One Fatefull Night (Short Story)
#1 of Macona Stories
A little short story for a concept I came up with.
Shay walked home from work on her normal route through the small town that she called home. The streetlights hummed as they let out their warm glow. The streets were quite, say for the odd car that passed her on the street. The roads 'were' quite until the sounds of footsteps began out of nowhere behind Shay. She could guess that the person exited a building or maybe came from another pathway. "Normal right?" Shay thought to herself. Normal until they stated to pick up their pace and get closer. Shay too picked up her steps but then so did the stranger behind her. The stepped sound too close now, so Shay ventured a glance behind her but as she did she ran into something or......someone. Before she could turn to look she was grabbed and tossed into a nearby alleyway, the one between a baker and a shoe store she always passed. Shay was able to catch herself from her stumble and turn to face her attackers. Two young men wearing all black, faces mostly covered, smiled at her. One took no hesitation and burst over to her with speed, grabbing her wrist, spinning her around and wrapping one hand around her throat. The man pressed something hard into her side. Shay's heart began to race with terror. The other man stayed back, close to the alleyway entrance, keeping guard.
The young man twisted Shay's wrist and brought his lips close to her ear, "Hay there pretty lady, ya know what I'm going to do to ya?" He snickered, pleased with himself.
Shay's heart raced and sweat began to form on her hands and face. Her fear began to swallow her. Like water forming at her neck and rising to her chin but that water suddenly turned to heat, a heat that originated from the center of her chest and grew till she felt like she could pass out. Shay's teeth then began to itch, as they some times did, so she brushed her tongue along their front. The heat continued to build until Shay couldn't take it any longer. The young man pulled back the hard object only to then gab it back into her side harder. This was the final trigger for Shay, the heat was too much and she passed out.
Shay woke to the sound of distant sirens. She slowly lifted her upper body up, resting on the palms of her hands. Her head felt heavy, dizzy and in such pain. It took her a moment to realize the sirens were not distant but right in front of her. Bright flashing lights indicated police cars outside the alleyway. Slowly her hearing came back to her and the sirens blared at full force. Using one hand to keep her heavy body up, Shay used the other hand to grab at her throbbing head only to see red covering her arms. A coppery taste filled her mouth so she spat out what was in it. Blood hit the ground and dripped from her lips. Shay could only guess she was in shock because none of this seemed to bother her. She sat more up right, stretching her arms and rolling her shoulders. They were firm and limber like after a hard day at the gym. Finally a policeman hurried over to Shay and wrapped a blanket around her. The blanket was soft against her skin and it wasn't until this point that Shay realized she was naked. This thought brought on the memory of what happened before Shay had passed out. Despite the policeman now trying to keep Shay turned away, she could just barely crane her neck to see two bodies laying on the ground, black cloths blending them into the shadows.
Shy sat, now fully clothed in a sweatshirt and pants, in the police station. She waited at a desk piled high with papers for the officer to return from the chief's office. She still had a blanket wrapped around her shoulders and a cup of coffee between her hands. Shay didn't wait to long before the officer returned his face was pail.
"So you mean to tell me that the injuries inflicted on those men tonight were in self defense?" He looked down at her, even when sitting down in his chair.
"Well to tell you the truth, I don't even know what happened to those men, I passed out after they attacked me", Shay looked down at her drink, her hands still as a shivering rabbit.
"Well then read this", the officer handed Shay a folder with her name on it and a case number.
Shay sat her drink where she could on the covered desk and took the folder from the officer. She opened it to find a document titled "Police report" followed by the date and the case number again. Shay read carefully.
"The bodies at the site, one male Caucasian 26 and one male Caucasian 25, were covered in lacerations in several places on the body. Deep cuts covered their arms and chest, the weapon cutting through the clothing and to the flesh. Larger wounds covered the neck region, believed to be the cause of death. The weapon is believed to be natural, thought to be from nails/claws and teeth. The witness found at the site, female Caucasian 23, was the only one in the alleyway and is believed to be the attacker. The wounds caused by "nails" are being investigated since records have not concluded that human nails could have made laceration that deep on the areas thought to have been mutilated."
Shay let the folder and contents sit in her lap. Her head stayed facing downwards and her teeth.....began to itch.....as they sometimes do.
