chapter seven
“ The lesson was not really something I needed taught but she wanted to learn with the rest of them and they have come to expect to be on the same level. Perhaps that is why we were so effective. Perhaps that is why Susan was eventually chosen as the successor.” Susan raises up. “ There is much speculation about that. Some say I even killed her shortly after the announcement. Other say the king did it to have fresh flesh as his favorite, but that is getting far in front of ourselves.” Susan settles down again as Steve starts speaking again. “ Six months or about that. That is the period of time I felt them comfortable enough for something more advanced than to identify and treat simple injuries. We were on the training grounds treating the injuries of them after we got the proper gear made. Dragon sized surgeons tools were not exactly subtle but they did not mind the scars if they were healed to that point much faster than normal when untreated or how they use to do things.”
Steve looked over the stitching. It was neither strait nor extremely tight but it did close the womb and it was cleaned. He nods to the work and the treated leaves. “ I do not know how you do yours so well.” Steve looks at Susan with her claws covered in blood. “ My hands are better made for it than your claws.” Susan looks at her right front claw. “ Makes sense. I wonder if it is possible I could change my claws.” Steve looks at her confused to the comment. “ What do you mean change?” Susan looks at him puzzled then remembered he would not know. “ That is right. You are not aware. One of the reasons the dragons are on top of most other species is not because we have the greatest of strength or size but it is our ability to commune with the elementals. The beings that form the world personified. Legends tell that a single army could war with your kind when we had this power.” Steve pauses. “ What legend?” Susan blinks at him. “ Now is not the time.” Susan looks over him seeing a new injured. “ I will take this one.”
After the day of patching and treating the injured Susan was laying on the couch while Steve was eating a bowl of boiled vegetables and cubed meat. He pauses seeing her finish a book. “ So about what we were talking about earlier.” Susan puts the book on the pile and looks at him. “ What do you mean?” Steve set the bowl to the side. “ About your legends.” Susan pauses from her reaching to grab another one. “ Oh, that. Which do you want to hear about. The one about the elementals or the wars of old.” Steve considered it a moment. “ Whichever should come first.
Steve held the flag wide stance with his foot under the end. Susan and the others were treating the injured. The rest of the forces had pulled back leaving them there. Steve swallowed hard as he heard Susan start humming. It was her favorite song she downloaded during her time in his world. The words he heard from the others however were different than the ones he knows the song as. It was more than mistranslated. It was edited to fit their preference. That however ended as the thunder of feet and hooves shook the ground as they charged toward them. He closed his eyes accepting the code he had made and follows would claim his life. He just stood and waited unmoved. As if a year passed him Susan's hum caught him ear. He focused on that as it came to an end. As it ended he opened his eyes to find her at his side. “ That is our code. We heal without choice or reservation. We mend without want or restriction. We treat without desire or instinct. We will not fight you but many of your people will die this day if you do not stop.” Steve notices the army before them charging slowed and eventually stopped an easy rock throw away. They were surrounded and
