Clara crept through the college library, keeping her head down and trying to avoid the preppy, giggly voices of the more popular students that were cruising for guys. If they saw her, she doubted that they would let her get away with so little as a tease this time. They were known to be utterly ruthless when they were bored, and considering the sort of target she offered – someone poorer, someone here on a community scholarship, a nerd, a rumored lesbian (not that anyone had any proof of that) – they would latch onto that with all due speed and chase her out of the building.

The sound of their voices faded as she walked into the history section of the library, and she hoped that was the last that she’d hear of them before she left. She shook her head, brushing dark locks of hair out of her face as she bent over the Egyptian history section.

“Ancient mythology…no…no…no…”

Clara shook her head as she fumbled through the tomes, half-pulling several of them out to see what they were past the names on the spine before pushing them back. It took several minutes that got more and more frantic before she finally found one that looked right.

She pulled the black and gold book out, turning it around before smiling at the cover. A great ankh took up most of the front, with the title Egyptian Histories, Literatures, and the Puzzles of the Pyramid Folk naming it.

“Biased but perfect,” she muttered, nodding as she tucked it under her arm again.

Hurrying back through the library with all due speed, she was caught off-guard by the populars. She jerked herself back in the aisle as they passed by, their voices just loud enough to make out.

“Ugh. There’s never any hot guys in here.”

“What do you expect? They’re practicing, not studying.”

“Ugh, I know. But the cheerleaders are all over them.”

“Let’s get out of here before we catch the nerd.”

“Or find one of those butch lesbos or something. Ugh.”

“Ugh, yeah. So gross.”

Clara kept herself pinned to the wall, her heart in her throat for a moment or three before the three immaculate other women walked out of earshot. She sagged down slowly, pushing her hair back out of her face before moving just as quickly to the check-out desk. The librarian barely looked up, tapping a few buttons on her end before scanning the book and passing it back.

“Three weeks.”

“I know, I know,” Clara muttered, bundling the book up and running. “Thanks!”

Now, if she could just hurry, she could catch the bus and get back to her apartment before anything else could happen. She had a lot of reading to do and a lot of work after that if she wanted to set things up properly for her group this weekend.

The bus dropped her off a half-block from the apartment, and the walk back to the front door went without a hitch. She was just unlocking her front door when her cell buzzed in her back pocket.

“Ah, ah!”

Clara had to juggle her key, which she had been in the process of reaching for the lock with, as she grabbed for her back pocket. She barely caught the key before it could go over the side, and jammed it into the lock before looking down at her phone. A call from Connie, one of the group. She tapped the screen and put it to her ear.

“Hey, what’s up?”

“You got the book?”

“Yeah, yeah, I got it. What, did you think I wasn’t going to take it seriously?”

“I just thought that it might be checked out or something. Geez. Calm down.”

“Sorry.”

She sighed as she stepped inside, the mustiness of the old apartment slapping her across the face as it always did. There was no getting away from the fact that it was old, that the carpet needed replacing, that everything was just…dank. It wasn’t the place of a promising young woman, that was for sure.

Then again, she supposed she wasn’t that promising. A glance at the hallway mirror showed someone that was, at best, average in so many ways. Longer dark hair that needed either a curling iron or a straightener, rather than the mess that it had become; small breasts that were neither small enough to look cute nor big enough to look sexy; hips that were boxy rather than feminine and soft; it was all a mess, and she covered it up in a t-shirt that didn’t do much for her figure and a pair of sweat pants that took away any shape that she had, taking her to a bland neutral.

All in all, just a mess, but at least she was herself. At least, that was what she said every day.

She sat down as Connie continued.

“So, we’re still on for the game later, right?”

“Yeah, yeah, we’re still on. Just going to read this to make sure that I have it right for when we start.”

“You and that need to be authentic.”

“Hey, I just try and make it good.”

“Nerd.”

“You know it.” Clara smiled. It was different hearing it from someone else in the D&D group. Fairer. Gentler. Nicer. “You going to be there?”

“For an Egypt campaign? You know it. See you Sunday.”

Click.

Tossing the phone to the side of the couch, she pulled her book out of her backpack and laid it out over her knee. The text was large-print, a little easier to read than it needed to be, and she smiled as she started tracing the pictures of the old structures of the sand kingdom. They were just as familiar to her as they had been when she was a kid, if a little more detailed in a college-level book.

It had always been a small obsession, Egypt. There were many things out there that were just so different to her, so fascinating compared to the western world. It was always so magical, and more than anything, she wanted to see what it would be like to live there.

Of course, that was impossible, but the next best thing was to roleplay being there. That was why she wanted to run a campaign set in the ancient kingdom, and that was why she had the book in the first place. She wanted it to be as authentic as possible, from the culture down to the architecture, and, of course…

She turned the page, and there was the legendary sphinx. The source of riddles and wonders, first photographed and then drawn with a guess as to what it once looked like. It was beautiful, just like everything else in the sandy land. She imagined that, once, it had been even more beautiful.

