes hardened and the press turned into a painful pinch. “The first thing I’ll have to teach you is to respond well to orders, both verbal and implied.” The pinch got worse, enough to make her squeak, and then he released her.

He stripped off the gloves and began to wash his hands, “Go get me the papers, I’ll take her.” After rinsing his hands he shook them off and dried them on a towel. “I know she’s expensive for a broodmare, but that’s because she isn’t a broodmare. So stop staring and go get the papers.”

The stable hand rushed out of the room, shutting the door behind him. Tulukki didn’t even notice that he’d left. She’d begun to cry. Everything that she had been working for had just fallen completely out from under her, not only would she not be able to escape, she was going to become a broodmare, the worst thing she could have become. Her quiet crying was starting to escalate as her mind spun out of control when she felt a hand on her knee.

Her eyes snapped open and she looked down to see her new Master standing between her knees, one hand resting on her knee, the other undoing his belt. “Shhh, don’t cry little one.” He began to rub up and down her knee gently as he continued to undo his fly, “I know, I know. You barely know me; you aren’t looking forward to becoming a broodmare.” He moved to bring both hands to her hips, stroking across her belly and her hip bones, “but I have good news for you.” She gasped when she felt him slide into her, he was large for a human, or perhaps she was small, she couldn’t tell which. He leaned over her as he began to pump slowly in and out of her, pushing as deep as he could go, “you aren’t going to be a broodmare, you’re going to be a pleasure slave.”

He continued to thrust into her, ignoring her tears, pushing himself to climax after a few short minutes. He had cleaned up and was back to his well put together self when the stable hand returned with her paperwork. A few short signatures and one check later, her plain barn halter was switched out for a fine leather one, the name Windsor tooled in gold on her cheek strap. She had no belongings except for a tail ring that had been her mothers; it had been her mother’s wedding ring. By the time the afternoon was out, she was shuffled into a carriage and on her way to her new home.

She didn’t even know her new Master's first name.
