Four months had passed since Wilken's arrival and he'd experienced numerous human holidays. From Halloween to Christmas, the fox was delighted to participate in Hakeem's cultural festivities. For the first holiday, the vulpine was able to convince Hakeem to attend a costume party held at the nearest town square. The humans were delighted to see the fox dressed as the old folk hero Robinhood. He hadn't even needed to demonstrate his archery skills before he received the grand prize. As long as none of the humans came close to the fox's personal space, everyone was convinced of his costume attire.
As for Thanksgiving, the duo had spent it with Hannah and Jake. Hakeem hadn't been enthusiastic to visit his own family, especially with the idea of leaving the fox behind. And when Hanna and Jake learned of their neighbors' availability, they had invited the duo over. To the fox's perspective, it was akin to a harvest festival but on a much smaller scale. Instead of an entire community with hundreds, there were only the four of them. Still, he found the meals to be extravagant and the hosts' hearts to be the most generous. Even when he later became ill from overeating, the holiday had been a culinary delight.
And the most recent festivity he celebrated was Christmas with the González family. A week before the holiday began, the family were aware of Hakeem and Wilken's lack of travel plans. They had opened their doors for the duo to join and partake in their gathering. Although Wilken was exposed to Mr. González's curious extended family, everyone had still treated him with the utmost respect. The vulpine was delighted when even the small man cub Diego kept his true nature a secret from the rest of the other children.
There was only one holiday left that the fox looked forward to. New Year's day was something the vulpine wanted to set up on his own. He used his niche yet notable social media presence to invite a few online friends over for the celebration. There were animal enthusiasts online that called themselves furries who became enamored with Wilken's social media presence. With the permission and due diligence of Hakeem, Wilken had invited a few guests over to host the event. Though when the eventual date came, the fox had one last guest he sought to invite. He had planned to ask his companion after lunch. And in the morning of New Year's Eve, the vulpine made the interior and exterior of the house immaculate.
By early mid-afternoon, Hakeem finally awoke to hear the fox already in the kitchen. Wilken had slipped into his stretchy cargo shorts and pink tank top while he cooked. The human companion casually greeted Wilken with a hug from behind and a kiss on the cheek. Wilken's fox tail excitedly twitched as he prepared the finishing touches to their lunch. Some leftover mac and cheese with chicken and waffles were made for Hakeem. And a hearty plate of fried chicken and reheated black beans was prepared for the fox. The human expressed a raised eyebrow before he sat down and quietly ate his meal. And it had been midway through both of their respective meals when Hakeem spoke up.
“Seems someone's excited today?" Hakeem asked.
“Of course! I never celebrated this fine holiday before! And to set up an event all by myself is exhilarating! I cannot thank you enough for letting me do this!" Wilken beamed.
“Well, so long as everybody's chill and respects my home, this'll be alright."
“Hopefully! I mean, they are my friends. This is just the first time meeting them in person!"
“Now wait a minute, just because they may be friendly online doesn't mean they should automatically be your friend. Still gotta be careful about trusting people too fast."
“But I've chatted with all of them and you told me that they seemed alright. So, they should be decent people at the very least?"
“I know, but still you gotta be careful all the same. I just don't want anyone pulling a Mrs. Cunningham on you," Hakeem chuckled.
“Yeah… about that. There was a favor I seek from you, dear." Wilken's ears folded down.
“If it concerns that woman, then I don't want to hear it."
“Please, don't make such a rash decision. At least allow me to make a plea for my proposal!"
Hakeem sighed, “So what, you think pullin' out all the stops for lunch was gonna convince me to let that crazy bitch crawl up in my house? Sorry but there's nothin' left to discuss!"
“But she has been acting a lot better since that fateful day! I have been polite and held my tongue about inviting her to all of the other holiday celebrations. So, why can't you make this one exception for something that I planned for?"
“Because she's a nut job that's why! You may think she's a nice woman, but have you seen the ignorant bullshit she posts online? How would your guests feel about havin' someone over like that here? Shit, I mean she nearly got yo ass killed!"
Wilken crossed his arms, “Hakeem, that incident is unfair to keep bringing up. It was my choice to forgive her for the transgression against me, not yours. And how could you disregard the plethora of gifts she bestowed to us over the last few months as a sign of good will?"
“It's gonna take a lot more than cookies and treats to get back on my neutral side. Let alone my good side."
“Then what more can be done to resolve this?"
“Honestly, I don't know yet. But more importantly, you gotta think of everyone else comin' over here. Do you really think someone like her will be a good fit?"
“I think so. But most of all, I'm worried for her. She's all alone in that house and only converses with me. All I am requesting from you is that I may extend an invitation to her just this once. She may not even be able to come over for this occasion. It's okay if you don't want to be her friend. But, I simply ask that you trust in my judgment. Can you do that for me, please dear?"
