Chapter Seven

“Rebel Ways"

By

We walked through Dome City as if it was like any other city I had been in. I had imagined that there would be fascist propaganda all around like in video games where they tell you to obey. None of that was here and it seemed like a perfectly normal city.

Mother Abby kept whispering commands to me like look sharp and stay focussed. This seemed odd to me because I was as I tried to get familiar with everything around me.

“Is this place really that bad? It seems like a normal city to me." I asked as quietly as I could.

“Sometimes you need to look below the surface to see the real face of something." Mother Abby remarked. I thought about what she had said as we continued walking and found her statement to be an interesting platitude.

On the one hand, it seemed profound what she said and I definitely agreed with it. On the other hand, it could also be self-defeating because the same could be applied to her and the other resistance members. Maybe I had been too trusting to trust them like I have.

For all I knew the resistance could be a bunch of lawless criminals that were attempting to overthrow a perfectly peaceful society. This made me realize the only people that had weapons seemed to be the resistance group, and the police.

Was I being too suspicious? Or not suspicious enough! The trouble was that I had no idea who to trust or why I was even here to begin with. I realized that even being surrounded by people I was still alone.

We finally arrived and Doctor Michael's lab looked like the science lab at my school. It had rows of tables lined up that were empty on top and several chairs grouped together. I saw some empty beakers and tubing sitting in a cardboard box in the corner.

Dr. Mike had his back to us as he stood in front of a blackboard with what looked like an extremely complicated math problem on it. He was muttering something to himself as he studied the board.

“Good evening, Doctor." Mother Abby said. Her voice was calm and soft yet had an element of being forceful mixed in. Dr. Mike seemed to have not heard her till she reached out to touch his shoulder. He turned and absently saw her then muttered “Mother Abby is here," and it took a moment for him to realize it, then snapped out of an almost trance like state.

“What?!... Oh, Mother Abby, this is a surprise. I can't believe you'd risk coming here to visit little old me." He remarked.

“I'm here on urgent matters," She said and Dr. Mike pulled out a set of chairs and they sat down to discuss…me! Mother Abby explained how they were monitoring radio broadcasts when an alert warned of an intruder found outside the Dome.

She went on to discuss that two police officers had found a young boy inside an abandoned house. Dr. Mike interrupted here saying he had been made aware of the situation after some blood samples wer sent to him because of the extraordinary nature of the samples.

“The blood I examined is the purest and cleanest that I've ever seen. Nolt a single person in all of Dome City had blood like this." He explained.

“That's why we're here. This young man is that boy and we need to find out what happened. He said he went to bed inside the house he was found in, and it was as perfectly normal like how life used to be before The Great Purge.

He wakes up and everything is like a nightmare and he has no memories of The Great Purge or Dom City or anything. Normally I'd chalk it up to the radiation affecting his mind but like you said, his blood is relatively untouched." Mother Abby said as Dr. Mike rose and opened a draw searching around for something inside while she continued.

“Any ideas how all this happened?" She concluded. Dr. Mike took several instruments out of the draw and arranged them on the desk. I had no idea what they did or were used for but suddenly I felt like I was the prime selection in a butcher shop.

“I'll need to run extensive tests. I'll need to get better samples before I can theorize any possibilities. If you will excuse us, Mother Abby. I need our young friend to strip down as I take the samples and I'm sure he might like a little more privacy." Mr. Mike said. I blushed realizing He wanted me to be naked.

“Oh you men folk are always acting like fools. I've been a mother and you both ain't got nothin' I ain't seen before. Shoot white men always get upset about their size when a woman doesn't care how big or small it is, as long as you know how to use it." She ranted. I heard Mr. Mike sigh as he shook his head as I continued to blush.

“Well as long as you're OK will all the blood then enjoy the show," He said as Mother Abby turned almost a pale shad as she quickly got up.

“I'll be out there if you need me." She replied then exited the room.

“I've known her for a long time and I wouldn't want her staring at me, so I don't want the same. Don't worry about the blood talk. It was just to get rid of her." He explained to me and it helped me breathe. The one thing he forgot to mention was that the tests would be painful.

Nu'al and Torrel walked casually down the street making sure the handguns they carried were concealed. They had both done this several times so they knew the drill. Since being a rebel doesn't pay you anything they had to be careful in stealing the items they needed.

Torrel was caught once but his brother had a plan to make it look like it was his brother acting like a fool. He would pretend to give his brother a spank and Torrel was good at making fake tears fall. Usually that was enough to satisfy them when he returned the items.

Torrel had gotten better at thieving, which made getting supplies easier. Nu'al was standing around the corner as he let Torrel work his magic.

“Mom?..... MOM!!!!" Torrel called out and a merchant next to a table looked around to see if he could help. Torrel gave him a vague description of what Mother Abby looked like and as the merchant looked around Torrel took some of his wares and pocketed them. No one seemed the wiser and once he had collected what they needed, Nu'al arrived to find his lost baby brother.

They moved on to a couple of others until the remaining items they needed were in stores. This was trickier because of the security cameras used.

Peter groaned as he zipped up his jeans and he tried to ignore the pain he felt from the samples taken. He must have been biopsied a dozen times in different places while Dr. Mike tried keeping him distracted by asking about what it was like where he originally lived.

How long had it gone on? Seconds, minutes, or what felt like an eternity.

“You can get dressed now," Dr. Mike had said and Peter was not sure if he was serious or another ploy to try and keep him distracted. His body hurt all over and he guessed it must be what it would feel like to be hit by a truck.

“That wasn't so bad now was it?" Dr. Mike continued but Peter had to bite his tongue to stop from telling him how he really felt. Peter noticed that some gauze pads were covered in blood as they were thrown into the trash with the latex gloves that Dr. Mike had worn.

Peter didn't even know that he was bleeding and mostly what he thought was sweat dripping from him must be blood. This now made him feel lightheaded as he thought about it.

“You OK Suga?" Mother Abby asked and Peter had not even realized she had returned.

“I hope you know a few tricks to get blood out of clothing. He bled more than I thought he would." Dr. Mike replied.

“Uh huh," She said as she eyed him skeptically.

“He'll be sore for a few days then he'll become perfectly normal. The results, I'm afraid, will take longer to come in. I don't have a whole team of scientists to help me which will make things difficult."

“He looks like he can barely walk. Can you give us some more time before you sound the alarm?!" She asked and Peter suddenly realized that Dr. Mike was going to turn them in!

“You know I can't do that. You're both on camera coming here so how can I explain that I let wanted criminals go free?"

“If we're captured, I doubt your research will go anywhere other than into the hands of better scientists. Plus, how are you going to explain you delayed in alerting the authorities so you could collect samples?" Mother Abby retorted.

“Well I…"

“Uh huh, I think you can hold off while you think of a better excuse. Come on Peter." Mother Abby said as she pulled on Peter's arm to get him to move faster. He began to moan in pain the faster he tried to move but she just shushed him and told him to move faster

“I know you're hurting but that won't hold him off for long." She whispered. He could barely open my mouth before a loud alarm sounded.

“See, told ya." She remarked as they tried to shuffle faster. He pushed with everything he had but the pain was unbearable.

“I hope the others are having better luck," Peter remarked and for a moment he thought she had ignored his comment.

“I just hope they've had enough time to get everything we need.

“So was all this in vain?" Peter asked.

“No honey, just the opposite. Mr. Mike is an ass b ut he is as good as his word he'll tell us what he can about those samples and maybe we'll have a better idea what's going on." Mother Abby said, trying to reassure Peter. He had his doubts because if Dr. Mike was on the up and up, then why was he trying to get them captured?
