Chapter Six
“Going In"
By
Furry Sith Lord
I spent the next two weeks training my body and my mind in preparation of going back into the domed city. I mostly had Nu’al train me because he had a lot more experience than his brother.
Mother Abby worked more on getting me to think clearly and how not to panic if problems happened. We ended up playing the “What If” game a lot and at first I made numerous dangerous choices that led to the team getting captured or killed. The more I played, the better I got as I started to understand the rules a little better.
Torrel would get upset because as I improved, his…. did not. I started finding myself as being somewhere between Nu’al and Torrel in terms of experience. Nu’al being on top and Torrel on the bottom.
“I think we’re finally ready to go back. We need supplies anyway so Nu’al and Torrel will get the things we need while I take Peter to see Dr. Michael.” Mother Abby said to us one night as she laid out supper. The food she prepared was not as much as it was the first night but it was just as filling.
I also got used to living on a space station and how different it was than when we were on earth. We had to conserve water so washing after the training sessions was different at first. There was one bathroom that the three of us shared when washing. It just consisted of a bench and we used a special soap that did not need water to rinse off.
You would scrub it all over then after using a towel to wipe it off. It felt like you had just taken a shower without using any water at all. I was embarrassed about showering with the other two but after a few times it no longer bothered me. We have showers at school but no one really used them after gym, so showering with others was something I was not used to.
The other thing was that being in space every time we looked out a window it was dark as if it was always nighttime. I was beginning to miss seeing the sun like I used to back on earth. Something about always seeing it dark made me disoriented when trying to find out what time it was.
Nu’al was starting to teach me how to shoot larger guns like hunting rifles as I got a little better at firing handguns. I was hitting the targets better but could not hit dead center no matter how hard I tried. It seems it was no way near as easy as it seemed in the movies where the good guy could hit the center without any effort at all.
“We leave at dawn?” Torrel asked as his voice cracked a bit. It was clear he did not like getting up early, not that I can blame him.
“Of course, suga.” She replied and I saw the glum look on Torrel’s face.
“How are we gonna do this?” Nu’al asked.
“Simple. You and your brother will be in charge of getting our supplies. I’m sure you can handle that. You and I will make a list after supper to make sure you get everything we need. The boys can go to the shooting range and get some extra practice in.
I’ll personally take Peter to see the good doctor and see what we can find out. We’ll see if there are any special tests that need running.” She explained.
“Tests?!!!” I said as my own voice squeaked this time. Any tests involving needles tended to make me nervous.
“Relax, child, I’m sure there’ll be nothing to them.” Mother Abby said though it really did nor reassure me
The next morning I stood next to Torrel while we waited. Nu’al and Mother Abby were running around busy planning everything we’d need for the trip back to Dome City. Torrel yawned as we waited and I felt the same.
“Always happens like this, when we want to leave early we don’t, then we gotta wait around for hours while they plan everything. I’d love to go back to bed until they're ready to go.” Torrel whined.
“Torrel, what was your father like?” I asked, trying to make conversation.
“My dad? Pops was a great guy but I don’t really remember him. I was just a kid when he died. My bro tells me there was a raid, because they captured some of our guys. He tried to sneak in but they were waiting for him and then they attacked. Pops fought bravely but died saving our guys.
When they came back they didn’t want to follow mama so they split off and made their own group. Mama said it was because they was too ashamed of what happened. We are the first, and best, of the groups. That’s why we’re called Space Flight Alpha!” Torrel explained.
“What are the other groups called?”
“Um… Deep Sea Beta, Hidden Mountain Charlie, and lastly Forest Thorn Delta. We just call each other The Alphas, Betas, Charlies, and the Deltas. It’s just easier that way.”
“So we’re Space Flight b ecause we’re in outer space, right?!” I asked. Torrel nodded as he yawn again. “Then The etas are underwater?”
“Yeah and the Charlies are hold up in a mountain. and The Deltas, the stupid ones, are hiding in a forest.” Torrel replied impatiently.
“Wait, why are they stupid?”
“Cuz doofus, the forest has no protection from the radiation. I’m surprised they’re not all dead yet.” Torrel said.
“So how big are the other groups?” I asked.
“Alright boys, time to go.” Mother Abby announced and we entered the spacecraft. We entered and Torrel was calling shotgun. Neither Nu’al nor myself objected because neither of us cared if he wanted the front seat.
I didn’t want to see us approaching the earth because it would make me feel like I was falling. Nu’al seemed to be meditating or trying to psych himself up so I left him alone. The ship lifted up slightly and I saw a hatch open before I looked away.
The ship jerked forwards and I ignored Torrel muttering ‘Cool’ as we descended towards the planet. I did everything I could to look elsewhere than At the viewscreen. I looked at Nu’al as I saw him muttering to himself. I had no idea what he was saying if it was a prayer or going over what he needed to do when we landed.
I felt our descent slow until we stopped and the whole ship transformed from a spaceship back into a helicopter. I felt a little better and turned to watch the front as we soared through the air. It felt good to not be falling like we were.
The helicopter landed some distance away from the dome and we were all handed a needle filled with an amber colored liquid. Nu’al and Mother Abby injected themselves easily into their arms but Torrel and myself were queasy about it. Nu’al rushed over and grabbed ours and roughly stuck them in our arms and gave us the dose. It hurt like hell but we felt better once it was over.
“Come on,” Nu’al shouted at Torrell then he turned towards us. “We’ll meet you at the rendezvous point. Call if you need help.”
“Yes son,” Mother Abby retorted. “Come on Peter.” She said grumpily as she took my arm and we head off towards I guess where Dr. Michael had his office. I was glad she had not grabbed the arm I just got the shot in because it was still hurting me but not as much as when I first got it.
“You let me do the talking.” She whispered to me as we approached the entrance to Dome City. There was a simple checkpoint in place and I saw a couple of guards walking around. One seemed more interested in his cell phone than actually checking for intruders.
They stopped and stared at us as we approached looking perplexed that anyone would be outside the dome.
“What’s this?!” One of them said and his voice seemed to carry a bit of mockery in it.
“Hello Ruddy,” Mother Abby said as she released me and went over to hug the guard. “Charles,” She said to the other one and he simply nodded at her.
“Who’s the pipsqueak?” Ruddy asked as he looked at Peter.
“My new assistant. He was in my class of New Emergence and joined me in my hunt for new species.” She explained Ruddy laughed and turned to face Peter
“Find any new lifeforms out there?”
“No, I thought I saw something but it was just some rocks.” Peter lied hoping it would be believable. Ruddy began to laugh even louder now and Peter made himself blush slightly to keep up the lie.
“It’s OK, suga. It could still take years before evolution catches up and new species emerge. It’s just important to try and see IF we can find anything but more than likely we won’t… yet.” Mother Abby explained to me as if Peter was a student in her class. He had no idea if she was a real teacher or was it just a ruse to throw off the guards. He made a mental note to ask her later.
“IF that evolution stuff were actually true and we evolved from monkeys then why are there still monkeys?!!!” Ruddy asked as he started to laugh.
“What monkeys? They were all killed off by human idiots trying to kill off the planet.” Mother Aby countered. Ruddy immediately shut up. “Let’s go Peter,” She said and grabbed his arm as she angrily stormed off. Ruddy was trying to think of a clever comeback but it was too late. They had already entered the dome past the checkpoint.