Hakeem became silent and sat back to stroke his chin. His face expressed turmoil over the decision whether or not he could tolerate Mrs. Cunningham for a few hours. Though when he glanced up at Wilken's pleading fox face, he sighed through his nose.
Hakeem spoke, “Are you absolutely sure you want to do this? And accept the potential consequences?"
*Wilken nodded, “I do." *
“Alright, fine. But she'll be your responsibility. And when I say I want her out, she's out. Got it?"
“Thank you, dear! I promise, this celebration will be a success!"
Wilken walked over and gave his human companion a firm hug. His fluffy face buried itself into Hakeem's neck before he left a small peck. The vulpine was mindful that licks were more sensitive against Hakeem's skin and had learned to opt for kisses instead. Hakeem gave a half-hearted smile and reached over to rub the back of his head.
*“We'll see, for now just make sure the place is ready for your friends, alright?" *
“Of course! I'll make sure everyone is respectful of our space. I promise."
The vulpine skipped to the kitchen to clean up the pots and pans before finishing with other parts of the house. Once the kitchen was clean, the fox prepared the firepit outside so that he could cook for his guests. As the afternoon sun gradually settled to dusk, that was when the vulpine made his trip towards Mrs. Cunningham's house. He had thirty minutes to spare before the first guests planned to arrive by car. He'd become accustomed to traveling to and from every neighbor's house that for him, it was simply a few minutes' walk. So much so that he began to leave his own well-worn trails to follow. And when the familiar red brick house came into view, his fox tail raised with excitement.
He approached the front of the house and spotted Mrs. Cunningham's truck in the driveway. With the likelihood of her being home, he gave a few solid knocks at the door and awaited patiently. Within moments, the familiar small-statured woman came out and greeted him with a bright smile.
“Wilken! So good to see ya!" She commented.
When her arms reached out to invite the fox for a hug, the vulpine eagerly accepted it. His long fluffy tail twitched from side to side as he held the old woman close to his body. When he stepped back, she glanced up at him, meeting his gaze.
“So, what brings ya over? Need somethin'?" Mrs. Cunningham asked.
“Well, I have come bearing great news!"
“What would that be?"
“I, Wilken, formally invite you to my home for a New Years celebration tonight! I want to spend the holiday with you and be your host!"
“Oh, that's… surprising," Mrs. Cunningham said with a perplexed expression, “And is Hakeem okay with havin' me over?"
“But of course. I've discussed it with him and he's allowed me to invite you over. I know the news is sudden and I apologize if you had other plans for tonight. Still, I wanted to extend an invitation to you just in case."
“I see," Mrs. Cunningham nodded, “So, is anyone else comin' over? You know, Hanna and Jake, maybe the González family?"
“Well… they unfortunately had other plans. Hanna and Jake had already departed to a festival of some kind out in the Nevada desert. And the González's aren't in the area either. However, I did invite a few furry friends over though!"
“Wait, when you say furry friends. Do you mean your own kind? Or people that dress up as animals and have those furry orgy things?"
Wilken laughed, “ Mrs. Cunningham, we're not throwing a fertility festival. That isn't till the following Spring! Plus, I don't think Hakeem would ever let me host one of those."
“Haha, yeah glad it wasn't somethin' like that," She nervously chuckled along.
The fox collected himself, “To answer your curiosities, the people you're referring to are the latter and not the former. I still haven't met any of my kind yet. But the people I've befriended online are good people. It's only a small gathering of less than a dozen. There will be food, drinks, an array of fireworks, everything needed for a New Years celebration. Your company would be a welcome addition."
“I don't know, I'm usually not that good around new people. Especially young people. I would feel a little out of place for something like that to tell you the truth. I'm sure they wouldn't want an ol' hag ruining their fun," Mrs. Cunningham exhaled deeply through her nose.
“I'm sorry that I hadn't accounted for your personal feelings in the matter before springing this invitation to you."
“No, no it's okay. It's your party. You deserve to have fun with new people."
“I know. Honestly, it would mean a lot to me to have your company. Even if it's just for an hour. I implore you to consider as the invitation is always open to you should you decide to come. Is that okay?"
Mrs. Cunningham stayed quiet with her arms folded. It was clear from the fox's reading that his other human companion had been conflicted. Over the few months he had known her, Wilken had been able to read human emotions better. The subtle movements and nuances in their eyebrows, cheeks, and lips had all been things he'd learned from scratch. And the vulpine held his breath as the woman's face continued to convey a deep sense of contemplation.
Mrs. Cunningham finally spoke, “Let me see if I can find a few things first. Other than that, are you fine if I come a little later?"
“But of course, whatever helps you feel comfortable in attending."
“Good, then I'll swing by in a few hours. Before the fireworks start anyway. Thank you for inviting me. Is there anything I should bring?"
“Your attendance will be enough. Thank you again, Mrs. Cunningham!"