There was, however, something interesting. Around the picture – but before the list of riddles that were associated with the sphinx – there were a series of hieroglyphs and other old script. She didn’t recognize most of them, but there were a few that didn’t quite look right. After a moment’s thought, she realized that the letters must have been damaged before they were photographed and scanned in.

Clara narrowed her eyes. She hated seeing something broken up and passed off as original. She fumbled through her pockets until she found a pen, and without a second thought, took it to the borrowed book. One scratch there, a line there, and then –

“Ow!”

She yelped as she felt a shock run right up the pen and into her fingers, so sharp and hot that it actually made her drop the writing implement. As it rolled away, the book glowed, and Clara had two seconds to realize that she might have just done something really stupid before the light jumped from the book to her in a bolt of lightning.

“NNNGH!”

Falling backwards over the couch, she slammed into the floor with a thump, the book going flying somewhere else in the apartment. She groaned, rolling onto all fours even as the tingling heat ran through her body, traveling out from her chest in throbbing waves that left her aching with every breath.

She reached out for the couch, fumbling for a grip on something, anything, only for her fingers to catch and –

RIIIIP!

Clara froze, looking up. The back of the couch was ripped in four thick lines running down, like a cat from hell had come through her apartment and taken exception with her furniture. It was impossible, except –

She looked down at her hand. Her fingernails were dark, and growing, a sharp point already sticking out over her fingertips. Along the back of her hand, a dull pink-purple fuzz was sprouting, not enough to hide her skin, but enough for her to see the color difference and leave her shaking as it spread up her arm.

Bringing her other hand up, she saw that the same thing was happening to it, fur rising from her flesh and rising up her arm. She panted as she dragged herself up, ripping through the couch even further as she did. She stumbled against the wall behind her, holding her arms out and panting for breath as her heart raced.

“Fuck…fuck…what…what is…”

She couldn’t catch her breath. It was already gone, and she was hyperventilating to try and get it back. The heat was rising, pulsing, throbbing, aching, and every time that it passed through her, the fur spread further, and so did other things. Her slight chub in the middle passed, sucked in and disappearing before her eyes, and as it did, she felt her muscles tighten. It was a momentary ache, but for that moment, it felt like she had just sat down to do a few hundred sit-ups in a row.

As the muscle ache faded, she felt something else, something pushing out against her skin. Huffing for air, she yanked her shirt off, throwing it back across the room as she looked down –

“Oh…my…god…”

Her stomach wasn’t just muscled, wasn’t just furred, but was expanding. Several rows of fat were popping out from just under her breasts, with each one slightly smaller the further down her body it went. She could hardly believe what she was looking at, but it was like…like she was getting multiple breasts.

As she ran her hands over the growing bulges, she hissed as she found several sensitive spots, and when she pulled her hands back, it was easy to confirm. Nipples. They were new layers of breasts.

But…

But…

She looked back at the book, then ran for the bathroom. As soon as she whipped herself around the corner and stared at her reflection, her eyes went wide.

She was skinny, very skinny, and that skinniness was exactly like the skinniness of the sphinx. It was getting worse, too, with two large ears slowly creeping up the sides of her head and making them look more and more feline, and as that happened, so too did the tingling run down her spine and reach the base, pushing out and out, making her pants feel too tight and too loose all at the same time.

“Ah…this…this is…”

She groaned, the sound turning into something of a meow as she arched her back. Her tail ripped through not just her pants, but her underwear as well, sending both of the looser garments tumbling to the floor. Standing there in nothing but her bra, she stared at the thing that she was becoming.

Long.

Lanky.

Slender.

Feline.

Her tail was wire-thin and growing longer by the second, whip-like and so very eerie. Her hands and feet were padded rather than fleshed, and she could feel the claws on both as she stepped back from the mirror. Her breasts – the original pair – had grown bigger, heftier, more ‘fertile’ in shape, and the other pairs descended in size, with the second to bottom being nearly the size the original had been. They were heavy, but there was a powerful strength in her fore, something that was so different to what she was used to.

It was…

It was breathtaking, and she couldn’t find the words for it.

Her ears pushed up over her head, and her hair ran down over her face, a small reminder of her humanity. She barely managed a wheezed as she brought her clawed fingers behind her back, popping her bra and letting her newly enlarged breasts fall into the open. She hissed, shaking her head in disbelief.

And yet, even as she stared at herself, something else bubbled up from the back of her mind, something that she had never really thought of before.

Riddles.

Puzzles.

Logic.

Her mind was racing faster than it ever had before. Not in any class or any game had it moved so quickly. She panted as she stumbled forward, resting her fingers against the countertop. A spell had changed her. She had…she had become a sphinx by incidentally creating the spell that had been sealed away.

And now…

Now she wasn’t just Clara. She was Clara, plus all the knowledge and power of a sphinx.

If she had wanted authenticity, it looked like she had it.