The vulpine excited state couldn't be contained as he leaped forward for another hug. He released a satisfied fox chirp from his throat as his tail twitched with excitement. His outward affection made the old woman laugh as she softly patted his fluffy backside.
“Okay, okay! Anyway, you should probably get back in case your guests show up. Have a fun time for me before I get there, got it?"
“Understood, I hope to see you at the party. With that, take care!"
Wilken gave a friendly wave as he departed from the porch. To have two familiar faces to turn to would put the fox at ease as a sense of optimism coursed through his body. He skipped back towards Hakeem's house and already spotted a foreign car in the driveway. The blue car was dwarfed in comparison to Hakeem's massive work truck, which had been parked dead center of the driveway. The car's exterior was adorned with a plethora of furry stickers, some of which Wilken had recognized from various furry websites. Two familiar figures emerged from the vehicle. One was a tall and lanky human male with striking blue hair. Wilken assumed it to be Wolflord, as his blue hair had been a subtle signifier of the canine character he displayed himself online.
The second familiar figure had been a woman around Mrs. Cunningham's height but with a slightly larger build. Even without the veterinarian surgical gowns she normally wore in her online posts, the woman's intricate braided hair and hoop earrings were a dead giveaway. Jade Sunfire portrayed herself as an eastern dragon online, but the fox had seen enough photographs of the woman to recognize her. As he came closer into view, the duo spotted Wilken and were visibly excited. Jade settled down a few square boxes on the roof of her car before she rushed towards Wilken with open arms. The fox met her halfway and reached out to tightly embrace her!
“Jade! It's so good to see you!" Wilken chirped.
“Ahh! I can't believe you're already suited up! You're so adorable and soft!" Jade squealed.
Just as Jade had released her hug from the tall vulpine, Wolflord set aside his large tote before he walked over to give Wilken a tight embrace. The fox's tail fully wagged on its own from side to side as he savored and enjoyed the friendly hugs. Already, he became accustomed and enjoyed the furries' more intimate greeting.
“It's so good to see you in the fur, Wilken. Your suit has got to be one of the best ones I've ever seen!" Wolflord smiled.
Wilken rubbed the back of his head as his ears folded. While he initially wanted to blurt out his true nature, he wisely hesitated. Hakeem had made it clear that Wilken shouldn't correct other human's assumptions when it comes to his fox-like nature. For now, he accepted their compliments and hadn't challenged them.
“Thanks. And also, welcome to my humble home. My huma- I mean my roommate Hakeem should already be inside. Would you guys like for me to help you carry your belongings?" Wilken asked.
“Sure, I brought a lot of pizzas. And I mean, A LOT! If you can carry those, I'll gather everythin' else!" Jade smiled.
“Yeah, and could you also show us where I can stash my fursuit tote box? Maybe a place I can change into later?" Wolflord chimed in.
“Of course! Leave it to me!" Wilken smiled.
He utilized his skills to carry the heavy pizza boxes inside and guided the two. Once the food was settled down, the fox proceeded to show them towards the empty guest room. Because he had long moved into Hakeem's room after his month-long stay, the guest room was left empty. Wilken had decided to use the space as storage for the guests' fursuit and a place for them to change.
Wolflord seemed satisfied with the accommodations. And just when they finished, Wilken's sensitive fox ears heard more cars slowly pulling into the gravelly driveway. He made his way to the front entrance and greeted more guests inside. Of the ten who came, only three had brought their fursuits with them. The fox used his superior strength to help with the partygoers' belongings and allowed them to settle in as quickly as possible.
Besides Wolflord and Jade, the only ones he knew intimately were Yasuke the Lion and Stoat Scout. Everyone else, they were either close friends or associates who came along with the main four that Wilken knew of. To the fox's relief, Hakeem seemed sociable with some of them who were in attendance. The human had given a casual head nod to Jade and Yasuke when the two spotted one another.
Wilken observed from afar as Hakeem engaged with them separately in casual conversation. And from what the fox could eavesdrop, it was more engaged chatter than he had initially expected. They seemed to have a passing cultural familiarity despite mostly being strangers. While Hakeem always had the option to retreat to his room, he instead stayed and chatted with them. The sight of which made the fox smile from ear to ear. When Hakeem finally had a moment to himself, Wilken sought his attention and chimed in.
“I take it you made some new friends?" Wilken teased.
“Friends, nah? Still gettin' to know them. But they seem alright." Hakeem shrugged.
“What do you mean? I saw you talking to them. Compared to our neighbors, you looked more relaxed conversing with Yasuke and Jade."
“Yeah, that's cuz we share a common upbringing. Doesn't mean we're attached at the hip just yet, we barely met. Just feelin' out the vibe you know?"
Wilken nodded attentively, “Very well. Still, it was just nice seeing you getting to know them. I think I'm going to get some pizza before I start the fire pit in the backyard. Do you want anything?"
Hakeem shook his head, “Not at the moment. Though remember, only take a few slices. I don't wanna see you keeled over from eating too much pizza, got it?"
Wilken nodded, “Understood!"
He then darted for the table that had all manner of snacks and treats displayed for everyone. When he lifted up one of the box flaps, a large torrent of steam washed over his face. His mouth salivated as he could taste the spices from the aroma alone. He grabbed a few stretchy slices with a napkin and exited through the back screen door. The fox was still self-conscious when it came to consuming food around other humans. After his first experience eating in front of the neighbors, Wilken was hyper aware that people naturally formed suspicious thoughts about how a supposed person in a fursuit could convincingly eat and drink.
He quietly ate his slices in the backyard and savored the taste. The rich salt and cheesy flavors spoke to the fox's very core when it came to his primal hunger. Human food was still very much a delicacy that the vulpine reveled in with every opportunity. When he finished the second slice, he licked the grease off his fingertips and claws with a satisfied sigh. Afterwards, he heard the back screen door open as Stoat Scout came from behind.
“Sorry, didn't mean to startle you. Couldn't help but notice you only took a few slices and left. How are you able to eat while wearing all of that anyway?" The smaller human glanced up to him.
Wilken dusted the crumbs off his muzzle, “I… uh… well I eat it very carefully. It's a process to take the head off so I eat with it on. Tends to be easy to clean up after the fact."
“I see," Stoat Scout nodded his head, “Also there was something I've always wanted to ask you. But I didn't want to say it in front of the others."
Wilken swallowed, “And what would that be?"
“Well, from the looks of your shorts I couldn't help but notice you have something extra down there. I just gotta know, knot or human style?"
“I beg your pardon?"
“You know, sense you're wearing a special fursuit, I was wondering about what you have down there? Is it just something like a fake sheath? Or some kind of zipper situation going on?"
“Are you asking about my genitals?" Wilken asked aloud.
Stoat Scout motioned a finger over his lips, “Please, keep it down!"
“Oh, sorry." Wilken whispered.
“But yeah, I was just curious is all. Sorry if it's a sensitive subject."
“You're alright. Truth be told, I don't particularly enjoy wearing clothes. But my roommate told me it would be more polite to wear them when company is over."
“Right, I understand. I can imagine how cool your entire suit looks in its natural form. You wouldn't happen to have any photos of yourself in your murrsuit would you?"
“The thought hasn't crossed my mind."
“Ah… well do you think maybe I could take a quick peek?"
“I… I don't think I would be very comfortable doing that right now. Maybe I'll tell you another time after tonight's festivities."
“Aw, you sure? Come on, just a quick flash and I'll drop-" Stoat scout was interrupted by an opening door.
The vulpine looked over Stoat Scout's shoulder and saw Hakeem emerge. Wilken's companion appeared concerned as he gave a questionable glare at the shorter man before him. Though he quickly turned his attention back to Wilken.
“Everythin' okay here?" Hakeem asked.
“Oh, yeah I'm doing alright. My friend here was just curious about the state of my genitalia. I told him it wasn't a good time to discuss something like that right now."
“Right," Hakeem's eyes drifted back to Stoat Scout.
The man's complexion began to aglow a deep shade of tomato red as his eyes glanced down. It was as though the man became physically smaller as he slumped his shoulders and held onto his left arm.
Hakeem continued, “If he's causin' problems, I can show him out?"
Wilken shook his head, “Oh, there's no need to banish him. He'll be well behaved for the rest of the evening, I assure you. Isn't that right, my friend?"
The shorter man stood up, “Y-yes, sir!"
Hakeem crossed his arms, “Alright, Scout was it? Head back inside for me?"
“Understood," Stoat Scout sheepishly replied.
“Good," Hakeem motioned his head.
Once the man slipped back into the house out of earshot, Hakeem continued, “Are you sure you want to keep that creep? Cuz just say the word and I'll handle it."
Wilken smiled, “No need. Plus, Stoat Scout is still responsible for the firework show tonight. I don't think he'll attempt something like that again. I'm sure the warning was well received."
Hakeem nodded and brought himself close for a hug, “Alright. Listen, the night's young and you still have a party to get too back inside. Just holler if you need somethin', okay?"
“Alright. And Hakeem, thanks for always looking out for me." Wilken nuzzled his cheek.
The fox's human companion expressed a warm smile before he leaned in to kiss the vulpine's forehead. He then opened the door and allowed the fox back inside to intermingle with the other party guests. Wilken tried not to dwell on the previous encounter as everyone inside the house greeted him eagerly. Yasuke pulled the vulpine to the center of the living room to partake in a video game.
Wilken sat on the floor with Wolflord right beside him near the couch and seated in between Jade's legs. The vulpine was then handed a controller to be added to the game's roster. While unskilled when it came to hand-eye coordination for video games, Wilken gave it his best effort. From his judgment, Yasuke was more satisfied with the vulpine's willingness to play rather than perform at an adequate skill level. The vulpine eventually settled in and felt at ease with the rest of the partygoers. Jade asked if she could rub the fox's ears as he played, and Wilken didn't see the harm in it. The vulpine began to experience a pair of curious human hands roaming through his head fur and ears. The ends of his fur raised from the gentle touch as Wilken leaned his head backwards.
The sensation was strangely nostalgic for him. The presence of multiple warm bodies that surrounded him, the gentle grooming of his head fur, and the sounds of idle chatter put Wilken at ease. For a brief moment, Wilken felt transported back to his home village. The warm glow of the fire, the casual shared gossip between vulpine and vixen, and the paws that elegantly groomed his fur all came back to him. His eyes glistened as he desperately tried to swallow a lump lodged in his throat.
Jade glanced down, “Hey, are you okay? You're breathin' kind of heavy."
Wiken rubbed his muzzle, “Oh, yeah just something in my nose."
Wilken returned his attention back to the controller. As much as he wanted to open up, the vulpine reminded himself to keep his composure. And still, his mind was distracted with memories from his home. He attempted to push his thoughts away and focus on the people around him. As more people inquired about their desire to cuddle up with him, Wilken agreed to it. Their warm affectionate cuddles managed to quell his longing thoughts for home.
As the night wore on, Wilken kept a close eye on the clock as midnight approached hour by hour. Stoat Scout and his ride-along friend had begun to set up the fireworks in the backyard. Wilken, meanwhile, went out to the firepit to cook some hotdogs for the guests after the pizzas ran out. Wolflord, Yasuke, and a few others slowly began to don their fursuits before venturing out into the grassy yard with the rest of the partygoers.
Hakeem brought out a small portable TV that kept track of other New Year's celebrations playing out throughout the world. For now, all Wilken could focus on was preparing the hot dog for his guests. When a soft hand clasped onto his right shoulder, he feared that perhaps it was Stoat Scout who wanted to interrogate him further about his genitalia. Though when he turned around to face them, a familiar old woman looked up and beamed before the vulpine. Her hands hid in the brown military jacket as a cold gust of wind washed over them.
“Hope I didn't keep you waitin' too long!" She shouted.
*The vulpine leaped forward to tightly embrace her, “Ah, I'm so glad you made it! Come here." *
She chuckled, “Alright, enough of the hugs you goofball!"
A candid laughter escaped her lips as the vulpine released his hold on her. Wilken's sharp fox eyes had picked up something peculiar from Mrs. Cunningham. There was a soft and yellow substance that seemed to be lodged inside of her ear canals. A small seed of worry sprouted from the fox's gut as it appeared vaguely similar to a fungal infection from back home. He leaned in for a closer look.
“Mrs. Cunningham, what happened to the inside of your ears?"
“Oh these?" She pointed towards them, “They're earplugs for the fireworks."
*“Earplugs?" *
“Oh, right I guess you wouldn't know. They protect your hearing. Figure they would be useful for the firework show you plan to put on."
“Are they really that loud?"
“The one's fired up in the sky, most definitely. Have you never seen fireworks before?"
“Just on the screen, but never in real life. What is it like to gaze upon them up close?"
“Well, that's just something you'll have to experience for yourself."
With a bright smile, she then turned her attention to Jade as the woman approached the duo. Wilken had introduced Mrs. Cunningham to Jade before he returned his attention back to the firepit. Even with his body occupied with the tasks of finishing the partygoers' meals, his ears kept close attention to Mrs. Cunningham and Jade. The vulpine's new friend inquired about Mrs. Cunningham's unique brown bomber jacket. And from the sounds of their conversation, they seemingly shared a common connection to the fox's ears.
Jade opened up about how her great grandfather had also served in their country's armed forces. Jade's great grandfather belonged to a group called the Tuskegee Airmen from what Wilken could pick up. And when Jade was able to answer some of Mrs. Cunningham's questions about her grandfather's service, the response seemed to please the older woman. The fox's tail danced with glee as everyone seemed to be settled in for the evening.
And as the countdown came closer to midnight, the atmosphere of the backyard became lively. Hakeem turned up the TV volume so everyone could count down with the timer. With the last of the hot dogs finished, the vulpine glanced towards the lake as Stoat Scout lit various fuses. Once the outdoor television announced it to be midnight, people around Wilken cheered as a flood of fireworks soared into the air. A splash of various colors and patterns painted the night sky as the vulpine took it in. Though as the firework show continued, Wilken felt as though something was immediately off.
Each firework erupted in a loud fury that made the vulpine's fur stand on its very end. And the succession of each one seemed never-ending as they exploded far closer than anyone expected. It became so bright to the point that daylight had suddenly returned. And the constant cheers that surrounded the fox made it impossible for him to think. One particular screaming cheer had shaken him to his very core.
When the rancid burnt smell of fireworks rained down onto the fox, memories of his village burning had returned. After a particularly loud shockwave crashed over him, every fiber of his being stood on its end. His legs began to sprint away from the fireworks and the crowd around him. It only took a few seconds before he found sanctuary inside the makeshift greenhouse. When he entered, Wilken had caught himself from falling over from feeling dizzy. He proceeded to hide himself under the desk and covered his face between his legs. His body froze in the fetal position as the loud fiery explosions raged outside.
*Anytime he glanced up from his hiding position, all the vulpine saw was various huts being burnt to the ground. The cries of cubs were deafening as various bandits stalked through the village. They sought to steal whatever valuables they might find. When he heard the door suddenly open, he tightly clenched his head between his legs and tried to make himself as small as possible. *
“Wilken! Wilken!" A voice rang out.
A soft pair of fingers had managed to snake something into his ear as the material quickly expanded. Within moments, the loud explosions were muffled, and the material fully expanded inside his ear canals. When he glanced up, instead of finding his aunt from back home, Wilken spotted the familiar old woman kneeling before him. Mrs. Cunningham slowly motioned her arm up and down as she took deep breaths. The vulpine instinctually learned to mimic her and slowed down his breathing to match the woman's pace. His limbs stopped shaking as the fox held onto one of her hands.
Once the firework show ended, Mrs. Cunningham stayed with him for a while in absolute silence. Wilken took a few more deep breaths before he reached to retrieve the earplugs from his ears. His senses had returned to him as he glanced up at the old woman with tears in his eyes. He released his hold on her hand and composed himself.
“Is it over?" Wilken asked.
When she nodded, the vulpine carefully stood up to face her. Mrs. Cunningham rubbed his left shoulder as they stood in silence for a few more seconds. Eventually, Wilken spoke.
“I… I'm sorry for the outburst. I hope I didn't scare you, Mrs. Cunningham." He leaned his head down.
“It's okay. Does it feel like your chest is clenching up? Maybe feelin' nauseous?" She cooed softly.
“Yeah, something like that. How did you know?"
“That look on your face… I've seen it plenty of times from some of my war buddies."
“I see… you must think I am a coward for being set off from such benign fireworks?"
“Listen dear, there ain't nothing wrong with feelin' tense' around those things. Hell, I don't care for them myself, that's why I brought those earplugs. So stop that nonsense talk. You ain't weak for being a little skittish."
Wilken glanced down in shame as the woman continued, “Whatever reason for how you acted is your own. You don't have to tell me right now if ya not up for it. But just know, you got people who will move heaven and earth to help you. So don't ever feel like you're a burden on someone who's offered to help, got it?"
The vulpine nodded as fresh tears rained down the sides of his muzzle. He felt as though she perfectly understood what ached his heart. To his surprise, she reached out and gently grazed the side of his muzzle to wipe away the trail of tears. Wilken's natural instinct was to close his eyes and gently nuzzle into her hand. Her touch was strangely evocative of a gentle wise woman from back home. So much so, there were hazy images of the village's wise woman who consoled the souls of young cubs when Wilken was young. And in that brief moment, he felt the same sense of safety and security from all those years ago.
When he opened his eyes once more, the vulpine's sharp sight had caught a glimpse of two figures in the background. Jade and Hakeem both stood at the door with concerned expressions on their faces. They calmly approached and inquired about Wilken's state. Mrs. Cunningham took the lead and explained that Wilken might have experienced a panic attack. She recommended that Wilken rest somewhere quiet inside the home and that the fox take a step back from the party.
Jade had offered to notify the other guests that their host simply felt ill and wanted to retire early for the night. Hakeem agreed to her plan before he offered to escort Wilken inside the house. All Wilken could do was tightly hold onto his partner's hand as they left the backyard and retreated inside the home. He was brought inside Hakeem's room and beckoned to sit on the bed. As much as he felt obliged to see the partygoers depart, he still felt uneasy and struggled to keep himself composed for the entire night.
Hakeem offered to handle the festivities for the rest of the night, to which Wilken accepted. And while Hakeem and Mrs. Cunningham began to slowly usher people out, Jade offered to stay with the fox for the time being. She casually sat next to the vulpine and rhythmically rubbed his backside as the party wound down. Wilken clenched his throat to prevent a fox call in response to the soothing sensation of the petting. After a few minutes, she decided to fill the dead air.
“Feeling better, now?" She asked.
“A little… I still got a little ringing noise in my ear from the fireworks. I apologize for ending the party so soon."
“Hey, no worries. Wolflord and I had an amazing time tonight. So don't be too hard on yourself, okay?"
“I'll take your wisdom to heart. But you should probably go to him and not keep him waiting."
“Yeah, you're probably right. Though… before I go, I am a little curious about something?"
“Of course, what troubles you?"
“Me, naw I'm good. But I gotta know, is Hakeem an exotic animal veterinarian of some kind? Or do you see someone else for your medical stuff? You should probably get your hearing checked since it's probably more sensitive than ours."
Wilken's head tilted, “Whatever do you mean, vet? I seek medical attention from a doctor like anyone else-"
“Wilken, come now. You don't need to tell such an obvious lie. I know you're really a fox."
The fox shifted in place, “W-what gave it away?"
“Well…" Jade tapped her chin, “For the first hour or so I thought you were just a normal dude underneath a fursuit. What initially caught my attention was the way your tail moved almost independently from the rest of your body. But what really sealed the deal was your ears. I know what real cartilage feels like from the animals I've worked with. Plus, it doesn't help that you reacted like any other wild animal would when it comes to fireworks. So yeah, I know you're a fox."
“Then… are you frightened or surprised when you figured it out?"
“A little, honestly. But more so amazed that somethin' like you would be hangin' out in our neck of the woods. You're incredible!" She beamed.
Wilken shushed softly, “Please, your voice! I wish to not let others know about my true nature. Could you perhaps keep your revelation a secret between us?"
“Oh, yeah sure I can do that. I assume Hakeem and Mrs. Cunningham know. But I still gotta ask, is your roommate your vet?"
“If by that you mean he treats my ailments then yes he does sometimes. Whenever I feel ill or require medical attention, Hakeem simply researches it on Google to find cures. In terms of his profession, he's a solar panel installer."
Jade shook her head, “Uh uh, that simply won't do. Can't rely on Google for somethin' this… delicate of a manner. Have you ever been vaccinated for rabies, distemper, ticks maybe?"
When Wilken shook his head to indicate a no, Jade brought out her phone and typed away at it repeatedly. After a small chime rang out from Wilken's phone on the nearby nightstand, she stashed hers away and addressed Wilken once more.
“I sent you the address of the animal hospital I work at to your PM. I'll see to it that Hakeem picks-up your vaccines so we can administer them to you right away. If you continue to hear a slight high-pitched ringing or have a hard time listening for the next few days, then message me right away. It's important we look after your health from here on out."
“I see. Does that mean, you'll be my primary vet then?"
“Not necessarily. My specialty is in livestock, not exotic animals. But I have a few friends that I could call up for advice. I'll not reveal your true identity to anyone else. You have my word."
Wilken expressed a sigh of relief before he walked over to embrace her. She reciprocated the hug and gave a few firm squeezes to his body. The fox's tail swayed with excitement at the prospect of another person to confine his identity to. After he followed her out and gave a heartfelt goodbye to Jade and Wolflord, Wilken committed himself to cleaning up the small mess left behind. When the vulpine glanced outward at the backyard, he spotted Hakeem and Mrs. Cunningham folded up the chairs and tidied up the backyard.
Once everything was settled, Mrs. Cunningham came inside to check up on Wilken one last time before she departed. Wilken's heart swelled with gratitude from the woman's kind gesture. While he wished she could stay for a moment longer, Wilken knew that the woman needed to retire for the evening. And once she left, Hakeem was the only one left inside the home.
When the two crawled into bed to settle in, Hakeem simply allowed his fox companion to seek physical comfort in him. The presence of his warm body, the smooth skin, and the allure of his natural scent released a wave of relaxation. There were no words that needed to be exchanged that night. Whenever Wilken glanced at the face of his lover, the fox knew his immediate woes were understood.
Within moments, their hands, bodies, and lips had sought comfort in one another. And just like countless times before, Hakeem had known exactly what the vulpine needed in that very moment. They had made love in a way that released all tension and woes from the fox's tired body. And even when the momentary highs of their lovemaking slowly subsided, Wilken had felt a sense of safety and security in Hakeem's arms.
By morning, it was as though the events from the previous night gradually came back to him. When he awoke, he had found Hakeem already on his phone. The human had been deep in thought as his eyes scanned the screen. His concentration had only been broken when the vulpine sat up and began to stretch his limbs. Hakeem had shut off his phone and leaned forward to tightly embrace the fox from behind.
“How's your hearing, babe?" He hushed.
*“A little sensitive but the ringing has mostly passed." *
“That's good… I do wanna ask if there's still something on your mind from last night? You just seemed a little off yesterday. So, we could talk about it if you're ready?"
Wilken swallowed as the fur on his body arose. The embarrassment still lingered like a bad cold and his body took a defensive stance. Still, he tried not to let his primal emotions cloud his emotions. He exhaled a sigh of relief from his nose and began to gather his thoughts.
“Yeah, I can discuss it now if you're not too busy."
“Alright, I'm listening then. What's got ya so tense lately?"
“A lot of things actually. Hakeem, can you promise to not be angry with me for speaking my mind?"
“Wilken… I may get frustrated sometimes but I can never truly be angry with you. I'm just here to listen. Because I wanna help you, however I can."
“Alright, then I just don't want to imply that I'm ungrateful for what you've done for me. The fact you allowed me to host my own festivities, tolerated my guests, and cleaned up after my mess is something I'm eternally grateful for."
Wilken clenched up his handpaws and took a deep breath, “But, the heart cannot lie. Throughout the entire party, everything was reminding me of home. Memories of my old way of life periodically flooded through my mind. Both the most joyous of moments. And… the most traumatic."
Hakeem caressed his backside as Wilken continued, “Seeing those fireworks up close and hearing everyone's cheering, it shook me violently. I felt like that lost little cub that day when my home was raided. It was all just too much."
Wilken remembered the breathing exercises Mrs. Cunningham taught him and proceeded to practice it. While a few tears managed to escape, he felt himself able to calm down as his arms stopped shaking.
He continued, “Despite how the party ended, I'm still happy to have hosted such an event. I always managed to catch a glimpse of the wider outside world through the people we've celebrated holidays with. And, I think what I truly want most of all, is to venture beyond our home more often. To become more involved in your human society and set up a proper life here. I think that will help soothe my longing for home."
*“I see…" Hakeem mumbled. *
Wilken could always tell when his companion was deep in thought. The way his eyes scanned slowly was always the first indication. After a few minutes of silence, Hakeem appeared ready to answer the vulpine's request.
“I'ma be real with you, I'm still very much scared of exposing you too much to the outside world. Especially since I know this country will rip you away from us if they catch wind of your existence. But if you still want to go out more often, then you need to know first about what we can and can't realistically do."
Wilken turned his body to Hakeem and listened attentively as the human continued, “For one, you're pretty much undocumented in every sense of the word. Getting you any sense of an ID will be near impossible. Without it, it means you won't be able to do a lot of things, like purchase certain goods and services, you won't be able to find shelter on your own, or even open a bank account. Basically, you won't be able to fully participate in human society by yourself. You'll always be living in the shadows to some degree. I'm just giving it to you straight."
Hakeem continued, “I will teach you everything I can to make sure we come home safely. And once you're well versed in our ways, you can even begin to explore more on your own so long as you return home before nightfall. But just know, even when we go out together in public, I can't promise to always protect you. Once we start going outside, there will always be that risk. With all that said, do you still want this?"
Wilken nodded attentively and reached out to squeeze onto his soft human hand.
The fox spoke, “I very much do. Regardless, I still want to be by your side. No matter where I may end up, so long as I'm with you then I'll always be happy and content. The passions of the heart still burn bright for you and only you."
A familiar bright redness flush Hakeem's cheeks, “You know, I was never any good when it comes to putting my full feelings into words. But, I do mean it when I say, I love you, Wilken. Hell, I give my life for you if need be. You're the only solid good thing left in this world worth protecting. And I wanna be with you to the very end."
Wilken crawled up onto his lap to properly face him. With his long fluffy legs wrapped around the human's waist, they leaned forward and gently pressed their foreheads against one another. The vulpine lightly dragged his tongue against Hakeem's lips while his paws caressed his face. Hakeem responded with kisses of his own and tightly embraced the fox close to him. He pulled Wilken on top of him as the two lounged in the bedroom for a few more minutes.
The fox's tail twitched with excitement, “Does this also mean I can practice driving your truck as well?"
Hakeem scratched his cheek nervously, “I mean, I guess there's no excuse to put it off any longer. If you're gonna start running errands on your own, you'll need to learn how to drive. So, having you practice will be the first thing on our list."
“Excellent! Oh how I've always wanted to be in the command position controlling that fine machine! I promise to handle it with great care, don't you worry!"
“You better, cuz if you cause a wreck then there will definitely be consequences."
“Oh, do tell? How shall my fine human master punish his little naughty fox if I wreck his truck?"
Hakeem sucked air through his teeth, “You've clearly been hangin' out with those furries too much. Keep up that talk and I'm canceling your smartphone privileges."
Wilken sat up and grabbed his phone, “And how does one plan to cancel such privileges if the phone is out of reach? Maybe my love will try and chase after me?"
“Alright, it's gonna be like that then?" Hakeem raised an eyebrow.
He grabbed his phone and tapped at the glass screen a few times before shutting it off. The human glanced up at the fox once more.
“And it's done."
“What do you mean? You're not going to retrieve the phone from my hands?"
“No need. You didn't think I would give you unrestricted access to a smartphone did you?"
As Hakeem stood up from the bed to stretch, Wilken opened his phone screen but found messages that indicated his phone was inoperable.
“What on earth did you do?" Wilken sat attentively.
“I just turned off your screen time and app usage. As my momma always said, play stupid games, win stupid prizes." Hakeem smirked.
“My love, please we can talk about this! I needed to contact my friends from the party and check my accounts!"
*“You will at a later time. For now, I'm gonna make some breakfast. Maybe spend the afternoon running some errands ." *
No matter how long the fox begged all throughout the morning, his human companion didn't budge.
